The media was saying May 1 at the earliest, if the I.R.S. already has your bank account info because you e-filed your taxes.
They also said the I.R.S. would soon have a website where you could verify or update your account info.
I don't know where either thing stands. But they were warning it could take 2 months after Congress's law because of how long Bush's and Obama's credits took.

The IRS issued a statement last night that they sent out payments to everyone who had direct deposit yesterday....so, if this isnt another Trump scam, they should appear in accounts Monday or Tuesday at the latest.

[quote] People on Social Security, Disability or Survivor's Benefits who don't file taxes will not need to do so to get payments. If you haven't filed taxes in 2018 or 2019 for other reasons, the IRS has a form to file a simple tax return on its website.

r54, its going to take more than unemployed people using this money to buy grocery and pay their past due bills to stimulate the economy. People need to be encouraged spend on consumer goods and other things to get us out of the hole. Also I saw this morning that most people who are employed will not be working a full 40 hours anytime soon, unless they can telework. That means a lot of hours are getting cut.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | April 15, 2020 4:43 PM |

I do get SS, so the site says I don't have to do anything....maybe it will come with my May payment.
That CHECK MY PAYMENT site asks you questions about your tax forms including I owed Money or I got a Refund....and asks the amounts - if both are zero, there is no option and you can't complete the form.

They deposit his SS money in there every month. I can't enter it for him until he calls me back and gives me his tax return info.
As for me, I entered my payment info over a week ago on the IRS site and they don't even have any information about when or if I'll get a check (yes I qualify and filed taxes).

by Anonymous | reply 76 | April 15, 2020 6:45 PM |
It is confusing for SS recipients, especially if you factor in deposits made through the Direct Express Debit Card which no one has addressed.
So there are three modes of Social Security payments: (1) paper check; (2) direct deposit into bank account; and (3) direct deposit to Direct Express Debit Card.

R120 here, let me elaborate. If you filed and have the same bank account on record in the 2018/19 taxes, you'll get it. If you have a different account, well, you have to use the IRS app to input your new account information.

I was able to go to the IRS website and enter my account information. Let's see what happens.
What's really disgusting about this whole thing is banks seizing the stimulus checks for people whose accounts are overdrawn! The Fed didn't take that into account. I read 2 stories about this yesterday.

Wait. What should the banks have done? If you’re still writing checks on money that’s not there, the bank honors those checks and is getting their money back they laid out for you.

In my account this morning (Apr 17). I filed 2019 taxes with H & R Block electronically in mid-February, did a direct deposit of the refund, and paid H & R Block's fees with a personal credit card.

R128, I get that. However these people needed that money for food and rent. The banks could take their overdraft money from unemployment when that's direct deposited. I'm pretty sure Trump and his minions will make sure the banks are made whole. It's just an unfortunate consequence of a bad situation being made worse.

What’s the difference? People would be bitching about that too. And the banks should go further down the rabbit hole of covering bad checks in the hope you don’t close your account and get another one at a different bank for your unemployment?
Banks have always done it this way. They debit your account and whenever a deposit is put in, it goes out immediately.
I understand what you’re saying under the circumstances, but these people were overdrawn not because someone else took money out, but because they spent the money already. And the computer that credits/debits accounts doesn’t know what circumstances we’re in.

R125
That is how all banks work, and have done so for ages. Any funds deposited into an overdrawn account go first to satisfy that DEBT, balance remaining is whatever sums are left, if anything.....
No, it doesn't matter who, what or why funds are deposited, you owe the bank money and they are going to take their cut off the top. This is always clearly spelled out in TOS given to every new account holder.
Each week bank tellers, customer service agents, mangers and others have to go through this BS. Broke person wants to deposit their paycheck but are over drawn....
Can I cash this check?
No, your account is over drawn. You can deposit it, and when it clears bank will take funds owed first.
But I have other checks coming in/need all this money.....
Ma'am/Sir I'm sorry, there is nothing I can do, if you deposit that check (money order, wire transfer, etc.... ) bank will automatically clear over draft first....
And so it goes....
Certain people make lots of noise about the "unbanked"; when truth to tell is many of those people are just incapable of keeping a checking or savings account, Consistently over drawn which at some point leads them to simply go back to using check cashing places because they don't want part of their checks taken to clear the over draft. Eventually account is closed for cause and reported to ChexSystems; then they cannot open any sort of new bank account for about 7 years or so.
People who have collection agencies, liens, garnishments and other activity are another matter. There federal and local governments have leeway in exempting certain funds from being taken.

It is a lesson learned R136. If you look on Reditt there are a lot of people who got their return deposited to a pre-paid debit card (return advance I assume). Once they spent their return they tossed the card because they couldn't have guessed more money would be coming 3 months down the line. The IRS has no where to deposit that money (unless you want it sitting in H&R Block's coffers and have to fight them for it).

[quote]Certain people make lots of noise about the "unbanked"; when truth to tell is many of those people are just incapable of keeping a checking or savings account,
Bullshit. Millions of Americans stopped using brick and mortar banks after the 2008 banking scandal that brought down our housing economy. They were using money they didnt have to gamble with. It finally came to light that the business model most banks use to profit was entirely based on tricks to cause bank account holders extremely high fees by holding deposits, checks, and other tricks to trigger overdraft fees. Those late fees made the vast majority of money for them than someone with a perfect score card. It's not that just people screwed up, it was their actual business plan to trick customers into all sorts of hidden fees.
So after that came to light, many people moved to online banks and some switched to cash. Most of those "unbanked" people never came back. And why should they? Think about it. Cashing a check at Walmart for $5 dollars might sound high, but not as high as $35 for it to be returned and another $35 for overdraft. If you do the math it's actually cheaper not to use a traditional bank. Plus interest earned is almost nothing. And now a days there are many other ways to pay bills or transfer money with just the click of an app.

[quote] Think about it. Cashing a check at Walmart for $5 dollars might sound high, but not as high as $35 for it to be returned and another $35 for overdraft.
Or one could ... I don't know, not spend more than you make.
Not trying to be a dick R146, but your argument is poor. The only real "good" reason to be unbanked is if your pay isn't direct deposited (or if you don't have enough deposited to qualify for a bank's fee waiver).
Even then, many CU's don't have the same deposit requirements as Chase or BOA.

by Anonymous | reply 148 | April 17, 2020 11:53 PM |
Its not about bouncing checks R147. You have sound like you are 100 years old where banks are respectable institutions with only the best ethics involved. That's just not true these days. The financial fiasco of 2008 proved that to us. They brought the whole economy down with their irresponsible loan process, gambling with money they actually didn't have. But anyways you are missing the point. Their other way of making money was to purposeful trick people into high fees. They can randomly hold a deposit for days or weeks, not give you an exact date when it will clear, not give you notice it even being held, bounce a check and charge you a fee. It's all totally legal. And the vast majority of people don't have thousands of dollars just sitting in the bank doing nothing and gaining no interest. The normal monthly fee was not how they made their money anymore. Their business model is based on getting the customer to fail. Think about that. THEIR BUSINESS MODEL WAS BASED ON GETTING CUSTOMERS TO FAIL.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | April 18, 2020 12:17 AM |
I've seen the light R149. You are completely right.
When I spend more than in my account, I should expect the bank to cover me at their expense.
I shouldn't expect them to obey federal law and print out on deposit receipts when my balance will be available (see below).
I should expect them to pay me 5% interest on my $38 in my checking account when the Fed rate is about 0% at this point.
You win. You are completely right.

Unless someone has a valid SSN they aren't getting this free stimulus money. Those with tax payer ID numbers including legal immigrants, holders of green cards, work visas, etc... are all excluded. Ditto if you are in a mixed marriage/household. That is if one partner is a US citizen with SSN, and the husband is not then there is only one payment of $1200, not $2400.

Actually, R149 is right, R150. The banking system is set up to discriminate against people who have little or no money in a time when not having a bank account isn't an option. I mean, is it fair that the working poor have to pay exorbitant monthly fees because they don't keep somewhere between $1000 an $10,000 in their checking accounts at all times? The underlying rationale, that the interest paid on this amount is sufficient to cover the costs to the bank to process checks, deposits and withdrawals, is fake. It costs a bank mere hundredths of a penny to process a check, and since most people rarely, if ever, see a teller to transact business, it's a fallacy that those costs justify monthly service charges. The actual costs to maintain an account, on a monthly basis, is so near zero that it's criminal to charge as much as $25 a month to simply have an account. Meanwhile, if you're like me and keep enough in my account to avoid the monthly fee, the interest on my account statement last month, on an average daily balance of about $5000, was $0.02. That alone tells you how much it costs the bank to manage a checking account.
But hey, we live in a world where the bank says the reason they have to go to ATMs is because tellers cost too much, and then turn around and charge you to use the ATM when seeing the teller is "free". Where's the logic in that? And don't get me started on how cheap it is to run ATMs.
I had a sobering experience when doing some home renovations. I hired a guy off craigslist to do some basic handyman jobs around the house, and when I went to pay him with a check, he asked me if I would pay him in cash instead. I didn't have enough on hand, so he reluctantly took my check. When I got my statement with the cancelled check image, I looked closely and noticed that he'd gone to one of those check cashing places; I looked up what they charge to cash a personal check, it was shocked to find they got $35 to cash my check for slightly more than $300. This guy lost 10%+ of his pay to cash my check. So, he's so poor that he can't get a bank account without paying a monthly fee, and can't cash a check regardless of the source without paying a fee for that privilege. The banks have levied taxes on the poor, for being poor; it's that simple. (And then I rehired him for more work, paid in cash and gave him an extra $50 to cover the cost of cashing my previous check, so I guess the bank has levied a tax on me for being a moral person.)
Your further argument, that the bank should not cover checks written by someone who has deposited funds not yet cleared, is another money-making scheme designed by the banks to take advantage of poor people. Yes, banks print the federally-mandated statement on the receipts, which dates back to the era in which it took three+ days to process a paper check. In the modern world. checks are processed in a matter of hours, if not minutes. The entire system is now electronic, and few paper checks are moved through the Fed. What the banks are doing is sitting on the float for the legally limited length of time when they know, usually days earlier, that the check has cleared and the funds are available.
And the irony of this entire argument is that retail banking is no longer a profit center for the big banks. They make far more off government graft, corruption and what amounts to money laundering schemes. They intentionally made mistakes throughout the 2008 housing collapse that should have shut them down permanently; instead, we taxpayers bailed them out, only so they could then turn around and screw us by repossessing homes, even ones where there were no delinquencies or problems. The banks tightened credit precisely when it should have been relaxed, and despite the fact that the government underwrote a relaxation of credit policies, making it risk-free for banks to make loans.
But go ahead and defend the indefensible.

Much of what you say may be true, but keep in mind many of those without bank accounts prefer it that way. These are persons participating in the cash/underground economy and or have other various reasons for not having a bank account. Most could easily do so, but checks and having a bank account create paper trails. Those getting SS, SSDI, unemployment or any other host of other benefits often work under the table because reporting income would cancel or lessen amounts received. That or cancel them out all together....
Then of course there is the big one, avoiding paying federal and or local income taxes.

Years go, I allowed myself to be talked into signing up for Overdraft protection. I did it because the bank was holding my out-of-state payroll deposit, despite the fact that OOS payroll checks are not to be held. I had already paid a bunch of bills with that money so I not only incurred the bank's insufficient funds charge but the vendors charges as well. The total was about $250.
Anyway, the overdraft protection deposited $100 in my account whenever I didn't have sufficient funds. And they charged interest on the "loan." I cancelled that after 2 months.

Actually, that's bullshit. Your premises is that everyone works in some kind of white collar job where every employer offers direct deposit. That's maybe 70% of the population leaving 90 million Americans who cant do that. No bank is going to give you a totally free account without fees and without locking into direct deposit. If you work 1099, freelance or Gig economy direct deposit is never an option because the amount and frequency of deposits will be complete different month to month. And for people like that banks want a minimum balance which brings us back to the high cost of maintaining a bank account use a traditional bank.

After learning that the Puerto Rico islanders have not received their stimulant checks to date, I am convinced that those of us in blue states/territories or otherwise held in contempt are in for a long wait. I hope I'm wrong.

Our Medically Disabled and senior citizens are at serious risk with this corona virus. They are self isolating. This comes at an increase cost to them, serious disruption to their lives and considerable stress. How dare you speak this way about our vulnerable Americans?
Also, my point is the SSA already has their contact information, so getting checks to them is EASY. Any delays by the republicans is purposeful and malicious. Local SSA offices are suppose to be helping these people, also. They have better be helping these people.

How does self isolating cost more?
[quote]serious disruption to their lives and considerable stress.
It’s a serious disruption to everyone’s life FFS. They’re getting income. Now, you want to talk about stress? How about the stress of people not getting any income for the last 4 weeks and now their rent is due? Or they have to feed themselves or their family? With NO income at all.
How do you not see that? I’m not advocating the disabled and retired get nothing, they just shouldn’t come first on the list of who gets it.
by Anonymous | reply 208 | April 25, 2020 9:26 PM |
omg, you are that fucking asshole from the titanic. Did you shove seniors out of the way to get toilet paper too, because YOU COME FIRST?
FUCK YOU!

[quote] because YOU COME FIRST?
I’m curious as to what makes you think you should.
People with NO income should get the stimulus before anyone with SOME income.
by Anonymous | reply 210 | April 25, 2020 11:15 PM |
You can’t really live on SSA. A lot of seniors supplement their income. I see quite a few elderly workers at Walmart and if they were told they were most at risk and to stay home, then how can they survive? They needed their check more than someone who makes 70k and is still working from home.
by Anonymous | reply 211 | April 26, 2020 5:06 PM |
Yes, they do, r211. But someone who has no income whatsoever, as in zero money coming in because their job is closed, needs it first.

Does anyone know where the checks are mailed from? I am trying to figure out how many days it will take to arrive to SoCal.
I need my fucking check now. They said they mailed it in on Friday the 24th, so I don't know how many days I will have to wait before it arrives to my mailbox.

r214, I was thinking navy suit, pink shirt and pocket square.

R216 Call the White House and see if the Orange Turd has signed your check.
by Anonymous | reply 218 | April 26, 2020 6:51 PM |
If you are in the SSA system receiving checks already, it is EASY to send a stimulus check to them. Or increase the monthly amount they get. Any delays in doing this, is on purpose and malicious.
Also, there are local SSA offices. Our seniors and medically disabled are already suppose to be getting MORE SERVICES through these offices. What services are being provided to them already? Also, are they increasing the assistance to them now because it is a FUCKING PANDEMIC?
This is the main function of the Social Security System. Also, SSA can give stimulus checks through this system to all Americans to prevent an economic depression. This is the other MAIN FUNCTION. This is why we have the SSA program.
Any attempts to block or delays this is on purpose and malicious. You need to hold the White House and the Republicans account for this. Screwing over people in the SSA program (seniors and Medical disables) and all Americans during a FUCKING PANDEMIC.
VOTE all Republicans OUT of OFFICE!
November 2020!

Call me gullible, but I never thought they would take it this far and give hundreds of billions to their millionaire friends and leave the poors out in the cold. Not in an emergency.
Boy was I wrong.
by Anonymous | reply 220 | April 26, 2020 7:49 PM |
SSA is not suppose to be for the poors. It suppose to keep people in the middle class and prevent recession/depression. People with a middle class income participate in their communities. All those business and services stay afloat. No one should be paid under the table, poverty wages in American.
If you attack SSA you are blowing up the middle class. Basically, you are blowing yourself up. Why would anyone want to do something as stupid and dangerous as this? FDR built this for us.

When you type your address into the IRS site to check on the status, make sure you type the address in ALL CAPS!

by Anonymous | reply 226 | April 27, 2020 2:05 PM |
Do something MORE to help our seniors and medically disabled!!!! Do you think these people should stand in a toilet paper line or food bank?
The Republicans are so fucking disgusting and vile. Just increase the amount they get per month. This should be in the PLAN for a war, crisis or a fucking pandemic, right?
by Anonymous | reply 227 | April 27, 2020 8:31 PM |
Do you need to have your taxes done first?
Shit. My W-2 from the temp agency I worked at is hard to access and their help desk number is no longer in service.
by Anonymous | reply 229 | April 27, 2020 9:45 PM |
No R229, you don't. If you filed taxes in 2018 then you're good to go. If you didn't have to file taxes in 2018 and haven't filed yet for 2019 then you'll still get a payment. Have you checked the "get my payment" at the IRS website to see if they're showing a pay date for you?
by Anonymous | reply 230 | April 28, 2020 12:38 AM |
How do you fuck this up, Republicans? There is the Social Security System right there.
by Anonymous | reply 231 | April 28, 2020 12:44 AM |
Privatized social security would become something too big too fail. Top bosses would know this and cut themselves a hefty check before the government bailed them out.
At that point, what's the difference between our corruption and China or Russia's corruption?
by Anonymous | reply 232 | April 28, 2020 12:51 AM |
So Twitter was a tiny bit useful.
Apparently some people could not see the status of their payments on the "Where's My Payment" IRS site.
There is a trick, apparently, since the IRS page runs on 50 year old software - when you enter information, you must put your address in ALL CAPS.

My friend who was informed her deposit would happen tomorrow just emailed me to say she got her money this morning.
by Anonymous | reply 238 | April 28, 2020 12:14 PM |
Just checked the website; my deposit is set for 4/30/2020. My account is with a credit union so I may see it reflected tomorrow.
For the person who says you HAVE to use all caps, that's not true. When I went online to enter my deposit info, I used lower case and was able to enter my info. When I checked the website this morning, I used lower case and saw when I can expect my deposit.
The address abbreviation doesn't have to be exact. I live on a lane. My street sign has it abbreviated as LA, while the postal service uses LN. However, this was a problem when I tried to link my Verizon mobile phone bill and internet years back. Because the address wasn't an exact match, it wouldn't let me combine them.

Good job! And remember, it’s very important to write the correct routing number for direct deposit. I made the mistake of forgetting 1 number, which caused more delays and headaches.

Took about a week or so from when I was able to provide my banking info.
by Anonymous | reply 241 | May 1, 2020 8:55 PM |
I received mine, and I'm more thankful than I expected. I've been in the hospital on FMLA, and my company has been finding every reason not to pay me, and I'll be bouncing checks soon if I can't get it all straightened out. And I NEVER bounce checks. At least, not since I was about 19. I guess I should count my blessings that the hospital only had basic cable, so I'm all caught up on 'Northwoods Law' and 'Chrisley Knows Best'.

Much older neighbor got his check earlier this week and asked me of all people if would walk him to his bank as didn't want to go alone. That and only branch open locally has lines stretching half a NYC block or longer.
Cannot believe how DT is able in all ways large and small to hijack American government to suit his purposes. Sure enough in dark bold large font print check has "Donald J. Trump - Economic Impact Payment..." slapped on front. Guy said he was going to cross that part out but strongly suggested otherwise as bank may not accept a defaced check, and wasn't standing in line for hours for nothing.
