Nearly 20,000 teens in Georgia have gotten their driver licenses without taking an official road test, according to the state's Department of Driver Services.

cars practically drive themselves these days. this isn't a problem.

Well, this doesn't seem like a good idea.
Then again, we don't really know the statistics. For all we know, the rate of failure on the driving portion might be 0.01% because the requirements are so lax. It may not make a meaningful difference in outcomes...unless you're killed by that 0.01% who would have failed, that is.

They should at least have the people who used to administer the driving tests follow the person being tested for like 10 minutes, just to make sure they know how to drive and aren't breaking all sorts of laws. Just give them a destination to drive to, and follow them.

I live in Georgia (it's super racist) and I work down the street from the main Driver's License office
Every afternoon I almost get into an accident because of some asshole driving to the driver's license office
If Corona doesn't kill us, these drivers will

Drivers licenses don't kill people, people kill people.

Step aside, Alabama! You are no longer butt of the joke in the states, George is now!

This is a temporary measure taken during the pandemic so I'm okay with this (I live in Georgia). I think I would be okay if it was not temporary. The road test is conducted on a simple track and requires the applicants to drive once around the track and make one complete stop. It is a closed track, perfectly flat with four turns. Good drivers are made from driving experience; they aren't demonstrated by someone's ability to drive once around a closed track. The applicants have to have had their learner's permits for 366 days so the vast majority of them have a year's driving experience under their belts before they can apply for a driver's license.

Utterly flawed logic.
If the pandemic is so severe that such an action needs to be taken, it is also so severe that people ought not be driving around and certainly teenagers have limited reason to be driving around enough to require an upgrade from a learner's permit to unrestricted driver's license.

r13 is the stupidest person on earth. If it’s fine now, then it’s fine always, no one needs to *learn* how to drive, it’s innate, like breathing, give 3 year olds licenses, fuck it, why even bother licensing drivers, just let everyone drive with no proof of competency, education is for liberals right? No one actually needs to know anything to do their job, look at our fine president and those lying scientists! I hope you walk into traffic.
