The Michael Jackson of his time produced entertainment aimed at children and was constantly in the company of street boys, some of whom went to live with him.
Want that Horacio HORNblower?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | April 29, 2020 11:42 PM |
This is hardly breaking news, OP--scholars have written about this for several decades.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | April 30, 2020 12:25 AM |
^ That's why I'm comfortable starting a thread about it for the sake of pointless DL bitchery.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | April 30, 2020 1:22 AM |
He always wrote about boys.
Some of the titles are laughable given his predilections:
Tattered Tom
Cash Boy
Ben the Luggage Boy
Rough and Ready
Joel the Neighbor's son

R4, that’s nifty.

Now do Lord Baden Powell!
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 1, 2020 7:00 PM |
There's an award named after him:
Since 1947, the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans has bestowed an annual award on "outstanding individuals in our society who have succeeded in the face of adversity" and scholarships "to encourage young people to pursue their dreams with determination and perseverance".

Kevin Spacey should win the Horatio Alger Award For Hitting On Young Boys
by Anonymous | reply 9 | May 2, 2020 8:39 PM |
I thought that was well known OP.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 2, 2020 9:09 PM |

Just a lifelong bachelor who was too busy writing to go on dates and enjoyed helping young boys. Nothing to see here, folks!
by Anonymous | reply 13 | May 2, 2020 10:20 PM |
^ Exactly.
And if any boys slept with him, it was very charming.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | May 3, 2020 12:29 AM |
Why didn't Michael Jackson win the Horatio Alger Award? He was so devoted to the welfare of young boys.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 3, 2020 1:14 AM |
^ The award is for people from "humble" beginnings who grow up to be rich, not necessarily wealthy patrons of unfortunate youngsters, although it would make more sense given what is known about Alger.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 3, 2020 2:37 PM |
rrrr
by Anonymous | reply 17 | May 3, 2020 5:53 PM |
r2 already said that, r10.

I presumed it was WIDELY known.

I was up for the role of Alger but it went to Lucy.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 4, 2020 1:16 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 4, 2020 1:59 AM |
Someone should do a Horatio Alger biopic. It would be interesting
by Anonymous | reply 23 | May 4, 2020 2:55 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 25 | May 4, 2020 3:03 AM |
I'll play him in the biopic
by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 4, 2020 5:33 PM |
“The stereotype of his stories is that young boys rise up by their bootstraps through hard work and honesty but in every story, the handsome, young boy is discovered by a rich older man who takes him under his wing and through his patronage becomes successful."

What kind of sick freak would be interested in little boys?

So, yes, Kevin Spacey will definitely be playing him in the biopic!

More from the link at r27:
According to “Brewster Revisited” by Bill and Mary Roach, church officials said Alger was accused of engaging in unnamed sex acts with 13-year-old John Clark and 15-year-old Thomas Crocker, which the church said were “too revolting to relate,” but which many scholars have since interpreted to likely mean he was accused of performing oral sex on the teens.
The church documents also suggested that there may have been other boys with whom Alger was involved, but these were the only cases that came before the church’s investigating committee, to which Alger did not confirm or deny the charges but only admitted he had acted “imprudent” -although the cases were never brought before the full parish committee for a hearing that would have included witness testimony.

Biopic will be directed by Bryan Singer

by Anonymous | reply 34 | May 9, 2020 1:45 AM |
I don't know why his books seem to be popular on the exclusive private school curriculum set. I used to read the Yale newspaper editorials (not an alumni, just a wannabe) and for a while it seemed like every 10th student written editorial referenced Horatio Alger, especially when talking about America.
I never learned about this pedo in my school, and I am glad not to have. I wonder if the academic set still plays Michael Jackson music or encourages the reading of material written by a pedophile. Would they argue the ad hominem argument- that material is fine, no matter where it came from? Would they have him cancelled?
Anyway, they don't use Nazi research on humane grounds so I wouldn't want to use the works of a pedophile either.

So was Harvey Milk, OP.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | May 9, 2020 1:55 AM |

Ronald Dahl hated Jews. We must no longer watch or read Willy Wanka!
by Anonymous | reply 38 | May 9, 2020 1:58 AM |
My German friend's mother is a scientist in Germany and said they still reference the research notes of experiments that Nazi's did on humans during the holocaust.
Plus, American med students textbooks reference these experiments and notes, but the med students and universities don't realize that they are reading Nazi research!

by Anonymous | reply 42 | May 9, 2020 2:16 AM |
Kinsey used children for his sex research as well as pedophiles. Does that mean we ditch all the research the Kinsey Institute did? I swear, some people are just Pollyannas and need to grow the fuck up. Even some of our most used fonts were invented by pedophiles.
You have to separate art from the person. Life isn't pretty. Human beings are horrible creatures.

R43 That's why science studies aren't 💯. It's a well know research phenomenon.

13-15 year old young men have gone through puberty and are fully grow down there . So he was not a pedophile some of you have a lot to learn.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | May 9, 2020 7:01 AM |
I listened to Thrilla the other day. It's so nostalgic. His music was heavily produced by Quincy Jones. I will listen to celebrate Q's work. Michael was a loveable little child himself but grew up to be crazy.

I loved reading his books while lunching on a footlong.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | May 9, 2020 12:59 PM |
I think I'd be embarrassed to receive a Horatio Alger award, and be associated with child sex abuse victims.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | May 9, 2020 9:51 PM |
I don't think those teenagers were victims, at least not how we currently define the term...
by Anonymous | reply 54 | May 9, 2020 10:01 PM |
r54, based on what? Your fantasies?
by Anonymous | reply 55 | May 9, 2020 10:04 PM |
Well, at a time when the marriage age was 14, or even younger in some places, I don't think today's rigid standards/thinking/laws necessarily apply to the norms of the 19th century
by Anonymous | reply 56 | May 9, 2020 10:13 PM |
Per wikipedia (discussing Great Britain)
At common law and by canon law a person who had attained the legal age of puberty could contract a valid marriage. A marriage contracted by persons either of whom was under the legal age of puberty was voidable.
The legal age of puberty was fourteen years for males and twelve years for females.

Pedophilia apologist at r57 citing marriage laws from over 100 years ago. If you want to use that logic, let's also remember anti-homo and sodomy laws, which surely would've applied to Alger.

by Anonymous | reply 62 | May 10, 2020 4:31 PM |
The world just isn't sophisticated enough to accept the beauty of man-boy love. Laws against pedophilia and child marriage are ignorant. In Neverland we are safe from the evil world that wants to ban our LOVE.

Wasn't this a time where children were sold on the street by their parents?
by Anonymous | reply 64 | May 11, 2020 4:43 PM |
"a time when..."
No it wasn't, unless someone was poor and desperate. Otherwise it was not considered a socially or culturally, let alone moral, practice 200 years ago nor thousands of years ago.
Still today in 2020, desperately poor people sell their children to pedos. One place this happens a lot is Cambodia, not the world's richest country. Guess who the buyers are: pedos from Europe and the U.S.
