Spetters: Anybody Remember this Movie?

I had no idea when I went to see it.

Yes. I bought the dvd because it has rutger hauer and verhoven direction. I was surprised by the rape scene.

I've never seen this, though I do love Verhoeven's "The Fourth Man." Jeroen Krabbe was insanely sexy as the bisexual lead character, and there are two incredibly erotic scenes in the film: this one, where he briefly gets head from Thom Hoffman, and the other infamous church sequence with the crucifix-come-to-life.

There's at least one other really hot sex scene in Spetters where he follows a couple of guys into a train station and watches as one goes down on the other. And it was very graphic.

I was surprised that, during the rape scene, one of the rapists was totally hard.

A very graphic brutal film.

I'm an old fashioned guy when it comes to movies but I was pretty moved by it.

by Anonymousreply 6April 7, 2020 8:46 PM

Is the film where the three guys have a dick measuring contest or am I thinking of something else?

by Anonymousreply 7April 7, 2020 8:52 PM

R2 here. I broke out my DVD of "The Fourth Man", which I haven't watched in years. I rewatched it tonight and forgot how hot Jeroen Krabbe was; I also had no recollection of the fact that he goes full-frontal in the first five minutes. It's a great, dreamlike film, replete with plenty of Catholic nightmare imagery and steamy homoeroticism. I definitely need to give "Spetters" a watch.

I'm Dutch and have always wondered why they didn't translate the title of this movie. In my language, "spetter" means both something akin to "hunk" (with both terms being quite outdated) and "splatter" (as in a "splatter of paint"). I suppose the title is meaningless to English speakers?

Most if not all of the young actors cast by Verhoeven in this film went on to successful careers (though only Jeroen Krabbé achieved international success. All are household names in the Netherlands and I guess the movie is considered a minor classic.

I watched Spetters again a couple of months ago for the first time in 30 years - though somewhat messy its still a very powerful watch.

R3 so the rape scene is "really hot" and there is "another" really hot scene? Necrophilia?

by Anonymousreply 11April 8, 2020 9:28 AM

I was very aroused by the rape scene, and I would never say that out loud in real life.

Toon Agterberg played Eef. I always thought he was handsome. His story line was the most memorable to me.

I remember seeing both movies and loved the 4th Man. If you never seen the 4th Man definitely check it out. I think I originally saw Spetters on Bravo. As I don't remember so well anymore, I believe Bravo used to show R rated movies. This would have been back in the 70's. Anyone remember that?

R9 - I'm too lazy to look it up, but didn't one of the actors from Spetters later commit suicide?

by Anonymousreply 16April 8, 2020 1:17 PM

R16: yes, Hans van Tongeren (who played Rien) committed suicide at the age of 27, in 1982.

[quote]there are two incredibly erotic scenes in the film: this one, where he briefly gets head from Thom Hoffman

It would be nice to find out that the head scene in The Fourth Man was actually unsimulated. It looked pretty real.

R17 - I remember reading an interview with Verhoeven in which he said it took that actor forever to get even semi-hard in that scene he had with Renée Soutendijk.

From the director who later gave us the masterpiece Showgirls!

by Anonymousreply 20April 9, 2020 8:53 PM

Verhoeven is an amazing director, but man does he have a weird obsession with rape...

by Anonymousreply 21April 9, 2020 10:16 PM

R21, and wouldn't you know the only realistic moment in Showgirls was when Molly is gang raped. But the Michael Bolton icon's ass kicking is ridiculous and his two goons get off scot free.

Was Von Tongeren gay?
