I saw him "Beautiful Boy" and it was a really fine performance. I've never seen as remotely restrained and nuanced a one from Lawrence, and he was, what, 22? And the character wasn't "whiny" - he was, in fact, callous, devious, and occasionally brutal - the locus of his descent into addiction remains mysterious. I maintain that Chalamet is talented, if that performance is anything to go by, and if not classically handsome, he does have some individual charisma and appeal.
