Christopher Reeve, so smart and sexy

I wonder what his career would have been like had he not had that stupid accident?

Back in his heyday, seemingly not a day would go by when some stranger wouldn’t feel obliged to tell me how much I looked like him. The last time, though, was a few years ago when, as I was leaving a grocery store, an elderly man stopped to stare & then, with an outstretched finger, blurted out, “You look just like Christopher Reeve.”

by Anonymousreply 1April 27, 2020 3:25 AM

Christopher Reeve couldn't act. He would have eventually turned to soap operas to make a living.

by Anonymousreply 2April 27, 2020 3:39 AM

Didn’t his career go into a slump after Superman ?

by Anonymousreply 3April 27, 2020 3:57 AM

Christopher Reeve lived near Isabella's on Columbus Avenue in the late 80s when I was bartending there. A few times he came in and sat at the end of the bar by himself. He was very quiet and seemed shy. He was stunningly handsome in person. You couldn't help but be transfixed.

by Anonymousreply 4April 27, 2020 3:58 AM

R2 Christopher Reeve started out in a soap opera called Love Of Life many years ago. It helped bring him closer to fame and fortune.

by Anonymousreply 5April 27, 2020 3:59 AM

Let's have a photo of him. Only 52 when he died.

He's absolutely gorgeous in the interview. And you can tell he still was maintaining his Superman bod. Talk about husband material. He was perfect at that time. Dreamboat!

R5 Christopher Reeve in Love Of Life.

by Anonymousreply 10April 27, 2020 4:11 AM

^ I mean that in a good way.

by Anonymousreply 11April 27, 2020 4:12 AM

More good looking in person than in the camera.

by Anonymousreply 12April 27, 2020 4:12 AM

Absolutely beautiful!

by Anonymousreply 13April 27, 2020 4:13 AM

Christopher Reeve would be 67 if he were still alive.

so many American eldergays are stuck in the past

by Anonymousreply 15April 27, 2020 4:23 AM

His best quality was that he didn't fidget.

by Anonymousreply 16April 27, 2020 4:23 AM

Ironically he died looking like Lex Luthor.

by Anonymousreply 17April 27, 2020 4:25 AM

I'll bet his cock was perfect, too. What a waste.

by Anonymousreply 18April 27, 2020 4:29 AM

"so many American eldergays are stuck in the past"

That's called aging. For most, there are more things to remember from the past than to look forward to in the future.

by Anonymousreply 19April 27, 2020 4:33 AM

TOTALLY GAY too.

by Anonymousreply 20April 27, 2020 4:42 AM

I think he would've continued to get work, probably in TV more than anything.

He would've made a killing at the conventions for being in the Superman movies.

by Anonymousreply 21April 27, 2020 4:51 AM

He said, they didn't want to give him Superman because he was "too faggy" looking.

He was right.

by Anonymousreply 22April 27, 2020 4:53 AM

I'm glad when horses get revenge on the assholes who ride them.

by Anonymousreply 23April 27, 2020 4:57 AM

the nonexistent upper lip is mystifying

by Anonymousreply 24April 27, 2020 5:08 AM

I never really got into the Superman thing so I don't think I've ever seen him in anything but he was completely charming in that Cavett interview. I think I'll now check out "Deathtrap".

by Anonymousreply 25April 27, 2020 5:22 AM

[quote]I'm glad when horses get revenge on the assholes who ride them.

You got that right!

by Anonymousreply 26April 27, 2020 7:12 AM

I think he was a good actor. He was PERFECT in Superman. Not just as Superman but as Clark Kent. The way he would distinguish between both it made the film. Even though we know they're the same person and everyone in the movie should know it too, Reeve pulled off the dual roles brilliantly. He was like Lynda Carter in Wonder Woman - he had that right amount of sweetness and innocence without being schmaltzy or silly. I think that's why their interpretations remain so popular because they're such good, decent people.

He's also excellent in Somewhere in Time, Deathtrap and Switching Channels. He showed enough range in all three films.

by Anonymousreply 27April 27, 2020 7:34 AM

Superman was the first movie I ever saw. I got so overexcited I threw up my ice cream (in my defence I was four).

His career was basically over when he had his accident. I think he would have done some guest spots as stunt casting on some of the Superman tv shows or possibly a night time soap. He was a really good guy he called a friend of mine who was paralyzed in a car accident and gave him a pep talk. Told him to remain physically strong. It’s obviously very tragic that he didn’t make it.

by Anonymousreply 33April 27, 2020 12:31 PM

[quote]so many American eldergays are stuck in the past

You're enjoying the present so much r15?

by Anonymousreply 34April 27, 2020 12:34 PM

His son is super hot.

by Anonymousreply 35April 27, 2020 1:21 PM

Okay, not SUPER hot, but he’s very attractive.

by Anonymousreply 36April 27, 2020 1:27 PM

Talk about being blessed with good genes! Perfect face and body structure. In an era before sculpting and surgery and ohotoshop, he was the real deal. Playing the DeathTrap role makes him a gay hero. Much respect for the man.

by Anonymousreply 38April 27, 2020 1:31 PM

He suffered from alopecia and even before his accident they were having to work around his hair loss. Had he not had the accident, he probably would have ended up shaving his head. So visualize a bald Chris.

by Anonymousreply 39April 27, 2020 1:35 PM

[quote]He was PERFECT in Superman. Not just as Superman but as Clark Kent.

This! They’re really two different characters, and he nailed both the charm and confidence of Superman and the painful awkwardness of Clark Kent. His performances in Superman I and II are classic cinema at this point.

by Anonymousreply 40April 27, 2020 1:47 PM

R15, I'm sure as you get older, you'll look back with nostalgia at the beautiful men of your youth, who you longed for or lusted after. Like you, when I was in my teens I rolled my eyes at my Dad listening to Glenn Miller or stories of my Mom swooning over Frank Sinatra. Then I listened to the music, and I learned to like it. And as for nostalgia for good-looking men from long ago...have you ever seen George O'Brien? Check out his films from the silent era through "She Wore A Yellow Ribbon." Woof, Baby! And although I confess that I really don't like rap or some other contemporary music, I would love to introduce Common to some acts that might be uncommon in his experience!!

That Dick Cavett show was from 1981. It was the year I graduated from high school. I believe "Superman" came out that fall. Christopher Reeve was a beautiful man. I remember desperately waiting for that movie to premier. I developed a crush on the actor. The news was terrible, when I heard about his accident.

BTW, I'm about the 40th reply here and no one has yet to mention the casual homophobic joke that the urbane and sophisticated host quipped in his opening monologue? R15, that's one thing about that era that I'm not nostalgic for. Little snide comments like that were all too common.

by Anonymousreply 41April 27, 2020 1:48 PM

Eldergay here---nostalgia is basically a corruption of history. Nothing wrong with remembering his beauty and his body of worth, although he just ok as an actor. Superman was meant to be underplayed (George Reeves who was no Olivier, set the template for that), so his bland approach to both roles A neighbor of mine worked for his foundation and thought the world of him and his wife.

by Anonymousreply 42April 27, 2020 1:52 PM

"work" not "worth".

by Anonymousreply 43April 27, 2020 1:53 PM

R41-SUPERMAN was released in 1978. SUPERMAN 2 was released in 1981.

by Anonymousreply 44April 27, 2020 2:12 PM

R44, Thanks. Blame it on a faulty memory. It happens.

My comments are still true. After I wrote what I did, I went back and listened to the interview. Christopher Reeve talked about playing the role of Ken in "Fifth of July." I get in NY, and in high school we had certain days in the trimester which were organized so the students could explore what the city had to offer culturally...museum visits, walking tours, plays. I remember seeing a Wednesday matinee of that show. Richard Thomas had replaced Christopher Reeve in the role. The first scene of the play has Ken being kissed by a man. When that happened, some kids groaned audibly. It was a sign of the casual homophobia and unease with two men kissing at the time. Richard Thomas broke his role...he stopped the play, told the crew to bring down the curtain, and the play restarted.

by Anonymousreply 45April 27, 2020 2:21 PM

He looks like he was on football team at Harvard @R31

by Anonymousreply 46April 27, 2020 2:42 PM

I think Will Reeve used or still does work for ESPN. I don't have cable tv, and I rarely watch ESPN.

He's a hell of a person that the accident didn't make him a bitter shell. I probably would be.

by Anonymousreply 50April 28, 2020 8:27 PM

R50: He said he was bitter and wanted to die, but Dana's love saved him. It is in his autobiography "Still Me".

by Anonymousreply 51April 28, 2020 8:34 PM

In his last few years, he seemed pretty hopeful and optimistic about the possibilities of stem-cell research. I think he truly believed that he would walk again someday.

by Anonymousreply 52April 28, 2020 8:35 PM

Stem cells still have amazing possibilities. Republicans have been shitting on medical breakthroughs your decades. They claim to be moral, even though stem cells from gladly willing donors are fertilized in a lab, and would never become viable life. If we had been able to do the proper research, there would be many more lifesaving treatments today. Maybe not in time to save him, but in time to save millions of others.

by Anonymousreply 56April 28, 2020 10:45 PM

I thought, in the 1980s, that he was okay. I didn’t understand why gay men gushed over his looks.

Yet, over the years, he showed the world what a beautiful and genuine soul he had. His later years displayed a classic handsomeness. He was courageous, sensitive, caring and kind. He was no longer just “okay”, he was one of the most beautiful men who ever lived.

by Anonymousreply 57April 29, 2020 12:00 AM

I read he was a jerk before his accident.

by Anonymousreply 58April 29, 2020 12:09 AM

R58: Link please? I always heard he was a nice guy from people who worked with him, worked for him and fans on the street.

by Anonymousreply 59April 29, 2020 12:16 AM

Christopher Reeve as Superman and Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman are the two most perfect portrayals of an actor playing a superhero. They both embodied those characters and also looked exactly right, nobody else has ever equaled it.

by Anonymousreply 60April 29, 2020 12:21 AM

[quote]Was he hung?

Dana never played with anything under 8.5"

by Anonymousreply 61April 29, 2020 1:07 AM

The pale skin and black hair with blue eyes...it's kind of like Snow White. I'm a lesbian, and when I saw Superman 2 in the theater, I was still a kid, but I thought he was the most beautiful man I had ever seen. And I still do.

by Anonymousreply 62April 29, 2020 1:19 AM

Christopher Reeve had that look that we would call All American.

by Anonymousreply 64April 29, 2020 3:08 AM

I've heard many stories that he was a jerk. Some on here. Like something about a group giving him a tee shirt they customized and him saying something like "Great another boat rag". A lot of people thought it was karma when he had his accident.

by Anonymousreply 65April 29, 2020 4:31 AM

Lynda was perfect as Diana/WW in its first season set during WW2. As modern day WW she was too jaded and kind of a bitch.

by Anonymousreply 66April 29, 2020 5:12 AM

I think the greater tragedy was his wife dying of lung cancer - and having never smoked. After taking care of him.

by Anonymousreply 67April 29, 2020 5:18 AM

I think Reeve and Carter were perfect because they played kind, intelligent and thoughtful heroes with a touch of innocence and dignity, which seems to resonate with people even when they're jaded or cynical or have a lunatic for President. They represent goodness and decency. I think Chris Evans was the only who was closest to capturing that with Captain America in the Avengers series. I couldn't take Robert Downey Jr. and his smarminess as Iron Man over three individual films and then the Avengers movies.

The portrayals by Reeve and Carter are timeless. They are still beloved to this day.

by Anonymousreply 68April 29, 2020 5:20 AM

(R68) gets it.

by Anonymousreply 69April 29, 2020 5:31 AM

Definitely agree r68. Wonder Woman was 45 years ago and young people today are familiar with the show. They know Lynda Carter. That's pretty amazing after so many years.

by Anonymousreply 70April 29, 2020 5:42 AM

ITA R68!

by Anonymousreply 71April 29, 2020 6:34 AM

RDJ is smarmy and smug, a little goes a long way. I've never liked him much, and think he's very overrated.
