You know, like it did for AIDS?
Why doesn’t America call Covid God’s punishment?

It's only killing the blacks. Therefore it is God's punishment of the blacks.

There are plenty of Christian leaders who are calling it "God's" punishment for this or that. You're just not paying attention.

It's God's punishment for going to a church.

Why does god hate America so much while the socialist democracies get away relatively unscathed?????

Because white people dance with glee when POCs die. Covid-19 id bio-genocide.

R5 No they don't. Stop hating yourself and others.

One evangelist said that Co-Ved 19 signals the End Times.

r6, Every MAGAt protest is just that. I disagree.
And I do not hate myself, I love most GWM.

OP, "America" did not call AIDS "God's punishment"; a segment of conservative religious believers did. Pretty much the same ones calling Covid-19 "God's punishment" - [italic]and[/italic] with the same object of hatred - LGBTs.

In 1987, during the height of the AIDS epidemic, 43 percent of Americans surveyed said the disease might be God’s punishment for immoral behavior, according to the Pew Research Center.
This was conventional wisdom R9. Many of the other 47 percent felt that it was NATURE's punishment for anal sex. Regardless, it WAS a topic of polls, watercooler discussions and EVERY church and family. Everyone had an opinion. Today? Nothing. Not even worth discussing.
I am fascinated that HIV, SARS, MERS, EBOLA and COVID 19 all came from eating animals and I have NEVER heard of one person say. "Hey, maybe it's god's punishment for eating animals"

It would be nice if the religious weirdos said covid was God's punishment for not believing in climate change. But I doubt that will happen.

God is the peoples' punishment for being superstitious idiots.

Fortunately, some of them end up getting sick, which pretty much shuts them up (in some cases, permanently).

Thanks, R10. The younger folks here don't know what that era was like, so thanks for educating them.
I'm a lesbian who went on a diet/exercise regimen in the late 80s and lost about 80 lbs. (and kept it off, thank you!). I was (and still am) out to everyone, and it was rumored at my workplace that I had lost the weight because I had AIDS. I couldn't believe it. But that's how stupid and paranoid straight people were in the 80s.
And it seemed as though most of the straight people I knew (in south central PA) believed that it was god's punishment.

Covid comes on little cat feet. It sits looking over harbor and city on silent haunches and then moves in.
Changed Sandburg's poem a little bit, but it's still about nature's indifference to humanity. It's a virus, technically it's not alive, it just finds hosts and replicates.

The evangelicals are - they are blaming it on gay marriage.

I've seen it blamed on abortions

Pat Robertson blames abortion and gay marriage.

If there was a God, Pat Robertson would get COVID-19 and die.

R9 is flat out wrong as R10 points out.

^Thank you. Furthermore, the evilgelicals casual and callous disregard for the lives of the elderly DEMANDS that we call them out for being pro- abortion. They are They are in favor of ABORTING the lives of the elderly in order to save the economy; Aborting the golden years of the greatest generation in order to spend their inheritances TAX FREE. The GOP governors are playing GOD, calling for DEATH PANALS to open the economy and ABORTING the lives of our elders for their love of money. Fuck these evil, greedy, racist whores and speak their language.
My husband just came inside with tears in his eyes, the owner of the hardware store on the corner died and the owner of the pet shop across the street is on a ventilator. I'm feeling too much rage to be sad right now. Goddamn them all to hell. I'm going to take a walk (to the kitchen to mix a martini) and clear my head. Be well all.

R10, the constituency being measured was still [italic] the religious[/italic], not all of America. The conservative religious were more influential; their numbers are diminishing now. My point was that it's the same basic constituency that claims pretty much *everything* is punishment from God - earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, tornadoes, various illnesses, etc - typically with the addition that it's because people tolerate homosexuality.

Perhaps you don't know the right collection of crazy people. PETA members and other animal rights activist tend to reach for that explanation, as do Seventh Day Adventists. I heard it quite frequently in the 90s, when 'Mad Cow', aka Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, was scaring everyone. I even heard it said that was God's judgement on Reagan, whose terminal dementia was speculated to be caused by Mad Cow.
