I think there's a ghost in the apartment above me

I've lived in the same apartment in NYC for ten years. I'm 8C, 9C is above me, and the last tenants were a young Korean couple. They moved in a year ago and they were noisy. I always knew when they were home. I went up a few times that year and complained. Last January it got really quiet up there, except for an occasional light sound here and there. I figured the Koreans had moved out or had a houseguest and they went somewhere. I was happy about that because the new person in (C was very very quiet in comparasin. It was peaceful

Turns out they must have gone on vacation. Two/three weeks later they returned, and that lasted until the start of the quarantine. That weekend, March 21/22 all day Saturday was unbearably noisy, and then it was unusually quiet. They'd left again! The excess noise was them packing for an extended stay, somewhere. Then the quiet houseguest came back. Sometime I even heard the window upstairs opening or closing. I was beyond happy about that because he/she continued to be quiet as can be. All good.

Cut to three weeks ago, it's 4:30am Saturday night, and it's so noisy it woke me up. So I go up there, just like any sane person would. "What gives? Do you realize it's 4:30AM!?!"" "Oh, we were staying on Long Island but we had to come back because we are moving! And the movers are coming at 9am. We have to be ready for them! We're sorry." I tolerated his poor scheduling because they were moving. All I said was "You're moving? Oh ok. And yeah, I could tell you weren't here because whoever you had staying here was a lot quieter." And he looked at me and said "We didn't have anyone staying here."

I walked away and left it at that. But I'm still hearing a wee bit of noises coming from above that sounds like someone quiet. The first six or so years I lived here, a gay guy with a pitbull lived upstairs, and I never heard a sound. Not even once. So I know that level of quiet is possible. My apartment is at the end of the elevator lobby/hall on the right, and on the left side there's a stairwell, so only my bedroom connects to the bedroom in 9B via a shared wall.

It's very strange. I'm reluctant too even go up there.

Rat.

Set up a camera

by Anonymousreply 2May 7, 2020 11:17 PM

Get a good lawyer.

by Anonymousreply 3May 7, 2020 11:20 PM

Op, the noise is coming from inside you're apartment. Get out!

by Anonymousreply 4May 7, 2020 11:25 PM

It’s a squatter.

by Anonymousreply 5May 7, 2020 11:26 PM

It’s a roast!

by Anonymousreply 6May 7, 2020 11:28 PM

I knew a person in NYC who had the exact same experience a few months ago and then she died.

R.I.P in advance, OP.

by Anonymousreply 7May 7, 2020 11:29 PM

Have you considered the possibility that you're slowly going insane?

by Anonymousreply 8May 7, 2020 11:34 PM

OP, R1 and R5 have the most plausible reasons for the quiet noises you're hearing - a rat or some other type of animal, or a squatter who doesn't want to be found out. It's incredible how much noise a rat can make.

by Anonymousreply 9May 7, 2020 11:40 PM

OP, can I have your stuff??

by Anonymousreply 10May 7, 2020 11:40 PM

Call the Ghostbusters.

This sounds like a sexy mystery!

by Anonymousreply 12May 7, 2020 11:48 PM

It happened once in a building I lived in.

Turned out the super key his friend stay when he knew the residents would be gone. Super got fired when it all came out

by Anonymousreply 13May 7, 2020 11:52 PM

What R8 said. You sound touched.

by Anonymousreply 14May 7, 2020 11:54 PM

R13

Did the super key also open your door?

by Anonymousreply 15May 7, 2020 11:54 PM

This is just like Parasite, OP.

by Anonymousreply 16May 7, 2020 11:57 PM

1) A burglar or squatter was staying while the couple was out-of-town; stealing food and shelter.

2) The couple are hiding an illegal immigrant or two like Anne Frank.

by Anonymousreply 17May 7, 2020 11:57 PM

Mice in the walls.

by Anonymousreply 18May 8, 2020 12:00 AM

Why does it matter they're Korean, OP?

by Anonymousreply 19May 8, 2020 12:10 AM

Picture it R19, NYC 2020...

by Anonymousreply 20May 8, 2020 12:19 AM

Can I have your sanitized stuff, OP?

by Anonymousreply 21May 8, 2020 12:34 AM

It’s not a ghost. It’s probably a friend of the super.

But if it is a ghost, can I have your apartment??

by Anonymousreply 22May 8, 2020 12:37 AM

Remember those homeless folks you told us were stealing your electricity at an outside outlet?

They came and squatted while your neighbors were away.

by Anonymousreply 23May 8, 2020 12:44 AM

How about you mind your business and pretend you ain’t hearing shit. That’s how you survive

by Anonymousreply 24May 8, 2020 1:09 AM

If it's a Korean entity you should call in a Buddhist priest to exorcise it. Unless they're Christians, in which case just call the Catholic archdiocese and get a referral.

by Anonymousreply 25May 8, 2020 1:19 AM

Can we swap homes? My neighbours across the road have a woodchipper going from 8-5 every day.

by Anonymousreply 26May 8, 2020 4:08 AM

I believe in ghosts op. You should ask around and see if anyone has been in there when it’s busy

by Anonymousreply 27May 8, 2020 4:26 AM

I'm sure it's nothing OP.

And how many thousands of dollars a month do you pay to have to put up with all that racket?

by Anonymousreply 29May 8, 2020 12:32 PM

R26 I hear your pain. Since the stay-at-home order, my neighbor has decided to use every power tool in his garage everyday. It was quiet for the first time in weeks on Sunday, until he decided to mow the lawn.

by Anonymousreply 30May 8, 2020 12:53 PM

It's been 2 weeks of non-stop woodchipping and now the section next door is being worked on. I swear I won't have covid, but i will be insane by the time the lockdown ends.

by Anonymousreply 31May 9, 2020 9:26 AM

OP, listen to Joan Juliet Buck:

Maybe the Korean couple already informed the landlord they were moving and he was showing the apartment to possible new tenants. This would also explain the opening of windows which rats can't do. Lol.

You could also go upstairs and knock and ask for an egg if you hear the noise and in the evening check if the lights are on in the apartment.

by Anonymousreply 33May 9, 2020 10:18 AM

It's either imagined or a mouse.

by Anonymousreply 34May 9, 2020 10:36 AM

I had a friend that the same thing happened too. Turned out to be a brain parasite.
