Fat Whores Despair! COVID-19 claims Souplantion
No more gorging on brownies and pizza and then calling it a salad.
[quote]The permanent shuttering of the 97 restaurants, including 44 in California, was announced Thursday following weeks of efforts to salvage San Diego-based Garden Fresh Restaurants, the parent company of Souplantation and Sweet Tomatoes, which operates outside of Southern California. The closing will mean lost jobs for 4,400 employees.
[quote]“The FDA had previously put out recommendations that included discontinuing self-serve stations, like self-serve beverages in fast food, but they specifically talked about salad bars and buffets,” said John Haywood, CEO of Garden Fresh. “The regulations are understandable, but unfortunately, it makes it very difficult to reopen. And I’m not sure the health departments are ever going to allow it.
[quote]“We could’ve overcome any other obstacle, and we’ve worked for eight weeks to overcome these intermittent financial challenges but it doesn’t work if we are not allowed to continue our model.”

Buffets are gonna be a thing of the past.

That is really saddening to hear. We went there many times over the years. Always fresh salad ingredients, always great soups and lots of other stuff. And yes, the desserts too. I will really miss Souplantation.

Never heard of it. I’m good as long as McDonald’s stays open.

I went to one about ten years ago and it was gross. Kids everywhere, poking their fingers in things. This one bitch got in my face when she said I cut in line to get the soft serve when I was reaching for a small plate.

With a stupid name like that, it deserves to be gone!

Sad news. I used to eat there frequently. I love eating at salad bars and creating a new salad each time.
But also not a surprise given the coronavirus.

Does Souplantation have slaves harvesting the soup?

I worked for them very briefly a few years ago. I say very briefly because two weeks after I was hired, the psychotic CEO fired my boss and me along with her. I found out later it was a pattern with him. He was doing some shady shit with the financials and threw several marketing heads under the bus to save face with the parent company when they didn’t meet their sales goals.
I also think it was because my boss was a big dyke and he didn’t like openly gay employees (my boss and me) in the corporate office.
The only good thing was I had just received my business cards, so that entire year I ate at every Souplantation in Southern California with the very generous employee discount.
So to you, John Hayward, I say good riddance to bad rubbish!

I'm pretty sure the chain had been struggling to survive in recent years anyway so they were probably doomed even without this pandemic. But yeah, I can't see how any buffet style restaurant is going to survive unless there's a vaccine. Even then I think people would most likely avoid places like that. My fat ass will miss the Shakey's buffet however.

I loved Sweet Tomatoes. Their soups were wonderful, especially the chicken noodle and the shrimp bisque. Also the first place I ever ate jicama.

We used to go there a couple times a year ... but even then, I would always say, never during cold and flu season.

“Souplantation” is a really unfortunate name. Never heard of it. “Plantation” seems like prettynweird branding to me. Can anyone explain? This company is in California, not Alabama, yes?

R21 Souplantation and Sweet Tomatos are the two names used. Same concept otherwise. And they were called Sweet Tomatos everywhere EXCEPT Southern California. Even in Northern California it was Sweet Tomatoes. I believe they're only in about 8 or 9 other states with California having the most locations.

I remember when the company started -I used to eat there regularly. Sad to see it go.

Back in the 90s there was a similar restaurant called Fresh Choice that was much better than Souplantation. There was also Souper Salads which was about the same quality as Souplantation but even more institutional and depressing to eat at. I don’t know if either are still around.

The Fresh Choice locations in the Bay Area closed about 6-7 years ago but a few of them reopened soon after as California Fresh. I think they lasted for a year or two.
Maybe it's time to bring back the automat.

Back in the 80s when the concept started, there were dueling chains, Souplantation and Soup Exchange. In my town there were even in the same shopping center. Souplantation won, obviously. But Soup Exchange had better food...

They really are relics of the 90s when "low fat" was the trend of the day. Never mind all the carbs and excessive calories you consume at an all you can eat food bar as long as everything is low fat!

If Golden Corral closes, or gets rid of their buffet and goes table service only, sows and boars on 2 legs all over America will lose their damn minds.

I was about to say that we'll always have your meatloaf, Joan, but now that sow-sage is being rationed we'll just have to make do with your oniony mayonnaise salad.

Used to eat there often with the office frauen when I worked at San Diego Naval Station. One woman would always bring a Tupperware container with her huge tote bag and steal the bread and muffins.
I loved their cream soups.
My sympathies are with the workers. The food service industry is in a freefall and they get shafted.

Buffets are over! You know what they call that glass shield they usually have above the food? In the trade it's called a sneeze guard. Sounds appetizing doesn't it.

Exactly like my experience. All these kids and filthy people picking over the food. The staff could not replenish the food, straighten up and wipe off surfaces fast enough. A pizza would come out and it would be surrounded. It was about 10 years and I never went back.
