Why did Gloria Estefan's career go straight down the shitter?

She was a novelty act

Unlike Madonna, she knows she isnt 20 anymore and has transitioned into more mature pursuits. She had a great career and can rest on her laurels if she chose to do so. Aside from her musical career, she runs very successful restaurants in Miami.

I saw the touring production of On Your Feet, expecting it to be bad, but it was actually an enjoyable evening out. Not Shakespeare but kind of fun. Before it began, I scoffed to my friend that I bet there will be a conga line and we’ll be on our feet. Thankfully, no conga line, but the usual crowd pleasing second finale was crowd pleasing.

I think she’s performed enough, happily married, and fine to relax.

I also have to say that I love her disco album Gloria!

She couldn't rely on covers forever.

JLo took over the pop Latina lane.

She had a very successful period and things moved on. It happens all the time. She wasn’t that hugely talented to begin with but she could actually sing and had some good material. Watching J Lo on the Super Bowl certainly made me nostalgic for Gloria.

Looked up her disco music. Fun.

Because she never should've had a notable career to begin with. She's an average singer with average looks and talent as a performer. GE was lucky to exist at a brief time when it was decided that she would be promoted as THE Latin pop star acceptable to the masses. She's as generic as they come and without luck she would've counted herself lucky to be employed as a cruise ship performer.

She also was riding a wave of public sympathy for at least a decade after her 1990 tour bus crash.

It was more than that. She had Emilion Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine behind her. Most singers who make it owe it to their writer-producers.

I liked her better when she was part of Miami Sound Machine. When she went solo she went down the dull adult contemporary road of middling ballads.

Her vocal tone changed and diminished too much. Her low notes early in her career had a smooth velvety quality like Karen Carpenter.

She milked that fucking bus crash for all it was worth. For someone supposedly so injured, she was sure up and running around pretty quickly after.

I understand criticisms of her voice but I find her vocals on "Turn the Beat Around" much less annoying than Vicki Sue Who Betty Lynn Robinson's.

Seeing her on talk shows, etc- She had ZERO, and I mean, ZERO charisma or star power...

Something always seemed off about her.

I grew up in South Florida in the 80s and we were stuck with this no-talent for years on the radio before she hit the mainstream.

A moderate talent and moderate beauty. I agree with the posts above - with the Latin population increasing in importance, she was crowned as The Latina. They tried some others, but it didn't stick for some reason.

JLo snatched that crown from her head. JLo was younger, prettier and had more cross-market appeal.

JLo happened - that's why Gloria is in a nursing home rocking back and forth, humming The Words Get In The Way to herself.

Even in her hayday, I would just shake my head and wonder how Gloria had this huge career. It was baffling to me.

I'd never thought of her as someone who's career took a nosedive, personally. Like some other posters upthread, I've always viewed her as having been a successful and talented singer, songwriter, producer and artist who has parlayed her talent across several successive media. I've always liked her and her work.

Yes, Gloria Estefan did appear in the 1998 VH1 Divas show. Along with Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, and Shania Twain. IMO, it was painful to watch Gloria and Shania in contrast to Aretha, Maria, and Celine. Gloria and Shania had no business on stage next to the other three.
