Please Tell Us Why You Won't Wear A Mask

So this is an anonymous board, be honest and please tell us why you will NOT be wearing a face mask when outside your house

by Anonymousreply 154April 30, 2020 7:24 PM

I'm doing my OWN thing in my OWN time, daddy!

by Anonymousreply 1April 28, 2020 11:03 PM

It smears my lipstick.

by Anonymousreply 2April 28, 2020 11:06 PM

This is not an anonymous board, dear. People may have concerns Gov. Whitmer may track down and jail them.

by Anonymousreply 3April 28, 2020 11:07 PM

I'm a degenerate who deserves to die gasping for a ventilator, weeping at my hubris!!!

by Anonymousreply 4April 28, 2020 11:09 PM

I’m afraid of the ridicule.

by Anonymousreply 6April 28, 2020 11:15 PM

Sure, I suppose I shouldn’t be wearing one either.

by Anonymousreply 7April 28, 2020 11:19 PM

Masc for masc! UB2. No pic no chat!

by Anonymousreply 8April 28, 2020 11:20 PM

The type of masks the general public will be wearing only prevents droplet spray: sneezing, coughing. You don't need it in your backyard or in a park or something. You need it for stores and workplaces.

by Anonymousreply 9April 28, 2020 11:28 PM

If you don't (and you're not homeless, mentally ill, or have trouble breathing) wear one when in public places - outdoors/indoors except on or in your own property - starting tomorrow you can be fined $300 per the Cambridge City Council's vote last night.

The joggers ruined it for everyone.

by Anonymousreply 11April 28, 2020 11:55 PM

I'll wear one. Not because I think it's especially useful, but out of respect for other people.

by Anonymousreply 12April 28, 2020 11:56 PM

[quote]They don't do any good. It's a feel good thing.

That's what I told my parents... "Remember when you had to hide under your desk in school for nuclear fallout drills?"

Nonetheless, I'll wear one for the same reason. I don't want to be responsible for anyone else getting frightened.

by Anonymousreply 13April 28, 2020 11:58 PM

I’ve already explained this a hundred times!

by Anonymousreply 14April 28, 2020 11:58 PM

I want to be able to look people in the eye.

by Anonymousreply 15April 28, 2020 11:59 PM

The basic masks don't do a thing. I check my temperature a few times every day, and work from home, so I am never in public. I would wear the n95 mask to prevent being infected whenever I go out, but I simply can't find any. If they were available, I would wear them. The plain masks that are available? They won't help.

by Anonymousreply 16April 29, 2020 12:02 AM

R9 is correct.

by Anonymousreply 17April 29, 2020 12:09 AM

R9 is right. The purpose of the ordinary masks that most people are wearing is to protect others from you, not to protect you from them. You don't need to wear one if you're in a place where you can be sure of the ability to distance yourself from others (and do so), even it's theoretically a public place. You certainly don't need one in your car by yourself.

Walking alone or with another member of your household through your quiet suburban neighborhood - no mask needed. Walking in a crowded public park with people everywhere - mask needed.

This is considered too complex a concept for the masses to understand, so they make blanket rules that just piss people off and inspire defiance.

BUT R16, you should wear a mask when you're around other people because, notwithstanding all your amateur diagnostics, you could still be infected and spread the virus to others. This is a public health measure to protect the public and prevent the spread of the virus. It has nothing to do with protecting you, individually. You should do it because it's the right thing to do, but if you don't the government is completely justified in forcing you to do so or fining you.

by Anonymousreply 18April 29, 2020 12:11 AM

Well Trump finally put on an appropriate mask.

by Anonymousreply 19April 29, 2020 12:13 AM

"Stanford economic policy research experts state that “the firm recommendation against masks in community settings appears incompatible with the available evidence”. Modeling by Yale researchers estimates that “the benefits of each additional cloth mask worn by the public are conservatively in the $3,000-$6,000 range due to their impact in slowing the spread of the virus”. A cloth mask is basically free, since you can make one from old T-shirts or sheets. So the economic payoff is hard to question. What other investment pays off by over 1,000 to 1?

One huge challenge is that mask wearing only really pays off when most people do it. A Food and Drug Administration analysis of the flu estimates that if 50% of the population uses a mask, virus transmission is reduced by half. If 80% of the population uses a mask, the virus is “essentially eliminated”.

I wanna show my pearly white teeth and my stunning red lipstick.

But I've heard that masks are good for fat hoes though as they will pretty much stop fatties from shoving food down their obstructed throats.

by Anonymousreply 21April 29, 2020 12:18 AM

My breath is ATROCIOUS behind the mask.

by Anonymousreply 22April 29, 2020 12:21 AM

The danger is of being in a place with a high viral load. Prisons, nursing homes, schools full of untested kids, submarines, subway cars/trains, planes...

Again: every year, between 30,000 and 50,000 people die of a flu in the U.S. Mostly the elderly and unwell.

The only good thing about this is Trump will not be re-elected. He had one challenge and he failed it. He didn't create the good (Obama) economy and he can't fix it. All the Democrats have to do is run his nutty comments on a loop and he will look like the charlatan he is.

by Anonymousreply 23April 29, 2020 12:33 AM

I have antibodies because I've already had the virus! Well, I don't [italic]know[/italic] know that I had it, because they won't test me, but I'm sure I had it back in January, because I was real sick and couldn't taste nothing, so yeah, it was that, and I now have antibodies protecting me!

by Anonymousreply 26April 29, 2020 12:46 AM

I am jogging and need to breathe!!!!🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️

by Anonymousreply 27April 29, 2020 12:51 AM

Because I am in a semi-rural area where at most I encounter one or two other people when I am out walking the dogs and we cross the road and stay about 50 feet from each other.

But I'd 100% wear one if I went to a store or other public place or if I lived in a city where people were all around.

by Anonymousreply 28April 29, 2020 12:54 AM

It makes me feel short of breath. I guess my respiratory process is already spazzed in some way.

by Anonymousreply 29April 29, 2020 12:58 AM

The CDC recommendation is to wear masks in settings where social distancing of 6 feet is difficult or impractical. Wear I live, I can easily get 6 or more feet between me and other walkers during my morning walks. So no mask, and I make the move to distance. Grocery stores, pharmacies, takeout...mask is on. All compliant with CDC guidelines.

by Anonymousreply 30April 29, 2020 12:58 AM

I wore a mask and look what happened to me!

by Anonymousreply 31April 29, 2020 12:59 AM

I'll be honest. I don't know where to get one. I know one or two places around here; one is price gouging; the other is a homemade outfit that has a two-week turnaround time. I've been stupidly exposed thus far, and have ordered food and gone shopping in stores several times and haven't caught it. So, maybe I won't catch it. I try not to touch anything with my fingers. (This is easy for me, as I've always been a germ freak.) Also, when I go in the store lately, 90 percent of other people there are already wearing a mask, so perhaps it's safe. (I know this is a bit selfish.) I have dickie turtleneck neck warmer thing, that's designed to be pulled up over the mouth and nose for warmth in cold weather. I tried wearing it in the store, and I felt hot...and my breath stinks.

I think it is disgraceful that the government has not stepped in to require companies to make more n95 masks. There seems to be no effort whatsoever on increasing the supply. I can not believe how much Trump has botched this, but, then again, I can. My only hope is he gets infected and dies.

by Anonymousreply 36April 29, 2020 1:12 AM

This virus is extremely contagious. Don't listen to fucking "experts" who say it's impossible to get it whatever way...they don't know shit.

Yes, you could be outdoors and someone could cough and you could get it. I've been coughed on so many times prior to this virus, when sidewalks were packed etc, they cough as they walk past you, you don't even have time to avoid it etc.

Because it’s hot and uncomfortable and fucking POINTLESS unless I am going to be in a stagnant area forced with people for a length of time someone might cough or sneeze.

Riding a bus and people are on board? Fine, I’ll pop on a mask just to be polite.

Walking around the neighborhood? Get fucked, Karen.

Grocery store? Eh, I’ll wear one to avoid women nagging.

by Anonymousreply 43April 29, 2020 1:50 AM

The virus may have peaked in my area, but as of YESTERDAY the local authorities made masks mandatory for whenever anyone goes outside.

Odd timing, but maybe because the restrictions have successfully kept death and infection rates low, people around here are starting to act like the virus is no big deal.

by Anonymousreply 47April 29, 2020 2:20 AM

Cloth masks protect you from droplets which have a high virus load. N95 only offer a slight advantage over cloth masks. Those not wearing masks r blue collar types who have no one smart in their circle. Trump should be wearing a mask.

Goes back to the first years after I "came out." At Halloween, my friends warned me that you don't want to cover up your face for a couple of different reasons, particularly if your face is the only thing you've got going for you.

Years later, my face is not such a selling point. So, instead of wearing a mask, I tape my wallet over my nose.

by Anonymousreply 50April 29, 2020 2:27 AM

3. I only go out to the grocery store once a week at off peak times.

I can't breathe wearing a mask. Therefore, I only wear one to gain entry to places that require them. Once I'm outside, I remove the mask.

by Anonymousreply 57April 29, 2020 3:09 AM

I do wear it in public places if people are nearby. On a city block when no one else is on it, I pull it down and let my nose breathe.

by Anonymousreply 58April 29, 2020 3:12 AM

Not sure why this is so fucking hard. How long have we known that you can be HIV positive for years and not know it and still infect others—so you get tested and practice safe sex.

Since we can’t get readily tested right now for the Coronavirus, you wear a mask like you would wear a condom during sex—to prevent the transmission of the virus from someone who has it to someone who doesn’t.

However, in the US we’ve fetishized personal freedom to the point of absolute stupidity. In the case of HIV we have “bug chasers” who seek to intentionally infect themselves—or people who are HIV+ but say it is just a hoax and don’t take meds or seek treatment until they are chronically ill or dying..

There will always be people too stupid and selfish to do anything to take care of themselves or others. All we can do is stay away from them and hope their untimely death isn’t a painful one.

I wear one when I go to the drugstore, but it fogs up my glasses. And I feel like I am way too hot. Don't like the masks and feel so sorry for health workers who have to wear them plus other things like goggles on top part of face.

by Anonymousreply 69April 29, 2020 9:36 AM

I'm a fucking sociopath who doesn't care about other people! (Or is it psychopath-- the perennial DL discussion. )

by Anonymousreply 70April 29, 2020 9:56 AM

I wear a dust mask when doing yard work because it helps with allergies, and I wonder if neighbors think I'm wearing it because of the virus.

I almost never leave the house but when I do I wear one, because what I had in February may very well have been CV19, plus my partner has an essential job and is at work with hundreds of others all day, and there's no use accidentally spraying someone with the virus if I'm a carrier.

by Anonymousreply 71April 29, 2020 10:01 AM

I have been an essential worker throughout this whole ordeal. The job just started issuing masks, and employee temperature screening mid April. The 'hoax' began in February, so just a little late in the game? Plus, essential workers haven't been tested, as some could of been asymptomatic. Until essential workers can get universally tested, the public has no way of knowing what exposure is out there as they shop, so masks must be mandatory. If 50% of the people wear a mask, infection is reduced by 50%. If 80% wear a mask, the infection could be eradicated. I purchased the attached masking system, as the heat beneath the mask is almost unbearable and I am hoping it cools me down. I'll be walking around looking like an astronaut. I'll let you know how it goes. They do not accept returns, as your could be returning infected units so buyer beware! But there are many color choices to make a DL swoon.

R69 Right before you put the mask on, wash your glasses with soap and water and dry with a soft cloth. Something about the soap keeps the fogging down.

by Anonymousreply 73April 29, 2020 10:36 AM

I won't wear a mask because I believe that our personal health choices should not be influenced by political views.

However, I have not objected when fellow performers have chosen to wear masks; that's their choice. My choice is NOT to wear a mask.

Soap Opera Digest readers should know wearing a mask is no longer entirely voluntary. Those who began by requiring masks for performers now resort to extreme tactics in pursuit of their express goal of 100 percent conformity.

Offering masks to celebrities was, in my view, a benign and healthy action. On the other hand, aggressively badgering healthy actresses to wear masks is not only demeaning to artists, but an offense against my personal freedoms.

First, it misguidedly politicizes human tragedy. A prime example was Kathy Griffin, who complained about inadequate COVID treatment, while her actions selfishly denied COVID victims of healthcare.

Second, any attempt to force conformity to a single social agenda attacks the freedom of expression. The extreme activities that resort to harassment to compel actors and actresses to wear these masks are practicing a '90s brand of McCarthyism and their behavior is deplorable. Our community was devastated by political extremists in the 1950s and again became a target during the last presidential campaign. It surpasses belief that men and women in the entertainment field would resort to shameful practices that the enemies of artistic freedom have used against us.

Sadly, it falls to some of us who ardently support COVID victims and COVID research to resist these tactics by personal example. Believe me, the easy way out would be to self-isolate and keep silent. But I won't, because I don't want these appalling tactics to succeed.

Its a no brainer. As long as you don’t assume you’re invincible because you are wearing one and follow all other recommended cautionary guidelines, why not wear a mask ? It may help and how can it harm ?

As for fuckers who whine about their freedoms and being told what to do, just stop, take a moment and think about all the other impingements on your precious freedoms that you do daily. Seat belt ? Speed limit ? Helmets ? Overdraft ? Credit card ? Loan ? You are being datamined by the minute, used for revenue, tracked. Your freedoms are mostly placebos. Get over yourselves.

I knew people who thought AIDS was a hoax (or didn’t want it to limit their sexual freedom) and ended up dying of it in the 80s/90s Illness and death limits everything, including sexual freedom.

I also know people who got careless with safe sex and are HIV positive and wished they’d been more careful so they could be taking PREP today instead of HIV meds that are hard on their organs and have side effects.

I never had sex without a condom even when I knew I was negative, just in the off chance I might have been recently infected. I didn’t want to be responsible for having given someone HIV.

Make good choices, folks. Some dumb ones are fatal.

by Anonymousreply 95April 29, 2020 2:06 PM

I minimize touching my mask because each time you touch your mask, you're increasing the odds of contamination. And if you get it on your hands, you could touch your mouth/eyes/nose and contaminate other things. Of course, if I have to adjust it when I'm out, I do it, but sanitize before and after. I hate seeing on tv when people take their masks off to speak--that's exactly when you should have your mask on.

I have one proper cloth mask, made by a friend. I rotate it with things I already have on hand--handkerchiefs, bandanas, balaclava, buffs and old cycling jersey I cut up. The handkerchiefs are the most comfortable but likely because they are thin and offer the least protection.

I’ve been wearing a mask when doing my once a week grocery / pharmacy run (my cat has cancer, hence the multiple pharmacy trips - I refilled my one prescription in early March and got enough for three months).

It’s hot, it’s uncomfortable, and I maintain social distancing anyways. Covid-19 diagnoses in my state are now decreasing. I’m going to Home Depot this afternoon and I’m not planning on wearing a mask. I’m just going to take a bunch of vitamin C and think positive thoughts.

by Anonymousreply 100April 29, 2020 3:56 PM

R100, in my state (NY) you need a mask to enter home depot. They have a big sign posted on the door.

Remember if you are wearing anything but an n95 (or equivalent) you're only kidding yourself.

The virus goes through cloth and other kinds of masks, to the regulation to wear one is just something to make the public "feel good."

Not just Home Depot. I've seen the sign requiring face coverings at Duane Reade (Walgreen's), CVS, and the supermarket

[quote]The plain masks that are available? They won't help.

That's why you add filters. Some do a better job than others and do indeed help. This project had a bunch tested with actual COVID19 particles and are working on testing the next batch of materials, incluing nylon and rayon. Nothing is 100%, but it's disingenuous to claim they do nothing at all.

[quote]Cloth masks protect you from droplets which have a high virus load. N95 only offer a slight advantage over cloth masks.

The 95 in N95 means at least 95% of particulate is trapped or blocked from entering the mask. Cloth masks with filters, although definitely helpful, do not offer anything near that. The highest rated filter so far in testing was 60% (2 layers of Tool Box blue shop towels- I use 4 for hopefully better results).

[quote]I bought a mask off Etsy. It's a flimsy little piece of fabric that is loose when I wear it.

Get a better one with adjustable elastic, or that ties behind your head and neck. Some have flannel or fiberfill as a backing, making them less flimsy.

[quote]masks only protect others from my germs. It doesn't protect me

So you can't be bothered to protect others? They are, after all, wearing theirs to protect you. If everyone wears them (especially with filters), then there is very little particulate in the air for you to inhale, and vice versa.

R121 homemade masks filter out the droplets which have the high virus load. So, homemade makes you about 95 percent safe while n95 make you 98 percent safe. The small stuff that n95 filters needs to be in high concentration to be a threat so only medical people need n95.

by Anonymousreply 124April 30, 2020 2:04 AM

I don’t feel like it. I’ll stay away from people and they can stay away from me too

by Anonymousreply 125April 30, 2020 2:05 AM

R124, please see link at r119, which shows actual results, not speculation. Of course cloth can stop some droplet transmission, but I could feel moisture from my breath through one of my thinner ones, so it is not 100%. Breath vapor is another way to potentially spread this virus.

If you have links to actual testing with the COVID19 virus that disputes mine, please post it. I'd like to see the results. A guy in the UK ran some promising ones, but later admitted he did not actually test with any actual viral particles.

The point of the mask is to protect those around you, not so much protect yourself. If you are asymptomatic, wearing a mask prevents you from infecting others. Not wearing a mask means you don’t give a flying fuck about anyone but yourself.

I get out of the house at first light and walk, I'm not wearing a mask. I also choose to walk in the street at that hour as there is barely any traffic. If I do see someone they usually are on the sidewalk and we have a car between us because I'm walking in the street.

In tricky spots to be in the street, I'm on the sidewalk and if I see someone coming toward me I will step into the street between cars as far away from the curb as I can get.

All of us out walking are being really aware from what I have observed. We all make sure to keep our distance. I'd also say that early in the morning about half are wearing masks and half are not.

[quote]i'm sure your hermes scarf is MUCH more refined, bunky. but all masks are better than none

I wear cloth masks with 4 layers of blue shop towels as a filter, "Bunky." Nowhere in my statement did I criticize masks. I merely stated the obvious- they aren't all the same, so we can't claim they all are as good as N95s.

by Anonymousreply 133April 30, 2020 2:20 AM

I do wear one when I go outside, but I find it very hard on my breathing after about 10 minutes. So I can sorta understand why some people don’t like to wear it.

by Anonymousreply 134April 30, 2020 2:25 AM

I have an N95 mask that I wear when I go into stores 133. I have found that breathing through that mask for an extended period of time aggravates my sinuses and my throat.

I purposely walk early because the streets are basically empty and that way I don't have to breath through cloth. I make sure I'm getting back home about the time the majority of people will be out walking.

I live in a very rural area that has had zero cases. The people who live here don't understand why they should be bound by the same rules and regulations that apply to NYC and other densely populated areas. They don't understand why the few restaurants we have are closed when nobody within 90 miles is sick. Different rules need to apply to different parts of the country.

by Anonymousreply 138April 30, 2020 12:14 PM

Here’s an analogy for you golden shower aficionados:

If a guy pisses on you and you have no pants on, you’re gonna get wet. If you have pants on, you’ll still get wet, but not directly.

If he and you both have pants on, he’s only going to piss on himself.

R140 The same people who always meltdown and panic about major world events (journalists, suburbanites, etc) are having a nervous breakdown in public about Covid-19.

It's their own fault everyone is ignoring them, if they'd cut the bullshit and be real with the general public there'd be a lot more compliance with mask-wearing.

But the truth is a let down. Corona is bad, but not that bad, and any area outside the NYC metro can operate normally but with masks and extra handwashing.

I don't see anyone talking about using glasses and gloves with the masks. In public places, like wal-mart, I believe they are just as important. Of course not when driving around or taking a walk, etc.

by Anonymousreply 146April 30, 2020 4:49 PM

Because gloves don’t do shit unless you change them frequently.

It seems too many people are relying on gloves and saying “well, I’m wearing gloves!” I saw a guy at the gas station the other day wearing surgical gloves while he pumped gas. That’s a good thing. When he was done though, where did he go? Right back into his car and took them off in the car. Gloves are one time use. He should’ve taken them off at the pump and threw them away.

by Anonymousreply 147April 30, 2020 5:32 PM

^true. I haven't pumped gas in weeks because my dad does most of that now but I recall them having paper towels at the pump stations. it might be awkward and cumbersome but imagine much easier to dispose, if that is a safe option.

[bold]THE DL IS ALL SET[/bold]

A new study from researchers at the University of Chicago says that a combination of cotton with [bold]silk, chiffon, or flannel[/bold] can create a filter whose performance nears that of the much-talked-about N95.

[bold]Making your own mask? Researchers say some fabrics can filter nearly as well as an N95[/bold]

By Matt Berg, Globe Correspondent, Updated April 30, 2020

"MacGyver would be proud.

Fabric from a cotton sheet combined with material from a prom dress, an old tie, or a pair of pajamas could allow people to make a mask with a filter that’s nearly as good as the N95 mask, according to new research. A new study from researchers at the University of Chicago says that a combination of cotton with silk, chiffon, or flannel can create a filter whose performance nears that of the much-talked-about N95. The researchers and other experts said there’s a big caveat, though. If your mask allows a bunch of leakage around the edges, unlike the tightly fitted N95, your homemade filter will lose its effectiveness.

“We found that many common fabrics can be surprisingly good at filtering particles,” said Supratik Guha, a University of Chicago professor and author of the study, which was published Friday in the journal Nano. Tighter-woven cotton alone was found to be effective, particularly two layers of 600 thread-per-inch cotton. So was a cotton quilt made of two 120 thread-per-inch cotton sheets, with a 0.5-centimeter batting of cotton, polyester and other fibers. Four layers of silk — imagine someone really bundled up in a scarf — also performed well. But the best overall filtration was provided by a sandwich of one layer of the tighter-woven cotton sheet plus two layers of silk, or two layers of chiffon, or one layer of flannel — because of the electrostatic filter created by the non-cotton layers.

“We speculate that the enhanced performance of the hybrids is likely due to the combined effect of mechanical and electrostatic-based filtration,” the study said. “Combining layers to form hybrid masks ... may be an effective approach."

“The benefit of having an electrostatic layer is that it can trap liquid droplets and other particles based on charge rather than the pore size,” said Jill Crittenden, a research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and member of N95 Decon, a group of scientists who review and publish information about N95 mask decontamination.

The big problem is around the edges. “The bad thing about using masks that have really high filtration is that, if there are any gaps in the mask, the air is just going to go through those gaps than through the filter,” Crittenden said. "It’s important to have a mask that has high breathability and high airflow, and that’s not typical of cloth masks.” Mask makers must ensure that a mask is fitted properly, or risk severely affecting the mask’s efficacy, the UChicago researchers said. In some cases, gaps decreased mask efficacy up to 60 percent. “You could have the best fabric material around, but if you’re not planning to minimize those gaps, the effectiveness really drops,” Guha said. “That’s something cloth mask makers need to keep in mind.” That comes as no surprise to many a homemade mask-wearer whose glasses have fogged up because of leakage when they breathe.

In the weeks since the pandemic unfolded, many people have been scrambling for ways to craft masks at home. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended wearing masks in public but officials have discouraged people from buying N95 masks needed by health care workers and first responders. The Boston Globe posted a video on Instagram on how to make a facial covering using just two hair ties and a piece of cloth. The Washington Post and New York Times are also among the many outlets that have posted articles and videos detailing the mask-making process."

by Anonymousreply 149April 30, 2020 5:54 PM

Because we don't have enough masks here in Norway. There isn't a mask order anyway like it is in the US.
