Can't win for losing on the DL. If I had revived that thread r8 would have accused me of digging too deep into the DL archive and bumping old threads
In any event:

The best thing (arguably) about the 80s was that there was room for every kind of music-- from rockabilly to 60s girl group knockoffs to synthpop to Latin influences to just about anything. As long as the hair was big and the cosmetics could be seen from Mars, it was all good.

R200 We don't just hate the song, we also hate the artist.
SW made an anti gay remark awhile back & it shouldn't surprise anyone since he does 700 Club interviews (the most anti LGBT show around).
Fuck him.
by Anonymous | reply 203 | May 14, 2020 6:47 AM |
I did not know that, r203. I don't watch 700 Club EVER.
by Anonymous | reply 204 | May 14, 2020 6:48 AM |
R204 I could never sit thru an entire show but I use to watch the first minute preview of what they were talking about & sometimes I'd watch if they were having an anti gay "news" segment.
I haven't had a tv in years but Stevie Wonder is one of the few celebs listed on their website (this was several months ago) who has sit down with the bigots for an interview
Pat R. talked about household name celebs who were afraid to come on his show back in the 90s & I guess some of them were Hulk Hogan, Sly Stallone & S. Wonder (who have since went on the show & done interviews).
by Anonymous | reply 208 | May 14, 2020 7:37 AM |
Stevie Wonder is one thing, r208, but are you suggesting a Stevie Nicks-Pat R connection?

Question: would you prefer I include the music videos (where available) or the audio only?

R213, I vote for audio-only. I don't watch videos.
by Anonymous | reply 214 | May 14, 2020 11:36 AM |
Ok, if I'm really feeling up to it, I will create two playlists. One with music videos, the other with audio only.

r221 I didn't know that. Thanks!
I plan to make a second playlist with the official videos (if they exist).

WEHT pop/metal and pop/rock? Journey, Foreigner, Def Leppard, Van Halen, Pat Benatar and others used to rule the charts, but rock hasn't been seen on the Billboard charts in decades.
How did rap/hip-hop end rock music? It doesn't make sense, since rock appeals to mostly whites. Did white people mostly turn to country music?
by Anonymous | reply 228 | May 14, 2020 2:57 PM |
r228, I'm going to post your questions in a separate thread (and add a question of my own).
by Anonymous | reply 229 | May 14, 2020 3:01 PM |
R228, those white people grew up and aren't buying records or downloading songs. The young white people are listening to hip hop, Taylor Swift or BTS.
by Anonymous | reply 230 | May 14, 2020 3:15 PM |
A lot of rock people moved to Nashville and have influenced that scene. That's why country in the 00s is closer to hair metal than to country. And now it's closer to hip hop with all the claps and midi drums.
There is a lot of rock music out there but it isn't making it onto the mainstream. There are many bands still doing hard rock in the Journey/Foreigner style but they're all based in Europe (or at least the record companies putting them out are). Look up the terms AOR and Frontiers Records.
by Anonymous | reply 231 | May 14, 2020 3:27 PM |
R228, also too, there was quite a bit of dumbing down of the hard rock genre with all the hair bands like Warrant, Poison, and Mötley Crüe singing about girls, girls, girls, cherry pies, and getting high and partying. Then along came Nirvana with their songs of angst, anguish and confusion, and it changed the game. All those hair bands seemed puerile in comparison.
by Anonymous | reply 232 | May 14, 2020 3:34 PM |
R209 I don't post any artist with religious right ties (so no Gloria Gaynor, Yes, Byrds, Kenny Rogers, Smokey Robinson, etc.).

It's amazing when you look at some artist's output during the 1980s and what great music they produced. Take Peter Gabriel for example - Games Without Frontiers, No Self-Control, I Don't Remember, Shock the Monkey (all from his self-titled albums from the era) and then Sledgehammer, Don't Give Up (with Kate Bush), Big Time, In Your Eyes, Red Rain from the album So. Not to mention the music from Prince, Madonna, Michael Jackson and many, many others.
