What would you do?

I rented a house in the OBX for this coming June through VRBO. We cancelled the reservation in March when the pandemic became significant because three of the family members are healthcare/frontline workers, one adult at high risk for complications, and one child at high risk for complications. Since we cancelled, another family member lost their job and then a couple lost their housing. The property manager and cancellation insurance (purchased at the time of booking) are not offering a refund for the deposit.

Outside of making sure to read the small print and completely avoiding OBX again, what do you think I should do?

I would look into legal action. This is an extraordinary circumstance, exacerbated by the fact that some of the guests are in high risk groups. I can't believe VRBO won't refund your deposit.

Bash everyone, everywhere, on every travel site you can find. Also Facebook and Instagram if possible. Copy/Paste. Forward the links to them. You will have your refund back quickly.

Outer Banks, North Carolina

What the point of cancellation insurance if you can’t cancel?

by Anonymousreply 5May 1, 2020 12:40 AM

That makes no sense. Seriously, call a local lawyer and ask. It would be worth it.

the terms of cancellation insurance are harsh; you have to check what they cover and what they don't. we had travel insurance for a trip in late march. covid-related issues were not covered, but quarantine was - only if quarantine was actually "ordered". but we were not ordered into quarantine (as evidenced by a doctor's note). so we called to cancel the travel insurance and got our money back from that. and we're still working through our hotel and airline refunds.

Give us their websites, give us their Facebook and Instagram, we're all bored as fuck and can harass the fuck out of them, they will gladly refund your money when DL is done with them
