Mathews retired from acting in 1978 and moved to San Francisco, where he ran a clothing and antiques shop. Mathews died in his sleep in San Francisco on July 5, 2007 at the age of 81. He was survived by his partner of 46 years, Tom Nicoll, a British display manager at Harvey Nichols, a British luxury department store, whom he had met in 1961.

Mathews starred in “The Three Worlds of Gulliver.”
There had already been an animated film version of “Gulliver’s Travels,” in 1939, but it was a musical, and veered much further away from the original book.
