I'm recycling my vegetables

Jealous, bitches?

I read an article about food you can actually re-grow, so I tried it out and it worked!

Apparently, you can take the bottom part of a romaine lettuce stalk, stick it in water, and make it grow again! Same for green onions. So I tried it with green onions, and I have a little plant about two inches high. I'm so excited!

Are there any other foods in my refrigerator that can be re-grown?

Apparently it works for pickles as well.

by Anonymousreply 1April 17, 2020 10:25 PM

I am trying it with a t-bone.

by Anonymousreply 2April 17, 2020 10:27 PM

Unfortunately R2, you're growing MOLD, not steak.

But on the plus side, you can use it for penicillin.

by Anonymousreply 3April 17, 2020 10:28 PM

Does it work for soylent green?

by Anonymousreply 4April 17, 2020 10:32 PM

Leave it in the fridge long enough and anything will start growing.

by Anonymousreply 5April 17, 2020 10:33 PM

Blueberries and strawberries.

by Anonymousreply 6April 17, 2020 10:34 PM

Avocados and carrots. Stick a toothpick through the base and suspend in a small glass of water. Also potato sprouts.

by Anonymousreply 7April 17, 2020 10:35 PM

I googled and found this...looks promising. But do you really need sunlight? I barely get any light in my studio apartment.

Watermelon seeds will grow.

by Anonymousreply 9April 17, 2020 10:35 PM

I can't keep my potatoes from growing.

by Anonymousreply 10April 17, 2020 10:36 PM

Chayote squash

by Anonymousreply 11April 17, 2020 10:37 PM

Actually, I think my t-bone just winked at me.

by Anonymousreply 12April 17, 2020 10:38 PM

So many good suggestions, but at some point, most of these have to be replanted, right?

The green onions are easy, because they grow straight out of the water, and you can use them immediately.

Same for the romaine, I believe.

And no R8, they don't need sunlight. My green onions receive no sunlight.

by Anonymousreply 13April 17, 2020 10:40 PM

You can regrow celery from stalks, though yes, you have to replant it at some point. But it works, I've done it.

The green onions regrow but won’t have the same taste..

by Anonymousreply 15April 17, 2020 10:46 PM

Are they bland, R15?

The article I read also said that the romaine will grow back only once.

by Anonymousreply 16April 17, 2020 10:49 PM

Romaines of the day

by Anonymousreply 17April 17, 2020 11:19 PM

You won't get the same benefits as something grown in soil. The nutrients have to come from somewhere.

by Anonymousreply 18April 17, 2020 11:23 PM

I eat the cucumbers after I've stuffed them up my shitty arse

by Anonymousreply 19April 17, 2020 11:28 PM

R19 well you are what you eat.

by Anonymousreply 20April 17, 2020 11:32 PM

Well bitches this is our new way of life in the months following COVID

by Anonymousreply 21April 17, 2020 11:36 PM

Potatoes are fun to grow. They have very fast-growing, large leaves. Since the potatoes are underground, you never quite know when they’re due to be harvested, except by digging them up.

by Anonymousreply 22April 17, 2020 11:51 PM

I grew a pineapple from the cutoff head. Took 2 years but finally has a fruit. I did it with 4 pineapples; the other 3 are just growing.

by Anonymousreply 23April 17, 2020 11:53 PM

[quote] I grew a pineapple from the cutoff head. Took 2 years

Um..... not very practical.

If using it for a food source during an apocalypse, then you'll probably die before you get to eat it.

by Anonymousreply 24April 17, 2020 11:57 PM

I recycle all my foods. Every morning about 10 minutes after a hot cup of coffee I go to the loo and recycle everything I ate the day before.

by Anonymousreply 25April 18, 2020 12:00 AM

R23, don’t let the agents from Dole hear that. Chiquita is no pushover, either.

by Anonymousreply 26April 18, 2020 12:09 AM

Garlic.

by Anonymousreply 27April 18, 2020 12:22 AM

I did the green onions once. It was kinda fun watching them grow. They didn’t quite have the same strength as the ones from the store though. I think the soil gives them more oomph than just a glass of water would.

by Anonymousreply 28April 18, 2020 1:18 AM

If I plant my kernels of mircowave popcorn that didn't pop, will they grow into new packets of mircowave popcorn?

by Anonymousreply 29April 18, 2020 1:37 AM

Not garlic, R27.

Those are grown underground.

by Anonymousreply 30April 18, 2020 1:47 AM

david chang has been big on this, I'm doing it too

Thanks R31, that link is amazing!!!

Just what I was looking for.

by Anonymousreply 32April 18, 2020 1:57 AM

I figure I have the time, why not?

by Anonymousreply 33April 18, 2020 2:01 AM

How long does this take, a year?

by Anonymousreply 34April 18, 2020 2:02 AM

My grandmother had the sweetest white grapes growing on an arbor at her house. They were so great.

by Anonymousreply 35April 18, 2020 2:02 AM

R34, I put my green onions in water on Sunday, and 5 days later, they've grown three inches!

It's the first thing I've ever grown, so it was very exciting.

I can actually use them to cook!

by Anonymousreply 36April 18, 2020 2:07 AM

R36, try the top end of a carrot next, it will blow your mind.

by Anonymousreply 37April 18, 2020 2:18 AM

[quote]How long does this take, a year?

holy fuck, you're a stupid cunt.

onions take no time at all to see grow, less than a week. carrots and lettuce also you see grow after a two weeks or so. god damn, what an idiot

by Anonymousreply 38April 18, 2020 11:35 AM

Jesus R38, get some therapy.

by Anonymousreply 39April 18, 2020 12:09 PM

Jeez, Farmer Ted. Calm down, he just asked a question. Everybody isn't born with agricultural knowledge.

by Anonymousreply 40April 18, 2020 12:10 PM

I tried this with romaine lettuce and put them in potting soil. The results were small and kind of weak.

by Anonymousreply 41April 18, 2020 12:12 PM

Old MacDonald had a frown.

by Anonymousreply 42April 18, 2020 12:13 PM

[quowte] Everybody isn't born with agricultural knowledge.

not knowing of seasonal growing - something that is millennia old, shows trump level ignorance, and is disgusting.

by Anonymousreply 43April 18, 2020 12:21 PM

So many things can be recycled.

by Anonymousreply 44April 18, 2020 12:26 PM

I did this...and let’s just say I pooped something that reminded me of the ending of Pet Cemetery!

by Anonymousreply 45April 18, 2020 12:41 PM

Can you freeze the stumps and heads and then regrow them later?

by Anonymousreply 46April 18, 2020 1:16 PM

R30, why does it have to be limited to water? Can't you put soil into a flower pot and plant your vegetables there?

by Anonymousreply 47April 18, 2020 1:54 PM

Wait, How do you do this with romaine? Please post articles. Also, other lettuces and vegetables? Do they taste good?

Also, I can transplant to soil, if need be.

by Anonymousreply 48April 18, 2020 2:18 PM

I stick the bottom of lettuce and they are growing! I think with them and spring onions one could just snip off the leaves and stems and leave the plant growing but I wonder how they all will taste

by Anonymousreply 49April 18, 2020 2:28 PM

You get the roots going and growth started in water and then plant them in soil.

by Anonymousreply 50April 18, 2020 2:50 PM

R48, see the link at R31.

There are some really good tips.

[quote] not knowing of seasonal growing - something that is millennia old, shows trump level ignorance, and is disgusting.

You sound mentally ill.

As if you're so perfect. I'm sure there are many things that others know and you DON'T know. Yet you don't see those people jumping down your throat!

by Anonymousreply 51April 18, 2020 6:54 PM

stick it in the hole!

by Anonymousreply 52April 18, 2020 10:27 PM

[quote] stick it in the hole!

That's what she said.

by Anonymousreply 53April 18, 2020 10:29 PM

They need lots of sunshine for it to work otherwise you just get rotting garbage.

by Anonymousreply 54April 19, 2020 1:00 AM

that's not hard

by Anonymousreply 55April 19, 2020 3:40 AM

I never know what idiots the DL were until i read this thread

Avocados will grow a few years at best, then die. Growing vegetables in water in your kitchen is a recipe for food poisoning.
