Marijuana and getting older

I loved pot in my 20s. I didn't smoke during my early thirties, and recently though I'd try it again. (I am 36.) A few months ago I bought the Ghost Train Haze strain.

I've suddenly realized smoking is not the fun it used to be. The window between "not high enough" and "way too high" is very narrow, too narrow to be enjoyable. I got too high recently (after a couple of hits from a one hitter!) and completely freaked out. It was one of the worst mental experiences of my life. I thought I had split into two people.

This shit never happened in my 20s. Pot was enjoyable and made everything funny.

Has your experience with pot changed as you've gotten older?

The problem isn’t always the drug. Sometimes the problem is your own thinking which is amplified when on the drug. You can use the drug as a tool to change that thinking permanently. That’s my experience

by Anonymousreply 1May 7, 2020 10:04 PM

I’ve noticed this too. I think one of the reasons is that the pot is so much better than the skunk weed I smoked in my 20’s. A little goes a long way now.

by Anonymousreply 2May 7, 2020 10:05 PM

I live in a state where marijuana is legalized. I take an edible (a chocolate square) of a 2:1 strain every evening. It makes me more relaxed, but not high. I basically use it now in place of having a cocktail in the evening.

I almost never got high when I was younger. I hated (and still hate) the smell of marijuana smoke, and edibles were not as precisely calibrated back then as they are now. Legalization in my state has had its advantages.

by Anonymousreply 3May 7, 2020 10:08 PM

OP pot is way, way more potent than it used to be. Also it sounds like you were smoking a Sativa strain which is much ‘speedier’ than others and makes you more prone to feelings of paranoia and dysphoria.

by Anonymousreply 4May 7, 2020 10:09 PM

I have wondered about that r4. When I was young I just smoked whatever was available. Now that I can get it retail I can pick and choose.

Our dispensaries are closed right now but I might try an indica when they open up again.

by Anonymousreply 5May 7, 2020 10:14 PM

You just need the right strain. Do some research online to see what's best for you. I prefer an Indica heavy strain to deal with insomnia, pain and just to chill out. R4 is correct. A Sativa stain can make you extremely agitated and paranoid.

by Anonymousreply 6May 7, 2020 10:16 PM

R4 - correct. You have to educate yourself - or better, ask people in the store. There's really way too much to learn - there's so much stuff nowadays.

Something happened to my partner at a New Year's party - he smokes (or vapes) almost every day and has a high tolerance. He took 2 puffs at this NYE party and we had to leave - he was freaking out so much.

Well, the guy had changed the battery from his cig vape to the pot vape - and it was like 3-4x strength because the battery heated up the molecules so much. The owner told most people to go easy because of this early in the party and forgot to tell my partner.

Two deep puffs and he was sweating and freaking out - he ended up getting a ton more than he normally ever would.

I didn't know this could happen - but it's something to be mindful of.

by Anonymousreply 7May 7, 2020 10:16 PM

I know no one will believe me but I never got high until I was 52. I smoked a few times in college and afterwards but with zero effects. I thought it was a big scam. When I was on a vacation in Colorado I decided to stock up and took it all home to do my own personal experiment. I tried all forms; bud, vape, edibles etc. After 6 months it finally worked,

by Anonymousreply 8May 7, 2020 10:17 PM

I'm so old I remember when everyone smoked Mexican. Good times.

by Anonymousreply 9May 7, 2020 10:18 PM

I am the same way. I attribute it to not getting high regularly like I did when I was younger. It's not as overpowering when you do it more often.

by Anonymousreply 10May 7, 2020 10:20 PM

I never smoked until my late 20s, then I moved to LA and everyone seemed into it so I enjoyed myself. Stopped for a few years but now I have a house near the Massachusetts border and have gone to a dispensary in Great Barrington. Personally, since you are nearing 40, I would avoid inhalants. One-hitters, bongs, vapes - all of it. I've discovered edibles - gummies in particular -and I think they are amazing. I get some with a high THC content. They are fantastic and no lung agitation.

by Anonymousreply 11May 7, 2020 10:20 PM

Yep r10. Of course the strong has a stronger affect when you don't have a tolerance.

I go through the same thing. I loved weed, smoked almost every day in college. Now I am in my thirties and I rarely ever smoke, so when I do the effect is way more potent for me and not as enjoyable as it used to be.

by Anonymousreply 12May 7, 2020 10:34 PM

the drug* has a stronger affect

by Anonymousreply 13May 7, 2020 10:34 PM

I only recently started getting high and I hated it when I was younger. I do a hybrid edible and it's 10mg of THC. Indica knocks me out cold. It's great for sleep but not when I'm up and about.

by Anonymousreply 14May 7, 2020 10:35 PM

Here's something to consider if you are thinking of trying edibles. It takes 2-3 hours to feel the full effects, and the high can last for as long as six hours. If you are a newbie or someone who hasn't used cannabis in years, you have no tolerance to THC. It will hit you harder, and if you take too much it won't be a pleasant experience. Start with a very low dose, maybe 5 mg. or less, and wait to see how it affects you. Some people think it's not working since they don't feel anything right away and take more, and that can get you in trouble. If you do OD, remember that no one ever died from a cannabis overdose. The heart-pounding paranoia and other unpleasant side effects you may be experiencing will go away.

by Anonymousreply 15May 7, 2020 10:36 PM

Weird, I like it more now I'm older. I think I'm less uptight now.

by Anonymousreply 16May 7, 2020 10:44 PM

When I got way too high recently, I got the chills. I was laying in my bed shaking uncontrollably. THAT certainly has never happened before

by Anonymousreply 17May 7, 2020 10:54 PM

OP, r15 knows what they’re talking about. You need to stop with the smoking, but if you do, you take but one puff. One puff. I know it’s very counterintuitive if you’re over 40. But trust me, it’s all you need.

But I also agree, just move to edible gummies. Try both sativa and indicate, but do as little as 2mg to start. Don’t do anymore than 5mg, again, that’s all you’ll need.

by Anonymousreply 18May 7, 2020 10:55 PM

Couldn't have said it better, R18. I switch between C. indica for sleepytime and C. sativa if I want to be absorbed in some mundane task.

I grow my own, OP, but I wonder who sold you something so strong? Most of the dispensaries in my area are great at letting you know the risks and side effects for the very strong stuff.

by Anonymousreply 19May 7, 2020 11:02 PM

I read an article in Discover Science, it's a magazine, and there were German scientists who kept rats on marijuana. It slowed the effects of againg! The brains of the old rats that had marijuana resembled the brains of still young rats, for example, in how well they navigated mazes.

by Anonymousreply 20May 7, 2020 11:07 PM

I was never a pothead but now i enjoy edibles. I use a single 10mg gummies for sleep.

by Anonymousreply 21May 7, 2020 11:12 PM

After not smoking pot for 3 decades, I recently was given a vape by an old high school friend for laughs along with some pot. I hardly get high and am completely allergic to pot now it turns out. I am sad about this. I was looking forward to joining the legal weed wave! I tried various strains, all the same, within an hour after smoking or vaping, I am sneezing and watering itchy eyes that lasts for at least a day or two. Me so sad! I just decided I can't have nice things.

by Anonymousreply 22May 7, 2020 11:14 PM

OP I ate an edible someone gave me and it was horrible! It was like I was standing on a floor, on the earth, and then someone pulled it all away. I couldn’t talk or move. I was in a club. I’m old and it was embarrassing. I clung to the edge of the table for several hours until the people I was with were ready to go home. I couldn’t call anyone to come pick me up. It was as if the phone was an alien object that I had never seen before—like the coke bottle in “The Gods Must be Crazy.” To top it off, some redneck guys tried to pick a fight with me! I just looked at them with my big, stoned saucer eyes and they went to another table. It was the worst experience. I don’t know why anyone would think this was fun. I didn’t feel human, I didn’t feel anything but a panic to be normal again.

by Anonymousreply 23May 7, 2020 11:18 PM

How ironic that OP's link looks like Covid-19 under a microscope. Because I believe the deaths will someday be attributed to bad lungs from vaping, cigarettes, weed, pipes, cigars, etc.

by Anonymousreply 24May 7, 2020 11:23 PM

OP is a Mary. You are the Jane to her Mary, R23.

Dammit, people, stay off the MJ if you can't handle it and stop blubbering. The rest of us worked hard for the legalization and now you're trying to destroy it by claiming it's like some hallucinogen.

by Anonymousreply 25May 7, 2020 11:24 PM

[R25] Some of us are just more sensitive and do not have the constitution of a brick.

by Anonymousreply 26May 7, 2020 11:27 PM

No, some of you are just old and shouldn't partake if you're going to whinge about it afterwards. No sympathy.

I sense an agenda here, but I could just be paranoid. Not being high, I'd say that's unlikely. In fact, I don't get high on the regular so I can enjoy it more when I do.

by Anonymousreply 27May 7, 2020 11:31 PM

JFC, r27, I don't have an "agenda" other than hearing others' experiences

by Anonymousreply 28May 7, 2020 11:33 PM

I have had OP's and R23 's experience earlier in life(not from an edible) and stay far, far away from it. I am glad to soon be away from my soon to be ex who has been a daily user for his entire life including our 20 yrs together. Ugh I hate pot but happy for those that can enjoy it especially legally

by Anonymousreply 29May 7, 2020 11:34 PM

I remember my mother getting high and freaking out. She thought her head was detached from her body and was telling me to find it. She was carried home by a neighbor, who was not happy to have this to deal with.

by Anonymousreply 30May 7, 2020 11:34 PM

I started smoking weed fairly regularly around a year ago after getting a vape pen. Have had nothing but good experiences, but one day a few months back I was pleasantly high and decided to watch the Rob Zombie movie "3 From Hell". While I enjoy horror movies I don't love the ones with super realistic torture porn type gore, which this one was. There was particularly violent scene going on and as I'm watching I could feel my heart starting to pound in my chest. I turned the movie off and had to start telling myself to calm down it's only a movie. It took me a good 10 minutes to level out. My hands were shaking and everything. I've only had one proper anxiety attack in my lifetime and this was a very close second to becoming that. Now I avoid violent movies at all costs when I'm high.

by Anonymousreply 31May 7, 2020 11:45 PM

OK, OP/R28, I was joking somewhat, but since you're interested, here's my experience: I used to get high all the time as a young adult in my 20's and 30's and working several jobs. I kept it hidden and later, when someone I dated found out I got high, was labeled a 'druggie.' Fearing these people would give me away, I stopped. You could go to jail and many did.

Later, after I had not smoked for many years, a friend gave me a bag for my 50th birthday and some seeds to celebrate legalization. I started to get high again and stopped taking the nasty pharamaceuticals they prescribed for depression. When the shops opened for retail business, I found out which strain was best for my needs and bought regularly. Only once have I had a somewhat hallucinogenic experience and that was when I floated up to the ceiling after smoking some great weed at 18. Columbian Gold. It wasn't the heart pounding experience some relate here, and I don't negate the experiences they had, but I wonder why we're not seeing more positive stories.

Someone passed along a joint laced with PCP once and that experience sucked. A lot of people who combine the stronger strains with liquor relate a less than optimal high and blame it on the weed.

Everyone will have a different experience because we are not all physiologically the same, but it certainly pays to do the research before you partake. It's not the weed I grew up with, but it's been wonderful not to be afraid of being busted and to have the relief without the side-effects. I love edibles because they do last longer and don't mess up the lungs.

by Anonymousreply 32May 7, 2020 11:50 PM

I smoked a bit with my friends in college (maybe 2 or 3 times) and it never did much for me except once where I thought everything was pretty and the really shitty fast food we were eating because the most delicious thing I'd ever tasted in my life.

Years later, my boyfriend got me an edible while we were on vacation and I thought I was losing my mind. I thought every person we walked by on the street harbored ill intent towards us and after 2 or 3 hours, it went away and I was left with the most unbelievable euphoria I've felt in my life and I just started loving everyone and everything and seeing the beauty in nature. I still remember sobbing uncontrollably by how beautiful everything was.

Despite this being a somewhat mixed experience, I started experimenting more with it, because I found it interesting and after a few similarly shaky times, I figured out how much I need to get the good side effects and less of the bad and, now, I love it. The Sativa gets me unbelievably productive and boring tasks feel like very interesting and satisfying adventures. If I ever end up taking a bit too much, I remember that this will pass. Your state of mind has a lot to do with it, so if things get scary, listen to one of your favorite songs. I've found that simply dancing to great music will put me in a happy mood again and the anxiety will vanish and, even better, it makes the music sound even better. It's a bit like being a kid again. So much energy and a sense of adventure.

I have discovered that trying to watch a movie or TV show on Sativa is a bit of an ordeal, because it gives me a bit of ADD which I don't usually have. I feel like I shouldn't be sitting and I should be doing something productive.

by Anonymousreply 33May 8, 2020 12:04 AM

I have a stupid question, but what’s the point in choosing to smoke pot on a consistent basis in your 30s? No offense but I feel like when you have a relationship with pot or alcohol it’s either because of some underlying emotional issues or you’ve got nothing really going on.

by Anonymousreply 34May 8, 2020 12:10 AM

r34 Chronic pain, insomnia and nausea.

by Anonymousreply 35May 8, 2020 12:14 AM

I do it when I want to get some boring stuff done and enjoy it and keep a positive attitude. Even the Sativa kind that might hype you up at least takes away a lot of that anger and bitterness. This sounds silly, but I think I've gotten some of my greatest ideas while high. It connects you to that childlike part of yourself that you lose once you get older and learn to fear everything. You start realizing everyone is more alike than you think and we all have the same fears and anxieties and you hope that we can all get together as one at some point and help each other out.

You start to realize why hippies said this shit and, damnit, they had some good ideas. It really makes me feel connected to my fellow man in an odd way. It's great when I need to calm down and realize that the world doesn't revolve around me.

by Anonymousreply 36May 8, 2020 12:17 AM

I have a 50-acre legal farm in Washington. So many misconceptions here.

Ask me anything!

by Anonymousreply 37May 8, 2020 12:26 AM

I did my share of partying in my twenties, but in time the experience lost its novelty and I gave it up when my life got busier with other things. Now I’m retired and live in California where it’s legal and easy to get, but I’m just not inclined to revisit it. And I’d like to preserve a few brain cells for my old age.

by Anonymousreply 38May 8, 2020 12:29 AM

Marijuana from the 80s and 90s had about a 7-10% concentration of THC. Now most strains are in the 30% range. If you want the relaxed, chilled out, happy effect from marijuana, get a high CBD/low THC strain. I had the same issues as you, OP, before I found the right strain. I'm a medical marijuana patient and really need the medical benefits - early attempts to find a good strain were such a failure; I'd get super paranoid after one bong hit, heart racing, freaking out, sometimes even feeling like I was tripping (and I took my share of LSD and mushrooms in the 80s/90s so I know what tripping feels like). I finally found a 22% CBD/1% THC strain and it changed everything. Now I have the true medical benefits and none of the anxiety and paranoia. Besides helping with my chronic pain, it really relaxes me and makes me feel pleasantly "high" - but not in a psychotropic way, more in an overall "feeling good" kind of way. It's helped me so much.

by Anonymousreply 39May 8, 2020 12:47 AM

I‘ve built up such a tolerance that I can’t get high anymore. Sucks.

by Anonymousreply 40May 8, 2020 12:47 AM

I've smoked a good 35 years now and haven't noticed any change in tolerance. It is easier now with so much variety, the reliability of contents, etc. Doubt I'll ever stop, as it's not only good for ADHD (smoke in the evening, not at work, but the residual effect is helpful), but it also allows me to enjoy multiple orgasms. Seriously. I am a man, BTW. I literally have to use a drop cloth.

by Anonymousreply 41May 8, 2020 12:59 AM

I'm 66 and retired. A friend introduced me to tinctures since I can't smoke in my apartment. (I've included a link below to explain what a tincture is.) Think I have the dosage worked out now and enjoying my stay at home. I never enjoyed smoking marijuana when younger because it made me so sleepy, but now having a great experience - especially when watching a movie.

by Anonymousreply 42May 8, 2020 1:06 AM

I'm one of those people that it is just not a good experience for, and god knows I have tried. I loved taking all kinds of drugs in the 80s, but every single time I smoked weed it just turned me into a paranoid freakout nightmare. It was so unfair, all my friends could toke up and relax, laugh, have a grand old time but for me it just became oh my god, oh my god, I've got to get out of this 7-11 RIGHT NOW because I can't feel my hands or feet and everyone is staring at me and THEY CAN TELL!

by Anonymousreply 43May 8, 2020 1:12 AM

The main things I remember about pot is it makes you stupid and gives you the munchies. I have no desire to experience either of those things again.

by Anonymousreply 44May 8, 2020 1:13 AM

R43 Imagine the paranoia back in the day when pot was illegal. Highly illegal at that, with cops that hated pot-smoking freaks. Good times.

by Anonymousreply 45May 8, 2020 1:17 AM

God, op you are such a wuss.

by Anonymousreply 46May 8, 2020 1:19 AM

I have experienced both the shivering and sneezing histamine reaction described by posters above, as well as a wave of sadness on one occasion that felt like every sadness I’d ever experienced, all at once, when using a MMJ tincture. But vaping has turned out to be a fabulous, mellow high without those side effects. I use a high CBD/low THC vape during the day, and the reverse at night. Don’t drink but enjoyed pot as a teen and young adult, but it’s definitely a bit different when older.

by Anonymousreply 47May 8, 2020 1:28 AM

I know a loser who is in his 30’s and smokes pot every day and has done so since he was a teenager. And he’s a bitch when he isn’t highly. I have nothing against people who do it here and there or just on the weekends, but if you do it every single day and don’t have a medical issue, you are obviously trying to escape from reality.

by Anonymousreply 48May 8, 2020 1:33 AM

[quote] Here's something to consider if you are thinking of trying edibles. It takes 2-3 hours to feel the full effects,

Doesn't take me that long. It takes me 45-60 minutes. The same is true for most of my friends, and it's also what it says on the label of the package of the edibles I use (from Serra in Oregon).

by Anonymousreply 49May 8, 2020 1:43 AM

I’m in my 60s and I have a gummy bear edible almost daily for back pain. It makes me a little high. I would talk to the people at the dispensary, they are very knowledgeable. They turned me on to the 110 mg strength and it’s perfect for me. It’s the only medicine I need to take.

by Anonymousreply 50May 8, 2020 1:47 AM

[quote] No, some of you are just old and shouldn't partake if you're going to whinge about it afterwards.

I'm just over 50--I assume you would call that old-- and I will whinge about whatever I like, when i like, and how I like. Deal with it!

[quote] No sympathy.

That's great, because all of us here have zero shits to give as to whether you live or die,.

by Anonymousreply 51May 8, 2020 1:48 AM

MARY r27!

"I sense an agenda". Do you know how crazy you sound man? Take a deep breath.

by Anonymousreply 52May 8, 2020 1:50 AM

I love the legal weed.

by Anonymousreply 53May 8, 2020 1:57 AM

The weird thing about marijuana is that you never know what you're going to get. You think you've taken the same amount of hits, or bites, or swigs of the juice, but it's always a little different. Some days, you hardly feel any different and other days, you become the most productive or lazy that you've ever been or come up with some great new idea.

by Anonymousreply 54May 8, 2020 2:00 AM

[R52] DL the anti-doper propaganda machine!

by Anonymousreply 55May 8, 2020 2:01 AM

That’s very true, R54. Sometimes you do feel it differently than others, even with a measured dose.

by Anonymousreply 56May 8, 2020 2:03 AM

All about the edibles these days. But the gummies and hard candies don't do a damn thing for me. I used to buy the 10-pack of 10mg cookies, which would generally last me a couple months. I don't partake all that often - usually only for outings (movies, sporting events, hikes, etc.). Somewhat randomly stumbled upon these butter soft candies which are 2.5mg each and come in a 40-count cannister. These are ideal. Much easier to tailor-dose for any occasion. I generally consume 2 - and adventure awaits.

by Anonymousreply 57May 8, 2020 4:48 AM

R49, the length of time it takes for the full effect can vary. It will hit you faster on an empty stomach, for example. I've found that after 45-60 minutes I am just starting to feel it, but the peak effect doesn't hit until about three hours in. I would advise a new user to wait at least that long to make absolutely sure they haven't taken too much. Individual reactions to the drug can vary greatly (as some of the stories posted in this thread illustrate), so it's best to err on the side of caution.

by Anonymousreply 58May 8, 2020 8:02 AM

Is any marijuana good for insomnia. Can any help to make one fall asleep fast?

by Anonymousreply 59May 8, 2020 8:46 AM

Yes babe. It’s the best for sleep. Indica strains, not Sativa.

by Anonymousreply 60May 8, 2020 9:03 AM

I smoked a lot of pot in my younger years. When pot became legal in Oregon I started using it again. I finally gave it up because no matter what strain I used it gave me anxiety.

by Anonymousreply 61May 8, 2020 9:15 AM

I find it amplifies your underlying mood. If you're anxious and tense, it will make you more so. If you're relaxed and happy, it will make you more so. I only smoke when I'm in a good place psychologically.

by Anonymousreply 62May 8, 2020 10:40 AM

Thanks r62.

Maybe I am just more anxious in my 30s than I was in my 20s.

by Anonymousreply 63May 8, 2020 11:25 AM

R30 we're ALL anxious these days!

by Anonymousreply 64May 8, 2020 1:23 PM

I’ve noticed something similar with alcohol.

Even though alcohol is a depressant your brain fights against the effects of the depressant so sometimes you behave as if you’ve had a stimulant.

That’s the way I was when I was in my 20s I could drink quite a bit of vodka and become very hyper even though I was inebriated I could get a lot of housework done and or mow the yard.

Once while I was drunk I took all the furniture out of my bedroom and put down an area rug that almost covered the entire floor and then put everything back in without taking a break.

I stopped drinking at 27 and did not have alcohol again until I was 53.

Now after 3 ounces of 100 proof vodka I experience maybe 10 minutes of drunkenness and then I start to get groggy and sleepy.

I wouldn’t pass out but I would usually go to sleep within an hour I’m taking my first drink.

I quit drinking at 55 because it just seemed a waste of money if all I was going to do was sleep.

by Anonymousreply 65May 8, 2020 2:15 PM

Finally, something that's fun and good for you!

by Anonymousreply 66May 8, 2020 4:01 PM

Edibles are the way to go since the dose is metered. Find the dose you like and stick to it. I find 5mg to be perfect because I'm not high enough that the high itself is the focus, just enough to enhance whatever I'm doing.

by Anonymousreply 67May 8, 2020 5:01 PM

I make my own edibles. I never get Sativa, it's just not for me, and I do look at reviews of what I'm buying before I purchase it. After I decarb it I add it to cookie dough. I make around 75 cookies with 1/8 oz. and just eat one cookie at a time. I store them in the freezer.

It kicks in after around an hour and never feels like too much and lasts much longer than when I smoke it. It's also much cheaper and more consistent than buying edibles.

by Anonymousreply 68May 8, 2020 5:18 PM

My bf is a broadway musical queen & i go with him to see everything even though I don’t care for musicals. I only get high when we go to a show. We were out of reef for Beetlejuice & Tootsie - and let me tell you how unbareable those shows were without it ! Mean Girls was awful too but i was high & could deal with it. So thank God for reefer.

by Anonymousreply 69May 8, 2020 5:21 PM

pot makes me feel insane now, my heart pounds in my chest and i have racing thoughts and i hyperventilate and feel like i need to escape. Why do I lose my mind? Whatever happened to chilling out with weed while listening to Pink Floyd? It really might as well be crystal meth or ketamine the way it shocks my system and makes me feel like i’m losing my mind.

by Anonymousreply 70May 8, 2020 5:32 PM

Getting high was a lot of fun in high school and college when I didn't have many responsibilities and could waste an entire day roaming around the city and laughing with friends. It was fun, it was social, but you never got a whole lot of anything done and you'd eat, crash, wake up, watch something on TV or listen to music, decide it was really deep and then fall asleep again.

I just do not have the time or inclination to do that anymore--I feel the same about drinking. Getting shit-faced was fun in college or right after, but now it just seems like I wasted an entire day

by Anonymousreply 71May 8, 2020 5:34 PM

Amen, r69. Since covid arrived, I have often dosed 5mg of edibles for anything I might view as "unbearable," including a handful of Zoom get-togethers (which I generally find tedious).

I've gotten to the point where I can't have more than a glass of wine or I get acid reflux and a headache and feel like trash the next day. Edibles never do that to me and the plus side is that they make me really productive, too, and I have more fun with menial tasks. I don't like to be anywhere but inside my own house when I do it, though. Sometimes, a little anxiety can sneak up on you and I was once convinced I had a ghost living in my house, because my dog wouldn't stop barking at nothing, so my mind instantly went to "he must be seeing a ghost."

by Anonymousreply 73May 8, 2020 6:25 PM

r71, have you tried the legal weed? In college, I would smoke pot and that would be it for the day. The pot now, after I smoke it (I don't anymore), I come down so gradually that all of a sudden I will realize I'm no longer stoned. It doesn't give the burned out feeling.

by Anonymousreply 74May 8, 2020 6:36 PM

R70, maybe you should try high-CBD strains or perhaps a CBD oil. CBD has a calming effect. It acts like a "rescue inhaler" when you've had too much THC. Avoid the types of CBD or hemp oil products that are sold in gas stations, drug stores or on Amazon. There are a lot of shady sellers out there pushing products that contain little or no actual CBD. I am a big fan of the CBD products from Bluebird Botanicals in Colorado. They ship by mail all over the U.S. I've also heard that chewing black peppercorns is a remedy, though I've never tried it.

by Anonymousreply 75May 8, 2020 8:09 PM

So nothing about sex and weed. Pity.

by Anonymousreply 76May 10, 2020 9:09 PM

Do chime in R76.

I know that I've had amazing sex after I smoked, but I've also gone too far inside my own thoughts, and shut down. I prefer to totally straight (as it were) for sex. YMMV.

by Anonymousreply 77May 10, 2020 9:12 PM

R34 Your choice of wording is quite telling. "Have a relationship with...." Really? It reads as if ANYONE who enjoys not being 100% sober 24/7 is an addict to you. You fail to make the proper distinctions, therefore you're disqualified in my mind to be opining on the topic here. Your magical age threshold is also a bunch of nonsense.

If anyone has the right to partake, it's mature adults. Multiple studies prove we generally make the best decisions as regards risk taking, rather than the youth, or young adults. If anything, I daresay we old cats bloody well deserve it the most. (partly because we must exist with people such as yourself!) Obviously you're not fond of drink either, so it's obvious you only come here as a scold and a buzzkill.

People still indulge because it feels good. Plain and simple. A no brainer, as you Americans like to say. Some reap the benefits of inducing sleep, or quelling pain. Turning to a natural herb seems smarter than choosing Big Pharma's tablets / pills first. It enhances creativity and sexual response for the majority who enjoy its effects.

It sounds like you need to go smoke some reefer and chill the fuck out.

by Anonymousreply 78May 10, 2020 9:51 PM

R78, some people are so anxious about drugs that they turn into Hazelden zombies and see pathology in any kind of use. I don't let them bother me, just do my best to protect myself from their anxiety and puritanism and go on with my life.

by Anonymousreply 79May 11, 2020 4:39 PM

R77, I mentioned it briefly earlier in the thread but no one else has. Obviously not everyone gets this benefit, but for a small percentage of us, cannabis is sexual magic.

For me, it revs up an already strong libido and makes sexual sensations so intense it's the same feeling you have just before you know you're about to ejaculate, only it goes on and on with what I would call near-orgasms every few minutes at the most. The sensation is cumming but without semen, just a lot of pre-seminal fluid. I have to have a drop cloth because there is so much. Then after a while surfing from orgasm to orgasm, the big one hits with ultra intensity and a massive ejaculation of actual semen.

No paranoia or crawling into my own brain. I have no idea how many people get this benefit from MJ. If I could bottle it, I'd be the richest person in history.

by Anonymousreply 80May 11, 2020 4:49 PM

I mentioned up thread how I get so mentally weirded out but if I knew that anytime I smoked pot there was a hot. willing partner with hot dick within 6 ft. of me , I could manage every time. Great aphrodisiac but I don't have time for the "head" shit that comes with pot

by Anonymousreply 81May 11, 2020 4:59 PM

R78 EXACTLY. R34 and R48 Why are you two Judgy McJudgersteins here, other than to look down your noses at those of us who enjoy weed?

Finding the right dosage is paramount to anything.

Treat this baking experience like a literal baking experience. You need to use the right amount of ingredients.

by Anonymousreply 83May 11, 2020 5:15 PM

There is nothing more fun than to get high and wank off to some arcane, super raunchy porn. Just saying..

by Anonymousreply 84May 13, 2020 1:55 AM

As a Navarro native once told me, pot is a sacred medicinal herb not meant to be smoked but ingested. You'll get all the benefits of it, even the best high if you eat it or make some tea with it. Burning the herb will make it lose 90% of its good effects.

by Anonymousreply 85May 13, 2020 3:16 AM

The legalization of marijuana in my state has been one of the best things that ever happened to me.

It manages my pain without opiods. It's not addictive. And it relieves a lot of the anxiety related to old age/ illness.

The country needs to legalize marijuana.

by Anonymousreply 86May 13, 2020 3:20 AM

An edible high is always way better for me. The first few times I did it, I smoked it and I really didn't feel like it had any effect on me, but the first time I did an edible, it was insane.

by Anonymousreply 87May 13, 2020 3:37 AM

Old timey joint smoker here. Every time I go to buy rolling papers, the selection gets smaller and smaller and the sit around on the shelves so long the papers get all dried out or the glue is faded away. I’m a dying breed.

by Anonymousreply 88May 13, 2020 3:41 AM

Dispensaries have good roll your own supplies...if you live in a legal weed state.

by Anonymousreply 89May 13, 2020 3:58 AM

Wait, which state has closed dispensaries?

by Anonymousreply 90May 13, 2020 5:21 AM

Having smoked regularly for many years in my hippie youth, I stopped for decades as my career became important and I had more to lose.

67 now, started again about a year ago. I love it. So grateful for all of you who helped legalize it. I use it for insomnia, and pain. It’s a godsend.

by Anonymousreply 91May 13, 2020 6:01 AM

The tut tutters of DL are out there tonight. I'm 39, raised/live in LA and I love to smoke daily. I smoke after work in the evenings. The one change I've noticed as I've gotten older is that I like to smoke sativa right before working out where before I was strictly indica. I have ADHD and smoking makes me more patient and I think honestly I'm a nicer, better person when I'm high or slightly buzzed. I have really good sex stoned if the vibe is right. It can be really sensual and hot. It's been a godsend during this quarantine. I'm working on projects, learning new programs. With weed, life is always entertaining.

by Anonymousreply 92May 13, 2020 6:55 AM

I started back using cannabis products after 20 of not touching it. Once it was legalized and regulated, I found information on sites like leafly.com and an app called weedmaps. Then I went to my dispensary during an off time and chatted with the bud-tender. She recommended a few things and also suggested the CBD addition. Sort of a yin to the THC yang. I've really enjoyed it. Pain in ankles and hands has subsided, inflammation as well. I have been able to stop taking xanax for my occasional anxiety issues. And it lifts my spirits like little else. Even cleaning my place or tending to my yard is less of a chore and more fun. And it makes movies so much more entertaining. Even just to chill out and listen to music. I could go on, but I won't. Works for me and once I got a bit smarter about cannabis, I learned how to use it wisely.

by Anonymousreply 93May 13, 2020 7:00 AM

I smoked more as a teen and almost never as an adult. I grew up in Hawaii, so it was always available. Plus, my uncle was dying of cancer and he didn't want to toke alone. We would always want "buds" and the higher the quality, the smoother the toke. I knew when the stuff was good when I just had three drags and I was gone. I would buy a bunch of snacks and just eat while watching Up In Smoke or the Groove Tube over and over again.

Good times.

by Anonymousreply 94May 13, 2020 8:02 AM

I grew up in Hawai'i in the 00's and the best stuff! No paranoia, no anxiety, just a smooth mellow sfow.

When I moved to Los Angeles to go to school I went to a frat party with some of my roommates and we did gravity bings. I coughed like I was having an asthma attack and I felt really woozy and so not cool. I think they might have added something or it was just grow that way.

I hate to imagine how potent the stuff is now.

by Anonymousreply 95May 13, 2020 8:09 AM

I love how people try to describe the difference between Indica and Sativa. Useless descriptions because they work differently on different people.

All regulated marijuana products (weed itself, edibles, vapes) are labeled indica, sativa, or hybrid (both). Anyone who uses cannabis products should try each one separately and see what effect it has on them. One might make you very relaxed, another might make you paranoid (As is the case with me). The drug war really fucked people's ability to learn about specific drugs and dosage. For a long time I thought marijuana made me paranoid, hungry, and forgetful--turns out it was just sativa strains that did that.

Also, try the vapes!! Much lighter effect than smoking. The vapes are safe--it's the illegal bullshit ones that are sending people to the hospital. If you buy it in a store, it's probably ok.

if you can't buy it in a store where you live, call your local state representatives and senator and ask how long it will be until marijuana will be legal and readily available in your state.

by Anonymousreply 96May 13, 2020 8:26 AM

[quote]Even just to chill out and listen to music.

The absolute best. Better than therapy and Xanax. Combined.

by Anonymousreply 97May 13, 2020 10:44 AM

I must be the only one in the world for whom marijuana (edibles to be precise) exacerbates pain. The littlest tinge of pain will be amped and become physically unbearable. I wonder what that’s about.

by Anonymousreply 98May 15, 2020 2:32 PM

I've occassionally smoked weed since my teens and I'm in my 50s now. I tend to appreciate the smooth relaxing highs more than the ones that makes me anxious and a tad paranoid. Since most times I wasn't too educated on the difference strains (indica vs. sativa vs. hybrid), I never smoked when I had a lot on my mind because I wasn't sure if I would smoke something that would chill me out or freak me out. Within the last couple of years I've done research and became very interested in the Blue Dream strain. Tried it, LOVE IT, and it is my strain of choice. No matter what's going on, it gives me the nicest smoothest high with a bit of a cerebral effect.

In DC, we have a online weed delivery service that will bring it to your location like Door Dash brings food. I'll be very pleased if marijuana is legalized throughout the country and anyone can go to a weed dispensary and purchase weed.

Any other Blue Dream smokers here? Any recommendations for similar strains?

by Anonymousreply 99May 15, 2020 7:48 PM

Bump!

by Anonymousreply 100May 16, 2020 9:54 PM

I’m in my early sixties. When I go to the dispensary to get my edibles for back pain, I try to talk to people my age who are waiting in line. Sadly I’ve found that most are there to alleviate their cancer treatment symptoms. I feel so lucky to just use it for pain relief. My thought is that cannabis is a little bit like alcohol, you build a tolerance. High school kids don’t start by drinking martinis. So get a prescription and try it for yourself. If you ever need it to ease the chemotherapy side effects, you’ll know what to expect.

by Anonymousreply 101May 17, 2020 4:06 AM

R99 I'm also a long time Blue Dream fan and have recently enjoyed XJ 13 for similar outcomes that you mentioned you enjoy.

[quote] If you are a newbie or someone who hasn't used cannabis in years, you have no tolerance to THC. It will hit you harder, and if you take too much it won't be a pleasant experience.

When I first started smoking in my late teens - those were some of the best experiences I ever had of it. It felt like finding a lover. I'm such a pothead. I'm very sensitive to it. I never really liked any other drug nor booze. That's part of the pothead personality. I'm sure many of you know.

In England we used to smoke hash in the 80s. It was in America in those days that I really experienced good grass - it was very druggy and fun.

I've lived many years without it and have started smoking again. The advice on here is really useful to me. The stuff I've been smoking is pretty intense and not as funny. But it still gives me the munchies. Eating some chocolate last week (British Twix) while high was like having an orgasm.

by Anonymousreply 103May 18, 2020 12:43 PM

Before grass became legal here in Illinois, I was fond of some medical marijuana my dealer had on offer called San Fernando Valley Project, with a number after it... I'm thinking it was 49... The bag had a huge computer printed label SFV PROJECT 49 or s49.... Anyone know this strain? It was a delightful body buzz, but definitely Sativa. Not quite as paralytic as Purple Kush, Orange Kush, or the like.

I've recently lost track of him, but would like to know what that strain exactly is, and properly named. It's ironic the label expressly stated it was good for seizures, and I do suffer seizure disorder. It really agreed with me.

Cheers, TIA.

by Anonymousreply 104May 19, 2020 1:41 AM

R104, maybe it's SFV (San Fernando Valley) OG?

by Anonymousreply 105May 21, 2020 4:09 AM

R105 Cheers, but no cigar... As it most definitely was San Fernando Valley PROJECT, and then followed by a "#" and a numeral.

by Anonymousreply 106May 23, 2020 9:17 PM

We only have medical marijuana legal in Maryland. You have to go to a government website and provide all sorts of personal information to apply. Then you have to find a doctor to prescribe. I don't think Kaiser Permanente is up to that yet. I was high from about 18 till 23. Then drifted away from pot. Over the years, I rarely indulged, but each time I did, I thought it was the the best. I'm 61 now, and about 3 years ago I was unemployed, and depressed. I asked my daughter to get me some. Mainly I got high late at night, and used it to sleep better, and reduce muscle pain and spasms. If it wasn't for the pot, I don't think I would of mentally made it through being hopelessly unemployed. I stopped when I got a job. I can't wait for it to become legal recreationally. I will first in line at the counter.

by Anonymousreply 107May 23, 2020 9:43 PM

I only smoked occasionally from my teens till I was 35. My sister's then husband started giving me great pot. A love affair started then and now I am 54. I smoke pot at the end of the day the way my father use to have a drink or a beer. It calms me down, I can't lie to myself high, it opens everything up., and it chips away at my ego and my hate. I will smoke till the day I die. I also fine that it helps with sleep, my appetite improves, music makes higher than the pot while baked, and I have far more interesting conversations. But mostly it wakes me up. Makes me think. No other drug- not even liquor- makes me feel so connected to the things of the world. I swear I think Christ must have been high to be so peaceful and loving. And people have smoked weed all over the world, during every century.

by Anonymousreply 108May 23, 2020 11:14 PM

Right on R108! Cheers...🤓👍
