Uh-oh: Elton John calls newly 'nonbinary' Sam Smith 'he'
"sam smith goes by they/them pronouns! even if you don’t like sam smith, you could at least respect their pronouns. it costs nothing to be a decent human being and be respectful to others." Another fan stressed: "Sam Smith doesn’t “prefer” they/they pronouns. They USE they/them pronouns it’s not fucking optional. You’re letting your transphobia slip."
IT'S NOT FUCKING OPTIONAL, PEOPLE!
Sam Smith is not a man, they are nonbinary and if they have asked people to use a certain set of pronouns, especially in such a public way, then that should be listened to and followed as such or you're just causing [bold]unnecessary anguish[/bold] and dysphoria, which is horrible
LITERAL ANGUISH!

If it wasn't optional you wouldn't be able to choose what you want to be called. You pick an option and it is our option whether we use it or not.

They wouldn't let me be 'Dame Elton', so he doesn't get to be called 'they'!

Figures DL would side with Elton who sang at Rush Limbaugh's wedding.

I don’t think Elton did it maliciously. It’s possible he didn’t even know that they uses non-binary pronouns. Notice that Sam has not spoken out against it- it is only their fans who have their knickers in a twist.

Fixed.

Sam looks ok in that picture. He does not look too bad in it. He doesn’t even need to cut his hair. Why doesn’t he smile more often though? He might need to get over himself. Can't say I’m fond of him.

If he is going to ask us to call him "they," shouldn't he refer to himself as "we"?

Smith calls himself a "non binary". I call him a "non entity".

I'm actually quite grateful to Sam Smith for announcing that "they" are non-binary, because "they" have shown the wider public how ridiculous the entire concept (which previously was largely unheard of outside of ultra-woke circles) is.

Pronoun crazies should understand that gay men will start humouring their bullshit when they drop the homophobia, histrionic posturing, and takeover of all our spaces. Until then, fuck them, die in a rainbow grease fire.

Why is it so difficult to refer to Sam as they wish to be called? What harm does it do to anyone to say, “They will be performing in their apartment?”
It’s not asking for much. Just showing another person some kindness and dignity.

Good point. For that matter, what harm does it do to anyone to say "He will be performing in his apartment?"

R36, I used to think the same way as you - but now I see that if you give the trans community an inch, they'll take a mile. If you agree to use someone's "preferred pronouns", you're tacitly agreeing that they have the right to be seen as the opposite sex (or, as in Smith's case, neither sex/both sexes). Complying with preferred pronouns implies that it's wrong to acknowledge someone's actual sex if they don't want you to. And when you take that to its logical conclusion, it's also wrong to say trans "women" don't belong in women's prisons or shelters or sports divisions. I'm not generally a fan of the "slippery slope" argument, but I do think it applies here.

R39, thanks for your response; I normally don’t go for the slippery slop arguments either. Sam isn’t trans though, right? They’re non-binary. I don’t think they will be competing in track meets or any kind in the near future either. But I see your point.
I think sports and locker rooms should be divided by biological sex too, but I still think it doesn’t hurt us to refer to people by how they wish to be called.

R40, non-binary identity falls under the "trans umbrella" according to organisations such as Stonewall. It aligns with the idea that your gender identity somehow makes your sex irrelevant, which is the premise being used to erode the right to single-sex spaces.
And as R43 points out, this kind of nonsense is turning the left wing into a laughing stock. It's a gift to Trump and his ilk.
