Holly Hunter vs Frances McDormand vs Sissy Spacek

Whom do you consider to be the best actor of the three? What are your favorite performances from each?

I loved the Susan Sarandon vs Sigourney Weaver thread.

I love all three, but I have a particular fondness for Holly Hunter. She was good in Broadcast News and Living Out Loud.

Frances is definitely the worst. She plays everything the same way and completely one dimensional.

by Anonymousreply 2May 5, 2020 11:38 PM

My favorite Sissy performance was in Crimes of the Heart.

by Anonymousreply 3May 5, 2020 11:41 PM

Sissy Spacek for sure. In The Bedroom and Badlands. Epic performances, she's also funny in that terrible movie with Vince Vaughn and Reese.

This thread will end in country accents.

Frances has the most awards, and we all know that’s how you measure greatness.

by Anonymousreply 6May 5, 2020 11:46 PM

It’s a tie between these two. Don’t make me choose!

I just watched The Piano for the first time the other day. Holly Hunter was so fucking good

by Anonymousreply 8May 5, 2020 11:59 PM

Sissy Spacek first, then Frances. I never 'got' the appeal of HH. Maybe I've just missed all of her good roles. She annoyed immensely in Copycat.

Sissy. I didn't truly appreciate how brilliant she was until I saw in some kids movie called Trading Mom that my brother's kids were watching. It's a terrible movie, but she plays 4 completely different women in it and manages to make them all believable and interesting. I kept thinking "why is she not as well regarded as Streep, because she's giving this dumb movie a whole lot more than it deserves."

Why are you pitting them against each other?

I love all three

It’s hard to choose between Sissy and Frances. Sissy had a few more hits though. Carrie, Coal Miners Daughter, Badlands, etc.,

by Anonymousreply 12May 6, 2020 12:44 AM

Sissy usually picks really interesting and diverse projects, so I'm gonna go with her.

by Anonymousreply 13May 6, 2020 1:05 AM

I’m not surprised that Sissy is winning, but I’m shocked that Holly is losing so badly.

by Anonymousreply 14May 6, 2020 11:12 AM

Sissy easily but I do like the other two as well. Best performances; Spacek - a gallery of wealth to choose from there (Badlands, Carrie, 3 Women, Missing Coal Miner's Daughter, Raggedy Man, Crimes of the Heart, In the Bedroom, The Straight Story, The Grass Harp, The Long Walk Home, 'night Mother - where does one start?) Hunter - Broadcast News, The Piano & Thirteen, McDormand - Fargo though she is usually good in most of the films she appeared in except the hideous Three Billboards tripe.

All three of them have an impressive slate of TV appearances as well. Really we are talking top shelf with these three.

by Anonymousreply 15May 9, 2020 6:05 AM

Why do I have to choose?

Three of my favourites. Each one unique and irreplaceable.

by Anonymousreply 16May 9, 2020 6:38 AM

Sissy was so great in 9 to 5.

And Frances! Well, what can you say about a talking mule? Who could top that?

But my vote goes to Holly Hunter. How can you say no to that adorable face?

R11 and R16 for the WIN!

OP, you should be ashamed of yourself for bringing up the subject!

by Anonymousreply 18May 9, 2020 7:05 AM

Sissy Spacek

And it’s not even close, OP.

by Anonymousreply 19May 9, 2020 7:07 AM

Spacek and Duvall are so endlessly fascinating in 3 Women. And Carrie really should be recognized as one of the all time great performances. Who else could have brought such empathy to that character? She made it tragic.
