Good Friday is a market holiday R13. If stimulus $ were sent within the last 3 days via direct deposit, people might experience a delay in receiving it if they're using a brokerage account for cash management purposes.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | April 10, 2020 8:47 PM |
For what it is worth I have seen scattered comments from people, usually who use credit unions, saying they got theirs today.
When I was with a CU I would often get paid "early". Has something to do with how direct deposits work. They (the payroll processor/government) first send a file saying "deposit $100 into account XXX" and then several days later, they actually send the money. Some banks credit the money as soon as they get the initial file.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | April 10, 2020 8:50 PM |
Yeah, I use the same bank as my employer so I get my checks a couple of days before they're technically supposed to be there.

by Anonymous | reply 35 | April 10, 2020 9:02 PM |
r30 is correct. Direct Deposits are processed by the Fed's ACH system, which has developed certain quirks over time, that allow for some banks to post deposits earlier than others depending on how confident the bank is there is little or no risk of default. Here is a good explanation from a reddit user (ignore references to Navy FCU):
TLDR: They post certain direct deposits earlier than other banks because they are aware that the direct deposit will be coming soon.
This is confusing to explain if you don’t understand the intricacies of how ACH works, but I’ll do my best. When someone, like your employer, submits a payroll file via ACH to be paid to all the receivers in the file (the employees) they have to determine what the effective entry date should be for the deposits. The effective entry date is the desired posting date of when they want the deposits posted. For a traditional commercial employer (e.g. Walmart, Olive Garden, Target) they would submit a payroll file on a Wednesday, for example, with an effective date of Friday. This would mean that the employer would be debited and all the employees would receive their pay on Friday. What Navy FCU does in certain cases is gives you access to those funds on Wednesday night or Thursday morning because they’ve received the file, even though it’s not effective yet. The federal government can submit ACH files up to 5 business days in advance of the actual effective/pay date, so that’s why those payments can be made available so much sooner.
Navy FCU assumes some credit risk when they make those deposits available early, but it’s a choice they’ve made. Banks must make the deposits available no later than the date the file settles (settlement date/effective date), but they can make it available sooner if they want to.

Yes and no
I did my 2019 taxes without using direct deposit so I am fucked according to the IRS this morning. I'll have to wait until April 24 when they start mailing checks, so I won't probably see my stimulus check until the middle of May.

by Anonymous | reply 91 | April 11, 2020 2:07 AM |
[quote]The FREE app—which will be found at IRS.gov—will allow taxpayers who filed their tax return in 2018 or 2019 but did not provide their banking information on their return to submit direct deposit information. Once they do, they will get their Economic Impact Payments in their bank accounts quickly, instead of waiting for a check to arrive in the mail. “Get My Payment” will also allow taxpayers to track the status of their payment.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | April 11, 2020 2:11 AM |
Just keep in mind under normal circumstances once provided with taxpayer banking information IRS will keep it on record permanently. Of course federal laws limit what can be done with that information, but anytime in future should IRS need to find where you have money, that is first place they will look.
Those who don't have any issues with IRS, nor will in future are fine. But for those who have current back tax issues, and or something pops up in future, again if IRS needs to seize or attach income or assets....
Stimulus checks are not subject to offset provisions, so those what owe back taxes will still get whatever sums they have coming.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | April 11, 2020 2:47 AM |

R105
Oh yes there is dear.
Not everyone is tethered to their computer, tablet or phone waiting with baited breath for these payments. That and or they aren't shouting from the housetops upon arrival.
IIRC there is a process where IRS informs bank payment is coming, then it appears a day or so later. This is likely same sort of thing when you sign up for certain direct deposits and they send a small amount (like one dollar) to account number given to ensure it is valid.
If funds were deposited Thursday or Friday people might not see them reflected in actual account balance until Saturday or even Tuesday due to way most banks work. That is for all modern technology many banks still reflect some transactions one day after they occur.
When you deposit funds at a branch or teller before cut off time, you see it reflected in next days work. But checks and some other debits that come in on Thursday won't show until Friday's work which is shown on Saturday. Friday's work isn't generally available until early Monday morning when bank has reconciled books/accounts.
Pending electronic debits or credit may or may not process same day, if they don't you won't see them until next business day's work.
by Anonymous | reply 107 | April 11, 2020 5:59 AM |
Just a pro tip. I have a private commercial bank and a credit union, that I divide my weekly check between.
I get "Paid" on Fridays.
In two years there has never been a week where my private bank didn't make my money available on Fridays. It has never been earlier than Friday.
In two years there has never been a week where my credit union didn't make the funds available on Wednesday or Thursday. In truth it has varied which has been less dependable, but it's mostly been on Wednesdays.
I'm not sure why it is, but it doesn't surprise me that credit union account holders are seeing their money earlier.

Our credit union used to get deposits a little early like others described above, until about two years ago when that all stopped. It's been bad enough that I have transferred most of my money to other banks.

Without Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer's action most people getting any money at all would have gotten no more than $600.00. You can thank them if you're getting $1200.00. Trump and McTurtle would have rather given nothing to anyone other than those unemployed. They had to be shamed and blamed to agree to what they did. Those of us considered "essential" workers who still have to go to work every day pandemic or not, should get the same $600 a week bonus check that the unemployed are getting. It's hazard pay.

Now that I got my 1200 ( at least my bank said I’ll get it tomorrow)I worry about my unemployment. Could have sworn they said we would be making what we normally make plus a 600 bonus. I cant talk to a real person and they tell be even my emails will have a long wait time I fill out my form online and the weekly amount is half of what I usually make and the 600 could take up to three weeks. I wrongfully applied in Ky who said I didn’t need to look for work but when I applied in the correct state Indiana they said I must still look. Under a stay at home order?
by Anonymous | reply 151 | April 15, 2020 5:49 AM |
You tell them you're looking anyway, r151, because they system is archaic and will boot you out if you use common sense.
Ask at a few places you know aren't hiring and list the contact person on your paperwork, if your state requires the information. If you apply online, use the contact email from the website where you applied.

I called the IRS regarding my late Father's last tax return. The IRS rep was adamant, wouldn't speak to me unless I emailed her my Father's Power of Attorney. I explained that my Father had been dead six months, that the IRS was perfectly happy to take MY money that I paid in my Father's name for what he owed the IRS on his last tax return. The IRS rep simply repeated "We need your Father's signature on a Power of Attorney". I pleaded, "But he's been dead for six months". The rep simply repeated "We need his signature." By that time, I'd enough and responded "Well, I'll just go dig him up and get it for you". And hung up.
Government agencies work to rules, not logic or, as R152 so correctly stated, common sense.

Exactly, r153, and people certifying for their benefits online have an extra layer of idiocy to deal with in the form of outdated websites that don't allow you to explain any oddities. If you're honest and say you were too sick to look for work or didn't look at all, you are automatically disqualified because the site only knows what it was programmed to accept before this virus caused exceptions to the rules.

You check that you looked. Is it x'd off that you have to say where. I did look. I opened an email from SimpyHired, some website that sends me job listings all the time. I looked. Find those online listings in your area and you open the email and look at it. You looked for work this week.

[quote] Could have sworn they said we would be making what we normally make plus a 600 bonus.
[quote] Now I’m hoping for unemployment plus the 600.
No, that’s not the way the bill works. You will not be getting more than what you were earning when you were working. Unemployment benefits in most states are paltry sums. The $600 is not a “bonus,” it supplements the state’s figure.
For example, let’s say you normally make $900/wk. New Jersey’s maximum unemployment payout is $425. If you added the $600 to that, it would be $1,025 (more than you earned).
They will match UP to $600 to eliminate the difference. So you’d be getting $900/wk, not $1,025.
$425 + $475 from the Feds for a total of $900.
by Anonymous | reply 184 | April 15, 2020 12:00 PM |
also, people who received it- does it seem to be following what they said about what income levels would receive it when? they said it would send to people who made twenty thousand or less first and then go up from there

R185 that only goes for people who the irs don’t have your bank info. Doesn’t matter how much make you make it’s that you filed in the last year or two direct deposit.
by Anonymous | reply 187 | April 15, 2020 12:07 PM |
My husband and I just got our stimulus deposit. Though our combined annual income is over the limit of $198,000, our ADJUSTED gross income is below the limit, so we received a reduced amount.
by Anonymous | reply 188 | April 15, 2020 12:08 PM |
r184 is incorrect. I can't find anything backing up his claim.
If you are eligible for unemployment, you will get the full 600.
[quote]Will I get the full $600?
[quote]If you’re eligible for at least $1 of state-level or federal unemployment compensation, you get the full $600, according to the Labor Department.
by Anonymous | reply 189 | April 15, 2020 12:11 PM |
[r185] I believe the direct deposits all went out today, regardless of income levels. After all, they just need to his the "send" button on their computer and they can transfer to millions of accounts in a day. I think what you are referring to is the mailing of actual paper checks. Those will go out based on income level, with the lowest earners getting their checks first.

by Anonymous | reply 193 | April 15, 2020 12:14 PM |
I agree, r193, which is why we were told it was structured that way.
After doing a little research, it appears i WAS wrong. Numerous sites say the $600 (in full) in addition to whatever benefits your state provides.
That’s not what we were told in the beginning, as you’re right, you’ll earn more being unemployed than if you were working. Doesn’t make sense.
by Anonymous | reply 194 | April 15, 2020 12:18 PM |
Mine just hit last night.
by Anonymous | reply 195 | April 15, 2020 12:19 PM |
The $600 isn't backdated, so when you add it up, the $600 per week extra you're getting now won't be making up for a lot of weeks where you got nothing (because the sites were down or other snafus) or where you got far less than your paycheck. Plus, in states that have low Unemployment benefits, you're still not getting what you would when you were working, even with the extra $600.
It's only for weeks March 29 through July 31st, I believe.
by Anonymous | reply 196 | April 15, 2020 12:20 PM |
Yes, some low wage earners on unemployment will be temporarily making more money than they did on their jobs.
So what? Our minimum wages should be higher anyway, this expires in a few months. I can't believe people get upset about seeing the people struggling in our country getting a few more dollars.
The whole point of this measure is to keep people at home and out of the workforce to encourage social distancing.

by Anonymous | reply 203 | April 15, 2020 12:44 PM |
FYI if any of you bitches owe money to a creditor they CAN take your direct deposit if you have a garnishment. The devil is in the details. The US government cannot take your money even for back pay, or late taxes but private companies, like bill collectors are exempt from that rule. Apparently Nancy Pelosi did put something in the bill to stop that, but those Repugs in charge refused to sign off on that detail.
So rejoice sleezy bill collectors, it's Christmas during the pandemic for you.

Onto the second stimulus check. Congress did a thing here, but a $1,200 one-time payment isn't really doing much for anyone, especially not the poorest among us. Make it $1,200 monthly payments for the rest of the year.

My mother, who is on SS, hasn't received her deposit yet.
R210, did your mother mention doing anything in particular to ensure payment? I read that SS folks who do not file for taxes but have their SS checks direct deposited DO NOT have to do anything. Treasury will deposit to the same account as the SS checks.

It is also bullshit for me. I filed and paid in 2018 as a 1099 employee.
I haven’t filed yet for 2019, because I owe and the deadline got extended.
I’m no longer working as an independent contractor, but since the majority of my 2019 earnings were from that source, I don’t qualify for unemployment and Ohio. My W-2 employment in 2020 and the latter part of 2019 is also over because it is school related. Now it looks like the gig economy strikes again, because now I will likely have to wait for a paper check.

by Anonymous | reply 241 | April 15, 2020 3:32 PM |
Well I hope that you all get a payment. Perhaps it's only currently working in "Where's My Payment" mode for those who have received and are slated to receive an ACH transfer. Maybe the link is not yet equipped to input personal banking information at this time. I'm thinking positive for you.

They're probably doing all the 1040 filers first, then they'll start on the 1099 and Soc. Sec. non-filers afterward.

They are sending it out via reverse income levels. The people that made the least should get their checks first. Military may already have them because of the way the military credit unions process payments.

[r248] I call bullshit and fake news. We are not at the bottom of earnings scale and we got our money today. The decision as to who gets their money direct deposited first has nothing.to do with income. But the paper checks sent by mail -- those will be sent out based on income.

Hopefully all the people who hate government handouts will decline their stimulus check and send it back. That's what you're going to do, right?

I'm on disability due to a bad accident and currently rehabbing in a facility where my disability check is no longer directly deposited in my bank account, but sent directly to the facility, where I only receive $50 a month from it. Does this mean I'm not eligible?

R266 you've obviously been there for more than 20 days then as Medicare pays 100% for 20 days of rehab in a nursing facility that has a rehab program. After that you're on your own along with Medicaid to pay to pay the costs. I'll bet your monthly bill from that facility is probably $6000.00 or more. They take all your Soc. Sec. (except for $50/mo) and Medicaid pays the rest.

Just spoke with a friend who said that stimulus status checker on the IRS site is now limiting the number of times you can check the status of your payment per day. He is a social security recipient and doesn't have to file taxes and said he got a message to the effect of...
"the tax return information you provided does not agree with our records or you have exceeded the number of times allowed per day, please check again later"
So it sounds to me like that site is only for those who've filed a tax return, and not for non-filers.

People are getting the "payment status not available" message when the details they’re entering don’t match exactly what the IRS has on file. If you’re still getting it, try entering you address differently, maybe it’s the way you abbreviated or used upper/lower case. Good luck.

by Anonymous | reply 331 | April 22, 2020 5:16 PM |
r331 I copied the check schedule from Forbes.com. Sorry but I don't know more than that.
I'd suggest you scroll up and find the "when do I get my check" link. Fill in your data there and see what it tells you. I'd assume if you haven't gotten direct deposit by now you probably will get a physical check in the mail. That's guessing but it makes sense to look into.
by Anonymous | reply 332 | April 22, 2020 6:13 PM |
I filled out the form for non-filers almost two weeks ago and still no word. I guess the non-filers are gonna have to wait longer since the government is getting info about people who they don't have a file on? I listed my income as $0, so am I even eligible?

I want to know why I still get the message about not knowing if I qualify. I clearly do and I filed for 2018. I had read SS payments would take place later in April so I'm standing pat. But I'm a little concerned...sorry Susan Collins.

But there are many other questions that linger for older Americans with social security and disability insurance.
"What we've been told is that the social security recipients will be getting theirs very, very soon."
So why weren't they in the first round of checks that went out last week? Sweeney said there was an extra step that caused a delay.
"The IRS needed to get their information from the Social Security Administration or the VA in order to get their payments out to them,” he explained.
And to clear up any confusion, Sweeney reassured that those beneficiaries do not have to fill out tax forms or any other paperwork.
"Those payments will be coming automatically and will likely be direct deposited into the same bank account where they get their payments right now."

But it's singed by someone else in a regional distribution office. I am surprised he didn't up the point size on the letters as well because it's the same size as the other text. But I did have to do a double take, it really is darker on the "Bold" setting of fonts and it really is all caps.

Scumbag cunt: Brooklyn Man Accused of Stealing Stimulus Checks Out of Mailboxes
A 31-year-old Brooklyn man is accused of stealing at least nine stimulus checks, along with credit cards and other checks, out of the mailboxes of homes and apartment buildings in the Sunset Park section of Brooklyn.
According to the criminal complaint and statements made in court Wednesday, police officers saw Chen look inside a medical collection bin at a closed medical office early in the morning on April 28. He then walked to a nearby residential building to examine the mail there, before walking into the gated area of another apartment building.
Chen appeared to be carrying mail when he left, which he tossed on the sidewalk when he saw the police, the criminal complaint read. The officers saw a large bulge in Chen's pocket and searched him, allegedly finding stimulus checks worth more than $12,000, along with stolen credit cards, bank checks, opened envelopes and letters with various names and mail addresses — believed to have been taken from other mailboxes.
One check allegedly stolen from a mailbox in the lobby of 868 45th Street was for $2,400. Police began tailing Chen after an alert resident flagged them to his alleged activity, and officers arrested him on Tuesday.
The NYPD initially charged Chen with possession of stolen property but investigators decided to increase the charges given the number of federal checks he allegedly stole. Federal prosecutors said they are charging Feng Chen with federal mail theft because of the postal-related nature of the scheme, as well as the fact that the Treasury checks were meant for workers in need amid the coronavirus crisis.
U.S. Attorney Richard Donoghue detailed the charges, which carry up to five years in prison, in a release Wednesday. "For many families, these stimulus checks are a lifeline in these difficult times and anyone who tries to cut that lifeline will face the full weight of the law," Donoghue said.
Chen's federal public defender, Jan Rostal, declined to comment about the charges filed.
Investigators said they believe Chen was actively stealing checks for more than a week before his arrest. Officials are now reaching out to the families believed victimized to explain to them why they never received their stimulus checks.

Hmmm, both my parents retired and get SSI through Direct Deposit to their banks, but they have not gotten anything. When you go to the IRS website to check they still get "your eligibility has not been determined" it sucks for them.
by Anonymous | reply 392 | April 30, 2020 1:01 AM |
R392, when your parents got IRS refunds, did they get it via direct deposit or mail? Because even though they get SSI via dd, you/they may have to set up dd for the stimulus check.
by Anonymous | reply 393 | April 30, 2020 1:12 AM |
R393, my parents don't file because, as I said, both are retired.
I wonder if SSI recipients won't get theirs until May or something.
by Anonymous | reply 394 | April 30, 2020 1:18 AM |
SSI recipients are supposed to get their checks in next week's big dole out.
by Anonymous | reply 395 | April 30, 2020 1:20 AM |
R394, I meant before they retired. Did they ever have direct deposit from the IRS? I'm asking because my parents are also retired and they used to get refund checks in the mail. They get direct deposit for their SS, but I actually had to put in their checking info on the stimulus site and they're getting it dd tomorrow. Just because your parents get DD for their SSI, doesn't mean the stimulus will go in there. You may have to set it up.
by Anonymous | reply 396 | April 30, 2020 1:22 AM |
R395, thank you. I'll let them know to check next week.
R396, they retired in 2011, They used to get it by mail I think. I was under the impression that Non-filers could only enter their banking info if they had a dependent under 17 or were going to file taxes. I am pretty sure it says so in the "Non-Filers: Enter Payment Information" section of the IRS website.
So my parents could enter their DD info regardless?
by Anonymous | reply 397 | April 30, 2020 1:29 AM |
SSI is welfare SSA is social security
by Anonymous | reply 398 | April 30, 2020 1:30 AM |
R397, I would recommend you check every day until you get a date as to when they're supposed to receive it to be sure *how* they'll actually receive it because all I know is that I'm going by what I saw when I kept checking for my parents and it stated that if I wanted dd, to put in their checking info so that they could get it quicker. R398, I left off the A, my bad.
I got the impression that unless you already had dd set up for IRS refunds/payment, you're not going to get a stimulus check via dd - you'll get it by mail.
by Anonymous | reply 399 | April 30, 2020 1:41 AM |
Shouldn't matter how they received IRS payment before retirement. I read SS recipients (who now do not file) will receive the stimulus payment exactly the way they get their monthly SS payments. So if it's DD, that's how they get it. If it's a check, that's what they will get. No action needed. And that's how it worked out for my mom today.
Now SSI--from what I recall reading, it's slightly different. Google it, there should be plenty on how it works for SSI recipients.
by Anonymous | reply 400 | April 30, 2020 1:42 AM |
If all of you received $1200 that means you make under $70k a year. So we now see how many DLers are lying about all their income they claim to have.
by Anonymous | reply 401 | April 30, 2020 1:48 AM |
[quote] SSI is welfare
No it is not. Welfare is only for families with dependent children. SSI is "suplemental security income" for social security recipients whose benefits are too low for them to live on it. SSI is a state benefit and SSA is a federal benefit.
by Anonymous | reply 402 | April 30, 2020 1:49 AM |
And SSI recipients who get their benefits direct deposit into their bank accounts will automatically get their stimulus payment by DD into the same account. The only reason I can think of they wouldn't would be if they didn't receive any soc. sec. payments at all due to never having paid into the system. And the percentage of people that would pertain to would be quite tiny.
by Anonymous | reply 403 | April 30, 2020 1:52 AM |
LOL, R401
by Anonymous | reply 404 | April 30, 2020 1:54 AM |
R403, my parents paid a shitload into the system - my father was a small business owner. They actually only started getting refunds towards the end of their working years. Their accountant used to send whatever they owed to the IRS and they never had direct deposit set up for the refunds they eventually started getting, so they'd get their refund checks in the mail.
Now that they're retired and they set up dd for their SS, I assumed they'd get the stimulus via dd because the govt already had their checking info, but when I went to check their stimulus status, they advised direct deposit - I found it weird, but I set it up anyway.
by Anonymous | reply 405 | April 30, 2020 2:03 AM |
I was under the impression they didn't have to do anything because SS already had their DD due to them receiving their retirement SSI through their bank accounts.
What is buffing is that they are both getting the same "we have not determined your eligibility..." shouldn't they be further along? Thanks to everyone for the sound advice. I'll tell mom and dad to keep checking everyday.

R405 I think you may have misstated what kind of benefits your parents are getting. SSI is for the very poor. That does not seem to fit your parents. I don't think your parents have anything to worry about. If they're getting their SS via direct deposit they'll get their money, probably in next weeks round of deposits.

by Anonymous | reply 423 | April 30, 2020 5:59 PM |
You're right, R423. One wonders if that poster even pays taxes? First, the full $1200 check goes to a single person who has an adjusted gross income, not total income, of $75,000 a year or less and not $70,000, so the numbers are off from the start.
Adjusted Gross Income (aka AGI) is one's income from all sources, not only salary, but also any other taxable income like interest, dividends, Social Security payments and the like: the items found on lines 7 through 22 on a 1040 tax return. Added together, this is one's total income. From that total, subtract your adjustments, also called “above-the-line deductions” and you have your AGI. These above-the-line deductions include the following:
Educator expenses (a deduction for certain expenses paid by teachers); certain job expenses of performing artists; unreimbursed job expenses of state and local officials paid on a fee basis; HSA (Health Savings Account) deduction; 50% of the self-employment taxes you paid (Social Security and Medicare taxes); contributions you made to retirement accounts, including contributions to a SEP, SIMPLE, 401(k) and other qualified retirement plans (if you’re self-employed); the amount you paid for health insurance during the year, limited to your net self-employment income; any penalty you paid on the early withdrawal of your money from a savings account; alimony paid; deductible contributions to an IRA; student loan interest; tuition and fees; and domestic production activities deduction (deductions for manufacturing, construction, engineering, and software businesses.)
It's easy to see that a single person could make considerably more than a $75,000 total income income and report an AGI on their 2018 or 2019 tax returns of less than $75,000 after these deductions and still qualify for the full $1200 stimulus payment.
Easy, that is, unless someone is trying to be snarky and falling on their face in the process.

IRS sending out stimulus checks to dead people. That alone isn't the most amazing part. The checks are made out to the person's name with 'DECD' next to the name, which obviously stands for deceased. They're also sending out letters to dead people telling them they've direct deposited their stimulus check into their bank accounts. The only problem is many of these bank accounts have been closed for years. So no one knows where the money ended up.
And of course Trump and Mnuchin are both acting like "big deal, shit happens".

Can I collect unemployment?
by Anonymous | reply 439 | May 3, 2020 4:54 AM |
R439 , 3 questions.
1) What state are you on?
2) how much money did you make last year?
3) If you didn't make money last year, how much money did you earn while working for you last employer who laid you off.
In California, you certainly qualify for unemployment if you worked part time. Even if you only qualify to receive $100 per week of unemployment, take into consideration that you will also get $600 per week as stipulated in the stimulus package that was approved by congress.
Don't waste any more time and apply now because you can lose the grace period of the UI application. Good luck.

R441, you can try and apply. What do you got to lose?
For example, I applied for unemployment on March 23rd, 2020 after the California closed down on March the 19th. I qualified through the standard process which is determined by the last 4 of the past 6 quarters.
I applied on March 23rd 2020, so the quarters that determined my eligibility were:
October 18, 2018 - December 18, 2018
December 19, 2018 - March 19, 2019
March 20, 2019 - June 19, 2020
and
June 20, 2019 - Sep. 19, 2020
Because I made money on at least one of those quarters, you only need one in California to qualify, I qualified for unemployment.
Apply through your state's unemployment and see what happens. Good luck.
by Anonymous | reply 444 | May 3, 2020 5:41 AM |
The only I could apply online and I can’t get any help over phone ( after waiting hours I got two clueless people) I think I screwed up on some of the tricky questions. One question was am I going to receive any more money I haven’t gotten my last paycheck so I put yes. Someone said it could be weeks before we get our first check so when my job told me I could have vacation pay I took it. We got the check sooner before my vacation pay a friend got two checks and I only got one. Now I’m worried I screwed myself out of two checks.
So Monday I’m going to spend more hours waiting on another clueless person. I live in Kentucky but work in Indiana.

by Anonymous | reply 446 | May 3, 2020 8:32 AM |
OP you may very well qualify for unemployment compensation but the company that fired you before you ever went to work and never paid you anything would not be calculated into the criteria you would qualify under. Remember, unemployment compensation is an insurance policy paid by your employer. If any particular employer never paid any premiums on your behalf to the system (even if they were required to) then you would not qualify based on that employment alone. There's a reason employers will fight any UI claim they feel is not warranted. The more claims approved against them, the higher their unemployment insurance rates go.
Here is a resource that can help you find out if you qualify for compensation in your state. As has been already stated, states set their own criteria.

When’s the next stimulus check since were all still sitting at home?
by Anonymous | reply 449 | May 4, 2020 1:29 AM |
I have to say I don’t get the point of sending $1200 to EVERYONE below a certain income level. That should target the newly unemployed only. Why hand out cash to retirees for example? They haven’t been financially hurt by this lockdown.
by Anonymous | reply 450 | May 4, 2020 1:34 AM |
except for raised prices on everything and having to pay for delivery of groceries with tipping like everyone else.
by Anonymous | reply 451 | May 4, 2020 1:40 AM |
No further payments as of yet. Congress will get into that when they reconvene

[quote]I have to say I don’t get the point of sending $1200 to EVERYONE below a certain income level. That should target the newly unemployed only
The newly unemployed already get unemployment money + 600 a week. So for example, in New Jersey you could get $713 + 600 = 1,313 per week or 5,252 per month! Compare that with a one time payment of 1,200 for 3 months.
People who have been unemployed for more that 6 months have no income at all. There are millions of people who have been unemployed for years I could see needing this money. Keep in mind, life is not the same for them either. Being in lock down, everything is costing more money. The first weeks of the pandemic, I tried to buy a bottle of rubbing alcohol and every place was sold out except for ebay which one guy wanted $40 for a half size bottle.

I meant to include all the unemployed in my comment, long-term and newly unemployed as well as underemployed should be the ones that get the $1200. My problem is the (some very comfortably) retired and others who haven’t been impacted financially by the shutdown. The ones who are talking about spending their $1200 on new kitchen appliances and other fun things, not using it to pay their rent or buy food for their kids. A lot of that trillion-dollar stimulus $$ was wasted on people who don’t need it.
by Anonymous | reply 456 | May 4, 2020 5:13 AM |
And btw I’m one of the people who didn’t need the $1200 for essentials (what it was supposed to help with) but am getting it anyway. That’s a waste of taxpayer dollars, handing millions of dollars out to people like me. It was reckless and overkill.

R439 here. I was hired for a part time customer service job. The company never gave me a schedule and then terminated my employment without explanation.
Can I collect unemployment?
I got an email notification of termination of employment on May 1. But the company listed my date of termination as April 7, 2020 which is the same day they hired me.
Are they trying to retroactively fire me and list the day of hire as the same day of termination?
I have supervisor email communications and supervisor virtual meetings logs and communication with the company up until April 29, 2020 to prove I was an employee until May 1, 2020.
Are they trying to deny paying me for the three-plus weeks they wasted my time?

How are homeless people without addresses getting their checks?
by Anonymous | reply 459 | May 4, 2020 7:47 AM |
R456/R457 I don’t need it. We’re both retired and we’ll do fine. There’s two of us, so it was two checks. It was very easy to donate it to charities we already support. Writing a check’s not that difficult.
I agree it shouldn’t have gone to everyone, but if someone does use it for necessities, great. If not, do some good with it. There’s more need all around us now so it’s just another form of recycling.
by Anonymous | reply 460 | May 4, 2020 12:19 PM |
R257, I think it had to do with the logistics of it.
It’s easier to see what people’s AGI was and send them a check vs. saying “well this one is an essential worker, so he doesn’t need it. This one is unemployed, so she needs it. This one is laid off, but his company may bring him back tomorrow because they’re essential, this one is retired but doesn’t collect social security yet....”
It’s much easier and quicker to send out a check to everyone who falls within the parameters of the income requirements.

Not capping it at what people were making prior to losing their jobs was a HUGE mistake. People will not look for new jobs while they can collect 2x what they were making. July is going to be interest when it all runs out.
by Anonymous | reply 462 | May 4, 2020 1:41 PM |
I agree, r462. In fact, I initially thought it WAS capped, but was proven wrong here on DL.
People are making more sitting home than if they were working. That doesn’t bode well for them wanting to come back quickly.
On the other hand, if their job opens back up and wants them back, if they refuse they’ll lose the weekly check from UI.
by Anonymous | reply 463 | May 4, 2020 1:45 PM |
R463 are you sure about the last paragraph? I thought the requirement was that you had to be actively searching. What if they don’t want that job but something different? If a company fires you, why should you be forced to work for them again? I don’t know all the details.
by Anonymous | reply 464 | May 4, 2020 2:10 PM |
Similar to R450's point, I don't understand why people on social security are getting stimulus money. Their monthly payments weren't interrupted.

[quote] That’s a waste of taxpayer dollars, handing millions of dollars out to people like me. It was reckless and overkill.
The money was meant as much for people (not just the unemployed or the poor) to prop up the economy as quickly as possible by spending it on goods, and not necessarily essentials.
by Anonymous | reply 467 | May 4, 2020 2:20 PM |
[quote] I thought the requirement was that you had to be actively searching. What if they don’t want that job but something different?
If a company lays you off, then calls you back and you refuse, you can’t exactly justify you’re searching for other employment. The UI people would say, “your search is over. You’ve found a jobs, it’s your old one.”
[quote]If a company fires you, why should you be forced to work for them again?
You’re not forced to work for them. But we’re not going to pay you to sit home because your principles won’t allow you to work for that specific company.

R464, let’s put it in a joking way, from the movie National Lampoon’s Vacation:
(Referring to Cousin Eddie’s unemployed status)
Clarke: You mean to tell me in seven years he could find a job?
Ellen: Catherine says he’s holding out for a management position.

r464, if you were laid off you have to accept the work that is now available. If your job offers you the same work you were qualified for you have to take it or you refused work and will lose benefits.

My check was direct deposited on April 15th.
The official government letter with Trump’s signature alerting me of the payment, came last week. Perfect timing as I had just run out of toilet paper.

The IRS website says that my check was "scheduled" to be mailed to me on Fri, May 1. Today is Mon, May 4 and the mail was delivered to my house this morning, but no check. I assume that Sat and Sun don't count -- so how many business days does it take for these checks to arrive? I'm in Calif, don't know where the checks are mailed from.
by Anonymous | reply 479 | May 4, 2020 11:03 PM |
I don't know about California, but in Atlanta it could easily take 5 business days for a letter to go across town. If it's certified, guaranteed 14 days...Things aint like they used to wuz on mail delivery.

You have to have a minimum amount of time on the job to qualify for unemployment R158. So being hired and fired the same day for a part time position means you're fucked.
by Anonymous | reply 481 | May 4, 2020 11:20 PM |
No, r481, you have to have a minimum amount of time working, not necessarily at the same job.
If he had a job before this most recent company, he still qualifies.
by Anonymous | reply 482 | May 4, 2020 11:23 PM |
R481 I wasn’t hired and fired on the same day although they try to make it look like that. I was hired on April 7 and they listed my firing as April 7 but didn’t notify me of my termination until May 1. But I was an active employee and complete prove it through correspondence and documents as an employee.

Give the money directly to the people since this pandemic it’s not their fault. Trumps Republican corporate welfare grifter should get nothing. They’ve got billions in reserves it’s not like they’re living paycheck to paycheck.
