Op, your unhealthy obsession with white, white adjacent, yellow skin, white passing...is really out of control, we know time is hard, the social distancing only aggravated your mental state, but please try to control yourself!

Obama is as white as he is black but he is never thought of as white. Clinton is white but was thought by some to be the first 'black' president.

Race relations require you now to say a person of color not a colored person R4. Will you get with the program please?

Neither do I, R4. Neither do I.

I have never had any trouble from anyone for saying Black or White. If you get into African-American, for instance, you may have all kinds of problems eg if you say that about Obama - most whities understand that some do not but it's safer to say black, if you accept that Obama is black rather than white. Don't say boy or uppity even if it is accurate.

Who are "some," OP? White supremacists?

One of the most bizarre things I’ve seen on DL (and I’ve seen many) were references to “white yellow bones”. That no one has explained, and I doubt an answer can be found Googling. .

A more interesting question would be: why do biracial, black and white people, consider themselves black? When they are clearly not 100% black?
Lots of biracial people, black and white people, actually look more Hispanic than black.

r12, You want to know whats funny about that. Obama is literally AFRIKAN-American. He is literally what the word means.

Here is the rule... the world determines what you are.
Obama and Halle Berry are black because they look black.
Halsey, Jennifer Beals and Wentworth Miller are white because they look white or at the very least "ethnic white". And before anyone saw Meghan Markle's mother, they all thought Meghan was ethnic white. And for those who don't know ethnic white is white with some flavor as opposed to lily white.

"Spicy white", WTF does that even mean? LSA posters love to use that term. For a black message forum geared to black women, they seem overly obsessed with white people. I lurk at their celebrity gossip forums, most of their threads inevitably turn into discussions about white people. Weird.

R4, Yellow bone (plural yellow bones) (African-American Vernacular) A light-skinned person of mixed ethnicity including black.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | May 10, 2020 4:20 AM |
R4, Redbone is a term historically used in much of the southern United States to denote a multiracial individual or culture. In Louisiana, it also refers to a specific, geographically and ethnically distinct group.
Yellow bone people tend to have yellow undertones to their skin so I wonder if redbone's have red undertones.

What I find very interesting is that “colored person” has been considered offensive for many years now, but “people of color” is now the standard socially responsible term. I’m curious to hear from someone who know better why that is. It seems like virtually the same thing.

People from outside the US have difficulty with this. I've heard Europeans say "colored" when they mean "people of color" and they honestly thought they were using the correct term, they weren't intentionally being offensive.

There is a black comedian--I think it's Chris Rock, but I am not 100% sure--who has a whole routine about trying to explain the difference between "people of color" and "colored people" to his grandmother.
It's also a common slip-up for people who are not native English speakers, especially if they are not living in the US and aware of the distinctions.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | May 10, 2020 6:45 PM |
Darren Criss People seem to make a big deal about how he's half Asian and it's often written into plots. However, I'd never guess that just by looking at him.
MSNBC likes to use the terms "blacks and browns" and POC.

R38, "In the American South: Redbone = black mixed with Native American blood Yellowbone or "high yella" = black mixed with European blood"
Appreciate your corrections to the info I Googled.
Do you know what per cent of Native American Blood one has to have to be considered Redbone?
Would Yellow bone apply to someone who has a tiny bit of Black ancestry mixed with European Blood?
Notice that genetic members of the same family often have different complexions and skin tones.

by Anonymous | reply 60 | May 10, 2020 8:20 PM |
A gay man, regardless of his ancestry, will never be accepted as fully white. A gay woman can, but only because society trivializes women's sexuality, making it a non-issue. Ironic, in that most lesbians - even the racist ones - abhor these subjects and would never defer for access to that Inner Circle.
It is the main reason why gay men and women cannot get along. Gay women know that gay men have no virtue and would betray their most faithful confidante for a seat at high tea, and this (very regular) topic is proof of it.

There are some racially mixed people that present as white - Halsey, Mariah Carey, Tori Kelly, wentworth Miller, Rashida Jones and then their are those that present as black - President Obama, Halle Berry, Tracee ross

I have never heard the term "white yellow bone". To the best of my knowledge, yellow bone or high yella has always been a black person with very light skin. The hair is usually the give away, but many have what is called "good hair". Which takes you down another rabbit hole in the complicated racial history of this country. Back in the day, a yellow bone with good hair could pass. Movies like Imitation of Life and Pinky weren't that farfetched and reality in many cases, the only difference being no one was exposed unless they wanted to be exposed.
