Kristen Bell: I Was Told I Wasn’t ‘Pretty Enough’ at Beginning of Career

Kristen Bell is looking back on her career.

During an interview with Vanity Fair, the 39-year-old actress recalled her early auditions and how most of her "feedback" was about her looks rather than her talent.

"I remember early on, getting feedback, that I wasn't enough in either category," Kristen said. "I would get feedback from an audition: 'Well, you're not pretty enough to play the pretty girl, but you're not quirky enough or weird enough to play the weird girl.'"

Kristen said that she was always left confused by these comments.

"I was like, 'Okay, does that just mean I can't be an actor? What does that mean,'" Kristen remembered thinking. "That's what I was getting feedback on, on every audition."

Kristen said that over time, things have luckily changed in Hollywood.

"I think as I've grown older, those boxes have changed... and [have] almost gone away," Kristen said. "It's this huge gray area now of all these beautiful stories you can tell... that have dimensional people that don't have to be one thing."

Kristen is cute but not necessarily conventionally "pretty", and at times can look downright homely. I recently watched "The Lifeguard" in which she goes makeup-free throughout, and it really showcased her plainness. She has a very angular, square face—large forehead, and her eyes are positioned close together. She is certainly not ugly by any stretch of the imagination, but she's very average-looking. Fortunately, she has enough talent that it doesn't really matter. She's had a good career.

She's insufferable. She's always out complaining about something or another

It's always something with her. And she tries way, way, way too hard to come across as funny. She always desperately trying too hard to tell some bullshit, made up story on talk shows. She's always got the "story to end all stories" about something crazy that her kids or her husband did to her

A very bland blonde. If you put her next to Elizabeth Hasselbeck, you'd see double.

You can be a nice, non-threatening, (slightly bitchy in the best sense of the word), girl's girl!

by Anonymousreply 4April 2, 2020 8:27 AM

I think they were just being nice by not breaking it to her that she can't really act.

by Anonymousreply 5April 2, 2020 8:48 AM

Oh get over yourself. You’re rich, pretty enough, blonde and skinny. Why can’t these celebs shut up? No one cares.

She is an excellent singer. Her strength is Broadway/Disney style singing.

I thought she was pretty in Burlesque.

Kristen, you're pretty enough.

by Anonymousreply 9April 2, 2020 10:00 AM

She's pretty but not hollywood attractive, she has that faux neus blonde blue eyed failed actress look.

by Anonymousreply 10April 2, 2020 10:03 AM

And they was right.

by Anonymousreply 11April 2, 2020 10:12 AM

Lol i was going to make a thread about the fight she had with Dax. I hope she was exaggerating about the blackout.

R1 hit it on the nose but the pic R8 put up is very nice

by Anonymousreply 13April 2, 2020 11:34 AM

Thank goodness for nepotism.

by Anonymousreply 14April 2, 2020 11:43 AM

She was always a cute girl and a good actress. Just needs to get rid of that awful husband ughh

by Anonymousreply 15April 2, 2020 1:17 PM

Thoughts and prayers for this devastating news.

by Anonymousreply 16April 2, 2020 1:25 PM

She looks like Beverley 'Plymouth Valiant' Mitchell's hotter sister.

I, for one, am sick and tired of seeing her bland blondeness on so many commercials. She's like the 'it' girl of middle-aged white women for all of these products.

I don't get it. And yes, she tries so hard to be funny all the time. She is pleasant enough, but I don't get the fever about her.

And Kristen, almost EVERYONE isn't pretty enough. Have you SEEN the Hollywood transformations of most stars from when they were in high school? It's a shallow industry. Tell that story to Patti LuPone or Meryl Streep or Glenn Close - they really had to work against not being pretty enough.

by Anonymousreply 19April 2, 2020 1:49 PM

She's started doing commercials because she's hitting 40 soon and knows that's often the sell-by date on cute Hollywood blondes, so she's making hay while she can. She shouldn't worry so much, though: she's a reasonably talented actress and middle-aged fraus love her. She'll be able to ride that train well into her 60s. I foresee at least a couple more successful sitcoms/dramedies in her future.

You hateful cows must be isolating alone, can't imagine anyone with a choice on this planet would choose to be around such negative cunts. Kristen is a very very good looking woman. Fact.

Is The Lifeguard any good?

That comment doesn't make any sense at all. Half-eaten pie?

To me, she's the actress you hire when you can't afford Reese Witherspoon. Same look, same attitude.

by Anonymousreply 24April 2, 2020 4:46 PM

She has lovely skin, a dazzling smile, and great bone structure. She's short, but being a midget is no issue in Hollywood, and she's never had a weight problem.

Her main drawback is that her eyes are very small and too close together, which can give her a hard, plain look. That's why even in her less glamorous roles, like on The Good Place, she's wearing tons of eye makeup and false eyelashes. Anything to make her eyes seem less beady.

Since aside from that she's great looking, a decent actress, and a better-than-average singer/dancer with considerable charisma, it's no wonder she made it. A lot of stars have one or two weird features that make them distinctive, like Reese Witherspoon's chin or Emma Stone's freakishly large eyes.
