Interesting OP. I have never really "gotten" this one.. And I am a major Bergman fan.
I own the Criterion Collection version and try to watch every Christmas, and I generally do not watch until the end..

The TV version was superb. The edited, movie version left out so much of Bergman's excellence.

F & A is better for Xmas. Watch SCENES FROM A MARRIAGE instead. A married couple, socially isolated, psychologically and verbaly abuse each other. It's like real life now. And it's 6 hours long, so you can binge-watch in your own social isolation.
