Apollonia Kotero Slams Sheila E. Over Prince Tribute ‘Lemon Cake’

Purple Rain star Apollonia Kotero slammed Prince collaborator Sheila E. in a social media post following the release of Sheila E.’s Prince tribute song “Lemon Cake” earlier this week.

“Lemon Cake” arrived a week before the Let’s Go Crazy: The Grammy Salute to Prince special, featuring Sheila E., airs on April 21st. The drummer also took part in the Grammys’ tribute to Prince in February.

In an interview with Billboard after the release of “Lemon Cake,” “The Glamorous Life” singer said, “One day I mentioned to him that I make a good chocolate and lemon cake. His response was, ‘Oh, I didn’t know you cooked.’ I said, ‘Of course I do. My mom being Creole and my dad Mexican, I better know how to cook.’ The next day I baked a lemon cake. It was love at first sight and one of his favorite things that we would share in the studio.”

“You are so desperate to be RELEVANT as the brilliant Linda Perry said. Prince refused to acknowledge you for 5 years before his death because of your lies,” Kotero wrote of Sheila E. on Facebook (via Okayplayer). “You can’t continue to fool our Prince fans any longer. Because I AM here to tell you, it’s over. Time for the truth.”

In her Facebook post, Kotero accused Sheila E. of profiting off Prince’s name and trademark, including accusations that Sheila E. held Prince-themed benefit concerts for music schools that never came to fruition.

“Prince was so angry because of all your continuous lies. Your bio filled with lies. He sent you legal letters as you were slandering him. I have copies and will include them in my memoirs. You need to stop using Prince in death. You need to stop using Purple Rain as a vehicle. YOU ARE NOT ON OUR CAST LIST,” Kotero wrote.

A rep for Sheila E. did not respond to Rolling Stone’s request for comment.

“Why would you do a Purple Rain boat cruise tour $?$? in 2016? Why would you sell Prince logo tshirts $$$ ?,” Kotero continued. “Why did you tell The Revolution April 2016 that YOU knew how Prince died BUT you could not tell them!?! Please get over yourself: YOU ARE NOT PRINCE. You will never be. You can copy his attire , try your best, but you will NEVER be Prince.

“So get over yourself sad self and face the truth. He did not want anything to do with you for 5 years. You erased all that history by being your desperate egotistical self. Egotistical empty sad desperate for money. Money will not get you to Heaven. Time to come out and tell the truth.”

Isn't Appollonia a fundie now? Or is that one of his other ones? There was a long line of them over 40 years...

by Anonymousreply 7April 19, 2020 3:43 PM

R7, I think that was Vanity.

Prince probably encouraged strife amongst his harem of half-breeds.

I had no idea that Prince and Sheila E. had a falling out.

i thought they had remained friends. This is news to me.

by Anonymousreply 15April 19, 2020 3:51 PM

Apollonia is an absolute fundie lunatic. A few years ago she posted the oddest rambling video about God and saviors and the shame of her sinful past, and she tried to convert all those from her past, etc.

by Anonymousreply 16April 19, 2020 3:51 PM

[quote]Prince refused to acknowledge you for 5 years before his death because of your lies,”

I don't know about the rest of Apollonia's allegations but I saw Prince in 2011 when he did his residency at The Forum and Sheila E. performed with him the night I attended and if I remember correctly, a few other nights. As he died in 2016, this one doesn't hold water.

by Anonymousreply 17April 19, 2020 3:53 PM

And this is all you need to know about Appollonia -

"Former Prince protege and longtime friend Apollonia Kotero said the Purple One had major plans for her before his untimely death in 2016, including new music, a possible film and even a book to follow-up his upcoming memoir." - 2019

Yeah right. Team Sheila E - this was the easiest decision I've ever had to make.

by Anonymousreply 18April 19, 2020 3:59 PM

Apollonia's sole skill was having a tight fartbox

by Anonymousreply 19April 19, 2020 4:05 PM

If Apollonia is THIS angry, then her own efforts to make money from her own association with Prince must be falling short.

by Anonymousreply 20April 19, 2020 4:17 PM

Prince had a type, no?

by Anonymousreply 31April 20, 2020 12:43 AM

Apollonia was the female lead in Purple Rain, R31. The one who purified herself in the waters of Lake Minnetonka (but not really).

I never would have dreamed back in junior high that in 2020 I'd be reading about Apollonia and Sheila E.

by Anonymousreply 32April 20, 2020 12:54 AM

The other poster is correct - Shelia E has been performing with Prince up until 2015 - if there was bad blood I am not sure when it happened. Plus it is Appolonia - she is fucking nuts.

by Anonymousreply 33April 20, 2020 1:02 AM

r33 Then if that's true i wish Shelia E would have responded with some facts instead of no comment.

While Apollonia is largely forgotten except for Prince devotees.

Sheila E is at least a musician and songwriter. Apollonia was a terrible singer, even worse than Vanity which isn’t saying much but still, the record company and Prince knew Apollonia 6 would never go anywhere and there was no new music. Her acting was wooden, but what she had going for her was she was beautiful- although not as beautiful as Vanity.

Sheila E can make her own dime performing and producing. She’s from a big musical family and her father was part of Santana and her brother is a successful touring/studio musician and the birth father of Nicole Richie.

by Anonymousreply 41April 20, 2020 1:47 AM

Appollonia does make one good point. Of all the extended members of the Prince musical family Shelia more than anyone else has been working non-stop for four years to cash in on his death. That's her right though. They all made peanuts when working for him supposedly. I don't blame her.

by Anonymousreply 42April 20, 2020 2:02 AM

If only Vanity were still alive to witness this....

by Anonymousreply 43April 20, 2020 2:09 AM

R30 - yep, she was. But no talent and no real success.

Sheila E was also hot - and had talent and success.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 44April 20, 2020 2:11 AM

She's not "cashing in" on his death. She didn't even speak about it at first. But people/reporters keep asking her about it. She worked with him nonstop from 1984 to about 1990, and then on and off Until 2011.

Pirnce always chose Sheila to perform next to him throughout the years.

They had a falling out around 2011 or2012 when he invited her father's band to open for an LA Welcome 2 America tour and then cancelled on them at the last minute so he could have his new mentor Larry Graham open instead (after they all flew out) and didn't reimburse them.

He did the same to Morris Day & The Time as well.

by Anonymousreply 45April 20, 2020 2:11 AM

[quote]Why did Prince and his groupies all become fundies?

What’s really ironic is how both Prince and Vanity acted holier than thou when they became religious and acted like they were better than everyone, and yet they both died lonely with no real friends or close family in the end.

by Anonymousreply 46April 20, 2020 2:22 AM

Why did Prince's groupies become fundies? Because Prince did.

by Anonymousreply 47April 20, 2020 2:57 AM

Prince had a falling out with EVERYONE.

He was jealous if any of "his" people had success.

Wendy and Lisa gave him EVERYTHING and he fired them willy nilly. He got so jealous when their first album came out that he allegedly bought several copies of the LP and ran over it with his car.

He expected everyone to kowtow to his every whim.

I know the Escovedo family a little. They are very messy, but very close. They aren't loaded that's for sure. Even Pops Escovedo in his 80s is still out there working hard to make a living. I do believe Sheila E. over Apollonia, most certainly. That said, Sheila E. hasn't been shy about drawing upon her history with Prince to help keep the lights on. If anyone from his past "deserves" to do this, I think she does.

They went through a lot together, and he really did respect her as a musician. She's not exactly telling mean stories about him. She could make up all kinds of shit, or spill the beans on a few ugly aspects of his personality that I'm sure his fans would prefer stayed unspilled. Instead, she keeps his memory a rather warm one, and I appreciate that.

Eric Leeds----who played sax for Prince starting on the Purple Rain tour, all the way through the aughts I believe, but best known and seen in Sign of The Times and most of the 80s songs that have sax parts--- posted this today: Hillarious!!!!

Facebook

Eric Leeds 1tSlu3p mounusaisonsiredfg · I've been reading with interest the "conversations" regarding my dear friends Sheila E. and LeRoy Bennett and their baking of Prince's favorite desert, lemon cake. It's little known that ALL of us were required, back in the day, to be able to make this confection for him. Page 13, paragraph four, subsection 2B of my employment agreement with PRN, from the late 80's, reads " Pursuant to this agreement, the party known as the Employee, shall be required to be familiar with the recipe for the confection known as lemon cake, and be able to make such cake at the request of the party known as the Employer (i.e. Prince Rogers Nelson)."

Prince asked me only once to make the lemon cake for him. By happenstance it was the week of Passover, either 1987 or 88, if I remember. So I decided it might be nice to have the cakes blessed by a rabbi for the occasion, after which I proudly presented Prince with my Lemon Kosher Cakes. As it turns out, he liked them so much that for awhile, he actually considered converting to Judaism. As a result, somewhere in the infamous "vault" is a remake of his famous song "The Cross" (from Sign O' The Times) with somewhat altered lyrics and re-titled ...... "The Nosh".........

by Anonymousreply 55April 20, 2020 4:15 PM

That's fucking hilarious, R55.

The story of how the Escovedos were living with Lionel Ritchie in his mansion and let him adopt Nicole Ritchie from them is kind of weird. I've never heard the entire explanation.

[quote]The story of how the Escovedos were living with Lionel Ritchie in his mansion and let him adopt Nicole Ritchie from them is kind of weird. I've never heard the entire explanation.

That's not what happened. If you search for it you can find the real story

the basics are that one of Sheila's brother (the HOT one who's in the Glamorous life video as her love interest/sax player) was in her band during the Purple Rain tour (Prince had her open up for him & the Revolution on all the dates). He hooked up with one of the wardrobe assistants on the tour (not clear if it was one time thing or they were dating for a while) and she got pregnant. Both of them were super young and the wardrobe girl had the baby with her on the tour.

Brenda Richie would come backstage to visit during the PR tour (she and Lionel were friends with Sheila because prior to her solo career, Sheila was a regular touring band member for Lionel) and wondered why there was this little baby running around. she wanted to adopt a baby too I guess and she ended up adopting Nicole since both of her parents were super young and not very financially stable.

Never heard of the Escovedos living with the Richie's. They were always based in Oakland.

by Anonymousreply 61April 22, 2020 3:29 AM

The only thing I ever read was an excerpt from Shelia's biography or possibly an interview excerpt. The way I read it was this. The baby momma was an unfit mom or not ready to be mom. Maybevdrugs or mental ullness. The E Family was constantly on the road earning a living. Mrs. Ritchie was with Nicole at the mansion more than anyone else. She couldn't have kids. They proposed the adoption. All agreed. So does Nicole have any relationship with the E's? She looks a little like Shelia.

"I have copies and will include them in my memoirs. You need to stop using Prince in death."

Hello, pot. Meet kettle.

by Anonymousreply 63April 22, 2020 4:11 AM

I explained it above at R61. It's in her book I think (I read it a whiel back). they don't say drugs etc. just that both her brother and the mom were super young and overwhelmed and Brenda wanted to adopt her and it worked out for everyone.

by Anonymousreply 68April 22, 2020 1:07 PM

Whatever. Prince was a crazy mofo who loved having beautiful women surrounding him at all times when in public.

I'm not sure about the others, but Vanity appears to have been his personal favorite. She was the most white or European featured of his protégés, and depending on one’s preference, perhaps the prettiest. She literally resembled a Mattel Black Barbie doll, with her “good” hair, tiny, pert nose, and big, brown, almond shaped eyes.

She was probably his most loyal of female sycophants, and if AIDS rumors are to be believed, they both probably died of the same illness, or the same illness hastened their deaths.

Gay, bi, or straight, he seems to have shared a special relationship with Vanity, and seemed to have held her in higher emotional esteem than the others, Apollonia included.

And hey, Sheila E is a FANTASTIC musician, and had the biggest hit amongst all of these chicks.

The black and white sequences of that video were filmed nicely, reminds me a little of the creepy nightmare club scenes in Madonna’s “Deeper and Deeper” too, years later.

Are we supposed to assume those are tranny hookers walking and dancing along the sidewalk to their unknown destination at the end? I think they are. Sheila’s character seems to have made good from fucking a rich man but can’t help but go slumming to her old hood.

Sheila, Apollonia, and Vanity shared a similar vocal style. I’d say it was how Prince recorded them, he wanted them all to sound the same. They weren’t strong vocalists but at least Sheila was an actual musician.

I didn’t know Sheila was part Mexican, I assumed her Latino heritage was Puerto Rican. Her style of percussion is more Caribbean Latin than Mexican.

I miss the distinct hairstyles of the Prince camp, the high perms with the side over one eye, and their tuxedo jackets and eyeliner and lacy shirts. Quite a look, almost like a cult- somehow the keyboard player who dressed like a surgeon was allowed to get away with not adopting the Prince look.

Well, maintained, perhaps.

But Wendy Melvoin, Lisa Coleman and Sheila E. were incredibly talented on their own. Wendy and Lisa, in particular, made a BIG contribution to Prince's music and sound from 1999 to Parade, a contribution that is often minimized or ignored.

Sheila is not a songwriter, but of course she's a top rate percussionist.

Many of the rest of Prince's "collaborators" were whoever he was fucking at the time, so the above sometimes get lumped together with the "proteges."

Both Wendy & Lisa's fathers were LA pro musicians. Not sure if Lisa's father (Mr Coleman) was technially "wrecking crew" but they were both big in teh industry and their families were friends. All the brother and sisters were musically inclined and they recorded an album together back in the 70s I think. Of course later Wendy joined her then-lover Lisa on the 1999 tour and eventually Prince asked her to take Dez Dickerson's place on guitar.

Her first live performance with Prince was the benefit concert they did in Minneapolis that was the debut of Purple Rain as well as the basic tracks fro some other songs on the soundtrack.

Appolonia claims in her post that The Revolution had to fight to be allowed to be included in the tribute that was aired last night.

April 21, 2020 marks the fourth year of the death of our beloved Prince. During this difficult time my Purple Rain family and I have done our best to help protect the legacy of Prince. This has been a labor of love. We will not allow anyone to rewrite the history of Prince. Prince wrote the song “Lemon Cake” the title based on the delicious cakes baked for him and inspired by Purple Rain’s award-winning lighting designer LeeRoy Bennett. Why just days before the sad anniversary of his death would anyone take and use the title of his song?$? And why was the Purple Rain Family not even offered the opportunity to pay homage to Prince at the Prince tribute concert to be televised April 21, 2020? Prince’s band The Revolution had to literally fight to attend and perform. Simply stated, this treatment and behavior is unacceptable. I AM truly saddened by all these events. I was literally forced to speak in the public forum because I am sick to my stomach by how Prince’s legacy is being distorted. Our Purple Rain Family is still here to defend his legacy, and we will forever love and protect you Prince 👑 Thank you for all your well wishes and for your continuing love and support. I AM forever grateful.

Mike Melvoin was President of NARAS (the Grammy academy) the year Prince & The Revolution performed on the Grammy's for Purple Rain. He introduced them and said his daughter was in the band.

In that Grammy clip Sheila’s hair looks exactly how Stevie Nicks wore hers in the Fleetwood Mac “Big Love” video. Maybe Prince for Jose Eber to do Sheila’s hair before the show.

Apollonia is still bitter that Prince nixed the Apollonia 6 nonsense and took Sheila E. as his opening act on the Purple Rain tour. And Sheila E. and her glow in the dark drumsticks slayed the AMAs in 1985.

that was a really good performance, even though her singing wasn’t great it was cool to see a lady drumming. The glowing thing was something that took the audience by surprise, she got a big applause and i remember watching that live on TV and my whole family was enthusiastic about what they just saw.

by Anonymousreply 104April 23, 2020 1:41 AM

that was probably the best AMA performance ever. billboard had it in the top 10 (possibly top 5). she was singing, dancing, and playing. 100% LIVE! no backing tracks.

"Artists" today wouldn't even imagine doing that.

she's no karen carpenter on the drums (or voice of course!)...

by Anonymousreply 107April 23, 2020 1:44 PM

R107 SHe's widely considered the best female percussionist in the industry. She has said she was influenced by Karen Carpenter btw.

But Sheila plays more than just a trap drum kit. She plays all forms of latin percussion (congas, timbales, bongos, etc.), drums as well as alittle guitar and bass.

If you read linter notes she's on alot of records you probably have herad, and she toured extensively with Marvin Gaye, George Duke, Lionel Richie among other all BEFORE she became "Sheila E" with Prince.

Nicole was born when her dad was only 19, I assume her mother was even younger than that, and sounds like she was a groupie. They apparently split up before Nicole was born. Sounds like Lionel and Brenda saw Nicole as a baby at his concerts all the time because her dad toured with him, and at some point probably offered to take the girl so she wasn't being dragged around like a prop.

Vanity and Sheila E. were much better singers than Apollonia. Vanity and Sheila E. had successful singles on their own.

Apollonia's only decent vocal moment was the highly-produced by Prince to make her sound as tolerable as possible in "Take Me With U" where she still sounds like she can't sing.

Didn't Apollonia get busted for drugs in the early 90's saying she was doing research for an acting role?

by Anonymousreply 112April 23, 2020 6:09 PM

As obsessive as Prince was with recording and producing, Apollonia's "Woo-Hoo-Hoo-Hoo" vocal in Take Me With U is still off-key.

by Anonymousreply 113April 23, 2020 6:51 PM

wasn't it VANITY who did the erotic dirty song "pretty mess" with the pretty boy extra who blows his over and over again huge load high in the hair (champagne used as a metaphor)...

Apollonia needs to shut her fucking piehole . Sheila’s a REAL musician.

by Anonymousreply 117April 25, 2020 3:37 AM

I liked Apollonia’s solo 1988 album. This was a particularly fun track.

Prince has had some hot guys in his band over the years, from Andre Symone in the early years to Bobby Z. and Brownmark in The Revolution to Tommy Barbarella and Tony T. in the New Power Generation. Matt “Dr.” Fink was cute in a dorky sort of way, and in contrast to what someone upthread said, he did actually have that big permed hair look as well.

Apollonia was useless. A thoroughly inferior replacement for Vanity. It is unthinkable that she would come for Sheila E.

Prince's demo of "Sex Shooter" kicks the ass of Apollonia's version -- if it is even her vocal at all.

were the other two hookers from Vanity 6/Apollonia 6 present at the Prince tribute? One was West Indian and wore frilly lingerie and the other was a severe European looking dominetrix type.

by Anonymousreply 125April 25, 2020 8:30 PM

Susan and Brenda. No, I don’t think any of them were invited. I think it’s fucked up how they don’t at least invite Apollonia to introduce one of the acts at these things. I mean, she WAS his leading lady in Purple Rain.

by Anonymousreply 126April 25, 2020 8:37 PM

OP, you've been redtagged as a troll. Not sure why, as I thought this was a good thread.

Well after her slanderous rant against Sheila, why would they? then again this was taped before she made that rant.

But seriously, Apples hasn't done anything related to Prince since Purple Rain. She hopped onstage with a tambourine a couple times during the Baby I'mS A Star finale on the PR Tour (she was NOT invited to perform).

No one really knows who she is and often confuse with her with Vanity, of whom Apples is a pale imitation.

by Anonymousreply 129April 26, 2020 2:46 AM

Apollonia went by her given name of Patty Kotero in all of her pre-PR credits. She was a model and former LA Rams cheerleader, had guest starred on several TV shows like Knight Rider, Fantasy Island and CHIPS, and was in a couple of music videos (Eddie Money’s “Shakin’” and Ray Parker Jr.’s “The Other Woman”). She was also in a Mexican-language soft core movie called “Amor Ciego” (similar to how Vanity had done the soft core “Tanya’s Island” in her native Canada before meeting Prince), and had been pounding the pavement in Hollywood for years when Prince hired her to replace Vanity in PR. She has been quoted as saying that, upon first meeting Prince, he asked her two things: “Do you believe in God” and “Are you hungry?” She answered yes to both, they went dancing at First Ave. (it was empty at the time, but he just wanted to see how she moved on the dance floor), and the rest is purple history.

Apollonia's singing on Sex Shooter is so awful. I don't think one note is in tune. Even when she is shouting at the end it's out of tune. Awful, awful.

Maybe she got a vocal coach because her singing on her 1988 album is much better.

It's a shame Vanity didn't do Purple Rain. She was so gorgeous.

by Anonymousreply 135April 28, 2020 2:32 AM

I don’t think she sounds that bad on SS. The only off tune bit is the “ooh-ooh-oooh” towards then end.
