“Umbrella” by Rihanna turns 13 Years Old Today
Happy Birthday to the song that propelledRihanna into International Superstardom, went to #1 and won her a Grammy (her first).
It was the lead single off her third album “Good Girl Gone Bad”, an album that would sell millions and have many hit singles.
What is your favorite RiRi song?

I always thought Rehab was underrated. Diamonds is still great though. If I recall correctly Umbrella was originally written for Britney Spears.

R1 she passed on it so they reworked it for Rihanna. Britney’s version would have sounded different.

Unfaithful is another good Rihanna song. It's cheesy but so enjoyable.

I love Rehab r1. It’s a good song and I think she looks great in the video.
Justin Timberlake wrote it. Hence his being in the video

Disturbia reminds me of being 24/25, dancing at the gay clubs, and never needing to buy a drink or ever going home alone. So probably that one.

[quote]What is your favorite RiRi song
I can't pick just one. There's "Pour It Up", "You're da One", "Birthday Cake", "Work, "Kiss It Better", "Rude Boy", "Bitch Better Have My Money".
But "Umbrella" was the first banger and the Travis Barker remix is just as good.

Definitely one of the greatest pop songs of the last 20 years; it sounds as fresh today as it did when it first came out. Even Jay-Z's part worked perfectly (and I usually hate "featured" rap artists on these tracks).
And just like R7 I have nostalgic, club-related memories of Disturbia: it seemed to have been on repeat in the club the night I first got drunk (but the gang I was hanging out with back then was mostly of Serbian origins, so when we sang along to the track we changed "Disturbia" with "Serbia"). Good times...

I never really thought about her much although Umbreella is one of my favorite songs. I’m watching Seth Meyers who said she gave 5 million dollars to Coronavirus charity. He showed a old clip of her at better times and she was Utterly charming. I can see why Beyonce is jealous of her.

My favorite Rihanna song is definitely Kiss It Better and my favorite album, ANTi. It's an utter masterpiece that transcends the borders of "pop music". She should have won (been nominated?) for Album of the Year for Anti. I forget if it was even nominated.

R44...She had six Grammy nominations for Anti, but didn’t win not one award...if you remember she was drinking from a flask during the ceremony. It was Adele’s year to win all the major awards...she apologized to Beyoncé for winning album of the year during her speech.

Just to add one more thing about ANTI...it’s STILL charting on the Billboard 200 albums. As of this week it has spent 214 weeks on the Billboard album chart...Iconic! No Adele or Beyoncé albums are on the chart.

ANTI the album (not the singles) was considered a dud when it came out but it has slowly gone triple platinum. In this day and age, those are impressive album sales for anyone not named Adele.

R44, I think Anti holds up better than Adele’s or Beyoncé’s. Definitely an underrated pop gem.
Rihanna should have been a handful-hit wonder, petering out somewhere between 2009 - 2012. I won’t never have imagined she would still be relevant in 2020 and a mogul outside of the music industry!
