What is it like to live in West Hollywood- especially right now?

Is it a nice area? Livable? What are some things to watch out for there? Anyone live there?

by Anonymousreply 69May 5, 2020 4:33 AM

Bump

by Anonymousreply 1May 2, 2020 4:45 PM

I’ve only visited. Seems nice.

by Anonymousreply 2May 2, 2020 4:58 PM

Expensive. Even for a ghetto studio. The area is nice but watch out for slumlords

Unless you’re buying in which case everything is overpriced.

by Anonymousreply 3May 2, 2020 5:01 PM

It's a very desirable neighborhood, which means it is very expensive.

by Anonymousreply 4May 2, 2020 5:04 PM

Very NIMBY. If you're not from there (and 90% aren't), you'll need a translator to decipher their parking sign restrictions.

by Anonymousreply 5May 2, 2020 5:05 PM

Much less gay than it used to be. Same goes for most former gayborhoods. I guess Palm Springs and Wilton Manors are still mostly gay.

by Anonymousreply 6May 2, 2020 9:13 PM

Does anyone know if short term rentals in LA? I need to go out there 6/1 and I want to stay somewhere safe while I look for a regular apartment. I’m coming without a car and thought West Hollywood was central. (I’ll get a car after I’m there a bit). I want to be central so the Uber cars aren’t a fortune. Otherwise, I’d stay in Silverlake.

.

by Anonymousreply 7May 2, 2020 10:01 PM

If I had to choose, I’d take Pasadena. But WeHo was and still is a fantastic place to live.

I loved it, and I enjoyed the heck out of it. However, it’s way too overpriced, and it’s becoming more difficult to find rent controlled buildings that aren’t being bought and sold 10x over within a few years.

My building was bought and sold five times by the time I had left. Weinstein owns it now, and his “people” are trying to sell it. It’s going for almost as cheap as it was when sold. Funny how that happens when you have tons of women suing the shit out of ya.

Silverlake is as pricey or more expensive than WeHo, and WeHo is way more walkable and you also get Runyon Canyon so I’d take WeHo before moving to Silverlake, which is filled with insufferable, hipster douchebags now.

by Anonymousreply 8May 2, 2020 10:04 PM

I lived in West Hollywood for a little over a year in the mid-1970s. It was not expensive then and I could get around without a car. You could not avoid having sex all the ime.

by Anonymousreply 9May 2, 2020 10:12 PM

^^ I meant time, of course.

by Anonymousreply 10May 2, 2020 10:12 PM

Also, depends on if your single, married, or wanting to start a family.

If wanting to start a family, or already have kids? Pasadena is the spot. Great school districts, beautiful homes, well maintained city streets and gorgeous parks.

Glendale is also an option.

by Anonymousreply 11May 2, 2020 11:08 PM

Str8 chicks everywhere.

by Anonymousreply 12May 2, 2020 11:10 PM

How likely is it that you think kids are a concern on a gay board r11?

by Anonymousreply 13May 2, 2020 11:17 PM

r11 do you live in Pasadena?

by Anonymousreply 14May 2, 2020 11:20 PM

West Hollywood is only a party town if you want it to be. Believe it or not, things have changed drastically since I moved here in the 90s (let alone giving advice based on the 70s!).

It’s nice, walkable, and most of it is relatively quiet except for the strip of bars.

very expensive cost of living but it is rent controlled: if you find a place you like, never move.

I would consider Pasadena or some other parts of town. Maybe Korea town or studio city for short term. Never Glendale in a thousand years.

Most important is live near work. Life is too short to sit in traffic (assuming traffic resumes in a few weeks).

by Anonymousreply 15May 2, 2020 11:43 PM

You should probably look at airbnb for short term rentals r7.

by Anonymousreply 16May 2, 2020 11:45 PM

R13, welcome to 2020. Gays have children. Any even if they don't, school districts and local parks have a big impact on residential pricing and availability.

by Anonymousreply 17May 3, 2020 12:00 AM

What's wrong with Glendale?

by Anonymousreply 18May 3, 2020 12:01 AM

r11 Pasadena has TERRIBLE schools. Kids go to private school or they move to adjacent cities with outstanding schools, like San Marino or Arcadia.

by Anonymousreply 19May 3, 2020 12:03 AM

Correct r19! Add Temple City to your list. South Pasadena was the top place to put your kid but Arcadia, S M and Temple City surpassed them many years ago.

by Anonymousreply 20May 3, 2020 12:06 AM

My neighbor who teaches for Pasadena schools even says it is terrible.

by Anonymousreply 21May 3, 2020 12:08 AM

Doesn't Lisa Vanderpump own half of West Hollywood?

by Anonymousreply 22May 3, 2020 12:08 AM

R14, I live in Savannah, Ga. currently. I’m on the outskirts.

Savannah is a gorgeous city. It’s combination of new work brownstones and grand Victorian mansions that have been turned in multi housing complexes

The summers are fun, with lots of parties, where people dress up in their weekend best.

People flying in from Japan, Europe, New York. It reminds me of Pasadena, but with jazz history.

Gorgeous town.

Very different than Atlanta. It’s mostly old money, and a decent sized gay community.

For California, I’d return to Ventura County, or Pasadena. For northeast, it would be New York, or North Jersey.

by Anonymousreply 23May 3, 2020 12:13 AM

Pasadena is now crowded to its maximum. Plus, it is boring and hot. Hardly any out gays in the SGV. Don't bother.

by Anonymousreply 24May 3, 2020 12:22 AM

A very small percentage of gay guys have kids r17. It would hardly be the first thing someone thinks of.

by Anonymousreply 25May 3, 2020 12:29 AM

Forget Pasadena. SOUTH Pasadena is the way to go. It can be expensive but it really has that wonderful small town feel.

by Anonymousreply 26May 3, 2020 12:41 AM

[Quote] SOUTH Pasadena is the way to go. It can be expensive but it really has that wonderful small town feel.

WRONG! You are 15 years late. South Pasadena is now filled with traffic. Thousands of cars cutting though neighborhoods. It's become kinda West Side of the East Side. It's sad. Schools quality is bad. Since cv19 started the online schools have been shut down 40% of the time. That's really bad for a city blabbing how great they are. Tear downs homes go a 1 million dollars. Rent is crazy high. Sorry. Don't believe the OVER hype.

by Anonymousreply 27May 3, 2020 12:48 AM

But Michael Myers' house is there.

by Anonymousreply 28May 3, 2020 12:51 AM

I can't tell if R9 is a joke or not - sounds like it is a parody of all the posts on here of people referring to their knowledge of cities based on 30+ year old info.

by Anonymousreply 29May 3, 2020 12:53 AM

R18, don't ask.

by Anonymousreply 30May 3, 2020 12:55 AM

Savannah? Totally irrelevant and the schools are terrible.

South Pasadena schools are fine. Temple City only makes sense if you live in the little sliver that's in the Arcadia school district. Even with out kids, the real estate is worth more.

by Anonymousreply 31May 3, 2020 1:01 AM

I just moved to West Hollywood this month, from the east coast. It's a weird time to be here but I'm happy with the place, I like that fact I can walk everywhere, don't need a car. Of course, nearly everything's closed so it's not quite the same as it would be otherwise. Still, highly recommended place to live.

by Anonymousreply 32May 3, 2020 1:03 AM

Had no idea Pasadena’s schools had gone to shit again. Oh well.

Hey, R31, Savannah might sound like shit to you, but it’s better than 99% of the shit towns in the south, as far as I’m concerned.

The South is filled with bigots, racists, and the ignorantly “brave” of America. Huge mistake moving here, but there are a few spots that make it semi tolerable, and Savannah happens to be one of those spots.

by Anonymousreply 33May 3, 2020 12:48 PM

[quote] Glendale?

Outside of a vintage '70s porn, I'd never seen so much dark chest hair all in one place as I did when I took an advanced swimming class at Glendale Community College.

by Anonymousreply 34May 3, 2020 8:01 PM

[quote]It’s nice, walkable, and most of it is relatively quiet except for the strip of bars.

It is NOT walkable going up those steep ass hills (for example, trying to walk up from Melrose to Sunset).

by Anonymousreply 35May 3, 2020 8:12 PM

I’m not a fan of WeHo. Pasadena is nice.

by Anonymousreply 36May 3, 2020 8:20 PM

I imagine it's expensive. Do struggling actors still rent there?

by Anonymousreply 37May 4, 2020 12:02 AM

Struggling actors can't afford West Hollywood. Those types are going to move to North Hollywood these days.

by Anonymousreply 38May 4, 2020 12:23 AM

R37, what R38 said.

by Anonymousreply 39May 4, 2020 3:25 AM

Struggling actors in WeHo are likely living 4 or 6 to a two bedroom apartment.

by Anonymousreply 40May 4, 2020 4:49 AM

What is Los Feliz like?

by Anonymousreply 41May 4, 2020 5:38 AM

WeHo? Police helicopters endlessly circling all night, non-stop sirens, and endless traffic. Paradise lost.

by Anonymousreply 42May 4, 2020 5:48 AM

[quote] Police helicopters endlessly circling all night

They really should decommission those stupid, extravagant choppers which sound like a war zone. A source of noise pollution. Over $600 per hour for them to fly!

by Anonymousreply 43May 4, 2020 5:57 AM

R41 Great commuter neighborhood. Doesn't really feel like a community. Basically blends into either Silverlake or Hollywood or Atwater, depending on your direction. I really think Koreatown, if you're willing to pay a premium for a parking space, is the best bang for your buck right now.

by Anonymousreply 44May 4, 2020 6:03 AM

Koreatown stinks. Don’t move there, you’ll regret it after a week.

Some days it’s only mild, but when the wind kicks up it’s unbearable. It’s like a sulfer smell sometimes then turns to a gasoline smell. Terrible.

by Anonymousreply 45May 4, 2020 2:27 PM

I live in NYC and would *love* to move to LA now. I’ll tell you that much.

by Anonymousreply 46May 4, 2020 10:38 PM

[Quote] I really think Koreatown

There's zero street parking. ZERO!

by Anonymousreply 47May 4, 2020 10:41 PM

I can’t claim to live there, I’m a Canadian who visits often, but I have slept with many people who do live there and they all seem to like it lol

by Anonymousreply 48May 4, 2020 10:44 PM

The parking and "smell" aside, it's a neighborhood in LA that is actually walkable, relatively affordable and nice location.

Its definitely become a popular place with the people I know who have moved to LA.

by Anonymousreply 49May 4, 2020 10:45 PM

It was ruined by hets, just like everything they touch.

by Anonymousreply 50May 4, 2020 10:46 PM

Also I should add park of an area being walkable, means parking is limited. If you are looking for a walkable neighborhood you know that.

by Anonymousreply 51May 4, 2020 10:48 PM

Trevor Donovan and his partner live up the street from us in WeHo. It's worth it just to see him walk his dogs every morning. A real mensch.

I've lived in LA for 6 years (as of May 1) and I couldn't tell you the borders of Silver Lake and Los Feliz. Most of the time I'm just like...Silver Feliz.

I'm based in Toluca Lake. I like being NEAR everything, but not IN it. I was at a party last year and a guy was talking about his $1800 studio in Weho. Christ.

by Anonymousreply 53May 4, 2020 11:05 PM

My rent-controlled bungalow on Hancock was $350 a month. Yes, I’m ancient.

by Anonymousreply 54May 4, 2020 11:19 PM

I havent lived in WEHO for a long time. A friend was still living there and renting until 2 years ago. She lived in a large but run down 2 bedroom, the building was a unit in a 4plex in the beverly/fairfax area. Her rent at the time was $1850 and she had been there 25 years. Comparable places were renting for at least $2500 a month when she left. A lot of rentals turned into airbnbs. Crime had gotten worse in the area. My feeling when I left a long time ago was you have to be younger, have a lot of energy, have dreams you still hope to realize, and be tough psychologically. It isnt easy as to daily living. The quantity of beautiful people all around you all the time made it almost worth it tho.

I like Pasadena as well. Its near enuf to WeHo and all the rest but still has some midwest average american values if that is anything you are interested in. I would say in the entire LA basin public education sucks and you need to have your kids attending private schools whether you live in Pasadena or Brentwood or anywhere else. Agree tho San Marino has the best public school reputation.

by Anonymousreply 56May 5, 2020 1:00 AM

[quote] entire LA basin public education sucks

R56, how dare you. LAUSD taught me all of the excellent life skills I could ever need for the first 1/4 of my life -- how to jimmy a lock, roll a joint with gum wrappers, and forge your parents' signatures.

by Anonymousreply 57May 5, 2020 1:27 AM

R54. Full of ancient shit.

by Anonymousreply 58May 5, 2020 1:34 AM

If your goal is to live where a bunch of 90 year olds endorse, you’ve come to the right place.

by Anonymousreply 59May 5, 2020 2:47 AM

LA is just odd. WeHo is walkable is its main strength - yet it feels wrong to live in a crappy condo for $2,000 in a city made for driving. Still can’t live without a car since the metro doesn’t serve WeHo. I would do Santa Monica for that price. If I lived in LA it would be to live in a house. But houses are so expensive. Is neither fully walkable - nor easily commutable.

by Anonymousreply 60May 5, 2020 3:22 AM

[quote] I was at a party last year and a guy was talking about his $1800 studio in Weho. Christ.

I’m... not sure if you were joking, but as a New Yorker that is VERY affordable.

by Anonymousreply 61May 5, 2020 3:27 AM

R48 = Connor Jessup

by Anonymousreply 62May 5, 2020 3:29 AM

LA while expensive now, is still not San Francisco or New York levels of expensive r61.

by Anonymousreply 63May 5, 2020 3:30 AM

R61 thats why I don't live in New York

by Anonymousreply 64May 5, 2020 3:38 AM

You always left NYC for LA to get more space - you could get a little bungalow in WeHo for the price of a 1BR in Manhattan. Now it seems like you get very little more - but need a car. Even if WeHo is walkable - it’s a very small section of the LA life. You still need a car to “live” the LA life.

by Anonymousreply 65May 5, 2020 3:40 AM

R65 all the struggling actors drive for Uber. We're set.

by Anonymousreply 66May 5, 2020 3:41 AM

It sucks...you can't even see a fisting on street corners there right now...all this Covid 19.

by Anonymousreply 67May 5, 2020 3:43 AM

This is what ~$5M gets you in WeHo

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 68May 5, 2020 3:51 AM

Yes sadly $1800 for a studio seems reasonable. FML.
