No, not another celebrity death, but the dark comedy starring Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini. What trouble will the ladies get themselves into this time around? Let’s chat about it here, first off there’s quite the twist at the end of the first episode!
Lord, that pic is unflattering.

by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 9, 2020 7:53 AM |
If nothing else, the fillers and botox is definitely a bit distracting to her acting r2.

But at least sexy James Marsden is back
by Anonymous | reply 18 | May 9, 2020 1:24 PM |
Good writing would have referenced a twin brother in season 1, clearly the writers just pulled this stunt out of their ass as a way to keep James Marsden around.
But still, I am enjoying his presence in the cast, so I begrudgingly will go with it.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 9, 2020 1:29 PM |
I was getting worried though as Marsden seemed to be getting killed off on all his shows, so I’m happy he’s back. Nice touch the storyline of him having chest surgery as a kid and being scared and her mastectomy.

Is Natalie Morales Netflix's go to actress for lesbian roles? She played the weirdo Christian lesbo in Santa Clarita Diet?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 9, 2020 2:45 PM |
Granted it's been a while since I've seen season 1, but did Linda Tortellini's character have lesbo tendencies before?

This season is dark and hilarious!
by Anonymous | reply 23 | May 9, 2020 8:23 PM |
There is no reference to her being bisexual in season 1 r22, but it fits, and I like how casually the whole thing was handled.

R26 probably not.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | May 10, 2020 12:08 AM |
Finished the season, it is a fun watch but how long are they really going to drag this out?
The cliff hanger ending with the James Mardsen twin drunkenly hitting them is a weak attempt to contrive more drama. It's okay to just tell a story and end it at the natural conclusion.

by Anonymous | reply 36 | May 10, 2020 11:47 AM |
Cardellini pings so hard that I couldn’t see how her character and Don Draper were fucking on “Mad Men”. I think that was one of the only characters who I didn’t believe. Hers, and the creepy kid Glenn.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | May 10, 2020 12:00 PM |
It was meh. Marsden isn't aging well.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | May 10, 2020 12:20 PM |
R37, I found the LC/Don Draper storyline off putting as well. I fast forwarded through all their scenes.
Dead to Me Season 2 was terrific. I found it more satisfying than 1 and appreciated the recurrent themes presented. There is a karmic cycle that is simple yet elegant: Loss for 1, Deceit by 2 of 1 while getting emotionally involved with 1, Loss for 2 by 1. Season One— 1 is Jen, 2 is Judy. Season Two— 1 is Ben, 2 is Jen.
If the pattern holds—Season Three—1 is Jen, 2 is Ben. Ben will spend the season getting closer to Jen while deceiving her about the accident. I am not sure if the cycle will be fulfilled by the revelation that Jen killed Steve or with Jen or Judy unwittingly harming Ben’s mom.
It’s probably more sophisticated and complex than I grasp, but I love it when shows telegraph where they’re headed while remaining compelling along the way.

Lesbian makeout scenes? PASS.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | May 11, 2020 7:36 AM |
What I loved about season 1 was its focus on character. Season 2 seems to be all about plot and it's much involving.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | May 11, 2020 8:02 AM |
I thought the writing was very strong.
But I had to laugh at Marsden saying all the weight he put on went to his ass -- because he hasn't one.
That notwithstanding, he is adorable.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | May 11, 2020 4:02 PM |
This scene was so silly.
They have just fucked.
But she drags the bedspread -- bedspread -- into the bathroom to cover up her nakedness. And panics that she might see his dick, so he immediately grabs a pillow.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | May 11, 2020 4:05 PM |
They should just rename this show "The Christina Applegate Crying Hour". Jen is a total sad sack, angry and unlikeable character. I found her really tedious and that they could have spent more time on some of the supporting characters and developed their storylines. I probably won't tune in for Season 3.

Just finished binge-watching the season and LOVED it. Super-fun soapy melodrama with a lot of dry asides. Loved Perez, happy to see Jere Burns (however briefly) pop up, and can't wait for season three... which, given the state of the world, might be a long time coming.

R36 He is 18 now. Who knew Andrew McCarthy would procreate such a fucking hottie. He played a dumb straight teen soo well also, not that it would be hard since he probably is one but he has potential for a big career.

Just finished episode 5, enjoying it so far. Both actresses remain are excellent, with Applegate a particular delight. Their scene at Whispers and Winks (tears followed by Applegate’s fury) was outstanding. “Learn to read the room, Fucko! What the FUCK is wrong with people?!”
And the “Hey, girl!” moments always crack me up.

R63 I mean right? They don’t enter Ozark as a dark comedy do they?

^^ Right! I keep forgetting DtM is a comedy! Dur.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | May 14, 2020 5:51 PM |
R66 I think Laura Linney deserves it for drama but the emmys love the Crown and Colman was good as well.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | May 14, 2020 8:30 PM |
R67 Really? Claire’s shoes were a big fill, and like someone mentioned In a thread here she didn’t hit her stride until the later episodes. But then again they do a submit by scene and not based on series whole right? If they do that one about the town being buried by avalanche she will be hard to beat. The real life tragedy will add a leading edge to the performance that a completely scripted show can’t beat.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | May 14, 2020 8:36 PM |
R68 It will come down to Colman’s Aberfan episode and Linney’s brothers death episode. It will be a close call. my vote is for Linney.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | May 14, 2020 8:52 PM |
R69 Is it the whole episode that is submitted or a certain timeframe of twenty minutes or so? There was some good stuff with Linney, but I feel like there were a few iffy moments in there are well in that episode?
by Anonymous | reply 70 | May 14, 2020 9:03 PM |
Christina’s innate bitterness makes me sad and kind of uncomfortable. She reminds me a lot of The Ex of one of my close friends.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | May 14, 2020 10:12 PM |
I've just realized why I (and perhaps others in this thread) love Shandy so much: she is the embodiment of DL icon The Weird Little Girl Next Door!
If she kisses a doll or mentions King Kong next season, we'll know someone on the production team is a Datalounger.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | May 14, 2020 10:48 PM |
R72, yes! I feel like I know how next season will open & Shandy will be featured. I don’t want to spoil season 2 and the finale, so I’ll save my S.3 E.1 ‘treatment’ for later.

I wonder if we started a ‘Dead to me’ with “SPOILERS!” thread we could talk openly about the show’s plot lines & such?
by Anonymous | reply 75 | May 14, 2020 11:48 PM |
Even if they were in the same category, Linney would beat Applegate simply because she was working with better material.
I've often wondered how Dead to Me would play as a gritty drama. Sometimes the goofy comedy feels forced, especially when Jen and Judy are at their most vulnerable.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | May 15, 2020 12:56 AM |
Well to be fair to Christina, Linney would beat out practically any other actress.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | May 15, 2020 12:57 AM |
Same R75! Loved the entire season until the last scene!
by Anonymous | reply 78 | May 15, 2020 12:58 AM |
I gave this a shot after reading this thread and I loved it. Applegate is executive producer as well which is kind of shocking because I never would have imagined Kelly Bundy would ever achieve something like this.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | May 15, 2020 1:01 AM |
R79 If you only knew her as “Kelly Bundy” that is understandable. If you knew Christina as “Sue Ellen Crandall “ you would know she had serious talent.

Linney is a mannered ham. She’s unwatchably bad.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | May 15, 2020 1:42 AM |
Does anyone know if they shot season 3 already? Will be strange if they picked up season 3 right after the end scene of season 2 and the Henry actor grew a foot and had a voice change overnight.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | May 15, 2020 1:49 AM |
I'm with you r74 and r75! I was the first to complain about the ending!
by Anonymous | reply 83 | May 15, 2020 2:29 AM |
R82, no way they already shot S3. They and many series will likely have to recast child actors...and senior actors and fat actors...
by Anonymous | reply 84 | May 15, 2020 2:36 AM |
They haven't even greenlit a season 3, R82.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | May 15, 2020 3:19 AM |
R85 It’s been number one all week since release day and ended on a cliffhanger. Seems like a no brainer to me. On the other hand Ryan Murphy’s new show is almost out of the top ten already.

She also had a weird thing going on with Bill Murray.

by Anonymous | reply 90 | May 16, 2020 2:06 AM |
Loved Season II! Finally finished up with it.
The one character they can remove is the youngest son, IMO, who doesn't add very much. At least the painful Christian children's chorus storyline is over.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | May 17, 2020 1:20 AM |
R91 Maybe Henry was in the backseat, and died. Would be a convenient way to start the storyline from the ending of season 2 and not have the kid look like a teenager overnight since he’s 13 now.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | May 17, 2020 2:11 AM |
R90 Cardellini dated Jason Segel after freaks and geeks. Segel has said a lot of the movie Forgetting Sarah Marshall is based on their breakup (including the nude breakup scene where he hangs dong)
by Anonymous | reply 93 | May 17, 2020 2:19 AM |
It's annoying how Jason made Linda the villain in that situation. He was literally just sitting around doing drugs and occasionally cheating on her not working, etc. Then he makes that fantasy of a movie and gets a bunch of jobs. He still just sits around doing drugs and occasionally cheating tho.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | May 17, 2020 3:07 AM |

Charming interview — her Paul McCartney story is sweet. And after seeing her outstanding work on “Dead to Me”, how adorable she is was on “Samantha Who?” and the fact that she managed to stay the course with Neil Simon in “Sweet Charity”, I’m inclined to agree with Colbert’s assessment that she is a National Treasure!

Hmmn. I thought the second season had some good moments, especially from Applegate/Cardellini towards the end. I thought the FBI agent was good as well. I also like how the lesbian romance was developed (it challenged my assumptions in how I thought it was going to play out). I just wasn't as invested in the overall plot-line. I don't think it was as well designed as the first season. The ending had a good twist, but I'm unsure how they'll milk a whole quality season out of it. I may have to check out.

I actively think Judy had the better (and more difficult)role.
James Marsden hit the old age hall between seasons. His face and neck look strani(though i stilt would, of course)
The bed scene actually makes sense here for Christina, as an almost 50 woman with regrets. Hames covering his cock with a pillow not so much.

I didn't like Season 2 as much as Season 1. So many ridiculous coincidences and the completely stupid identical twin brother plot device.
The acting is great, but everything else was all just a little too much. It became exhausting to watch.

About a month ago, the cast did a virtual table-read of Season ONE's first episode (to promote drop of S2). I didn't watch it until after I binged S2 this weekend. I don't know how long ago they completed filming S2....but I was somewhat surprised that the kid who plays Henry really didn't look any different than he did in the finale. Granted, he was seated -- so I'm sure he's taller -- but facially, he didn't look noticeably older.
Sam McCarthy, OTOH, does look older than he did in S2 finale. And more like his father. Could be the longer, quarantine hair.

I love this show. Thanks for the info that the older son is Andrew McCarthy’s (BLAINE!!!!!!!). Speaking of hitting the age wall, what’s going on with Linda Cardellini. She is full of wrinkles and deep ones this season, especially around her mouth. Bulimia? She has always been cute but now something’s up. Is she a smoker? I admire Christina Applegate for not going nuts on the plastic surgery. She looks good/ her age - but good. Love the detective... salty bitch! She’s more interesting than her ex. Marsden is still cute but needs to lay off the tanning and refresh a little. The hotel episode was my favorite.

One of my favorite "little" things about DEAD TO ME has been the FACTS OF LIFE references! The debate about whether Jen is a "Blair" or "Jo"......"I think I'm a Tootie".....and "Wouldn't you like to have a Mrs. Garrett in your life?" Perfect! I was DYING!! (You know Liz Feldman was all over the Blair/Jo "thing" as a teenager).

Renewed for a third and final season. Right call to end it with the next one.

r120, Linda has eczema, which flares up around her mouth when she's stressed out. Actors put unnatural stress on their bodies in intense emotional scenes, and I've seen it manifest in eczema, breakouts and colds the very next day. This season was heavy on the crying scenes. Plus she doesn't do any fillers or botox, unlike 98% of actresses over 40..
