r26: The only one I've never heard of before as being gay is Cagney. I've been on DL since 2012 and this is the first time I've seen his name. I don't care either way. Have I just missed this and everybody else knows? Actually I know absolutely nothing about his personal life. Great actor though, amazingly powerful screen presence for such a short little not handsome man. Can't even remember how long ago he died. It's been a while. Where's your info from if you care to say?

I would say Liberace is #2 on this list. Although he did file lawsuits (and won) against magazines for reporting that he was gay, Liberace didn't ruin many lives and he didn't persecute his own kind. After the lawsuits in the 1970s, Liberace just sort of faded away until he passed away. He claimed to be straight but didn't attack people he didn't know.
The # 1 closet case, in my opinion, is Roy Cohn. Advisor to Donald Trump and Senator Joseph McCarthy, Roy Cohn lead the lavender scare in the 1950s and 1960s seeking out, threatening and blackmailing gay and lesbian government employees. He'd be furious that anyone would even suggest he was gay, but he never answered any questions about his own personal life. He targeted and outed gays and lesbians. Yet, he loved to party at STUDIO 54. Roy Cohn showed the nation live on television that it's okay to harass and threaten members of the LGBT community, then he'd party at gay night clubs. Roy Cohn is the prototype for Aaron Schock, Houston City Councilman Michael Berry and Representative Mark Foley.

You really do never know about these things.In the past 2 years,3 people very close to me have come out after living ostensibly heterosexual lives for decades..My brother-in-law,husband to my late sister(35 years of marriage,2 kids),his male best friend(38 years of marriage,4 kids),and a close female friend(30 years of marriage,1 kid). I’ve completely stopped taking any relationship at face-value as a result.And it seems almost everyone I know of the younger generation identifies as sexually fluid in some way.2 nieces for a start.And too many co-workers to mention.
I live in a relatively conservative part of Canada,hardly a liberal bastion of permissiveness.So unless I’m some wild statistical anomaly,it would appear that while I was sleeping there has been a major paradigm shift.
That celebrities in swinging Hollywood would be gay or bisexual behind the scenes should hardly come as a shock.That we have so few confirmed cases is what is most telling.

Stories also about Pacino which I don't disbelieve. Post on DL about a friend going on a date with him, but not following up on AP's suggestion of fun. Not his type.

Studio 54 was not known as a gay nightclub. Anyone who was anyone back then wanted to be seen there at some point.
If it was a gay club, and Cohn was closeted, do you really think he’d go there? It’s not like he went to Stonewall.
I’m not saying he’s not gay, I don’t know enough about that, but just saying Studio 54 wasn’t a gay nightclub.

I once had a boyfriend who had been a very successful underwear model. He then tried a career as a screenwriter. It didn't go far (he was a terrible writer, he got meetings because of his looks) but he did have lunch a few times with Paul Newman, who acted as though he were interested in my ex's scripts, but the ex says Newman was totally coming on to him. He didn't bite though -- he had just broken up with another (lesser) star and didn't want to deal with a closeted actor again -- and, this was later in Newman's career. He still looked great, but not like he did when he was 35.

|by Anonymous||reply 113||05/15/2020|
I grew up in LA and the boy next door's mom knew in the early 60s that Rock Hudson was gay. She had a rich sister that went to some country club where everybody knew everything about everybody. It was probably filled with the parents of future dataloungers. Also, for some reason, as a child I had pretty good gaydar. I knew without being told that Raymond Burr was gay and also Robert Reed. Maybe it was their voices? I have no idea. I did not have gaydar about Rock Hudson. He was a masculine acting guy. One of the best looking movie stars of all time IMO.

[quote][R106] Didn't they know he was dying of AIDS ? How long was it in the news before he died ?
A very short amount of time, maybe a few weeks, if that. He sparked rumors by how old he looked on Dynasty, but by the time it aired it was a few months later, and it all wrapped up for Rock very quickly. It was all very sad.

R138: I doubt it. Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz were well known in Spain way before going to Hollywood. Of course Pe's relationship with Tom Cruise was totally fake, but she had some real ones in Spain way before becoming really famous.
Javier Bardem comes from a very known leftist family. He has a good bunch of gay friends and he played gay roles even when he was stereotyped as iberic macho in his first prominent roles. He was able to not put himself in a box and had success on comedies too. He seems open minded but he is not gay

|by Anonymous||reply 146||05/26/2020|
I'd be surprised if Jimmy Cagney was gay, if only because he's in one of my favorite Old Hollywood gossip items: once on the same train as Merle Oberon, the two hooked up until Merle said mid-act "I can't believe I'm fucking JAMES CAGNEY!" loud enough that he was sure others could hear it. He deflated and left.
The gossip item shows up in a more tasteful form in this review of a Cagney bio from 1998:
[quote]There are no revelations of a closeted life here, though McCabe allows that Noel Coward probable wrote "Mad About the Boy" in homage to Cagney. McCabe also insists on Cagney's fidelity to Frances Willard "Willie" Cagney, James' first and only wife. After being lured into a train berth with a nude and adoring Merle Oberon, Cagney abruptly extricated himself when the great beauty cried out in joy.

David Muir might be gay, but he's not out to kill or ruin anyone. He's not targeting / harming LGBTQ people. I don't think he's lying about anything, and he's not issuing false news about his sexuality, so I wouldn't consider him a closet case. Every news reporter doesn't have to share their personal lives.

R170 Connor, who can easily pass as straight out of the two, is the one who actually came out while Miles is technically still closeted to the public. He's yet to comment on his relationship with Connor (of two years!). What an ungrateful bottom.

Come out, David Muir!

Clooney. Any time I've brought this up I get the old, "NO fucking WAY!" thrown back at me. No one believes this, NO ONE.

I don't believe half the silly wishful-thinking suggestions here.
It's this kind of silly wishful-thinking that make us look like fools.

Has there ever been a less gay-acting gay than Will Geer?

Were you one of the ones who insisted that Wentworth Miller was just a shy virgin?
|by Anonymous||reply 182||06/11/2020|
^ Wentworth Miller is living in the 21st century when people are more forthcoming about their private life.
But silly speculation about 20th century men (without a SHRED of evidence) is just silly.

r183, many of the names mentioned in this thread are widely rumored to be gay outside of the datalounge
|by Anonymous||reply 184||06/11/2020|
^ And lots of those farcical rumours have been spread by the idiotic, muck-raking, shyster seminarian Donald Spotto.

Leonardo Nam from Westworld.
I met him at an industry mixer back in 2012. I was joking around that he was in a movie with both Captain America and Black Widow before they were A-list and he just laughed.
He was really sweet. Asian dude with a thick Australian accent. I had no idea he was family. Now he has a husband and twin boys. Good for him!

Now that Bob Conrad is dead, maybe some of his young twinks will talk about sex with him.

r188, he's cute
