FBI serves search warrant on Sen. Richard Burr, Republican chairman of Senate Intel committee

May 13, 2020

WASHINGTON —

Federal agents seized a cellphone belonging to a prominent Republican senator on Wednesday night as part of the Justice Department’s investigation into controversial stock trades he made as the novel coronavirus first struck the U.S., a law enforcement official said.

Sen. Richard Burr of North Carolina, the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, turned over his phone to agents after they served a search warrant on the lawmaker at his residence in the Washington area, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss a law enforcement action.

The seizure represents a significant escalation in the investigation into whether Burr violated a law preventing members of Congress from trading on insider information they have gleaned from their official work.

To obtain a search warrant, federal agents and prosecutors must persuade a judge they have probable cause to believe a crime has been committed. The law enforcement official said the Justice Department is examining Burr’s communications with his broker.

Such a warrant being served on a sitting U.S. senator would require approval from the highest ranks of the Justice Department and is a step that would not be taken lightly. Kerri Kupec, a Justice Department spokeswoman, declined to comment.

Burr sold a significant percentage of his stock portfolio in 33 different transactions on Feb. 13, just as his committee was receiving daily coronavirus briefings and a week before the stock market declined sharply. Much of the stock was invested in businesses that in subsequent weeks were hit hard by the plunging market.

Burr and other senators received briefings from U.S. public health officials before the stock sales.

Spokespeople for the FBI and the Justice Department did not return phone messages seeking comment. A spokeswoman for Burr declined to comment. Burr has said he does not plan to run for reelection in 2022.

Burr’s selloff—which was publicly disclosed in ranges – amounted to between $628,000 and $1.72 million. The stock trades were first reported by ProPublica.

After the sales became public, Burr said that he would ask the Senate Ethics Committee to review them.

Burr is not the only senator who has come under fire for dumping stock as the virus neared the United States.

In late February and early March, Sen. Kelly Loeffler (R-Ga.) sold stocks valued at between $1.25 million and $3.1 million in companies that later dropped significantly, including ExxonMobil. She also bought shares in Citrix, which makes telework software.

Loeffler, who was appointed to her seat to fill a vacancy and faces an election later this year, said after the sales became public that she and her husband would divest all individual stocks.

Burr, a long-time supporter of federal programs responsible for dealing with a pandemic, sits on two Senate committees that got early briefings on the coronavirus -- the Intelligence Committee and the Senate committee that handles health issues.

The health committee received a briefing on the virus on Feb. 12, one day before his stock trades.

The same day Burr sold his stocks, Burr’s brother-in-law, Gerald Fauth, sold between $97,000 and $280,000 worth of six stocks, according to documents filed with the Office of Government Ethics. Fauth serves on the National Mediation Board, which provides mediation for labor disputes in the aviation and rail industries.

Burr has denied coordinating trading with his brother-in-law.

I hope they nail him and that bitch from Georgia as well.

by Anonymousreply 1May 14, 2020 2:59 AM

Burr's been dirty for years. Let's hope he is held accountable this time.

by Anonymousreply 2May 14, 2020 3:03 AM

👍🏼 Very good. Proceed to slaughter this pig.

by Anonymousreply 3May 14, 2020 3:03 AM

burr , barr all belong in the clink

by Anonymousreply 4May 14, 2020 3:03 AM

Trump will be blaming Obamagate.

by Anonymousreply 5May 14, 2020 3:06 AM

Time for jail.

by Anonymousreply 6May 14, 2020 3:07 AM

Burr still has to address why he was named in the Mueller Report as giving classified information, from both the Senate and the IC Investigations, to the target of those investigations...the White House.

by Anonymousreply 7May 14, 2020 3:09 AM

His place in history is assured!

by Anonymousreply 8May 14, 2020 3:11 AM

HA! Even if nothing comes of this, I hope they subjected him to a cavity search, no lube.

Although most republicunts are closer cases so they can probably get their whole arm up there.

by Anonymousreply 9May 14, 2020 3:36 AM

Great Guy! PARDON!

by Anonymousreply 10May 14, 2020 3:47 AM

Barr probably gave him a heads up to delete all info and this is just to start an investigation which will clear him.

by Anonymousreply 11May 14, 2020 3:48 AM

Do you think it may be a feint? As in, going after going after a few Republicans, the DOJ releases a slew of kangaroo warrants for Democrats.

by Anonymousreply 12May 14, 2020 3:58 AM

Took them long enough. Burr has now had three months to clear out info in his cell phone.

by Anonymousreply 13May 14, 2020 4:57 AM

It looks like this is what's behind it.

[bold]He already has. We are witnessing live - President Donald Trump's revenge on Senator Richard Burr.[/bold]

There is so much profiteering happening right now that it will take years to sort out. But [italic]we only hear about Burr,[/italic] and we hear it the loudest from conservative media, which arguably is why we're seeing it here right now. Because people like Tucker Carlson are all up in arms about Burr.

They're even throwing in his fucking brother-in-law.

It's all bullshit though. In reality [italic]conservatives don't give a FUCK about what criminal shit Burr did, or his brotherinlaw. Hell they fucking applaud that shit behind closed doors.[/italic]

Burr is a criminal but the only reason we're seeing him get the FBI treatment here is because he had the audacity to allow the release of the Senate Intelligence Committees report on Russian election interference.

[bold]Senate committee unanimously endorses spy agencies’ finding that Russia interfered in 2016 presidential race in bid to help Trump[/bold]

The Senate Intelligence Committee has unanimously endorsed the U.S. intelligence community’s conclusion that Russia conducted a sweeping and unprecedented campaign to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.

The heavily-redacted report, based on a three-year investigation, builds on a committee finding nearly two years ago that the January 2017 intelligence community assessment (ICA) on Russia was sound. The spy agencies also found that Russia sought to shake faith in American democracy, denigrate then-candidate Hillary Clinton and boost her rival Donald Trump.

The report, while not unexpected, is nonetheless a milestone — the first extensive bipartisan congressional affirmation of the intelligence agencies’ conclusion, which continues to be at odds with President Trump’s oft-stated doubts about Russia’s role in the 2016 race.

“The committee found no reason to dispute the intelligence community’s conclusions,” Chairman Richard Burr (R-N.C.) said in a statement.

But was it political?

Significantly, the committee said, “interviews with those who drafted and prepared the ICA affirmed that analysts were under no political pressure to reach specific conclusions.”

Ah, cool. I wonder if Republican hero Vladimir Putin was directly involved?

The committee also found that “specific intelligence as well as open source assessments support the assessment that Putin approved and directed aspects of this influence campaign.”

That seems like a huge deal. I wonder if they discussed this thoroughly between agencies to make sure they got it right?

But it does say the committee found the “analytic disagreement was reasonable, transparent, and openly debated among the agencies and analysts.”

Well no shit. Wow. Surely though they used the Steele dossier to help guide them?

The committee noted that all personnel interviewed stated the Steele material “did not in any way inform the analysis in the ICA — including the key judgments — because it was unverified information and had not been disseminated as serialized intelligence reporting.”

Huh. I wonder what Burr has to say about it.

One of the ICA’s most important conclusions[bold] “was that Russia’s aggressive interference efforts should be considered ‘the new normal,’ ” Burr said. “That warning has been borne out by the events of the last three years, as Russia and its imitators increasingly use information warfare to sow societal chaos and discord. With the 2020 presidential election approaching, it’s more important than ever that we remain vigilant against the threat of interference from hostile foreign actors.”[/bold]

[bold]Trump knows Burr could have delayed or buried this report, but he did not. Burr's family is now paying the price. So, while Burr definitely sucks, he's being sacrificed on the Trump/Russia altar for sure.[/bold]

R11 you do know there devices available to retrieve anything deleted on anyone's phone, right? No one is safe in 2020, anyone's deleted activity can be bought back to the surface.

The tools are available.

by Anonymousreply 15May 14, 2020 1:45 PM

Really ?!? Tell that to Robert Mueller who stated unequivocally that Trumps team LIED, WITHHELD AND DESTROYED EVIDENCE. Why they werent charged with these crimes is unfathomable.

by Anonymousreply 16May 14, 2020 1:55 PM

Burr stepped down as chair of Sen. Intelligence committee. I think some "final" final assessment is due from them on them.

Lets hope Burr snitches on everyone as he goes down in flames.

by Anonymousreply 19May 15, 2020 2:17 AM

Dick Burr

by Anonymousreply 20May 15, 2020 2:27 AM

The beard definitely gives him a daddy vibe.

Anyway, as R14 says, the fact that the FBI is going after him but not the Loeffler woman (whose insider trading was even more blatant) suggests that Trump is punishing him for working with Democrats and not being a total toady.

by Anonymousreply 21May 15, 2020 2:40 AM

It's about burying the redacted bits of the Mueller report. Barr gets the FBI to go after Burr (as if Barr gives 2 shits about insider trading, PUH-LEEZE people) so that he steps down and Moscow Mitch gets to appoint a replacement who will stifle any more Mueller report information from coming out. And Barr seemingly looks like the good guy, going after corruption. In order to serve a search warrant on a U.S. Senator, the AG would HAVE to sign off on it. I somehow doubt Kelly Loeffer, who did the exact same thing, will get this treatment.

by Anonymousreply 22May 15, 2020 2:45 AM

Maybe not, R22.

Too bad the poor thing is wall-eyed.

I wonder how this rat bastard voted on the computer seizure without warrant bill!

by Anonymousreply 25May 15, 2020 3:03 AM

Dont forget that Judge Reggie Walton is currently reviewing the UNREDACTED Mueller Report...thats if Barr turned over the real thing. I think that this will not play out well for Trump. With Barrs blatant attempts at appeasing Trump, Walton could very well declassify it it and/or enter it into the record making it public....or at least make a scathing dressing down of Barr for misrepresenting the facts to the American people.

by Anonymousreply 26May 15, 2020 3:05 AM

[block] Trump, Barr, McConnell ALL PERSONALLY requested Burr step down from the Intelligence Committee to be replaced by GOP Libertarian PAUL RAND![/block]

I haven't confirmed it yet and they may be trolling to get on the focus off Dr. Bright. Let's not forget John McCain felt Rand Paul was a Russian asset.

R26, when can we can expect a ruling? I know it’s a long read, but hope hopefully soon.

by Anonymousreply 29May 15, 2020 5:49 AM

Normally, I would be so happy about this, but knowing it's not about the right thing but about Trump being a parasitic, low-life mob boss looking for revenge, makes me physically ill. The fact that Loeffler is not being investigated is a fucking disgrace. Just be a whore for Trump and you get away with being as corrupt as him or his disgusting family/SIL.

by Anonymousreply 30May 15, 2020 6:00 AM

But was her phone seized, r23?

Why is Burr taking all the heat and not her?

by Anonymousreply 31May 15, 2020 6:08 AM

“Georgia’s other U.S. senator, David Perdue, has faced a lesser degree of scrutiny about his stock transactions. He did not respond to the AJC’s questions about whether he or his representatives had been contacted by investigators.

His financial reports showed that transactions made on his behalf increased at the same time that the virus was spreading and the markets became volatile. Perdue’s advisers purchased stocks in companies that stood to fare well during the pandemic, such as DuPont de Nemours, a chemical company that also makes personal protective equipment.

Both Loeffler and Perdue have since announced they will stop buying and selling stocks in individual companies. They each sold off nearly all the stocks they owned.”

by Anonymousreply 32May 15, 2020 6:11 AM

Georgia has turned into a political cesspool. Time to clean house and get new leadership.

by Anonymousreply 33May 15, 2020 6:11 AM

R31, she's a Trump whore while Burr wasn't a big enough whore. Although he's a pos, he actually did his job on as the head of the Intelligence Committee in that he wasn't up Trump's ass, so Trump is punishing him.

The Republican Party is just a giant pool of sewage.

by Anonymousreply 34May 15, 2020 6:24 AM

[quote]In order to serve a search warrant on a U.S. Senator, the AG would HAVE to sign off on it.

Yes, this is what law professors have been saying today -- in order to get a search warrant on a U.S. Senator, it would need to be authorized by someone at the highest levels of the Justice Department.

by Anonymousreply 35May 15, 2020 8:31 AM

This just means we will get some total Trump cocksucker in there now, like Tom Cotton, who will rev up the Obama diversion tactics. Bad news.

by Anonymousreply 36May 15, 2020 9:02 AM

They'll never go after Loeffler. Isn't her husband the CEO of the NYSE? They'll do what it takes to keep her happy.

by Anonymousreply 37May 15, 2020 6:04 PM

Burr could have done so much from his position but he did nothing and sat silently as our democracy was dismantled.

It’s no big loss.
