How come Barbara Stanwyk's nude photos never came back to haunt her?
There are more and all very easy to find online, so I guess they were also circulating during her lifetime. all taken during her Ziegfeld Follies days in NYC. When Marilyn's early nudes surfaced, for instance, it seems like the press created, or tried to create, a huge scandal out of it, but she refused to deny that's her and totally owned it (when asked by TIME if she really didn't have anything on during the photoshoot, she replied: "I had the radio on"). That's not the case with Barbara, I never came across anything from the time (all those Hollywood gossip magazines) that confronted her with the 'questionable choices' she made when posing nude in her youth. How come she never got any heat for it? was it excusable in her case, considering her rough childhood? She was definitely not the huge sex symbol Marilyn was, but she was a STAR for decades, and I find it odd that no one tried to milk her for it. My guess is, because she freelanced throughout her career, there was never one studio to threaten or blackmail about the release those photos, so no one had the interest.
Your thoughts? DISCUSS.

Maybe it's because Marilyn aspired to be a "sex symbol" and that's why the pictures "surfaced"?

Barbara was a tuff as nails dyke and NOBODY dared cross her. Plus she was universally loved by all who worked with her so that helps too.

A lot of actresses posed nude in the late 1920s and early 1930s. The Ziegfeld Girls posed for Alfred Cheney Johnston in hundreds of photos, and actors like Claudette Colbert, Sally Rand, Hedy Lamarr, Clara Bow, Johnny Weismueller and Jean Harlow appeared nude in films for a brief second or two. There are a lot of background nudes in movies like Glorifying the American Girl and Mandalay.
The only nudes that were considered career-killers were pornographic nudes, like Joan Crawford showing off her bits.

Stanwyk was beautiful and well-liked. She didn't do porn shots or promote herself as a sex symbol. Why would her nude pictures 'come back and haunt her'? She had a great career and possessed a beautiful body. OP, I don't think you understand the difference between nude photographs and pornography.

R7 I love Stanwyck and I love those photos, I think they're great, not pornographic and not even sexual... In general, I think she's the most modern in attitude of all the big golden era stars, and her nudes are part of it, and to me that's her biggest draw. Sort of puts things in perspective, generational differences and such which I more and more feel like they don't really exist - I've really been looking at my grandparents and their world views differently since I got into old Hollywood (millenial). Anyway, Hollywood always looked to me like such a prudish place, part of a prudish country, but in a glossy, fake, hypocrite way. So I assumed some people took advantage of this attitude for their own personal gain (selling stuff for tabloids and such), and that's what made me wonder about the above. Plus, it always seemed to me that in the american media of the early-to-mid 20th century, nude ladies were always paired up with sleaze. I've watched Hedy's film where she swims nude and runs around with her ta-tas out - it's innocent and quite poetic, but when she moved to the US, I know she had to pretend for the rest of her life that they were filming her from a great distance and that she didn't know they were using zoom lenses, or that she was too naive and was used by the director - everything to please the american public. I don't think there's any other western country that for so long, thought of women in a binary way - hoe or virgin.
(If you've guessed it - you're right. I'm not american. but I love you anyway)

When Louise Brooks became a star she tried to suppress nude “art studies” she’d posed for as a Ziegfeld Girl, saying they now embarrassed her. The judge was like, “Yeah, no.”
There really wasn’t a legal, widespread market for printing nudes like that in Hollywood’s Golden Age, so there’s no way the general movie going public would ever see them.
They were purchased by collectors.

Jean Harlow’s (for the most part, partial) nudes are lovely. And they convey the appeal she had, even if she seemed hard and tacky in half her movies.

Is there anything more boring than a naked woman? Can't belueve how much art is dedicated to the hairless little simps with droopy nips.

Hedy Lamarr was perfection in the face area but had the WORST nipples.

Barbara Stanwyck always played women with A Past, the sort of tough broads who'd done what they had to do to survive and lived to tell.
So having old nude photos didn't ruin her image as a tough broad with a past, same for Marilyn Monroe, whose image was that of a carefree sex object. Now if June Allyson or Greer Garson had had nude photos surface it'd have ruined their careers, because the public thought they were the kind of girls who'd never do that, even if they were starving.

Honestly, I think she was at most bisexual, not a dyke. She was known, especially, for liking younger men she could "mentor," such as her second husband Robert Taylor and later the bisexual Robert Wagner, as well as Farley Granger. I suspect that is why she did the Elvis film Roustabout , she probably wanted to bed him.
