GAP Might Close Its Doors FOR GOOD

That is how financially on the brink it is

So if they shut their doors for good, where will you buy your clothes?

by Anonymousreply 112August 17, 2020 12:50 AM

Whatever will the Gap Playlist troll do now?

by Anonymousreply 1April 23, 2020 7:28 PM

I'll buy my clothes at the same places I already do. Never shopped at Gap (sorry, Playlist Troll) anyway.

by Anonymousreply 2April 23, 2020 7:31 PM

Goodwill, same as always.

Where is that R2?

by Anonymousreply 4April 23, 2020 7:33 PM

Old Navy and Banana Republic, too?

by Anonymousreply 5April 23, 2020 7:34 PM

I'm an old guy, so it was never my thing. I'm currently liking Duluth Trading for underwear and pants. But with self-isolating, I'm rarely out of sweatpants and lounge wear.

by Anonymousreply 6April 23, 2020 7:35 PM

ever since they changed their sizes I couldn’t wear their clothes anyway. When did a Large stop being a Large??

by Anonymousreply 7April 23, 2020 7:35 PM

R6 - Are the undies from Duluth Trading really that great? Are they as good as UnderArmour?

by Anonymousreply 8April 23, 2020 7:38 PM

I’ll go naked.

by Anonymousreply 9April 23, 2020 7:40 PM

If GAP closes it will be for good!

by Anonymousreply 10April 23, 2020 7:42 PM

Gap has been drowning for a long time now. This is a merciful killing.

Banana Republic is next but Old Navy will continue.

by Anonymousreply 11April 23, 2020 7:42 PM

I'm tall and thin, and would be sorry to see BR (online) fall off the list of resources.

by Anonymousreply 12April 23, 2020 7:47 PM

R8 I've never had any UnderArmour, so I can't make a direct comparison. And I haven't gotten a full range of the underwear from Duluth, so I'm not yet an expert. What I've gotten so far, I've liked. I've been cheap so far and have only bought the ones that have been on clearance, but I'll expand my range as I need them. I really like the pants, and am glad I have a brick-and-mortar store that I was able to try them on instead of ordering online (the sizes seem to run small). Since buying pants in the store, I've ordered the same sizes online and the fit is EXACT every time. I've had other brands where the same size pants could fit differently in the waist and the length from one pair to another.

by Anonymousreply 14April 23, 2020 7:58 PM

My asshole has not closed it’s doors, thank you very much! Research people!

by Anonymousreply 21April 23, 2020 8:29 PM

Who owns The Gap these days? One problem with retail life now is that everything is owned, not by corporations making shit because that's their mission, but owned by investment slush funds whose only purpose is to make lots of money. If they aren't making lots of money, the investment funds pull the money plug and the company dies.

This is also why so many things you buy have increased in price so much in the past 10 years. The companies were bought out by investor funds and they demand top return on their investments.

by Anonymousreply 22April 23, 2020 10:46 PM

Only Old Navy, the Wal Mart of the 3 brands, was selling to anyone. BR was making some sales to petites and Asians a a few yuppies and GAP has been a zombie since the 90s. I am predicting a few chains and, definitely department stores that have been in the red forever, will become obsolete. This virus was the straw that broke the camel's back. When eh malls finally re-open, there will be major changes over the next year.

by Anonymousreply 23April 23, 2020 11:25 PM

Melania is closing?

by Anonymousreply 24April 23, 2020 11:59 PM

Old Navy is not doing well.

But Gap and its siblings are not closing down.

Affordable?? Oh my sides!

That’s the problem with GAP. I’m not going to pay $30 for a T-Shirt and $75 for a button down when you can find the same styles AND quality at Target.

I used to shop at GAP all the time in the 90’s. The looks were fun and the prices were more than reasonable. It wasn’t dirt cheap, but you weren’t going to break the bank either.

GAP has really been struggling with its identity/aesthetic for the past decade+ and meanwhile prices continued to rise, rise, rise. A deadly combo.

by Anonymousreply 38April 24, 2020 2:13 AM

A dead hooker.

by Anonymousreply 39April 24, 2020 2:25 AM

The Gap really had its moments in the late 80s and early 90s, but then it had passed.

by Anonymousreply 40April 24, 2020 2:37 AM

Gap was most successful in 1998-2000 by far. Highest sales ever.

by Anonymousreply 41April 24, 2020 2:39 AM

WHAT!!? The Bonton is still open right? This CV thing has gone on long enough. What about Merry-Go-Round? I was just thinking about getting some slacks and tops at Chess King this weekend, maybe one of those skinny keyboard neckties. I haven't been to the mall in a few years, I'm sure it's still doing fine and not a tumbleweed infested boarded up shanty town.

by Anonymousreply 42April 24, 2020 2:42 AM

R3, I swear to dog, I was just trying to calculate the odds of my favorite Goodwill surviving this. Over the years, I’ve gotten to know the employees there, and it breaks my heart that they’re not working. And I miss the fun and the treasures, too.

Also sorry for any business that is suffering because of this fucking scourge.

by Anonymousreply 43April 24, 2020 2:44 AM

r43 Businesses are suffering because of Merica. Completely closing a hyper-capitalist society for three months because we don't have a health care system? Putting every small business, Mom and Pop store out of business, funneling even more money into Amazon, which is now essentially a "company store" for all Americans.

In 70 years they aren't gonna praise Americans like the British during the blitz of WW2, for defeating the scourge of Coronovirus. They're gonna say we started a great depression, and destroyed our way of life forever because we were scared of a new highly contagious flu, had no leadership, education, or health care. Divided into shit-talking enclaves were burned down the house, simply because most Americans can't read a peer-reviewed paper (or even know what one is), and believed a weird orange reality star/real estate huckster President, a scarf lady, and a prognosticating elf who talked to us like we are 7 year olds.

by Anonymousreply 53April 26, 2020 2:22 AM

Nordstrom. But I suspect GAP didn't pay rent because they recognized that they can play the CV card to file bankruptcy, get out of the leases of the worst non-performing stores, reorganize after downsizing, and be back in business until they destroy themselves again.

If that happens, the GapPlaylistsGuy will most likely grab an AK-47 and go on a shooting spree.

by Anonymousreply 61April 26, 2020 3:21 AM

I used to love the Gap's size-consistency. If you knew you wore size 33/30 Gap jeans, you could LITERALLY run into the Gap on your way to the airport to fly to a 4-week cruise, by 4 pairs of 33/30 jeans without bothering to try them on, and know with absolute confidence that each one would fit perfectly... just like the last 14 pairs of 33/30 jeans you bought from Gap.

Oh, and Gap USED to pre-shrink their fabric BEFORE cutting it, so it didn't randomly fucking shrink after washing like Levi's did.

Sadly, those days are no more. Sometime in the early 00s, Gap became as bad as Levi's (where 7 pairs of nominally-identical jeans all fit differently... and the ones that DO fit WON'T fit after the first wash). Now, I just buy jeans from Walmart. Wrangler's size-consistency isn't as good as Gap's WAS, but is better than Gap-today & Levi's, and is cheap enough to not be the end of the world if a pair doesn't fit after washing.

Fuck, I miss 1990s Gap.

Oh, and I miss J. Riggings, too... their clothes literally disintegrated in the wash, but they were cheap enough to wear 3 times & not CARE, and were basically Hilfiger & Polo knock-offs. I shopped there 2-3x/week in college, and ultimately owned probably 20% of everything they sold in at least one color.

by Anonymousreply 62April 26, 2020 3:43 AM

[quote] so it didn't randomly fucking shrink after washing like Levi's did.

Er, you obviously have never purchased a pair of Levi's jeans. They will absolutely, positively NEVER fit the same way after you've washed and dried them as they do at the store. Gap's shrinkage isn't quite as bad or random as Levi's, but it's still frustrating as hell to have to try on 17 pairs of jeans spanning 3 nominal waist sizes and 2 or 3 nominal inseam lengths to try and find one or two pairs that actually fit, then try to guess to extent to which they'll shrink anyway. Fuck that shit. It's insane. There's no excuse for not getting the fabric on the bolt to shrink as much as it's GOING to shrink BEFORE they cut and sew it into jeans.

R38 is right. Target has upped the ante with 100 percent cottons and collections for the masses from the likes of Missoni and Lagerfeld. Why bother with the Gap? When I purchase more expensive clothes, I can go to Lucky, Nordstrom rack (same stuff) or try my luck at TJ Max. Why bother with a 39 dollar t-shirt in a store where they haven't noticed the 90's are over.

The economy is bad for clothes related businesses. We drove by a dry cleaning place and she was out there with a huge sandwich board flagging people down. Suddenly I realized I haven’t worn a pressed shirt in months.

by Anonymousreply 79May 9, 2020 8:52 AM

Everyone shops at Zara now. The gap died years ago.

by Anonymousreply 80May 9, 2020 9:09 AM

50 years old. I forgot that Gap had been around forever.

Never liked their clothes. Occasionally something would look good at a distance but the details never held up. Shirts were always cut oddly and oversized, puffing out for a big guy that, in my case, wasn't there: make maternity shirts; button placement and other details would be "off." But it didn't matter because you could never buy anything there without seeing the same thing worn everywhere.

My only Gap success: a $9 close-out sale pair of jeans in an odd tan color a very un-Gap subtly herringbone sort of weave that fit perfectly and lasted years as one of my favorites.

by Anonymousreply 81May 9, 2020 9:09 AM

by Anonymousreply 82May 9, 2020 9:14 AM

They opened a NEW bookstore near me in London in the train station. It lasted about 6 months.

by Anonymousreply 83May 9, 2020 11:41 AM

When I first bought clothes at GAP, I was wearing size 8. But two years ago when I last bought from them, I wore size 4. So their customers have been getting more and more obese apparently. Maybe their customers no longer shop there because they are dead.

by Anonymousreply 84May 9, 2020 11:48 AM

Ah the Gap. My first boyfriend worked there, 1999, he got me employee discounts on their crappy clothes. Actually, I have a few things from the Gap that I've had for years and love, but most things from them have been trash for a long time, cheapest-quality materials and dyes. And their whole aesthetic is so outdated. They didn't change with the times, now they fail.
