Norman Greenbaum on ‘Spirit in the Sky’ at 50: ‘The Interest in It Just Doesn’t Wane’

The singer-songwriter on the inspiration behind his immortal fuzz-rock anthem, and why it was so hard to follow up

In the 50 years since its release, “Spirit in the Sky” has never really gone away. The song has appeared in more than 30 commercials and 60 films, including Wayne’s World 2, Apollo 13, Remember the Titans, and I, Tonya.

Good interview. Listen to the original version...and recent band version on tour:

Damn, I remember Spirit in the Sky, 1970. It was a very addicting tune once it got into your head. It was a monster hit.

It's played frequently at funerals.

I love this song! Just watched Apollo 13 again; its placement was perfect.
