That's a good one. She kept trying to. By the Sea was her most embarrassing blunder, especially in retrospect knowing what happened to their relationship.
Natalie Portman directed a film in Hebrew as well, and acted in it. I assume that was some type of prestige play, but I know she's very connected with her roots.

Chris Hemsworth - In the Heart of the Sea
by Anonymous | reply 16 | April 5, 2020 3:07 AM |
Wasn't In the Heart of the Sea just some generic Ron Howard action/drama? Felt more like an ensemble piece anyway.
What's that film that Chris Evans did with his then girlfriend Jenny Slate where he has a genius daughter? Gifted? That felt like some tepid, mid-00s indie Oscar bait on Evans' part.

"Wasn't In the Heart of the Sea just some generic Ron Howard action/drama? Felt more like an ensemble piece anyway."
It was based on an acclaimed book, so it was being touted as potential Oscar bait.....until it bombed and received terrible reviews
by Anonymous | reply 19 | April 5, 2020 3:14 AM |
Yeah, but you could tell it wasn't gonna be good from the trailer. Ron Howard hasn't made an essential film in ages.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | April 5, 2020 3:15 AM |
R15 Highly unpopular opinion but I thought the film was actually gripping and a believable depiction of a very sick individual . Lohan was OK in it. However, it was incredibly depressing and critics and audiences seems to hate it .

Anyone see Jack the Bear?. I didn't even know this film existed til a couple months ago when I saw the trailer. It definitely looked like a Robin Williams-style Oscar play by DeVito, which is admirable! I'm glad he shot his shot! Film seems to have fallen into obscurity, but I think it should be revived! Look at the fucking poster!

Blake Lively in The Town, though she was properly trashy in that and I bought it.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | April 5, 2020 3:45 AM |
R33 I can't imagine how upset Nona must've been that season! That was supposed to be her vehicle. I remember Whoopi's aorta line from the trailer. Remember Whoopi's aorta line from the trailer? That was good... I bet that scene from the trailer pre-won Angie that Oscar. Hell, I remember Britney Murphy getting more buzz from that film than Wino.
LET'S LOOK BACK AT WINO'S CAREER REALLY QUICKLY!
Tons of early praise, no? LAVISHED! Working with the best directors, and two Oscar noms back to back! Then nothing. They said no thanks. Never again. Did they regret it? Did they think they were seduced, and then tricked? Sometimes the Academy can get stingy like that, and withholding. I bet they turned on her. Oh she stole stuff right? Hard to come back from that, but she did and is on a hit show! GO NONA!

You gotta get specific, because they've been dramatically successful before. Carrey you gotta go with like... what... Number 23? Remember that bullshit? Sandler had Reign on Me, the 9/11 weepy, which didn't really go anywhere for him.

R51 Foxcatcher was a technically good and well acted film. But it's one of those movies that once I had seen once, I had no desire to ever watch again. Carrell was very good in Foxcatcher but I think he is a stronger comedic actor than dramatic one for the most part.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | April 5, 2020 11:59 PM |
I really liked Steve Carell in Foxcatcher. One person's opinion... But I always thought Demi Moore in G.I. Jane was a joke. That movie was stupid as hell but that head-shaving scene was ridiculous.

I'm tempted to say Pattinson in Lighthouse, as I thought that accent, character, and dialogue were a bit above him, but his physical enthusiasm, willingness to show off that hot bod, and the furious masturbation make it his best performance of all time, so I'm torn. I'll include it though.

Melissa McCarthy in that movie where she played the forger. There was a scene where she comes home to find a dead pet and it unintentionally played like a gross out comedy as she hugged it and cried.

R68 I totally agree. I remember watching it on TV about 20 years ago and not knowing anything about it. I thought it was the most hilarious things I had seen. I assumed it was like some kind of Naked Gun or Hot Shots style spoof of Sex Thrillers like Basic Instinct. It was only when I told my friend about this brilliant comedy I had watched he said "That's not a comedy its a drama".
I just remember really laughing when she was sat dressed as a boy at the self help group, as it was so random she had now chosen to start wearing men's clothes. I also remember thinking Lesley Ann Warren was doing a particularly campy piece, similar to the part she later played in Will and Grace.
