Was it lack of having hits past the 1990's? Or was it her blockbuster failure on Broadway? What happened?
Why did Gloria Estefan's career go straight down the shitter?
by Anonymous | reply 166 | September 2, 2020 5:33 AM |
She was a novelty act
by Anonymous | reply 1 | April 18, 2020 9:43 PM |
Unlike Madonna, she knows she isnt 20 anymore and has transitioned into more mature pursuits. She had a great career and can rest on her laurels if she chose to do so. Aside from her musical career, she runs very successful restaurants in Miami.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | April 18, 2020 9:48 PM |
I saw the touring production of On Your Feet, expecting it to be bad, but it was actually an enjoyable evening out. Not Shakespeare but kind of fun. Before it began, I scoffed to my friend that I bet there will be a conga line and we’ll be on our feet. Thankfully, no conga line, but the usual crowd pleasing second finale was crowd pleasing.
I think she’s performed enough, happily married, and fine to relax.
I also have to say that I love her disco album Gloria!
by Anonymous | reply 3 | April 18, 2020 9:50 PM |
She couldn't rely on covers forever.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | April 18, 2020 9:50 PM |
JLo took over the pop Latina lane.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | April 18, 2020 9:51 PM |
She had a very successful period and things moved on. It happens all the time. She wasn’t that hugely talented to begin with but she could actually sing and had some good material. Watching J Lo on the Super Bowl certainly made me nostalgic for Gloria.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | April 18, 2020 9:54 PM |
Because she never should've had a notable career to begin with. She's an average singer with average looks and talent as a performer. GE was lucky to exist at a brief time when it was decided that she would be promoted as THE Latin pop star acceptable to the masses. She's as generic as they come and without luck she would've counted herself lucky to be employed as a cruise ship performer.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | April 18, 2020 10:08 PM |
She also was riding a wave of public sympathy for at least a decade after her 1990 tour bus crash.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | April 18, 2020 10:14 PM |
It was more than that. She had Emilion Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine behind her. Most singers who make it owe it to their writer-producers.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | April 18, 2020 10:15 PM |
I liked her better when she was part of Miami Sound Machine. When she went solo she went down the dull adult contemporary road of middling ballads.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 18, 2020 10:21 PM |
Her vocal tone changed and diminished too much. Her low notes early in her career had a smooth velvety quality like Karen Carpenter.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 18, 2020 10:22 PM |
She milked that fucking bus crash for all it was worth. For someone supposedly so injured, she was sure up and running around pretty quickly after.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 18, 2020 10:24 PM |
I understand criticisms of her voice but I find her vocals on "Turn the Beat Around" much less annoying than Vicki Sue Who Betty Lynn Robinson's.

I grew up in South Florida in the 80s and we were stuck with this no-talent for years on the radio before she hit the mainstream.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | April 18, 2020 10:29 PM |
A moderate talent and moderate beauty. I agree with the posts above - with the Latin population increasing in importance, she was crowned as The Latina. They tried some others, but it didn't stick for some reason.
JLo snatched that crown from her head. JLo was younger, prettier and had more cross-market appeal.
JLo happened - that's why Gloria is in a nursing home rocking back and forth, humming The Words Get In The Way to herself.
Even in her hayday, I would just shake my head and wonder how Gloria had this huge career. It was baffling to me.

She's currently doing a spinoff of Jada Pinkett Smith's Red Table Talks, with the Estefan family.
Next to Rita Moreno, she's probably the most influential Latina entertainer.

Yes, Gloria Estefan did appear in the 1998 VH1 Divas show. Along with Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, and Shania Twain. IMO, it was painful to watch Gloria and Shania in contrast to Aretha, Maria, and Celine. Gloria and Shania had no business on stage next to the other three. I'm not a huge fan of Mariah and Celine, but those two women having singing chops (yes, I said "chops"). Aretha Franklin, enough said.

Sadly, they turned off Carole's microphone. It's obvious. Carole starts to sing, realizes her mic is off, then actually smiles. I can't find it now on YouTube. Oh, well, Carole's still making royalties. Wrote some amazing songs, including "You've Got a Friend."

Gloria Estefan is well known in Miami for very shady things. But they have so much money, they are untouchable.
Gloria once drove her boat over a woman who had just fallen off her skis. The woman was cut to pieces by the propellers on Gloria's boat.

What an ugly mug!!!! And the personality of a roll of toilet paper.

Though her voice was always in tune she lacked emotion and soul.

If she were born more recently, she could be one of Teresa Giudice's daughters.

Abuela! (She turned into one.)
I never understand her appeal, for all the volume and beat and noise and visual gestures, the voice, as R147 said, lacked emotion and soul. It didn't stay in your head even a moment after she had stopped singing.

You bitches are so mean. Primitive Love and Let it Loose are awesome! Bad Boy is a bop and even used in Mase’s Feel So Good. Rhythm’s Gonna Get You, Conga, 1-2-3 and Anything for You were huge hits and there were some good album cuts.
I agree she was better with Miami Sound Machine. I love Hot Summer Nights from the Top Gun soundtrack.
But she did fight Tommy Mottola to record Mi Tierra and it was a worldwide hit for her. Gloria! is a fun disco album.
She was big on radio in the ‘80s and early ‘90s. She recorded a few too many sludgy ballads but still some good tunes from Destiny and Gloria! in the ‘90s.
There was an interesting article posted in Rolling Stone which portrayed Emilio as an asshole. And this was written after the accident.

R 142 I knew who she was. Heard some of her stuff. Wasn’t on my radar. Siouxsie was more my speed.

I used to love playing with my gernie to the “1-2-3” video.

Omg I am a big Gloria fan! She is my idol!

Well, alls I know is that the rhythm never got me, so she's a liar.

^You can’t dance?

Not to anything she sang. All those drums and congas and cowbells get my feet mixed up.

Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam did much better Latin-flavored pop in the 80s.

Go Away...great Latin tinged song.

Put r160 on "ignore" and half the thread disappears.

Maybe she didn't want to be pathetic like Madonna and Mariah Carey. She knew it was time to move on.
by Anonymous | reply 162 | April 20, 2020 6:25 PM |
I like I'm Not Giving You Up, both the ballad and dance versions.

It’s her voice. Period.
(And her politics)

OMG! Still beating off!
