HELL YES! He should have done this day one of his presidency.

He has been waiting for an excuse to do this since day 1.

He'll have forgotten by tomorrow, but this is just throwing red meat to his base, since a lot of them aren't too happy about how he's handled the coronavirus.

[QUOTE] A meaningless gesture that will excite his base.
Cue the outcry from liberal immigrant rights groups and legal challenges from the ACLU. Dem congressional leadership tweeting their disapproval. Nonstop outrage on MSNBC and CNN with their pencil neck legal experts opining that it won’t hold up in court. This is what the base feed offs of. If everyone ignored it or went along with it, they’d be distraught. They need to see Trump own the libs! Here’s a shiny new object for cable news and the blogosphere so they can stop talking about the fact that April is almost over and the administration still doesn’t have its shit together on Coronavirus testing.

by Anonymous | reply 20 | April 21, 2020 3:13 AM |
About a million people immigrate here every year you elitist trash bag R9.
“America SUCKS no one likes us!!!” Yeah ok. Tell that to the HUGE backlogs of people waiting for their visa number to be called, especially from the big 4 countries: Mexico, Philippinea, India, and China.
These people can wait DECADES based on their category.
It may be nice for you in Palo Alto or wherever you are to be so nonchalant, but people literally die waiting to come here. But you’re probably one of the “lock everything down forever!” crowd, so what do you care?

by Anonymous | reply 32 | April 21, 2020 5:53 AM |
Anything Trump does is to distract. The only ones who don't see that are the Deplorables singing and dancing towards the edge thinking they own Liberals that way. I'd say just give them a "so long, goodbye" wave.

He’s not sending anyone home. Stop with the fantasies. Once the smoke clears and we start to see all the fine print and disclaimers and exceptions that he was forced to add later, we’ll probably end up with MORE Indian tech workers in the end.

by Anonymous | reply 77 | April 21, 2020 6:19 PM |
Anyone suggesting this will get Trump re-elected isn't thinking very clearly.
First, like the rest of Trump's "bans", it will be riddled with loopholes, exceptions, special circumstances and set-asides, mostly for rich people to have their gardeners, cleaners and au-pairs. And just like his China travel ban, which allowed 40,000 people to still come into the US from China [italic]after[/italic] the ban was enacted, which helped bring in thousands of infected individuals, there will be no real controls on who is allowed and who is not... aside from their skin color.
Second, we're about to head into (and some regions are already there) prime crop-picking season. Farmers are already screaming about a lack of available labor. Without low-paid immigrants, the crops will be left to die and rot in the fields, unless, of course, those hard-working Americans get up off their fat asses and... hahahahaha hahaha haha, who am I kidding. Goodbye, fresh fruits and vegetables; hello to the third (or is it the fourth?) multi-billion dollar bailout of farmers. Millennials and younger folks take note: this is how Trump is spending your retirements.
Third, blocking immigrants simply means that we're turning away the best and the brightest the world has to offer. Sure, there's an overwhelming amount of low-paid undocumented immigrants — they always get the attention — but if you've been to any hospital, medical facility, tech company, college or university, you'll soon realize that the rest of the world sends their overachievers here for education and gaining the kinds of experience that one can only achieve in a first world nation.
Here's the problem, and why I think that this ban is going to bite Trump on his ample derriere: we're heading into the most critical period of the pandemic. Just as the sheltering is showing results, the deplorables are agitating for their freedumb, which is going to bend the curve in the opposite direction. As red state governors re-open their economies, it will take 3 to 4 weeks, and hospital emergency room will again be overrun, and the problem is compounded by the fact that there is still a shortage of PPE, equipment and facilities; and all of those first responders and front line caregivers will be sick themselves, or so exhausted and demoralized that they give up, and not necessarily by choice.
Trump has done nothing to shore up the food supply chain. We're about to have fresh meat shortages as the reality of just how filthy, disgusting and unregulated the conditions the meat packing industry operates under comes to light; conditions that are largely hidden by the fact that roughly half of the workers in these plants are undocumented and afraid to speak out, particularly as Trump ramps up the xenophobia. By the middle of June, the shortages of fresh fruits and vegetables will begin. By July, the states that have refused to act responsibly will be on their knees begging the Federal government for help, but no worries, Trump is clearly not doing the planning [italic]now[/italic] that saving them [italic]then[/italic] will require.
By August, as we shelter-in-place again (and for some, it will just be a continuation) it will become apparent unemployment is going to stay at Depression-era levels because the people who can afford to dine out, attend high-priced sporting and entertainment events, and travel — while not working — are not leaving their homes. Restaurants, bars, venues, hotels and the airlines are not going to go on hiring binges without the customers to pay for it. Besides that, the shortages of food — and healthy workers — will prevent any large scale rebounding of the economy.
The point is that we're witnessing the collapse of our way of life because we have incompetent leaders (at least at the Federal level and in conservative states) who are going to be twisting in the wind as the crisis worsens... and people head to the polls.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | April 21, 2020 6:47 PM |
