Climate experts call for Michael Moore’s film of “half-truths and lies” to be pulled

A new Michael Moore-produced documentary about the apparent hypocrisy of the green movement has been labelled “dangerous, misleading and destructive” by climate scientists and environmental campaigners.

Jeff Gibbs, who wrote and directed Planet Of The Humans, along with Moore has been accused in a letter of releasing a “shockingly misleading and absurd” film that makes false claims about renewable energy.

In the letter written by Gasland documentary maker Josh Fox, which was signed by various scientists and activists, the opponents urge the removal of the film after claiming that it “trades in debunked fossil fuel industry talking points” that question the affordability and reliability of solar and wind energy. The note states that these alternatives are now cheaper to run than fossil fuels such as coal.

Planet Of The Humans was released on the eve of Earth Day (April 21) by Moore, the documentary maker known for Fahrenheit 9/11 and Bowling for Columbine. In the new film it’s argued that electric cars and solar energy are unreliable and rely upon fossil fuels to function.

Additionally, prominent climate change activist Al Gore is criticised for helping corporations that test out what is claimed are ineffective technologies over real solutions to the climate crisis.

Michael Mann, a climate scientist and signatory to Fox’s letter, said the film includes “various distortions, half-truths and lies” and that the filmmakers “have done a grave disservice to us and the planet by promoting climate change in activist tropes and talking points.”

Who gives a fuck? Our president is a Nazi and about to steal an election!

Michael Moore is a piece of shit. He was Susan Sarandon in 2000 and then he profited off of a situation he helped create with Fahrenheit 9/11. He's not on the same level as Ann Coulter but he is still vile.

Fat, greasy, money-grabbing, sanctimonious turd.

by Anonymousreply 4May 7, 2020 6:16 PM

Great film. Which he did not make.

by Anonymousreply 5May 7, 2020 6:19 PM

Good God, he looks like a nasty old lady now. I guess someone had to fill the role after Don Imus died.

by Anonymousreply 6May 7, 2020 6:30 PM

He’s a Russian Stooge.

Michael Moore is right about the fact that Solar Panels and Wind Turbines require MASSIVE Fossil fuel inputs to manufacture. How is this a LIE?

by Anonymousreply 8May 7, 2020 6:43 PM

Uh oh, Mikey spoke against the orthodoxy, now watch the canceling in real time! Left/liberal/whateverthefucks have gone completely psychotic!

by Anonymousreply 9May 7, 2020 6:56 PM

I'm no fan of that phony baloney asshole Bill McKibben. Delights me to see him skewered by his own words and I predicted the backlash he would organize would be vicious. Upperclass prig who thinks he owns the pulpit of environmental outrage. Fuck him. Go do something about the tree poaching on your backstep you damned coward.

Moore hit them hard and deservedly. Gore and company are sell outs and fools.

Bullshit environmental groups saving the backyards and views of anyone with enough money to contribute: The Nature Conservancy, Trustees of Reservations (just bought a goddamned sculpture park in the richest suburb of the US), and The Sierra Club. Snotty bluenoses who do this to keep the riff raff out of these beautiful places, charge fees to get in, or membership dues, and think hunting is just dandy when the hunters who want to use these lands give lots and lots of money.

Give your donations to smaller organizations or some that actually do something for the regular, not rich, public.

This is what the far left doesn’t get. We’re not you. The majority of democrats/liberals are not you. That’s why you lose elections. It’s not us who are the outliers. It’s you. Rail all you want. Call us names. We still outnumber you & won’t pander to you.

by Anonymousreply 12May 7, 2020 8:23 PM

I remember the 90s- when you could tell hard truths the left didn't want to hear without being cast out from the tribe.

by Anonymousreply 13May 7, 2020 8:26 PM

R12, but haven't you heard? It's OUR job to make them excited over Joe Biden? Biden is generating plenty of enthusiasm. Hence the fact that he beat Bernie is embarrassing numbers. These loons forget that.

I have conflicting opinions of Michael Moore. I like that he's such a shit-stirrer. His devotional "populism" sometimes appeals to me, sometimes turns me off because he's master and rather simplistic manipulator of progressive heartstrings. His podcast now lodges way far up his ancient fat ass but it's pleasant to listen to his voice and funny to hear the way he slowly crafts his populist propaganda. It's middle brow, and treacly, like Frank Capra was, but you got to admire his craft.

Feels like Michael’s collapse is close to complete!

R12, there is no 'far left' you idiot. Go back to your little conservative cave and count your toes. I think one is missing.

I have seen the movie. It is in the style of Moore, but not quite as doofy. I don't have the peer reviewed science to back it all up, but it is fairly reasonable. It takes a lot of dirty inputs to make "clean" solar and wind technology. There is also a hilarious but where McKibben pretends that he has no idea who funds his organization.

by Anonymousreply 18May 7, 2020 9:48 PM

*hilarious bit

by Anonymousreply 19May 7, 2020 9:48 PM

McKibben comes off really badly in the movie. Reason enough to take a look, imo. Self-righteous asshole born with a silver spoon betraying his followers and anyone wonders where the opposition is coming from?

Moore is, whether you love or hate him, the real deal. McKibben, whom I've met and worked with....not so much.
