I don’t know where you got your information but it’s entirely false. I have never “thrown a fit” or encouraged any other students to do anything. r149, you DO realize that MRSA can be, and is, 100% curable... it's just not curable with monotherapies of conventional antibiotics (like, say, methycillin). It's no more infectious or dangerous than "regular" staph infections were prior to antibiotics. Pre-antibiotics, a staph infection was kind of like C19... no good magic cure, but most people had them and got over them just fine anyway.

In any case, sometime around 2015 MRSA became readily curable again using cocktails of new and old drugs. Mild cases are now routinely cured using Bactrim (trimethoprim + sulfamethoxazole), and cocktails of other drugs (some new, some resurrected after being written off as useless decades ago, and some merely combinations of old ones) are able to routinely cure even more advanced cases. Basically, it's no longer something that can be trivially wiped out with a single antibiotic, but it's no longer something that could plausibly cause loss of life or limb as long as you don't wait until it literally progresses to the point of blood poisoning or gangrene.

In fact, due to all the attention MRSA has gotten over the past decade, you're probably MORE likely to survive a staph infection today with life and limbs intact. Pre-MRSA, staph infections didn't get a lot of attention... methycillin wasn't a nice drug, and it didn't work 100% of the time, but it worked well enough for there to be little interest in improving upon it. The research that went into finding new cures for MRSA *also* led to improved treatments for ALL staph infections, MRSA or not.

So no, Jack is not a "reservoir" of MRSA, and you're just making yourself look like an ignorant, scientifically-illerate prick by even suggesting it as a possibility.

On a side note, C19 might very well be the spark that leads us to finding effective antiviral treatments for the viruses associated with "common colds". At some point with all the research being done now, someone is going to do secondary analyses of the data collected in all these studies, and notice that one or more of the meds being tested for C19 happens to also work against viruses like RSV, parainfluenza, rhinovirus, picornavirus, etc. My prediction is that within 10 years, we probably WILL see an antiviral drug that can be used (officially, or at least off-label) to effectively wipe out most common respiratory viral infections at least as well as Tamiflu does now (as in, "works if you take it at the first sniffle, but mostly useless if you wait until the viral part has already run its course & you're now suffering congestion and pneumonia due to the body's own immune response to it"). It'll probably be too expensive for most people to take for the next 15 years, but the days of waking up with a runny nose or scratchy throat the week after Thanksgiving & knowing your December has just been fried & likely to suck will finally start coming to an end.
