Rhode Island Police to Hunt Down New Yorkers Seeking Refuge
Rhode Island police began stopping cars with New York plates Friday. On Saturday, the National Guard will help them conduct house-to-house searches to find people who traveled from New York and demand 14 days of self-quarantine.
“Right now we have a pinpointed risk,” Governor Gina Raimondo said. “That risk is called New York City.”
New York is the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in the U.S., on Friday reporting a total of 44,000 cases.
Rhode Island has just over 200, and it has begun an aggressive campaign to keep the virus out and New Yorkers contained, over objections from civil liberties advocates.

Unless or until martial law is declared, this is unconstitutional. Citizens in these United States are free to travel.

The civil liberties advocates are evidently willing to cut off their nose to spite the face. Team Rhode Island here.
P.S. I didn't click on your link. That message about unusual activity being detected on your computer network made me a bit wary.

All the states are going to need to do likewise to prevent their states from being like New York. They can apologize later. New York isn't doing enough to stop the spread.

Wow this is crazy and scary
I can't believe so many idiots still aren't taking this virus seriously

I live in CT just over the NY border. You cannot believe the cars with NY license plates jamming our roads, parking lots, etc. Ransacking our Costco and grocery stores. Stay home you motherfucking assholes and stop bringing your shit to CT!

[quote]Unless or until martial law is declared, this is unconstitutional.
So is "sheltering in place" and "social distancing. Citizens' constitutional rights went out the window the nanosecond governments began ordering them, and worse, citizens will now be fined, if not in compliance. What's one more unconstitutional action in the scheme of things.

No, JB, we’re not. But you’ve heard the old adage, “First they came for the Jews....”
Besides, we’ve even given them an out: declare martial law, then you’re OK, and I honestly wouldn’t have a problem with that. But, regardless of the reason they’re telling you now for doing it, you cannot ban travel, and you certainly can’t ban travel of people from ONE specific state coming to your state.
What precedent can be set for a republican governor to declare in the future that he doesn’t like Chinese people, so they’re not allowed in his state? Or blacks? Or gays? Let’s not go down a slippery slope of unconstitutionality without going about it the right way.

How can they even enforce such a thing?
I’m from New York, get stopped by the police: “I just got here, Officer, but I’ll quarantine as soon as I get where I’m going. I promise.”
It’s nothing more than an attempt at appearing to be doing something, anything.

So you live in the New York metro region, your economy still largely revolves around the city, and you are going to complain about seeing NY plates? I mean I live on the other side of the NY border in Jersey, I get it. But we are all in this together.

R12 If you had bothered to read the article, it mentions police taking contact information. That's how they're enforcing the governor's order. State Police are stopping NYers at the state line and taking names, etc., and then kicking ass via the National Guard as the follow-up to make sure people are complying with the quarantine.
Covid-19 shows no signs of abating anywhere in this country, and the more desperate the situation is bound to become, the more desperate the measures will be in response. There is the very real possibility of a domino effect, where not just the healthcare infrastructure collapses, but government from the local level on up into the heart of Washington DC. Let's not even think about the economy.
The last-resort check valves we have in place to prevent complete anarchy is martial law and military intervention. The US is probably the most fiercely individualistic country on Earth, and with that sort of collective mentality of resistance to conformity, things are looking rather bleak. China and South Korea we are not.

And yet you don’t see a problem with that blatant violation of the 4th Amendment, r16?!
The police have no right to your information unless you’re suspected of committing a crime. Where does it end? If things are as dire as you proclaim, declare martial law and be done with it.
