Jeff Goldblum Asks Muslim Drag Race Contestant About LGBT Rights

Jeff Goldblum became a topic of discussion on social media for his questions about Islam's treatment of the LGBTQ community and women during Friday's episode of "RuPaul’s Drag Race."

Goldblum's questions came after contestant Jackie Cox walked the runway in a patriotic red and white striped kaftan and a blue hijab outlined with 50 stars for the show's "Stars & Stripes" theme.

Goldblum continued asking Cox about her religion's stance on the LGBTQ community and women.

"Is there something in that religion that is anti-homosexuality and anti-woman? Does that complicate the issue?" the actor asked. "I'm just raising it and thinking out loud and maybe being stupid."

RuPaul quickly chimed in noting how drag has always "shaken the tree" and if there was ever a place to make that sort of statement, "this is the stage to do it."

Cox admitted it's a "complex issue" and that she has her own "misgivings" about how the LGBTQ community is treated in the Middle East.

"What is so important to me is that if you just happen to be different, then live that truth," Cox said.

She continued noting how the Muslim ban affected her family and "destroyed" her

People on social media called out Goldblum for his "dangerous" comments. So was Jeff Goldblum out of line?

He wasn't out of line, but would have done better to ask if there is something in religion (as in all religions) that is homophobic and misogynist. The answer would have been yes, yes, there is--in ALL of them. Period.

by Anonymousreply 3April 26, 2020 12:50 AM

He said absolutely nothing wrong. I'm genuinely baffled by how hyper-sensitive SJWs are to any criticism of Islam. They'll insult "Karens" and "privileged white cis gays" all day long under the banner of intersectionality, but an ultra-conservative ideology like Islam is off-limits. Bizarre.

by Anonymousreply 4April 26, 2020 12:51 AM

Is there homophobia in Zoroastrianism?

by Anonymousreply 5April 26, 2020 12:51 AM

Most religions are anti-gay and anti-women, including plenty of Christian denominations. If you don't think evangelicals here would love to round up gays here and chop their heads off, you are living in a fantasy.

by Anonymousreply 6April 26, 2020 1:32 AM

As long as Czechnya has concentration camps for gay people Islam deserves all the loathing it gets and more. I was surprised in a good way that drag race brought it up.

by Anonymousreply 35April 27, 2020 1:50 AM

My interpretation of what Goldblum said is this "I would imagine you must be very conflicted where on the one side you are very proud of your Persian heritage but on the other side your religion is aggressively anti gay."

by Anonymousreply 36April 27, 2020 1:53 AM

Drag Race would never air there. Drag queens would never be able to openly tour and make a living from doing drag. Pride parades don't happen. There is no WeHo or gay bars in every major city. There is no gay marriage. PDA between two men can get you arrested.

Is there discrimination everywhere - yes. It is not all equal. I have homophobic evangelical Christian relatives here. Their view is love the sinner, hate the sin. They would never wish harm on anyone, they would just try and pray the gay away.

by Anonymousreply 40April 27, 2020 2:18 AM

[quote] [R35] ignores Islam's treated of gays....and calls others Nazis.

Nice try. Nowhere did I ignore anyone's treatment of gays. But all Muslims do not act or speak with one mind.

The performer was trying to make a statement against Trump's travel ban which is making it impossible for his mother to be with his dying sister by wearing an outfit that said that Muslims can be just as patriotic as any other Americans. Which part of that don't you agree with? Do you think Trump's travel ban is fair and legitimate? Do you think Muslims cannot be patriotic Americans? Do you think the performer can't care about his mother and aunt or show his pride in where he came from until he condemns the actions of every other Muslim in the entire world first because he is somehow responsible in some way for other people and governments of other countries?

by Anonymousreply 41April 27, 2020 2:18 AM

No, he wasn't being Islamaphobic at all. As a non-white person, I do think it's weird that part of social justice theory is that all white people in America are supposed to "complicit" for what their ancestors did in America(I think there's a difference between feeling complicit and acknowledging that being white gives you privileges). But if that's the case, why is it wrong to basically expect Muslims to be homophobic? In Britain, 52% of British Muslims feel that homosexuality should be banned. Yet it's not fair for Goldblum to ask that question?

You have let the assholes move the goalposts so far you can't see the stadium. R5 Zoroastrianism condems homosexuality as a form of demon worship and therefore, sinful and worthy of execution. No surprise there. (Perhaps that’s why our favorite Parsi, Freddie Mercury, never came out to his traditional parents.) Reformists are more accepting but their scripture is what it is.

Yet another ludicrous attempt at parity. Homosexuality is socially abhorrent and a crime in Muslim countries, which remain at the forefront of preventing gay rights progress in international forums. The problem is not Xtianity societies, where gays enjoy legal protection and acceptance. The problem is Muslim societies, where gays are discriminated against, persecuted and yes, murdered, not only by the State, but by the fathers, brothers and cousins.

by Anonymousreply 60April 27, 2020 10:48 AM

When I heard there was controversy about his comments before watching the episode, I was expecting something actually controversial. He literally just asked a question about how someone reconciles their religion with who they are and what they do, which is an entirely fair question, and was completely related to the discussion.

I think people seem to forget that you are allowed to criticise something without demonising it entirely and being critical of any ideology is not bigotry. It's something not very intelligent people seem to struggle comprehending though.

by Anonymousreply 61April 27, 2020 11:13 AM

R61, it's a product of the twitter/facebook age. People will post whatever is on their mind 24/7 without a filter. Which means even little things like this get blown up. And I do think it's really interesting that many people on the left can (rightfully) criticize American Christianity for all it's absurdity but get so offended when anyone suggests that countries with Islamic laws or a majority of Muslims are backwards. Guess what--yes, they fucking are!!!

by Anonymousreply 62April 27, 2020 11:24 AM

R59, Muslims in America do tend to be way more liberal than the ones in other western countries like Britain and France. Wonder why that is. This is random but something I learned recently. Prior to the invasion of Iraq, a large majority of Muslim Americans actually voted for Bush in 2000. The invasion changed that very quickly, obviously.

by Anonymousreply 63April 27, 2020 11:32 AM

Liberals say nothing about the Muslim treatment of gays and their torture of them. If they say something it is with a very soft voice. Republicans don't care, but one expects more from liberals, their weakness is loud and clear.

Here is a report that studies acceptance in countries around the world. The chart with all the countries starts on page 30. The far right column is the most recent data (2014-2017). Each country is given an acceptance index based on a range of questions and factors (see the previous 30 pages if you want the details).

[quote] If you really think that in 2020, [R90], then do yourself and all of us here a favor and schedule a trip to Iran for you and your boyfriend. Make sure to test that theory and engage in lots of PDA.

Do you really not get the difference between Muslim people in general and the governments of Muslim nations?

Government, elders, religious leaders, education policies, laws of the land.... with no opposing viewpoint....all color who we are and who we become and what we believe.

"Half of all British Muslims think homosexuality should be illegal, poll finds"

Not just sinful.... but illegal

American Muslims tend to be way more successful and educated than the ones in Britain and France.

by Anonymousreply 102April 27, 2020 9:37 PM

R99 thank you for that, very interesting, and useful in that it is measuring social attitudes rather than legislation, i.e the attitude of the people in general rather than that of the governments. It is very revealing. Iran comes in at 164th, 11th worst - so R90 wasnt wrong. The "difference between Muslim people in general and the governments of Muslim nations" is insignificant as R99's excellent survey reveals

by Anonymousreply 103April 27, 2020 9:37 PM

Which means half don't believe that. So when you say Muslims this or Muslims that as if they all believe the same thing you are full of shit.

by Anonymousreply 104April 27, 2020 9:38 PM

From R101:

[quote] Nearly a quarter (23%) supported the introduction of sharia law in some areas of Britain, and 39% agreed that “wives should always obey their husbands”, compared with 5% of the country as a whole. Two-thirds (66%) said they completely condemned people who took part in stoning adulterers, and a further 13% condemned them to some extent. Nearly a third (31%) thought it was acceptable for a British Muslim man to have more than one wife, compared with 8% of the wider population.

[quote] Nearly a third (31%) thought it was acceptable for a British Muslim man to have more than one wife, compared with 8% of the wider population.

Who the fuck comprises that 8%?? Definitely not Mormons.

by Anonymousreply 106April 27, 2020 9:51 PM

R106 the Muslim population of England is 5.2%, and in London is 12%.... so, yes, definitely not Mormons

[quote]Yes, many in their countries do not like what's going on but don't have the power for change. I saw some commenting on Haaz Sleiman's instagram.

I was following Haaz Sleiman on Twitter for awhile because I thought he was so dreamy, but....he's a total idiot. He's as simple as the day is long!

All religions are shit.

by Anonymousreply 110April 28, 2020 1:28 AM

And it means that HALF do!

Muslims in Muslim-majority countries lack the obsessive focus on LGBTs that conservative Christians have developed. Yes, Islam is somewhat hostile to LGBTs, but Islam as a whole seems barely aware that LGBTs exist, unless attention is drawn to them. By contrast, evangelical Christianity has all these ministries whose main focus seems to be prosecuting a culture war against gays.

What I wouldn’t give for a culture war!

by Anonymousreply 113April 28, 2020 11:04 AM

It's so great to live in a country that has lesbian and gay anti-discrimination laws in all states! Oh wait...

by Anonymousreply 114April 28, 2020 12:28 PM

If I could I'd swap out the Islamophiles with gay people trapped in Muslim countries. Those queens trapped would enjoy freedom and deserve it meanwhile the dopes get to experience Islam raw. Maybe it's what they want 😂

by Anonymousreply 115April 28, 2020 11:39 PM

R115

You're a crazy dumbass. It’s the Islamophobes and xenophobes who wish to block gay refugees and asylum seekers.

by Anonymousreply 116April 28, 2020 11:48 PM

R116 if it was JUST gay refugees and asylum seekers that were coming into Western countries I'd be happy to let them in by the boatload

Unfortunately that is very much not the case

One reason most liberals are so defensive of Muslims is they tend to look at it as a "race" thing, rather than the "religion" that it is. You can bet if the Muslims were snow white and blonde, the defense would dissipate quicker than leaves in a wind storm.

by Anonymousreply 118April 29, 2020 7:00 PM

Interesting in that UCLA list, the US is at 21--not one or two like some on DL pretend, but 21.

Since the Muslim Drag Race Contestant was American, Goldblum should have asked what the contestant thinks about how Americans treat gays

by Anonymousreply 119April 29, 2020 7:05 PM

[quote] One reason most liberals are so defensive of Muslims is they tend to look at it as a "race" thing, rather than the "religion" that it is.

No, liberals are defensive of attacks against Muslims is that we know how conservatives gain support through skapegoating.

by Anonymousreply 120April 29, 2020 7:06 PM

R89 I came in to say just that, and I find nothing I can add.

by Anonymousreply 121April 30, 2020 11:02 AM

To be fair, maybe Catholic contestants should be asked about pedophile priests, The Inquisition, and the Pope turning a blind eye while Hitler rounded up Jews.

by Anonymousreply 122April 30, 2020 6:27 PM

[quote]To be fair, maybe Catholic contestants should be asked about pedophile priests, The Inquisition, and the Pope turning a blind eye while Hitler rounded up Jews.

How stupid.

The Inquisition? The Pope 80 years ago? Can't you do better than that?

And what question would you ask about pedophile priests? Any Catholic would condemn them.

by Anonymousreply 123April 30, 2020 6:43 PM

Have there been Catholic Drag Queens on the show? Cause honestly, I can't imagine everyone tiptoeing around the whole Catholics on homosexuality thing if there were. I don't think it would be ignored. There are some churchy Protestants, especially black contestants, and maybe they get asked about that too, but I'm not sure.

by Anonymousreply 124April 30, 2020 6:48 PM

[quote]I can't imagine everyone tiptoeing around the whole Catholics on homosexuality thing if there were.

And if Goldblum were to ask a Catholic drag contestant about homosexuality and the Church it would not raise an eyebrow. An we'd be all for it.

But dear God....you can't question a Muslim. They're off limits.

Why is that?

by Anonymousreply 125April 30, 2020 6:54 PM

No, but apparently Muslims are expected to answer for their entire religion. It's absurd. Just as absurd as expecting Catholics to answer for the Inquisition.

by Anonymousreply 126April 30, 2020 11:21 PM

nobody is asking anyone to "answer" for their whole religion, but if you are gay and in a homophobic religion, people are going to wonder, why? what does that mean? do you care that your religion hates people like you?

by Anonymousreply 127April 30, 2020 11:27 PM

[quote]No, but apparently Muslims are expected to answer for their entire religion. It's absurd. Just as absurd as expecting Catholics to answer for the Inquisition.

What are you babbling about? Ask a Catholic about the inquisition and no one would consider it an offensive question.

And asking a Catholic about the Church's stand on homosexuality, or the Priest scandals or whatever is fair. Asking them how they personally deal with all that is perfectly fine. Why not?

But for some reason Muslims are off limits.

Why?

by Anonymousreply 128May 1, 2020 12:33 AM

[quote]Muslims in America do tend to be way more liberal than the ones in other western countries like Britain and France. Wonder why that is.

Muslims in America tend to be more educated and secular. They're not the crazy backass goat herders from tiny towns and villages who are extremely devout like the UK and Europe has.

by Anonymousreply 129May 1, 2020 1:13 AM

The point, racist dimwit, is that all religions have bad shit to answer for. But apparently YOU are only upset by what Muslims do or have done. Why is that?

by Anonymousreply 130May 1, 2020 1:19 AM

[quote]One reason most liberals are so defensive of Muslims is they tend to look at it as a "race" thing, rather than the "religion" that it is. You can bet if the Muslims were snow white and blonde, the defense would dissipate quicker than leaves in a wind storm.

I've been saying this for years. If the majority of Islam practitioners were lily-white Anglo-Saxons, Western white liberals (and governments) would tell them all go fuck themselves. Islam would have about as much respect as Scientology if it were practiced by an Anglo white majority.

by Anonymousreply 131May 1, 2020 1:28 AM

r130 nobody has said that. And I have never in my life known a gay person to defend Islam and all that it entails.

by Anonymousreply 132May 1, 2020 1:28 AM

[quote]But apparently YOU are only upset by what Muslims do or have done. Why is that?

See what you do? Instead of answering the question, you attack, you make stupid assumptions.

by Anonymousreply 133May 1, 2020 1:41 AM

Anybody having a fit of fake outrage over this is a moron

by Anonymousreply 134May 1, 2020 1:49 AM

oh, all religions, at least all modern religions suck when it comes to gay people. why? oh, who the hell knows at this point? If every religion would just shut the fuck up about the subject, everybody in the modern world would probably be better off. But for now, Islam is kinda the worst. Mainly because they still control too many governments. Islam above all should shut the fuck up about the whole subject.

by Anonymousreply 135May 1, 2020 1:52 AM

Has there been a Catholic drag queen, dressed up in a habit, and as a means of “SERIOUS REPRESENTATION!” and not camp?

No?

Then there’s no comparison. There have been tons of Catholics on this show I’m sure: clock all the Pinoy and Latino queens. But they don’t take a symbol of oppression and sanctify it on the runway.
