In my humble opinion, the greatest band of its time.
I’m listening to Talking Heads

They were good.
A Blondie song came on tv just a minute ago & I realized how very good they were. They new sounds they introduced; their songs were expertly produced & Debbie Harry was a beautiful woman with the exact voice to bring those songs to life.
Man, we have passed our peak.

"Speaking In Tongues" is one of the most underrated albums in all of popular music.

R9: I agree, I want this song played on my deathbed. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous.

A most excellent band (I've seen them three times in different cities and decades!), and David Byrne's continued innovations and support of other artists is admirable. His music playlists are quite enjoyable.

If you haven't seen it already, watch the "Stop Making Sense" concert film. In my opinion, it's the bet concert film ever made.

I'm surprised that no one has written a comprehensive biography of the band. They definitely had an interesting beginning, end, and career. Perhaps because Byrne is so alienated from the other members, there is a fear of lawsuits if bad blood is spilled? The closest I have found to a biography of them is what was written in Seymour Stein's book -- well worth reading -- which does not portray Byrne as terribly likable.

Actually, R18, a friend of mine just got a large contract to write a bio of the band. It'll be out in about 2-3 years. He's a great writer with two well-received music bios in his resume.

David was fantastic on SNL about two months ago.

Is the peanut butter supply chain broken yet?

Just love the film True Stories David Byrne did. Haven’t seen it in years but it’s genius.

R20 That was an amazing performance... his music seeming immediately relevant, important. I looked for a clip of it to post here... but I couldn't find one - behind firewalls.
Same as it ever was...

I'm also a big fan of his score for Twyla Tharp's 'The Catherine Wheel.' Saw it at Brooklyn Academy of Music and later on Broadway.

R19. That is fantastic news. I actually went looking for a bio on Talking Heads, which led me to the Seymour Stein book. I read a fair number of music and band bios. Might I know which ones your friend wrote? There is a good chance I've read them! I wish him the best of luck.

Tina Weymouth said “The man is incapable of friendship.”
by Anonymous | reply 28 | April 29, 2020 1:11 AM |
Well, Byrne's an Aspie, so there's that.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | April 29, 2020 1:50 AM |
He may be less than a good friend to Tina... but he's a real artist . (Picasso was an asshole, right?)
This is a really interesting book.

R28, I just finished Neil Strauss' book "Everyone Loves You When You're Dead." a series of interview outtakes he has conducted over the years. It is a pretty great book. He has a few interviews with Neil Young, who, unexpectedly, is cranky and cantankerous, and, essentially says that if it isn't about his art, he says no. He does not engage with the world or with people. Perhaps that kind of attitude is what allows artists like Young or Byrne to remain relevant? I'm not forgiving them for their behavior, but it could be helpful to keep blinders on and remaining selfish when trying to create. I have been around enough successful musicians and writers to know that they are a different breed. I don't like to generalize, but they tend to be deeply narcissistic, selfish, and have some sort of damage that makes them seek adulation from the masses. I have no doubt it is not possible to be friends with someone like David Byrne, nor would I want to be.

David Byrne's lyrics were amazingly subtle and you had to tease the meanings out of them. You may be right, OP.
Divide and dissolve.
