Golden Girls jokes you don't understand

Dorothy about Blanche:: "It's like living with Robin Givens."

Someone please explain.

by Anonymousreply 14May 24, 2020 2:34 AM

Anyone?

I think that Robin Givens was seen as a spoiled rich girl. She played such a character on a popular mid to late 80s sitcom called “Head of the Class”.

I thought it had something to do with Robin Givens getting beat on by Mike Tyson.

Robin Givens was married to Mike Tyson and was being dragged in the media at the time for their tumultuous marriage. The storyline that was being peddled was that Givens was a gold digging haughty bitch who was sucking idiot Mike Tyson dry. Then he beat the shit out of her the night their 20/20 interview aired-she told Barbara Walters he was a manic depressive and that living with him was “sheer hell.”

It’s an example of bad writing that didn’t age at all. It can be found in most sitcoms.

A lot of Dorothy's jokes like that won't age well- jokes about Phyllis George and changing the taste of Coke or Marblehead Manor.

Here's one I never got:

Blanche has a man still in her bedroom, about to go home. Meanwhile she and Dorothy are in the kitchen being catty with each other. Dorothy says, "There's a man leaving in ten minutes. Be under him."

Help me understand, DL.

It would help if we knew what was said before that, R7.

by Anonymousreply 8May 24, 2020 12:28 AM

R7, I think there was an old line from somewhere about there being a train or bus leaving in ten minutes, so be under it, to say that you want the person to get run over.

Thanks, r9.

I know that old saying but...how does being "under him" (a man leaving in 10 minutes) make any logical sense?

Maybe it's just a poorly written joke and I'm making too much of it.

by Anonymousreply 10May 24, 2020 1:39 AM

I think all she's saying is that Blanche is used to being under men in a sexual sense, so with 10 minutes left she can manage to get another round in before he leaves.

by Anonymousreply 11May 24, 2020 1:41 AM

If Blanche and Dorothy are bickering, Dorothy means Blanche will spend the next 10 minutes fucking this guy and when he leaves Dorothy wants her to be attached to him (ie she leaves as well).

by Anonymousreply 12May 24, 2020 2:21 AM

The full line was: "It's like living with Robin Givens, you gotta punch that fucking cunt’s face in sometimes!”

by Anonymousreply 13May 24, 2020 2:24 AM

You know what I don't understand?

How a thermos keeps things both hot AND cold!
