West Village, NYC, on May 2nd 2020
Look at all those people hanging out, most with no masks, like there isn’t a Pandemic.
And look at who the main miscreants are. The ones always acting holier than thou about everyone else and speaking about the importance of rules and obeying laws etc. ...
Hmmm.
Hypocrites.

Deplorables wanna go outside and end this, and you all tear them apart on here daily for it and shit on them for it and not following the rules (see the threads on Georgia, Florida or Huntington Beach), but now that NYC is doing it suddenly you’re defending this and suddenly no longer see an issue with it? I have now seen a video clearly taken very recently, probably yesterday, because some people are wearing masks. Of the piers. A lot of people. It's unclear if at least some social distancing is going on because of how it is shot or how many are wearing masks. But it is disturbing. The photo still seems fake. There may be one mask there but although yesterday was warm it was not warm enough for that degree of undress. Secondly the Daily News did not report it. Finally Sean King is a known liar.

Upon further study, this photograph reeks of fakery. There are a few people, in the background, with what appear to be masks; however, as I pointed out, the woman in the center right (wearing the black tank) has weird shading across the mask, which should be more uniform as the brim of the cap she's wearing is neither bent nor misshapen; the shadow appears to be caused by a source that does not correspond with the position of the sun as shown in shadows elsewhere (for instance, as compared and contrasted with the guy further to the right and closer to the camera, with the dog in his lap and sitting next to the guy in a bright red shirt; the shadow on his face is uniform and corresponds with others); . Further, note that all of the masks that appear in the photo are in the background, difficult to see clearly and easily photoshopped in. Finally, there are few clues in the photo that may reveal the date the photo was taken, like street signs and advertisements (and ubiquitous pride flags).
As opposed to the photo at R51, where I can see (at least) three guys with tattoos, a more diverse mixture of people, and more men with facial hair. But, alas, few masks, although the park isn't nearly as crowded and thus the people appear to be further apart.
If the photos are real, a pox on them all. And the deplorables wonder why governors like Newsom have to close the beaches.

R74 if you want to stay home until the vaccine go right ahead. Otherwise, yes we have to learn to live with it and with “people dying”
The only point of staying at home was to slow the spread so the hospitals didn’t get overwhelmed. We did more than our part — and 30 million Americans lost their jobs — to make that happen. Great. Now we have lives to start reliving and bills to pay.

The death toll was recently predicted to max out at 50-60,000 people. We are likely to pass 70,000 tomorrow. Now the President says he hopes it remains under 100,000. A lot of businesses who opened when the governors allowed them are realizing they can't operate because people are still staying away. It costs more to open a business and have a fraction of prior income than it is to stay closed.
I think there will be a public reckoning when the death toll hits a high number. Everyone will be scared. I hope it doesn't surpass 200,000 before we get there.

[quote] if you want to stay home until the vaccine go right ahead. Otherwise, yes we have to learn to live with it and with “people dying”
No, what people should be doing is staying home and practicing social distancing until the virus runs it's course enough so that the numbers aren't constantly rising every day!
[quote]Now we have lives to start reliving and bills to pay.
People like you don't care if it's someone else's friend or grandmother. You probably wouldn't even care if it was your own. This virus can strike anyone from the oldest of the old to the youngest of the young and that includes you as well. "Eh? Just another dead body! Step over it!"
There's a serious lack of social responsibility/selfishness in the United States and this virus is going to teach everyone a couple of harsh lessons.
We're all connected whether we like it or not and what we do can affect other people.
And the United States isn't special or gifted enough to overcome something so quickly that other countries are still struggling with.

This thread illustrates perfectly the hypocrisy of the DL. If that photo had been labeled "Klyde Warren Park, Dallas. Today, May 2, 2020", the comments here would be more along the lines of:
"Adios, Texas. I've waited a long, long, time to watch you all finish yourselves off."
"Texans are very proud of their free-dumb and their wide open spaces, of which they have many, mostly between their ears."
"That's fine. let THEM be the guinea pigs."
"Leave Texas alone ... God knows it needs weedin' out."
But since it's NYC, we get:
"It’s beautiful out. So go out and enjoy it."
"Clearly cabin fever is a real thing and they are tacitly, and perhaps foolishly, accepting a degree of risk."
"Stop you’re fucking pearl clutching already — it’s gorgeous out and you’re not their mother."
"Why should healthy people in NY who are not in high risk groups have to stay inside to pacify some prissy Karens"
New Yorkers are as much Deplorables as any Deplorable who ever deplored in Deploraville, Mississippi. And hypocrites on top of it.

At one corner there was a group of 10+ people laughing and having a good time (without masks) and taking up the entire corner.
I'm tempted to start taking photos of these assholes and posting them on twitter or some other social media. We're not out of the woods yet and they are acting like there is no pandemic.

Doesn’t surprise me. People are wearing thin - even ones who have 4BR houses with yards as well as those living in 300 sq ft studio apartments in NYC. We have done a good job at minimizing hospital overwhelm. NYC hospitalizations and deaths - the most reliable stats - are way down.
I think we should still be officially closed - but if people need to get out, I’m fine with that. They are risking their own exposure. Most of them are young. I’m 53 and am probably at risk, I’ll stay home and remain cautious longer. I don’t hate these people. We need to slowly loosen the valve and this is one small step in that process - outside.

I agree. I’m an NP and was suicidal on Friday. I hadn’t been outside in weeks. I couldn’t garden - it’s too cold & the ground is wet. I can’t paint, stain, clean mildew or mow the lawn - it’s raining, it has rained every day (or night) for months where I am. I said to my husband “We’re driving to your office an hour and a half away on Saturday. You will pick up your mail. I will see something besides walls.”
Turned out to be a glorious day. It lifted my spirits. I saw young people on the streets in masks enjoying the sun. It made me feel so good to see them. I’ve missed people. I went to a supermarket that wasn’t wiped out by an influx of summer home owners fleeing city in March. It was a marvel to see all the vegetables.
I got a sunflower plant I ordered. It’s small. It’s supposed to spread 3 ft by 4 ft. If I could plant it, maybe it would reach that height & width. But it’s turning cold & rainy again. There’s no way that sunflower is going to get the size before the end of summer.

It’s actually not an apples to apples comparison as much as you all would like to think. People in New York have been stuck in their tiny apartments for 2 months, finally got a beautiful weekend and took advantage of it for their sanity (while the majority were social distancing and following the rules). Most of the Texans etc (who live in big ass houses with yards anyway) are just trying to make a political statement about their “liberty.” There is a difference so the different reaction is not “hypocritical,” as rousing as that sounds.

No, R141, it's the insanity of some delusional New York DL posters, who are very similar to their native son, Donald Trump. They pass responsibility to someone else ( tourists, transplants), ridicule every place that is not where they are, and constantly seek approval in order to make them feel better about themselves. Can't you just fucking admit that some of your citizens, inhabitants of the most affected city in the entire world, have no regard for anyone else, and have made your self-congratulating ridicule of every other city where people have violated safety precautions seem foolish? Christ, no wonder you produce Donald Trumps by the thousands. Take your lumps on this one, because you deserve it. Any attempt at rationalization makes you look like complete asses.

I personally don’t like laying on the ground on a blanket. The ground is lumpy and you can feel it through the blanket, also the closer you get to the grass the more humid it feels and also the dusty/pollony smell. And it takes a few days for the grass to really dry out after a rain so sitting there eventually you’ll get a wet ass unless it’s been dry for the last few days.
This is all “LOOK AT ME!” at its best.

People Are Misusing the Six Foot Rule to Continue Their Normal Routines
People are over-interpreting the directive to stay “six feet apart” as permission to do everything they’d normally do, so long as they keep a six-foot bubble of space around them at all times.
The CDC guidelines for preventing getting sick are extremely clear about staying home as much as possible. In New York, the epicenter of the U.S. outbreak, the coronavirus-prevention tagline is literally just, “Stay home to stop the spread of coronavirus,” not “Stay home, unless you really want to see your friend or go on a godforsaken Tinder date, in which case play with fire and dance very close to the six-feet-apart limit, and maybe go in for a hug if you feel it.”
The CDC and most local governments also now recommend wearing a non-medical mask and maintaining a distance of at least six feet when in public, a directive some people seem to have misunderstood as an “either/or” situation. Just like wearing a mask out in public doesn’t replace social distancing, going out of your way to see friends, even from a “safe” distance, doesn’t replace the foremost advice to stay home as much as possible. Some combination of misinterpretation and flat-out ignorance of these guidelines, which are only meant to keep you and others healthy, is what led to reported overcrowding in public parks all last weekend.

I'm wondering if 50% or more of very social young people picked this up January-March. I bet you'd find 50% with antibodies if you could test. Certainly NY residents, and urban colleges on both coasts. I think it raged through European colleges from Dec-March making little dent in their health. They probably spread it around during their early, if even noticed, infections.

I live in nyc and saw so many people not wearing masks and not social distancing over the weekend. It’s every age group, every race, every gender (ok, I didn’t see any obvious trans out and about). Basically, all of these people are saying “my comfort is more important than your safety.”
Cuomo is usually great, but his philosophy that we should shame those not wearing masks instead of fining them is just stupid. Everyone outside without a mask should get a $500 fine and a 10-pack of masks so they don’t do it again.

You must be mistaken, R162. That couldn't possibly have been the case in New York City. Everyone there wears a mask and keeps a 6-foot distance from other people. And that's if they even leave their shoebox apartments at all. Because the rules say don't leave home unless you absolutely have to. And New Yorkers are notorious for following all the rules. You must have been in Louisville, or Tulsa, or Birmingham. It's like the wild west there. No one, and I mean not a single person, follows the rules there. That's why they all deserve to die a horrible death.

I was one of those in Central Park over the weekend. The photos are a bit misleading. Yes, there were a lot of people, but the only ones close together were either families, couples, or close friends. In other words, people who would be congregating together in private anyway. Strangers all kept apart. Most people walking to and from the park wore masks, but once in the park, sitting down (separated), the masks came off.

New Yorkers aren't getting shit for not wearing masks or social distancing as much as for the " holier than thou" attitude that many of you took over what was happening in other cities, even though you have ( by far) the highest rate of infection in the world). " They're from a red state, they should just die." But who's dying? New Yorkers. So, on a nice day, when you are doing what is being done around the country in going outside and perhaps violating social distancing, we get," Oh it's a media telephoto lens to make us look bad. But the people from red states are stupid and deserve to die for doing the same thing that we are doing." You deserve the shit that you are getting. Take it and move on.

Many NYC residents, especially inhabitants of Manhattan live in rather close quarters.
Average studio size at 550 square feet, and one-bedrooms begin at 750; even there you have many units that are somewhat smaller. Add to this a good number of persons share their households with one or more persons. None of this normally matters because people are out a good part of the day (work, school, etc..). Forcing people to remain indoors in close confines for long periods all but assures murder is bound to happen. People just begin getting on each others nerves.
Anyone who has lived in NYC can tell you that first nice days of spring you see everyone hitting parks, beaches or any other public space outdoors. In fact same could be said pretty much of all large urban areas from Paris, France to Paris, Texas.

Wrong.
Paris, London, and many other European cities have large numbers of inhabitants living in apartments/multi-family housing. Ditto for Boston, SF and many other American urban areas.
In fact cities are often defined by high density living which is achieved by multi-family housing in many forms. They can be in two-six story rental buildings, co-ops, condos or whatever, but they are all still apartments.
