Adam Schiff: Russia Is Still Interfering With US Elections—and Trump Is Covering It Up

The Intelligence Committee chair says the president is holding back information.

The Russian government attacked the 2016 election to help Donald Trump. In the years since, various intelligence officials have publicly stated that Vladimir Putin intends to intervene again in the 2020 election. But Trump doesn’t want to hear that—and doesn’t want the public to know that. Days after intelligence officials in February told House lawmakers during a classified briefing that Russia was already interfering in this year’s election and once again preferred Trump, an irate Trump ousted acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire and replaced him with a loyalist. In an interview with Mother Jones, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), chair of the House Intelligence Committee, says that since then the Trump administration has been covering up intelligence on Russian interference.

Schiff notes that the danger of foreign intervention in the election “predominantly comes from Russia. They have never really stopped being at it, in terms of their social media campaign.” A big problem, he points out, is that the US intelligence community, under Trump, cannot be relied upon to highlight and combat this threat: “We cannot count on the intelligence community to speak truth to power, to inform the Congress and the American people about what we’re seeing in terms of Russian interference.” The Maguire firing, Schiff says, was a sign that Trump will not allow the intelligence community to share with Congress information about Russian interference. “Since that time,” Schiff remarks, “I think what we’ve been briefed [on foreign intervention in the election] has been dumbed down.” He adds, “We’ve already since seen Director Maguire was fired, in the briefing that we’ve had since and in our access to information since, a real constriction of frank and candid information about what the Russians are doing…It’s already had that impact. Now even before Maguire was fired, there were materials that we had been requesting that we knew were in existence that had been compiled for us that they were refusing to turn over.” These materials, Schiff says, related to Russian efforts to intervene directly in the US election and through Ukraine: “We’ve seen interconnection between Russian efforts to interfere through social media in our election and Russian efforts to interfere potentially through third countries like Ukraine.”

Schiff, who led the House Democrats’ impeachment effort against Trump, now doubts that the intelligence community will keep Congress fully informed on Russian intervention. Noting his admiration for the workforce of the intelligence community, he says, “Sadly, I think the intelligence agencies may have been among the last to fall in the sense of succumbing to pressure by the Trump administration. But they, like so many other departments and agencies, now are not as forthcoming as they had been, and I think that places the country at greater risk.”

Schiff says it will be tough for the Democrats alone to thwart another Russian attack on another US election. “It is going to require,” he says, “people of good faith within the GOP to devote themselves to protecting our democracy, not this cult of personality around this president. Maybe the pandemic will bring this about or maybe it won’t. It’s a very difficult job for one party to do.”

There's already been repeated thread after repeated thread on this OP. Why did you find it necessary to come here and start another? Why? Why OP? Can you give us an intelligent, honest answer? Can you? Why would you come here and post this kind of shit yet AGAIN when there have already been so many prior threads on this EXACT same subject. Do you really think this is that damned interesting that it warrants another entire thread to be started? DO YOU??

Why couldn't you have done a search first OP? That would have been the polite thing to do. What you demonstrated was just plain selfishness. You have shown that you don't think about anybody but yourself. It's all about you and your own satisfaction. Next time before you post, do us all a favor and do a search. We don't need another duplicate thread just because of your laziness.

by Anonymousreply 9April 21, 2020 7:49 PM

The 24/7 media focus on Covid-19 is permitting a lot of underhanded shit to sneak by. Rachel Maddow needs to confine her Covid updates to a single segment, perhaps a quarter of her show, but devote the rest back to Trump and the Russians. Things are continuing to happen.

by Anonymousreply 10April 22, 2020 4:59 AM

Sometimes a poster will be able to post the entire Maddow episodes but I can only find clips.

If you’re out there, a link to Tuesday’s full show would be terrific.

Not a "top priority," R22 - maintaining a presence in Western social media is simply something they're doing. Look how it's paid off - they managed to co-opt the leadership of the Free World by getting a Russian asset elected president of the US, and many other Western democracies are now in jeopardy. Pound for pound, dollar for dollar, ruble for ruble, propaganda internet trolling has been the least expensive, most effective program Russia has ever engaged in. They're still hard at it, and there's zero incentive for them to stop.

So it boils down to "Russian efforts to interfere through social media".

So if you want to hold someone responsible, shouldn't that be Facebook? Their platform is the one that publishes this stuff. Why no mention of them? How could any of this be stopped without holding Facebook responsible?

Furthermore, those ads at R27. Oh c'mon. They're a minuscule drop in the cesspool that is Facebook. What about all the similar home-grown ads?

I just have to laugh at the ads posted at R27. Is that the best the Russians could do? "Keep Country an Stay Redneck"? LOL.

by Anonymousreply 51April 24, 2020 6:01 PM

Here's how to spot Right-Wing dissension trolls like R48:

[quote]Twenty-Five Rules of Disinformation

[quote]Become incredulous and indignant. Avoid discussing key issues and instead focus on side issues which can be used show the topic as being critical of some otherwise sacrosanct group or theme. This is also known as the 'How dare you!' gambit.

[quote]Use a straw man. Find or create a seeming element of your opponent's argument which you can easily knock down to make yourself look good and the opponent to look bad. Either make up an issue you may safely imply exists based on your interpretation of the opponent/opponent arguments/situation, or select the weakest aspect of the weakest charges. Amplify their significance and destroy them in a way which appears to debunk all the charges, real and fabricated alike, while actually avoiding discussion of the real issues.

[quote]Sidetrack opponents with name calling and ridicule. This is also known as the primary 'attack the messenger' ploy, though other methods qualify as variants of that approach. Associate opponents with unpopular titles such as 'kooks', 'right-wing', 'liberal', 'left-wing', 'terrorists', 'conspiracy buffs', 'radicals', 'militia', 'racists', 'religious fanatics', 'sexual deviates', and so forth. This makes others shrink from support out of fear of gaining the same label, and you avoid dealing with issues.

[quote]Hit and Run. In any public forum, make a brief attack of your opponent or the opponent position and then scamper off before an answer can be fielded, or simply ignore any answer. This works extremely well in Internet and letters-to-the-editor environments where a steady stream of new identities can be called upon without having to explain criticism, reasoning -- simply make an accusation or other attack, never discussing issues, and never answering any subsequent response, for that would dignify the opponent's viewpoint.

[quote]Question motives. Twist or amplify any fact which could be taken to imply that the opponent operates out of a hidden personal agenda or other bias. This avoids discussing issues and forces the accuser on the defensive.

[quote]Associate opponent charges with old news. A derivative of the straw man -- usually, in any large-scale matter of high visibility, someone will make charges early on which can be or were already easily dealt with - a kind of investment for the future should the matter not be so easily contained.) Where it can be foreseen, have your own side raise a straw man issue and have it dealt with early on as part of the initial contingency plans. Subsequent charges, regardless of validity or new ground uncovered, can usually then be associated with the original charge and dismissed as simply being a rehash without need to address current issues -- so much the better where the opponent is or was involved with the original source.

[quote]Emotionalize, Antagonize, and Goad Opponents. If you can't do anything else, chide and taunt your opponents and draw them into emotional responses which will tend to make them look foolish and overly motivated, and generally render their material somewhat less coherent. Not only will you avoid discussing the issues in the first instance, but even if their emotional response addresses the issue, you can further avoid the issues by then focusing on how 'sensitive they are to criticism.'

In what way can the US government target disinformation campaigns without also infringing on the rights of peoples' freedom of speech and right to privacy? If companies like Google and Facebook are implementing faulty algorithms, how is the federal government going to fare any better?

r86, Trump, personally, owes China hundreds of millions of dollars. The second he's out of the White House, he's going to be hit with both NYS and Federal felony charges. He cannot repay their generous loans, not the even larger loans he owes Russia, from a prison cell.

This has been posted somewhere else, but it could be posted in here too:

Staline built his power when he was in his mid-to-late thirties, then held it until he died. He was 74 years old.

Ceaușescu got to power when he was about 50. He stayed in power for twenty years, then was executed by his own people. He was 71 years old.

Mussolini took power around age 40 and stayed there for about 20 years. In 1945, he ended up killed and his corpse brutalized. At 61 years old.

The thing is, Trump was elected in November 2016 at already 70 years of age. In a couple months he turns 74. All I'm saying is, he's getting a bit long in the tooth.

by Anonymousreply 96April 28, 2020 4:15 PM

The reason any type of legislation will fail is 1) Second hand and thirdhand sources will still be there purporting false information and conspiracy theories. How do you differentiate those knowingly spreading propaganda from those who are simply misinformed and too lazy to critically assess what they are reading? It becomes even more difficult if its US citizens posting this information 2) Most companies don't want to be accused of political bias because it affects their bottom line. Facebook has been trying to tread a fine line, but their algorithms have flagged both Trump and Bernie supporters so it's problematic to say the least. 3) The sources uses to fact check stories have to demonstrate complete lack of bias, yet we are in an era where establishment media organizations state their political bias upfront making fact check an excruciating process. 4) Those who do seek to plant false stories overseas suffer absolutely no consequences

If there was a way to effectively regulate the internet without interfering with peoples' freedoms, then there would no child prostitution rings, homegrown terrorism, arms sales, all going on right this minute somewhere in the dark web.

by Anonymousreply 108April 28, 2020 7:53 PM

For those joining this thread late (and to save scrolling) here is the OP's post. This the what the trolls don't want you to read (or watch). Bump this thread!

Now even before Maguire was fired, there were materials that we had been requesting that we knew were in existence that had been compiled for us that they were refusing to turn over.” These materials, Schiff says, related to Russian efforts to intervene directly in the US election and through Ukraine: “We’ve seen interconnection between Russian efforts to interfere through social media in our election and Russian efforts to interfere potentially through third countries like Ukraine.” Schiff, who led the House Democrats’ impeachment effort against Trump, now doubts that the intelligence community will keep Congress fully informed on Russian intervention. Noting his admiration for the workforce of the intelligence community, he says, “Sadly, I think the intelligence agencies may have been among the last to fall in the sense of succumbing to pressure by the Trump administration. But they, like so many other departments and agencies, now are not as forthcoming as they had been, and I think that places the country at greater risk.” Schiff says it will be tough for the Democrats alone to thwart another Russian attack on another US election. “It is going to require,” he says, “people of good faith within the GOP to devote themselves to protecting our democracy, not this cult of personality around this president. Maybe the pandemic will bring this about or maybe it won’t. It’s a very difficult job for one party to do.”

I don’t know about Russian interference, but I do know that this country’s democracy is being held hostage by the electoral college. In the last election the other candidate won the popular vote by THREE MILLION, yet was not elected. It’s bullshit. In “freedom”-loving U.S.A. one person does not equal one vote.

How exactly? Can we please see some concrete examples?

I knew we shouldn't have trusted that crook Mueller. This thing is bigger than any of us imagined! If only the media like CNN and MSNBC weren't in the tank for Trump and would give Schiff a chance to present his evidence!

R115 Miller did his job. Bill Barr was the crook we couldn't trust. He ended the investigation prematurely, (deliberately), and "misinterpreted" the findings. (He lied through his big fat teeth!)..... I don't understand how the dems let him get away with it.

How is asking for examples "trolling", R137?

by Anonymousreply 138April 30, 2020 5:24 PM

R138 There is evidence that Russia interfered, however there is no concrete evidence that their efforts cost Hillary the election. There is also evidence that their ultimate goal was to sow division in both parties. Any federal intervention for more internet regulation or going to war, is dangerous.

"There is evidence that Russia interfered, however there is no concrete evidence that their efforts cost Hillary the election. "

What about just about every foreign policy decision Trump has made since taking office? Almost none of them make sense when considering what's best for this country. But if you assume Trump is not working for us, that his is working for Putin, every single decision makes sense.

R152, They surveyed Trump supporters in FL and found that 25% agreed that Hillary was a demon, literally a demon raised up from hell. Ads like that probably had something to do with that result. Facebook has too much influence over some people.

We know the Russians penetrated our voting systems in every state in 2016. As far as we could tell they didn't change any votes, as far as we can tell. They 100% interfered with our election in 2016 and continue to do so with the apparent approval of the Trump administration.

I should have said the Russians targeted election systems in all 50 states rather than penetrated. We don't actually know how many systems were penetrated.

[quote] The Senate Intelligence Committee concluded Thursday that election systems in all 50 states were targeted by Russia in 2016, largely undetected by the states and federal officials at the time, but at the demand of American intelligence agencies the committee was forced to redact its findings so heavily that key lessons for the 2020 election are blacked out.

[quote] While details of many of the hackings directed by Russian intelligence, particularly in Illinois and Arizona, are well known, the committee’s report describes a Russian intelligence effort more far-reaching than the federal government has previously acknowledged. It concluded that while there is no evidence that any votes were changed in actual voting machines, “Russian cyberactors were in a position to delete or change voter data” in the Illinois voter database. The committee found no evidence that they did so. While the report is not directly critical of either American intelligence agencies or the states, it described what amounted to a cascading intelligence failure, in which the scope of the Russian effort was underestimated, warnings to the states were too muted, and state officials either underreacted or, in some cases, resisted federal efforts to offer help.

Oh please.

Long before Russians, the word was that Hillary is a murderer, a pedophile, a whole long list of things.

And if you ask those who despise her "is Hillary a Demon?" of course people are going to laugh and say "Yes!"

Just as you would if someone asked you "is Trump a Demon?" ...you'd laugh and answer "Hell Yes!" too.

by Anonymousreply 157May 1, 2020 3:02 AM

So, I should have said targeted, rather than penetrated. We actually don't know how many system they successfully penetrated or what they did once they got in there.

There's no evidence of that.

by Anonymousreply 160May 1, 2020 3:05 AM

R157, so why did you ask for a link if you were just going to dismiss the link out of hand? Why even bother asking for a link if you weren't actually interested?

by Anonymousreply 161May 1, 2020 3:06 AM

And I said twice I used the wrong word. We don't actually know how many system they penetrated or what they did because we didn't know they did it. Besides that, this thread is about them interfering with our elections. Are you just going to bald face deny what the Russians did?

I highly recommend you guys do the ignore trick on some of our posters like this guy here, because it's illuminating. Every single one of the "Russians aren't really trolling Datalounge" people are also posting about ending the shutdown and claiming the virus isn't that bad, it's just the flu. Several of them also try really hard to start fights with individuals in an attempt to distract, and when one starts a stupid thread (on, say, some news that's a month old that they're trying to claim is new) another one shows up to try to stir up shit and get a flamewar going.

My experience on Twitter is that these are just the usual tactics and topics that any rightwing troll uses, whether it's Bubba Joe from South Indiana who thinks astroturfing the internet will win the election, or a more concerted disinformation effort. No idea if it's Russia anymore, because every troll on earth learned from the GamerGater and Russian troll playbooks, and now they all act the same way.

by Anonymousreply 176May 4, 2020 1:03 PM

I guess you're willing to admit that people who are not foreign actors may have a different opinion than you. That's progress I guess. However, trying to paint everyone with the same brush is a gaslighting tactic.

[quote] Every single one of the "Russians aren't really trolling Datalounge" people are also posting about ending the shutdown and claiming the virus isn't that bad, it's just the flu.

In reality, I haven't argued any of the above. In fact, I argued for stricter enforcement of stay at home orders.
