Oh! What the hell...I wasn't going to put my two cents into this, but I'm bored.
I agree with what what used to be some conservative positions.
1. I believe in a strong foreign policy that is rooted in Realpolitik, but I disagree with using military force when police action would be the better choice. We had every right to go after Osama bin Laden and his ilk after 9/11. After we got him, we should have quickly left. "Nation-Building" is not a conservative principle. Standing up for democracy is. Iraq was wrong. Obama was right on Iran, but wrong on Syria.
2. Unregulated immigration is a problem that neither party is addressing in any meaningful way. Many of the refugees fleeing Central America have fled problems that America fuels and exasperates. The American consumption of drugs contributes to the problems in El Salvador and elsewhere. Closing borders, demonizing others, and creating concentration camps to warehouse these refugees are not conservative principles. They are close-minded, racist, and illiberal. What is needed here is a Marshall Plan of sorts bring stability back to those regions.
3. People in places like the Rust Belt and Coal-Mining regions need assistance in retraining and reeducation for new job skills. But the jobs that once fueled those regions are not coming back. Those people also need to start a fire under themselves. That is, they need to move away. We can assist you in retraining, but you need to take responsibility for your life. That's a conservative principle.
4. Untrammeled consumerism is not a conservative principle. It has led to gross inequalities in income, the cost of living, and in housing. Regulation is needed to rein that in. Republican once led that in the late nineteenth century.
5. I firmly believe in your right to own a firearm for personal protection or hunting. That does not mean you have a right to every firearm ever produced. You do not need an Ak47 to shoot Bambi or confront a burglar. You do not need to amass an arsenal that rivals that of a small country. Background checks on your criminal past are not violations of your privacy.
6. No one wants to pay taxes. Nonetheless, essential services (law enforcement, public education, fire services, sanitation, parks, and recreation, repair of the infrastructure) can only proceed from that money. Yes, I agree that throwing more money at social services can become wasteful, but see #3 above. We need a medium here.
7. Part of the problems for Democrats around 2016 was that they were viewed as caring more about bathroom rights than about the problems of people trying to make ends meet. I get it. There are times when I think Caitlyn Jenner is just a privileged, navel-gazing person. There are other times when I sympathize with her for her plight. It's at times eye-rolling, when after a signature on an email, I read the preferred pronouns of the signatory. Yet, I call him/her/they by those pronouns. That's called respect for the individual. And he/she/they are just going to the bathroom. I respect their wishes. That's also conservative.
8. I cannot believe I'm wading into this, but here goes: I disagree with abortion, but I believe that the Democratic Party will allow a woman to bring her pregnancy to term, because they will provide support for her and her pregnancy. Their programs will make it less likely that women will choose to end their pregnancies. In other words, those policies are rooted in support from the community...also a one-time conservative principle. Privacy and individual rights play a strong role in a woman's decision. Government has no business in her business.
9. Protection of the natural environment was once a conservative principle.
10. Marriage equality is one of the most conservative ideas ever formulated. Stable, familial relationships are the bedrock of society, and for the maturation and socialization of the individual.
11. Conservatives once firmly believed that the arbitrary abuse of power was wrong, and no one was above the law.
The current GOP is anything but conservative!
