by Anonymousreply 8April 28, 2020 3:50 AM

OP, who is your grandmother?

by Anonymousreply 9April 28, 2020 3:50 AM

I was hiking friends with a man who used to cut Gore Vidal's hair during his last years in Hollywood.

I'm very close friends with someone who in the early 2000s used to work at a Denny's in Diamond Bar and take massive take-out orders for Snoop Dogg.

by Anonymousreply 10April 28, 2020 3:51 AM

For a decade I was in a relationship with the husband of an academy award nominated actress who in turn....

by Anonymousreply 11April 28, 2020 3:56 AM

I fucked a famous television designer in his ass one summer off the coast of the Atlantic.

by Anonymousreply 12April 28, 2020 3:56 AM

by Anonymousreply 13April 28, 2020 3:57 AM

by Anonymousreply 14April 28, 2020 4:01 AM

r6, is he family? He pings and is cute.

by Anonymousreply 15April 28, 2020 4:03 AM

He did cry R12. But it didn't hurt me. He cried a lot that summer. In the water, on hot sand, on the dirty kitchen floor. In a canoe. Some dirty street. I'm big. It hurts. Why wait? But sometimes in the heavy cool sheets I let him weep into a pillow. I fucked him off the coast of the Atlantic all summer in his ass that year.

by Anonymousreply 16April 28, 2020 4:08 AM

R15, as far as my partner (who is right next to me) knew, nothing to indicate as such. But my partner was also undergoing his own coming out/sexual orientation issues at the time, so he wasn't the best judge. He said Kal was an extremely nice guy though.

by Anonymousreply 17April 28, 2020 4:09 AM

My sister dated basketball star Lew Alcindor, while atrending UCLA in the late 1960s. He now uses the name Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

My other sister programmed the phone system in Frank Sinatra's house in Palm Springs. Frank wasn't there, but his wife Barbara was and my sister said she was very nice to her. Also, a coworker of my sister in the same office caused a car crash which resulted in the death of Jilly Rizzo, a close friend of Frank Sinatra.

I attended the outdoor graduation ceremony at Pepperdine (Malibu campus) in June 1984 as my friend was graduating. Before it started, I had a pleasant chat with the elegant lady sitting next to me on the concrete benches. The emcee of the ceremony introduced notable people in attendance, and introduced Mrs. Charlton Heston, and the lady I chatted with stood up and waved. Up to that moment I had no idea who she was. She was Lydia Clarke, a photographer and actress in her own right, who was married to Heston for 64 years.

My grandparents were members of the National Geographic Society in Washington, DC and went to all their monthly luncheons, which always featured a guest speaker. One time my grandfather was ill so my grandmother took my Dad in his place. This was about 1934, I think, as my Dad was about 14. The guest speaker was Amelia Earhart. After the luncheon my Dad and my grandmother were waljing through the hallways, and came upon Eleanor Roosevelt and Amelia Earhart. My grandmother introduced my Dad to them, and the 4 of them had a conversation. My Dad described this to me many years later as one of his best memories.

Years later my Dad worked at the Orange County Road Department and his coworker was Rex Heflin, who took the famous UFO photos in August 1965. Those photos were in our house for one night.

My stepmother, my Dad's second wife, planted the rose bushes at the Nixon Library in Yorba Linda, California and met Richard Nixon a couple of times.

I spoke on the phone at length with Dolly Parton's brother one time - I don't remember which brother, but the one that owns a fireworks store in Tennessee.

by Anonymousreply 18April 28, 2020 4:19 AM

Weird. Amelia Earhart once asked my grandfather for directions.

I saw Ben Stiller at the Bergamot galleries in Santa Monica. This was in a gallery filled with Annette Bening's collection of clown art. He was very gracious to some teenagers who asked for his autograph. Very short guy, but friendly.

Only New Englanders of a certain age might recognize this. There used to be a regional brand of canned clam chowder called Captain Snow’s. There was a picture of the Captain with his big white bushy beard on the can. They may still produce it. My father and the real Captain Snow, who was a local celebrity, were colleagues of some sort. I must have been about eight when I goT to go on a special ride in the Captain’s boat out to a lighthouse on a tiny island out in the middle of Boston Harbor. I remember being terrified because you had to climb a slimy, slippery algae covered iron ladder bolted into a cliff. It was just me, my dad and the captain. Scared but I was totally thrilled at the same time.

I went to elementary school with Totie Fields’ daughter Debbie.

My mother used to work for Neil Diamond’s brother Harvey.

by Anonymousreply 33April 28, 2020 4:55 AM

I knew Chef Boyardee. His actual name was Ettore Boiardi, and he looked just like the guy on the can. I went to graduate school at Case in Cleveland, and he and his wife Helen owned a restaurant near campus and would go for a walk every afternoon...everybody knew them, and would yell "Hi Chef" I was taking Italian, so I'd always say something to them, and they'd respond and we got to be friends. They had me over to their home for dinner several times...thankfully no Spaghetti-Os.

by Anonymousreply 34April 28, 2020 4:57 AM

Ok, I have a few.

I fucked Nureyev.

I worked a private party for Cher. 12 year old Chastity and I danced.

I served Lauren Bacall (she was wonderful by the way - a long night at Orsos) Also Ann-Margret and Paul Anka. I served Bette Midler at a private Dom P party at club called Heaven. She was nowhere near as friendly as Bacall or Cher.

I fucked Rex Harrington and had a two year climb in his window affair with him. He was a very sweet and pretty man with an ASS that could do Tricks!!

Leslie Nielsen took me and my friend out for coffee in Vancouver. He wanted to know where to go boating and where best to hide on weekends. He just started talking to me in a convenience store. He was kind of handsome in a saggy way.

I met Mahershala Ali on the subway and I cruised him till he let go. So sexy and handsome.

Bryan Adams and Pam Anderson and my boyfriend and I got very drunk one night at a party in BC. Bryan is weird and arch and prissy but Pam is a fucking doll. I think she has aspergers though. She can't make direct eye contact but she manages to be very warm. There's nothing slutty about her at all. Except her dress. Beautiful person.

Judith Light told me I was handsome and Betty Buckley spit on the street in front of me because I wasn't after her autograph.

There's lots more.

P.S. I was very young when I fucked Rudolph Nureyev and I guess he was quite old. But I was part of the ballet world then. He was a bucking bronco bottom. Fantastic fuck. Wild animal.

I kissed Martha Plimpton for a few minutes. Passionately. She's pretty sexy.

by Anonymousreply 38April 28, 2020 5:10 AM

Thanks, R35, for your post. It’s the best I’ve seen on DL in a long time.

by Anonymousreply 39April 28, 2020 5:10 AM

Robert De Niro flirted with my cleavage-bearing sister when she wanted an autograph during the filming of "The Fan."

An old friend's sugar daddy lived next door to Sheryl Crow.

I have quite a few more detailed ones but feel like that's treading too close to people who might read here... -- if you grew up in LA, you likely have or you know people who just have random incidents like this.

by Anonymousreply 40April 28, 2020 5:16 AM

I fucked a thousand Z-list white boys.

by Anonymousreply 41April 28, 2020 5:20 AM

R38, from what I can remember, yes (I only met him once when I was 10. He lived in Australia and I was in the U.S. and this was back in the 1980s when travel wasn't as common as it is today).

However, both my grandmother and his second wife both looked like drag queens to me and I always found that interesting.

by Anonymousreply 42April 28, 2020 5:22 AM

"I fucked Rex Harrington and had a two year climb in his window affair with him. He was a very sweet and pretty man with an ASS that could do Tricks!!"

Madame Chiang Kai-shek rode in an elevator with my mother when she was a girl and Madame Chiang grabbed and yanked on Mom's braids.

by Anonymousreply 48April 28, 2020 6:04 AM

Bob Crane (Hogan"s Heroes star and huge perv) flirted with my Mom (who had a great body in those days) when we were at the beach resort in the 70's.

by Anonymousreply 49April 28, 2020 6:15 AM

^^^^Is she the girl in all of his sex pictures and did you have to take the pictures?

by Anonymousreply 50April 28, 2020 6:19 AM

^ Ha! They did not hook up! And we didn't know at the time about his notorious activities. When my Mom saw the movie Auto Focus it freaked her out.

by Anonymousreply 51April 28, 2020 6:23 AM

I once stood in line to see a new Alan Alda movie -With Alan Alda and his wife right behind me in line.

Diana Rigg once invited me to a party -We spent the whole night talking together.

My great grandfather rode the rails with John Dillinger.

My mother was school friends with the mother of Brandon Cruz (The Courtship of Eddie's Father) and he would sometimes come over to my house to play while our mothers visited.

by Anonymousreply 52April 28, 2020 6:24 AM

My dad was at some function and was talking to someone for most of the night whom he didn't recognise. A few days later he pointed out the person in a magazine and said who's that, he's a really nice guy I chatted with him for most of the night. It was Bono from U2.

On a trip to Italy as a child in the 60s, my playmate for one afternoon was the Pope’s niece. No idea how this came about but there’s a picture.

One of my cousins was a journalist at one time and got to interview Elton John once and visit his house.

by Anonymousreply 56April 28, 2020 9:09 AM

My favorite character on Bewitched was Larry Tate. My dad and I were in the coffee shop of the Miramar hotel one morning and there was David White with some friends. I told my dad "OMG that's Larry Tate, my favorite on Bewitched". So David White heard me and came over to say hello, he was a super friendly guy. He asked me if I wanted his autograph and I said no thanks and that made him laugh. I mean I was just a little kid but I felt like asking for autographs was rude.

by Anonymousreply 57April 28, 2020 11:02 AM

Martha Plimpton is my neighbor in Brooklyn

by Anonymousreply 58April 28, 2020 11:11 AM

My mother dated Skip Stephenson.

He's dead now.

by Anonymousreply 64April 28, 2020 11:50 AM

David Janssen asked my grandmother out multiple times and she said she always turned him down. Didn’t want to date an actor.

She also said that Victoria Principal hung around Hollywood then. My mother (her daughter in law) couldn’t believe that she wasn’t her age. My grandmother insisted Victoria was older than she claimed.

Fred Dryer asked my mom out and she turned him down because she’d just started dating my father. He was playing football then. She regretted it - knowing my father, she should!

by Anonymousreply 65April 28, 2020 12:09 PM

On 9/11, I was standing with a group of people -- including Julianne Moore (seriously) -- watching the news unfold on a TV in the lobby of Toronto's Four Seasons hotel.

by Anonymousreply 66April 28, 2020 12:09 PM

Jack Kerouac lived across from us on a cul de sac from the time I was 9 years old to 12. He didn't interact with anyone in the neighborhood except my Dad who invited him in for a Christmas drink. My mother said he wouldn't look her in the eye when they were introduced and he creeped her out. He and his friends would gather and play baseball on the school field across the street. He was not cute at the time. Basically the town drunk who didn't drive and pulled his beer home in a little red wagon.

by Anonymousreply 67April 28, 2020 12:20 PM

I have answered the phone in my apartment and at various times Oriana Falacci, Toni Basil, Andre Gregory have been at the other end asking for someone else who lived there.

by Anonymousreply 68April 28, 2020 12:22 PM

My cousin's wife is the aunt of Dean Cain.

When I was a teenager, my family went to California on vacation and we visited my cousin and his family. They had a barbecue and invited other family members and Dean Cain was one of the people there.

I remember thinking he was really cool because he was an actor was telling people he had just appeared in an episode of "A Different World."

by Anonymousreply 69April 28, 2020 12:26 PM

by Anonymousreply 70April 28, 2020 12:34 PM

r64, that was a bummer. I had no idea. Plus Bill Rafferty is dead too. Protect Sarah Purcell!

by Anonymousreply 71April 28, 2020 1:15 PM

Olympia Snow and I commiserated at an American Airlines gate at National Airport about how American screwed up seat assignments. (They’d just split up her husband and her, despite reservations to sit together, and she was letting him deal with it LOL.). Low key and with a great Maine accent.

by Anonymousreply 72April 28, 2020 1:29 PM

Fabio was in the lobby of my office building one day and, much to my embarrassment, I completely fangirled out on him. Before I knew it I yelled out "I Love You Fabio!" (I was a gay man in my 40s at the time.) He turned around and chuckled in my general direction.

In Ocean Park (Venice, CA) in the 70s I used a laundromat where Divine did his wash. He never seemed happy... but it was a laundromat and it was daylight. My memory is that he was dressed in a very, very large set of white "scrubs." More than once, same scrubs.

Ocean Park in those years... you'd see Diebenkorn, Jane Fonda, Dylan walking the streets. Dylan recorded Street Legal in an old building next to where I lived.

by Anonymousreply 79April 28, 2020 2:11 PM

I lived in Ocean Park then, r79. It's actually in Santa Monica, right on the border of Venice.

by Anonymousreply 80April 28, 2020 2:28 PM

Saw PJ Harvey 'hooked up' to a euthanasia machine that was part of an art installation in Tasmania. She was then at the next table to me having lunch and then waiting for the same flight and then in the next row for a flight to Melbourne.

Very tiny. Sort of floats about.

by Anonymousreply 81April 28, 2020 2:49 PM

R80 I lived in Ocean Park for 20 years... although within SM city limits, most of the world (including LA) think "Santa Monica" is Wilshire, the palisades, the pier, and "north of Montana" kind of neighborhoods. Ocean Park has much more in common with Venice. In the 70s Main St in OP was pretty gritty: homeless, thrift stores, empty storefronts, drugs.... like Venice.

by Anonymousreply 82April 28, 2020 3:01 PM

I forgot to add my biological father, who was born in 1959, was friends with Michael Jackson in Gary, IN. I haven’t seen or spoken to that man in years, and have no desire to. I also believe MJ was a deranged pedophile and cringe every time I hear his music.

by Anonymousreply 85April 28, 2020 3:39 PM

I met Danny DeVito while he was filming the movie Tin Men in 1986. He was very sweet and I was starstruck (and coked out). The scene was filmed in my boyfriend's house in Catonsville MD. Danny's character was trying to sell aluminum siding to the homewowners.

Sharon Stone rented my friend's vacation house in Sonoma wine country when she was on location shooting the box office bomb "Sphere." One weekend, she called my friend, totally pissed off because she went to use the swimming pool and the water was cold and she didn't know how to get the heat on.

My friend said, "Wanna meet Sharon Stone?" Hell, yes, I did, so we jumped into the car and drove to his house in Sonoma. We got there and rang the doorbell. Nobody answered, so we went inside and out back to the pool. She was nowhere to be found. My friend went to the control box for the pool and turned on the heat. We waited a little while to make sure the pool was warming up, and still no Sharon in sight.

So we decided to leave, and I was very disappointed. As we walked back through the house, from upstairs, we heard a voice call out, "Thanks." It was her, but she never graced us with her appearance.

An aunt of mine grew-up with the creators of Superman (I was the youngest of my generation many years)

Joe E Brown (Osgood Fielding in "Some Like it Hot" was a relative of my mother's by marriage.

One of my Dad's cousins worked for the local Columbia Pictures booking office and met many people over the years. When Coca-Cola bought them, she was out w/o a pension.

A friend of mine was cruised by Scott Hamilton, when he was still skating.

I've known Debbi Birx for years.

I was at a Bette Midler concert with a friend who knew her. We got to go backstage and while I was at the food table checking out the offerings, someone behind me said, "Is this stuff any good?" I turned and it was Bette. I stammered "I think so," and ran away like a little girl which must have seemed rude but I was surprised and tongue-tied.

by Anonymousreply 104April 28, 2020 7:46 PM

I have three:

I fooled around with a guy who was on American Idol. He made it to the live shows. He was really into making out and sucking cock, so imagine my surprise when he shows up with his “girlfriend” to audition.

I’ve met Gavin DeGraw three different times in my life. There’s a certain hunkiness to him that might throw you off guard. He’s got broad shoulders, nice chest, good arms and a flat stomach. Like, maybe he played football in high school and kept in shape. I could see him on the cover of a men’s fitness magazine. He’s straight and a singer-songwriter, so he doesn’t dress for his body type, but yeah. Sweet guy, hot body.

There’s a straight porn actor I knew back in college. For anonymity sake, I’ll just say we had several classes together and even worked on a group project. He was pretty quiet, laid-back, soft spoken. It wasn’t until years later I saw him in an instructional porn video and looked up his stage name. He had dyed his hair and gotten muscular and much more aggressive. The college kid I knew didn’t seem like the choking, slapping, spitting, throat-fucking type. It was pretty fucking hot, actually.

R110: Birx has pretty much been the person I expected. She likes to impress authorities and can get off message with audiences. She's a survivor, not a hero. She's also the kind of person who will dress down a subordinate for something minor, but will go behind the back to do something important (like not renewing a contract). She's kept a long professional relationship with Fauci (whom I know but not well), but burned bridges with countless underlings and near peers. She also led a palace coup against a former boss---his superiors were unhappy with him and she took advantage of that by "pleasing" them. I laughed my way through that silly puff piece some deluded twit wrote for the Washington Post.

Used to hang out in a group that included Bob Gunton. You may not recognize his name, but you've probably seen him in dozens of films and TV shows- he was the villain in Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls. Very intelligent and quiet, but not standoffish- he was actually friendly and easy to talk to. He was a great listener and gave me some good insights about my crazy aunt and sociopathic dad. Very grounded and wise.

I worked with an easy-going teacher who rarely swore, but couldn't stop herself from calling Leslie Ann Warren a cunt every chance she got. They were forever haggling over the property line between their homes, and Leslie Ann took some the ginormous pumpkins my coworker had been growing for her kids, because parts of them were sitting on her supposed side of the line. Her husband was pleasant- an attorney, if I remember correctly. He capitulated to Leslie's every demand.

R77 here. I’ve said this in other threads but I don’t believe Chase I straight. He never gave off gay vibes per se, but back when I knew him in 2002/2003 (he is a year older than I), he was very aloof. His parents lived in a large, contemporary house off Willowbend Drive in Willowbend Country and he drove a lifted Tahoe. His parents and sister Candace are all very nice people, conservative but not closed minded.

To be honest, I really wasn’t a fan of his. I don’t have any proof of him no being straight, just a gut feeling.

Tracy was well paid for those gigs, so she dealt with all that, and said that Britney was demanding, but very sweet and a little bit 'off', in like a dementia kind of way. Tracy corrected her once, and said "My name is Tracy", and Brit was like "ohhh, I'm so sorry!" Then 20 minutes later, "Stacy? Can I ask you a question?" Tracy just stopped correcting her, found it charming in the end, and walked away with a ton of cash.

Many years ago, I was a patient at a rehab facility where one of the original members (Lennie) of Sha-Na-Na also happened to be a patient. The place had just opened up and he was it's first official alumnus and I was just the 2nd. He was sitting on a sofa in the communal area and kept staring at me while I registered in the lobby. I think he expected me to recognize him.

He didn't like me very much, it seemed, because I was spending most of my time drawing in my sketch pad, and he voiced his displeasure once by bitching within intentional earshot that he was "...here to get sober, not to draw pictures all day." The rehab had only a skeleton staff at the time because it was so new, and I was bored stiff, so I was only doing what I was drawn to do (pun intended).

Btw, at the same place where I worked with Andrea, I worked with Bowzer's ex-wife, Mary Bauman. R168's post reminded me of that. She was quite the nutty professor type and most of us liked her. She dressed as a giant chicken every year for the egg drop competition. I saw Bowzer briefly at a party she threw. He was polite but was there to do something in the studio behind their house, so he just said hello to anyone who spoke to him, then went out back.

I also met Gary Cole, who was very quiet and serious. He gave a talk at an autism seminar about parents grieving the loss of the "typical" child they'd expected.

I went to college (UGA) with Wayne Knight, Seinfeld's Newman. He was basically the same person that he was on the tv show, even back then (mid-70's). Constantly doing pratfalls, aggressively "zany". I did not know him well, and he probably would have been a pain in the ass to spend much time around; he was constantly drawing attention to himself in a kind of irritating way. Friends of mine who were in drama and television were better acquainted with him.

My ex boyfriend’s father took Suzanne Pleshette on a few dates back around 1960. He met her through her father who was looking for a “nice Jewish boy” for her at the time. In 1985, my boyfriend was 21 and had just moved to LA. He was walking down the street and who should come toward him only Suzanne Pleshette.! He called after her and she stopped and spoke to him. He told her who he was and that she had dated his father. She remembered and joked that her father must have knew what was coming as she was then married to her second goy.

When I was 21 I was flying back to Dublin to see my grandmother who has been taken into hospital the day before. They had overbooked the flight and I was bumped into business class (first and last time that has happened) I go to my seat and who was next to me only Joan Rivers! This was before business seats were the more private pods that they are today. So I was right beside Joan for almost 7 hours. I was scared shitless to say anything but an hour before landing as they started serving breakfast she started a conversation and we chatted for the rest of the journey. I told her why I was going home and she gave me the most lovely pep talk and shared her regret over not being with her mother when she passed and the guilt she felt for living so far away from her parents. She was the loveliest women and she radiated such a real warm, maternal vibe. Nothing at all like her stage persona. I told her I loved her book Enter Talking and she signed my boarding card so I could use it as a bookmark, I have it framed on my wall to this day.

[quote]R189 someone is pulling [R181]'s leg......FF never had a child.....I know members of her family and knew her slightly - I repeat Frances Farmer never had a child.

Well, looking over the timeline of practically any person’s life, there are spaces where they could have had a child in secret that was then given up for adoption.

Though it’s a grim thought, Farmer was supposedly raped while institutionalized. If this indeed happened and she got pregnant, it would be perfectly plausible that the hospital would give the resulting infant away. My question would be, how did this supposed adoptee eventually come to know who their birth mother was??

Back in the mid-1970’s, a friend was walking with pals in Hollywood. Of all people, Orson Welles approached them and said, “I’m shooting a movie around the corner and need some extras. Can you you help me?” Of course, they jumped at the chance and were actually directed by Welles in a scene or two.

No one asked the title of the film and my friend thinks it was a Welles pet project that was never released.

But still... it was Orson Welles!

R192, except that Frances Farmer was not raped when she was institutionalized. (Nor for that matter was she lobotomized.)

There is an amazing early episode of You Must Remember This on Frances Farmer that details how the made up stuff about Farmer was created.

Apparently the best selling biography of Farmer, Shadowlands, contains a lot of fictional incidents as the author admitted when he sued Brooksfilms for plagiarism claiming that by scenes about Farmer's lobotomy in the film Frances could only have come from his book because in real life she did not have a lobotomy--he had made that up! (And her "autobiography" was written by a friend after Farmer's death with lots of invented material.)

A little more research revealed that the author of Shadowlands was a Scientologist who was rabidly anti-psychology which may have motivated his stories about the institution.

Thank you for indulging my tangent.

R193 - Maybe Wayne Knight *is* shy. It never occurred to me. I was not friends with him, I just encountered him when he was with people who were friends of mine. He was always "on", always being a ham of one kind or another, seeking attention; looking back I'd say it was kind of desperate behavior, but only to the extent that it seemed kind of funny. It was 45 years ago...

A friend of mine ended up cooking dinner for Julia Child at a dinner party in Cambridge MA sometime back in the '80s. She prepared Country Captain, a kind of fussy, campy Southern variation on fried chicken, that's cooked in a curry sauce. She said Julia Child had a 'hearty appetite', and had seconds.

by Anonymousreply 207May 2, 2020 5:56 PM

My sister and I met Paloma Picasso in the late 80s at Musée d'Orsay. She had overheard my sister ask me "isn't that Paloma Picasso?" She smiled, and said "yes". We enjoyed a brief chat outside as she was leaving.

I met Julian Schnabel and his wife Jacqueline Beaurang at Waddington Gallery. They were exceedingly warm and outgoing.

My sister once dated "a future ex" of Shannon Dougherty, long before she was famous, or had ever met him.

My closest childhood lady friend slept with Astro from UB40 after we somehow managed to slip backstage after a concert.

by Anonymousreply 215May 2, 2020 9:17 PM

Adding to my post at R99. I'll preface this by saying my grandmother gave up acting in the early 50s. She died a few years ago; in retrospect I wish I'd learned way more about her time in NYC theater as a young woman. One story I heard in real-time, though: sometime in the late 2000's or so she was having brunch with a friend at the Plaza -- something they approached as a lark, as she was very much NOT a lady who lunched. She ran into Elaine Stritch there, who actually recognized her and greeted her warmly despite not having seen each other in 60 years. Turns out they were both in an off-broadway production of Little Foxes way back when. Sadly, I don't even know what role she played!

by Anonymousreply 216May 2, 2020 10:33 PM

R216 Hmm. I'm a little dubious Elaine Stritch would have recognized grandma 60 years later.

by Anonymousreply 217May 2, 2020 10:54 PM

R217, Elaine Stritch was very active and alert for years. She worked almost until she passed away.

by Anonymousreply 218May 2, 2020 11:15 PM

My mother rode in a NYC hospital elevator with Hugh Downs and the Duchess of Windsor at the same time. I saw Broderick Crawford in front of Buckingham Palace. Bess Myerson was my cousin. I saw Grant Show in a Greenwich Village coffee shop (very handsome in person), as well as countless soap stars. Sam Champion once cruised me; he was on his bicycle in Manhattan.

by Anonymousreply 219May 2, 2020 11:26 PM

R217, My guess is that my grandmother ran across Stritch and re-introduced herself, and that Stritch did then remember her. My grandmother's stories sometimes elided details for dramatic effect, but she didn't fabricate. She was genuinely surprised, touched, and a little wistful. She didn't really dwell on her lost past, though.

by Anonymousreply 220May 2, 2020 11:30 PM

R220 That would make more sense.

by Anonymousreply 221May 2, 2020 11:37 PM

R199's friend wins, for my money!

by Anonymousreply 222May 2, 2020 11:44 PM

Elaine Stritch once played Birdie in The Little Foxes. Was your grandmother the maid or Alexandra?

by Anonymousreply 223May 2, 2020 11:52 PM

My mother and her friends/family all knew George Lazenby (the first James Bond) as he grew up near them. Apparently he was incredibly handsome but knew it, and headed over to London as a model. She said he was ‘fun to be around’ and dated the same very attractive girl for a long time.

by Anonymousreply 224May 3, 2020 12:11 AM

I don't know, R223. As I mentioned, I wish I'd asked for more details. I thought she'd only done summer stock and was surprised to hear she'd been off broadway, let alone with Stritch. I guess it's possible she was even an understudy? **I actually just tried googling the production for the first time, and found reference to a 1947 run at "the Rooftop Theater" on Houston St. Apparently it was affiliated with the Dramatic Workshop, so that makes sense. More like Off-Off-Broadway, though.

Prince danced right in front of me facing me in the early 80s at a Minneapolis nightclub...he was so short I wasn’t sure it was him until a ton of woman swarmed him...my college friend said “u were dancing with Prince!”

A cop told me Bill Clinton was coming out the Lowe’s hotel in Santa Monica a few months prior to him winning his 1st term and I got to talk with him and got pics and an autograph—-the sexual energy off him was phenomenal. He said he needed my vote and I told him he was going to win.

Ozzie Osborne came in an elevator and said “nice dog darling,” I had my moms basset hound , she was a physician who took him to work and there was a radio station in her office building.

I was a nanny and met Carly Simon and her kids and Carl Bernstein through the woman I worked for...also writer James Marquand.

I got to see Nureyev’s Dakota apartment as he left the door opened as I saw him rushing to a performance at Lincoln center as I was coming back while staying at my uncles apartment there. That uncle was friends with John and Yoko Lennon too. That uncle met eleanor Roosevelt on a ship to Europe and had tea with her. He came from a small logging town in WA and later a prominent painter said he had an uncanny way of starting at the top.

I think she was pissed because I didn't ask for her autograph or show that I recognized her...

R209 I used to be Julia Child's neighbor, too, but a guy I worked with and his wife were her next-door neighbors. I'd see her at parties at their house. The wife told me she was the greatest neighbor - she'd yell over the fence, "Peg, I made 30 pounds of duck breast for the show yesterday and they didn't use it. Will you take some?" She said they'd been eating her leftovers, happily, for years.

When Elizabeth Taylor was doing "The Little Foxes" on tour with Richard Burton in Boston, I used to eat in a restaurant on Charles Street called Rebecca's that had wonderful desserts and a take-out bakery. Sometimes I'd get a piece of cake or pie to go and one time, they were out of their signature pecan pie. They were famous for it, always had it on the menu, and I asked why they were out - it was early. They told me they'd underestimated how many to make that day and besides, they had a standing order to send two pies, every day, to Miss Taylor's suite at the 57 Hotel. Liz got my fucking pie!

I knew someone who dated the step daughter of Elizabeth Gilbert. Her father was the Javier Bardem character in the Eat Pray Love film. She was not included in the book like her brother was, as she had had a history of drug addiction. It was thought it would be a downer and did not match the version of the story Elizabeth Gilbert was trying to tell. I believe the book was a romanticised version of their lives. I don't know, I never read it or saw the film.

A friend of a friend dated Ricky Martin for 4 years in Melbourne. This was before he was out.

A friend of mine who works for CNN told me that he rode in an elevator, about a decade ago, with Queen Noor of Jordan (the former Lisa Halaby). He was surprised because she was wearing blue jeans. And she apparently has an ENORMOUS ass. He said she was not reserved or standoffish at all, something he found peculiar in a real, woman Queen.

by Anonymousreply 240May 3, 2020 12:18 PM

I once rode an elevator with Laverne Cox. I got in the elevator, and there she was (she's tall as hell) in full makeup and a big, billowing gown. She was standing with a mousey white girl who I assume was her agent or publicist.

When the elevator opened and I saw her standing there, I must have looked star struck or something, because when I got in the elevator, the publicist looked at me and slightly shook her head like, "Don't say anything." So I didn't. I rode the elevator to the 25th floor, looking straight ahead. The silence was deafening.

I have friends who dated Andy Kaufman and Twitler in decades past. The latter friend definitely traded up with her current partner, who's an absolute sweetheart.

My 5th grade teacher was a friend of Bill Clinton's, so when we went on a field trip to tour the AR state capitol he came out to the bus to speak to her, and patted me on the back (I was the kid in the seat closest to the front). He's very charismatic.

I've been friends/acquaintances with a number of people who worked behind the scenes on Angel in the early 2000s, but I don't know that even the highest up could be considered a celebrity.

Lucille Ball lived in my grandparent's apt building in NYC when she was performing in Wildcat. Joan Crawford moved to the building in the later years of her life. Marty Brill (who I never heard of until moving to Phoenix) was a cast member of a Dick Van Dyke (with Hope Lang) show that was filmed there in the 1970s. He lived in my apartment building and would hang out around the pool sometimes. One time Fannie Flagg came to visit, she was also in the same show. She was a very nice and friendly. Very down to earth. When I lived in LA I dated a guy who worked on the set of General Hospital. This was during the time that Luke and Laura were the rage. One time he took me to the set with him, and wanted to introduce me to Luke and Laura. I had no interest in meeting them. I wanted to meet Monica Quartermaine. Which I did. A bunch of guys in my friend group worked at a high-end hotel known as THE place for celebrities in my flyoverstan city. I used to hang out with them while they worked night audit and sometimes picked them up after their shift since I also worked nights but got off earlier than they did.

I met Janeane Garofalo in the lobby while picking up one of them after he worked night audit. She was asking the front desk where the nearest Starbucks was. She actually introduced herself to me as we were leaving because my friend had helped her with an internet problem in her room the night before and she thought we were a couple.

Jack Black came down in just a robe, seemingly naked underneath, and asked a bunch of random questions. We assumed he was high.

I met Pat Benetar and her husband at the airport. This was pre-9/11 so I was on the concourse waiting for a friend to return from a trip and they were waiting at the next gate over. I was a bit awestruck and she knew it, but they were really nice.

And not quite celebrity, Ted Bundy tried to pick up my aunt while he was on the run after escaping from jail. I guess she sat and talked with him at a gas station and he asked her if she needed a ride. She said she thought he was out of her league so she politely declined.

I worked at Abercombie & Fitch in the late 1980's/early 90's. Our store (and several other fancy boutique shops) was attached to the Four Seasons with an entrance directly from the lobby. A lot of celebrities staying at the hotel wandered into the store. Cher came in and looked around, but didn't buy anything. Robert Wagner and Jill St John came in and carried on a loud conversation as they shopped. They bought several items and were friendly to the staff. Shirley MacLaine came in and bought a colorful summer scarf. Madonna (at the height of her Blonde Ambition fame) popped out of a limo and into the lobby, walked by out entrance and glared at us. Apparently we were not her style. We were in awe and honestly, couldn't blame her.

r259 reminded me of standing in line in front of Katey Sagal and her family (or whoever was with her) at California Adventure. I told it here on another thread. I was waiting in line to check in for a flight from SFO to LAX and the guy in front of me said to the gate agent "Would you mind seating me first. I'm William Shatner." The agent said "Yes sir" and then turned to her coworker and said "Who's William Shatner?" This was a couple of years after Star Trek ended. He went over to a corner, sat down, pulled his hat down, collar up, and started reading the newspaper. No one bothered him. When he got on the plane he sat in the first seat on the aisle (no first class) and now, in the grip of full professional insecurity, tried to make eye contact with everyone who boarded after him. (No lone recognized him -- or cared to.)

My Israeli boyfriend and I bought a house from Jerry Mathers (the "Beav"). He was married to an Israeli woman who was the actual agent. The BF told her I grew up watching Leave It To Beaver and so one day I pulled into my driveway and there he was, waiting for me on my front porch. He was very nice, kind of pasty/chubby but sweet. I asked him if he had any dirt on the show and he said No, everyone was nice. (I believed him) We sat and chatted and then went over to look at the house (in Reseda) which we ended up buying and renting out to the drummer for the 70s rock group Vanilla Fudge.

R268, I don't think it was the same guy. This would have been around '77, long after the original band broke up. The rental house was nothing special. Maybe one of the other original members of the group was trying to get it started again.

R272, I suggest you read a bit more of Mr. Bundy's habits, inclinations, and known and estimated number of victims as well as years of operation.

by Anonymousreply 291May 7, 2020 3:25 AM

My late best friend was friends through her work connections with Richard Gere's brother (family is from Philly area). She also went to "Bandstand" as a teen, and danced with Fabian. Swoon!

by Anonymousreply 292May 7, 2020 3:35 AM

Bundy didn't offer rides. What was the fun of that? He liked to trick, overtake, knock them out and do various things with them later, conscious or not. From fucking corpses to drilling into brains. Dismembering. Coming back for more. He asked women for help but that was a ruse to abscond with them. Same as his police badge and shirt. He didn't just invite women to come for a drive. Ted Bundy's crimes have been seriously under reported. He was as wicked, evil and demented as they come. Yeah he did take and kill that little girl, in his last gasp of freedom. But he wasn't proud of how he did that one.

by Anonymousreply 293May 7, 2020 3:35 AM

My best friend’s mom was one of the muses in a DL favorite — Xanadu. She was also in the major motion picture Godspell.

by Anonymousreply 294May 7, 2020 4:05 AM

Did she wear roller skates everywhere?

by Anonymousreply 295May 7, 2020 5:18 PM

I once changed Lindsey Graham diaper for cash.

by Anonymousreply 296May 7, 2020 5:56 PM

I saw one of Cab Calloway’s last performances around 1980. It was at some college auditorium in Orange County, CA.

by Anonymousreply 297May 8, 2020 2:57 AM

Katie Hanley was in both Godspell and Xanadu but she didn't play a muse.

by Anonymousreply 298May 17, 2020 12:17 AM

A friend of mine was a regular booty call for Peter Weller in his prime as the original RoboCop.

by Anonymousreply 299May 17, 2020 12:20 AM

- A women, I should say

by Anonymousreply 300May 17, 2020 12:20 AM

Christ - WOMAN, I mean. An edit feature would be nice.

by Anonymousreply 301May 17, 2020 12:21 AM

My father attended one of Gypsy Rose Lee’s last performances.

My mother met Elvis Presley on a film location in Florida. She never told me how she came to be there.

She said Elvis was having a disagreement with the director about his wardrobe. He thought his cut off shorts should be cut straight and the director thought they should be cut with pinking shears.

He walked up to my mother and her girlfriend and asked them how they thought the shorts should be. They agreed with him that they should be cut straight.

Decades later when she would tell the story she would say “It was all I could do to keep from saying I think your shorts would look better laying on the ground”

by Anonymousreply 302May 17, 2020 12:40 AM

I have a secondhand Elvis connection too, but it's too identifiable. I worry that my closeted stepbrother might be on here and recognize me.

by Anonymousreply 303May 17, 2020 12:45 AM

R48, that's a fascinating memory, like a moment from a movie.

by Anonymousreply 304May 17, 2020 1:35 AM

When I was a small child, I sailed to Europe with my parents on the SS United States. They always recalled how one of the Barrymores - John? - was on board, and a drunk.

by Anonymousreply 305May 17, 2020 1:52 AM

R29, you're right-- she wasn't a muse, she works with Michael Beck's character as an artist at AirFlo Records.

by Anonymousreply 306May 17, 2020 2:56 AM

I met Linda Lavin while she was doing the 100th take of one of the many versions of the theme from “Alice”.

by Anonymousreply 307May 17, 2020 3:19 AM

R305: Couldn't have been the famous - if also fabulous - actor/drunk John: he died ten years before the United States' maiden voyage. His son, born John Blyth Barrymore in 1932 but known professionally as John Drew Barrymore was a lot of work who did lots of movies in Europe because he hadn't done well in Hollywood. Also: Drew Barrymore's father. He died in 2004 - he'd have been 20 when the United States first sailed and 37 when she was laid up.

"Barrymore's social behavior continued to obstruct his professional progress. In the 1960s, he was occasionally incarcerated for drug use, public drunkenness, and spousal abuse. In 1964 he went to prison for possession of marijuana. In 1967, he was imprisoned for possession of drugs following a car crash. In 1969, he was again arrested for possession of drugs after another car accident. As Barrymore became more and more reclusive, he withdrew from acting, with his final two appearances being a 1974 episode of Kung Fu and an uncredited role in the 1976 film Baby Blue Marine. Barrymore suffered from the same addiction problems that had destroyed his father, and he became a derelict. He was estranged from his family, including his children, and his lifestyle continued to worsen as his physical and mental health deteriorated."

by Anonymousreply 308May 17, 2020 3:23 AM

Interesting, R308. This would have been 1963 so maybe Drew's dad?

by Anonymousreply 309May 17, 2020 3:29 AM

I hosted a surprise rock-and-roll Hollywood birthday party in 2005. I asked Jack Black's band Tenacious D to be the band at the party. They obliged, and it was great fun. Jack also met his now-wife, Tanya Hayden, at said party. They married the next year and are still together with two children. Therefore, I'm considered a part of their story. I go and visit them at their home once in awhile when I'm in LA. I've seen the boys grow from babies to tweenagers. They struggle like all of us with marriage and parenting and scheduling and burn-out and trying to find meaning and joy. But to their credit, they are still very much together, and they are basically just very sweet, down-to-earth, mildly neurotic LA creatives.

by Anonymousreply 310May 17, 2020 3:37 AM

An inlaw sang the iconic opening theme song to an iconic sitcom. Again, I can't get specific because who knows what family members might be on here.

by Anonymousreply 311May 17, 2020 3:43 AM

Why would they care, r311?

by Anonymousreply 312May 17, 2020 4:38 AM

My grandfather and his siblings were child actors in the 1930s. Great-gran was an early Dina Lohan. Allegedly she had a fling with Karloff. My grandfather and his siblings rebelled, quit acting, when back to school and lived totally average lives.

I'm in the background of a paparazzi photo of Robert Pattinson and FKA twigs. I'm on DL Fave The Daily Mail.

by Anonymousreply 313May 17, 2020 5:07 AM

Interesting, r313. Were they in anything we would know? Our Gang?

by Anonymousreply 314May 17, 2020 5:12 AM

R313 The Daily mail? I assume you were proudly flaunting your body while showing your Ex boyfriend what he's missed on your walk to Starbucks.

by Anonymousreply 315May 17, 2020 5:13 AM

R314 Yep! He was in the Gang. He did an interview with his local paper when he was 45ish about his childhood career, his mother's ambition, and why he gave it up. I have a copy laminated.

R315 I'm not Hilary Duff

by Anonymousreply 316May 17, 2020 5:18 AM

I saw Dolly Parton and a very tall cowboy type (husband?) waiting to be seated at Tavern on the Green in Central Park, NYC. Also saw Hugh O'Brian in the audience at a play in NYC. He died in 2016. Dolly was wearing very tight shiny tights/pants. T on the Green is no more, but I always loved it. I saw every play worth seeing 70's and 80's. Sad to say, it is hard to find a play or musical that I want to see now.

by Anonymousreply 317May 17, 2020 5:34 AM

About 15 years ago now, I went to the Gay Clinic in Hollywood to be STD tested after I was informed by a "friend" that he might have passed something on to me. All the testing is free, but I had to participate in one of those interviews with a volunteer asking very specific, personal questions of every sexual practice you've engaged in (think Samantha in Sex and the City). My interviewer was a much older woman interning to get her degree in social work. She looked very familiar. I was able to glance at her name tag, "Barbara Sharma". OMG! I was being interviewed by "Myrna Morgenstein" from the tv show Rhoda..... I asked her about it. She very sweetly informed me that she decided to go back to school after the acting gigs dried up, but she still does an occasional voice-over. She then continued with the interview, "Oral sex? Passive? Aggressive?... Do you swallow?....."

It was surreal.

Wow that's pretty cool! Back in the 80s we had a book by Leonard Maltin about Our Gang and there were biographies and updates on the cast members. I remember there was an entry for one girl (can't remember which one) who said she didn't like to discuss that part of her life which always stuck with me for some reason. Maybe her experience was similar to your grandfather's.

R311 Cindy Greco, who sang the Laverne and Shirley theme song?

by Anonymousreply 320May 17, 2020 12:25 PM

r318 is the quintessential DL post. Discussing oral sex with Myrna Morganstein. It doesn't get much better than that!

by Anonymousreply 321May 17, 2020 1:06 PM

I once peed at a urinal next to Forest Whitaker.

His dick is very small, by the way.

by Anonymousreply 322May 17, 2020 1:09 PM

R318 Didn't the voice tip you off right away? I'm trying to imagine Myrna Morgenstern asking you if you ever engage in fisting in her helium-infused voice.

by Anonymousreply 323May 17, 2020 1:17 PM

I had a boyfriend who was cousins with Big Rosie from Laverne and Shirley. She's the daughter of the Maytag Man.

by Anonymousreply 324May 17, 2020 2:28 PM

Grammy winning cellist Lynn Harrell who died last month. He was playing in the city where I live and my father met him at a tennis club and started hitting balls with him. After that whenever he was in town he came to our middle class suburban home and ate dinner with my parents and all of our 6 kids. And my parents went to all of his concerts. He ate spaghetti and meatballs like the rest of us and sat at the kitchen table. He always seemed happy to be there. I didn't realize how renowned he was until I got older. Fresh Air had an interview replayed with him yesterday.

I did community theatre with a girl who a few years later moved to New York City. She was working in the western bar when Jullia Roberts does doing research for her movie.

Julia jumped up on the bar and she and the girl were dirty dancing. Someone took a picture of them and it ended up on the front of the National Enquirer about Julia's lesbian antics.

A few days after the paper came out, my friend got a big bouquet of roses and an apology note from Julia....and a check for $100.

by Anonymousreply 326May 17, 2020 3:17 PM

*was doing* not *does*

by Anonymousreply 327May 17, 2020 3:18 PM

R326 Kind of hard to believe if you've read a lot of the JR stories on here and how horrible she is to "regular" people. But I will take your word for it. :)

by Anonymousreply 328May 17, 2020 8:44 PM

I know R328......but that's what the girl told me.....

by Anonymousreply 329May 17, 2020 10:03 PM

Just because someone is a raging narcissistic bitch doesn't necessarily mean they're awful to *everyone* they meet.

by Anonymousreply 330May 17, 2020 10:19 PM

Years go I was directing a show for a local youth theatre. The cutest little girl came in to audition, maybe 6 or 7, and she just sparkled. There was nothing in the show that she could do -but we ended up creating a role for her just because she was so cute and showed so much personality onstage. Her name is Vanessa, and she could tell a few stories nowadays -Especially about a hot actor who did a lousy film with Robert DeNiro...

by Anonymousreply 331May 17, 2020 10:28 PM

I was sitting in a gay bar once and a trans friend of mine quoted a Martha line from "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf." A laugh sounded from the next booth. It was Edward Albee.

by Anonymousreply 332May 17, 2020 10:39 PM

r331's Vanessa:

R332 That's one of the greatest stories I've ever seen.

by Anonymousreply 334May 17, 2020 11:02 PM

Sorry, [R333], not even close. But thanks for playing.

by Anonymousreply 335May 17, 2020 11:04 PM

Apparently Crystal has a white Dad and a Mexican mom r480, I had no idea til that poster brought it up but that's what google says. Don't think it was mentioned on the show.

by Anonymousreply 336May 17, 2020 11:05 PM

For those who might not have picked up on the obvious clues, R331 is talking about Vanessa Hutgens and Zac Efron.

by Anonymousreply 337May 18, 2020 7:21 PM

^^^ And we have a winner!
