Most New York Coronavirus Cases Came From Europe, Genomes Show
New research indicates that the coronavirus began to circulate in the New York area by mid-February, weeks before the first confirmed case, and that travelers brought in the virus mainly from Europe, not Asia.
“The majority is clearly European,” said Harm van Bakel, a geneticist at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, who co-wrote a study awaiting peer review.
A separate team at N.Y.U. Grossman School of Medicine came to strikingly similar conclusions, despite studying a different group of cases. Both teams analyzed genomes from coronaviruses taken from New Yorkers starting in mid-March.
The research revealed a previously hidden spread of the virus that might have been detected if aggressive testing programs had been put in place.

Trump's blockade of Chinese flights did little. The infections came from Europe long before any blockade

Makes sense. That's before Europe was taking the virus seriously, so lots of travel still happening between New York and Europe.

Lot of travel from Italy —> NYC Lots of trace China—-> Italy
Could be why West Coast not as bad
At one point one group was saying two variants L/S - and Italy got the deadlier variant but there are other scientists who say that isn’t so.

Should read Travel from China to Italy.

The Italians in the West coast are less likely to travel to Europe.
Thank god doe that!

And Joy behar wanted to go to Italy on vacation this month.
Whites go to Europe, come back to America and it ends up killing a bunch of minorities instead.
That's really fucked up.

Trump claims he acted early when, in fact, there were arguments for a month prior to that in the WH about what to do.
It took him a month and he blocked the wrong flights.

That's not saying the virus started in Europe though, right? It still came from China?
I also have to believe that there are 2 different strains - one that is more deadly that hit Europe and NYC, and another that hit US West Coast and the rest of Asia.
Either that, or because Asian countries and West Coast states acted sooner and are generally healthier?

I blame white people. Their always traveling.

China is widely believed to be lying about their death count. I've seen some speculation that Italy was hit so hard because they've been quite loose about the use of antibiotics over the years. In any case different European countries are hit very differently. Norway has seven times less deaths than Sweden although the virus started spreading there pretty much the same time. Is it a different strain or is it about the way the countries deal with restricting movement?

Fauci said recently that 50% of people testing positive are completely asymptomatic. So lots of people could have been moving around the world without feeling sick, etc. This study is no more specific than saying the DNA from earliest samples was of European origin--which is code for white, not Asian. We really don't know where the virus originated therefore. Probably northern Italy, but we really don't know based on what I've read. Also maybe the cases in Kirkland Washington nursing home were from across the Pacific--would make geographic sense, but I haven't seen anything about that. Obviously this virus has been in U.S. population for maybe a lot longer than we know. Would be interesting to read what epidemiologists are making of this European rather than Chinese origin.

r13 here: So I read some more about this, and I was wrong saying it just showed European vs Asian. They are very sophisticated apparently, and they could tell that the first patient in NY's strain came from England, and there were strains in other early cases from other parts of Europe and Western US. So there have been cases since at least January in NYC and probably before that. So maybe China got it from somewhere else? I have no idea. I guess it might take a long time to figure out if the disease really did originate in that Wuhan wet market. Or it seems that there are numerous mutations depending on country of origin. Don't know what to make of it all, but I'm not even close to being a scientist.

Maybe not, r14, but you’re doing great with researching it.

r13 again: So first case in Washington state was a Seattle-area 35-year-old man who had just come back from a trip to Wuhan, China. Shortly after that the nursing home epidemic in Kirkland, WA, probably from community spread.

Who is this 35 year old man? We need to see him and punish his ass.

And those Europeans got it from China.

It's all from China.
"Northern Italy has a very prosperous fashion and apparel industry. Many of the most famous brands around the world from Gucci to Prada originated in the region. As China has offered cheaper manufacturing for their apparel factories, more and more Italian fashion houses have outsourced work to China, and specifically to Wuhan.
Italy created direct flights from Wuhan and allowed over 100,000 citizens from China to move to Italy and work in their factories. In addition, as the Chinese became increasingly wealthy over the last two decades, more and more Chinese citizens moved to northern Italy to reside and many Chinese purchased Italian firms.
Today there are now more than 300,000 Chinese nationals living in Italy, according to Fortune Magazine, and over 90% of them work in Italy's garment industry."
That's the link right there - and then the Milan fashion shows were 2/18-2/24. Italy deaths began to spike on 3/8, which is roughly 13-20 days after the shows. Given the 14 day incubation period, do we NOT think these are related?

The first 3 known San Fernando Valley cases were tourists who had just returned from a ski trip to Italy.
Yes, it originated in China, but how many Americans went there in comparison to how many went to Italy?
