Jennifer Lopez’s opinion on her fellow actresses in a 1998 interview

Cameron Diaz? "A lucky model who's been given a lot of opportunities I just wish she would have done more with. She's beautiful and has a great presence, though, and in My Best Friend's Wedding, I thought, 'When directed, she can be good.'"

Gwyneth Paltrow? "Tell me what she's been in? I swear to God, I don't remember anything she was in. Some people get hot by association. I heard more about her and Brad Pitt than I ever heard about her work."

Claire Danes? "A good actress. Her emotional and inner life are available to her, which is a good start. But I feel like I see a lot of the same thing with every character she does. She's not that way in U-Turn, though."

Winona Ryder? "I was never a big fan of hers. In Hollywood she's revered, she gets nominated for Oscars, but I've never heard anyone in the public or among my friends say, 'Oh, I love her.' She's cute and talented, though, and I'd like her just for looking like my older sister, Leslie."

Madonna? "Do I think she's a great performer? Yeah. Do I think she's a great actress? No. Acting is what I do, so I'm harder on people when they say, 'Oh, I can do that--I can act.' I'm like, 'Hey, don't spit on my craft.'"

J-Lo makes Camille Paglia seem nurturing.

by Anonymousreply 1March 28, 2020 11:02 AM

Her comments present a great opportunity to appreciate Claire Danes’s ‘limited range.’

My So-Called Life: angsty, awkward grungy teen

Romeo + Juliet: lovelorn, beautiful teen

Brokedown Palace: Wrongfully imprisoned teen

The Hours: Zenful but concerned, supportive daughter

Stardust: Ethereal, strongwilled fallen star

Temple Grandin: Autistic cattle ranching genius with panic attacks

Homeland: Badass, often ugly mentally unstable CIA agent

That doesn’t count Little Women, Les Meserables and others. She’s one of Hollywood’s all-time most unsung great actresses.

Jennifer Lopez, she’s pretty.

by Anonymousreply 2March 28, 2020 12:02 PM

r2 You’re not unsung when you have three Emmy Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards. She gave up on My So Called Life too soon for a movie career that quickly fizzled our after the successful Romeo + Juliet. I think she’s also claimed that she passed on Titanic which was a bad career move. It’s not a writing masterpiece but it would have opened doors and made her an A-lister. Kate Winslet has only started a handful of mainstream films in her career and she’s still been permanently A-list because of that film. Kate Winslet also took a lot of other early 2000s American roles I think Claire Danes would have done well in too.

Meanwhile, Claire’s prime(youth and attractiveness wise) was spent giving great performances in mediocre films. I guess she had a bad agent? She finally turned it around by going back to TV but now she’s wasted a great deal of her remaining youth on a show that’s been beneath her for the last 4-5 seasons. I guess it’s because the checks are good and she has a family to support? The show is finally ending this year but she’s 40 now so it’s a bit late to turn herself into the A-list leading lady. She’s still securely B-list and young enough to get good, meaty roles. Maybe she’s excepted the bring screen isn’t for her and she’ll do a Netflix/Hulu series next. She’s like a slightly prettier Elizabeth Moss.

R3 She may have awards, but I still think she is underappreciated as an actress. Even I usually don’t think of her when I consider great actresses of her era (Nicole Kidman, Gwyneth Paltrow (yes, I said it), Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett, Renee Zellweger) but then when she comes to mind I always think of her among their company. She just seems to have less of a public movie star persona but she can play plain, pretty, homely, dignified and regal, rough and ragged, brilliant and naive, all seemingly with ease. She’s extremely versatile and always convincing.

by Anonymousreply 4March 28, 2020 12:27 PM

JHO is a jealous no talent hack who can't sing or act. She's 5 clicks above Meghan Markle's level of acting. Just barely.

by Anonymousreply 5March 28, 2020 12:33 PM

Jennifer Lopez had a broad range...chubby at 25, strikingly gorgeous at 50.

This concludes Jennifer Lopez’s range.

by Anonymousreply 6March 28, 2020 12:38 PM

r4 Well as I said, that’s all due to the roles she took in the late 90s and early 2000s. Talent means nothing if the parts/films aren’t good. She gets her due from the public and the industry when she stars in something worthy of talent. It can’t be argued that My So Called Life and Romeo + Juliet aren’t huge parts of 90s nostalgia. Homeland was quite popular for a while. She’s had her moments in the sun, they’re just few and far in between a lot of mediocre stuff.

by Anonymousreply 7March 28, 2020 12:51 PM

Hey, R4, I would include Frances McDormand in that group.

by Anonymousreply 8March 28, 2020 2:14 PM

R8 Isn’t she older? She seems like a baby boomer in my mind. All the others are gen X.

by Anonymousreply 9March 28, 2020 2:17 PM

r9 Yeah, she’s 62. I wouldn’t put her in that age group either.

by Anonymousreply 10March 29, 2020 12:10 PM

I remember the interview it was in Movieline which had a way of getting people to say regrettable things, I loved that publication. Lopez... wasn't wrong but no one has ever said she is a great actor and the idea she deserved an Oscar for that boring jiggle movie was laughable.

by Anonymousreply 11March 29, 2020 1:09 PM

Jlo thought she should have won the 2007 Oscar for that Spanish movie she did with Marc Anthony. She claimed the Academy didn't bother to watch it, thus denying her a nomination.

by Anonymousreply 12March 29, 2020 1:27 PM

Jho is neither talented or beautiful. Even with all that slap.

by Anonymousreply 13March 30, 2020 12:43 PM

Oh come on, you can't say she's not gorgeous. That is the one thing she has going for her. Jennifer Lopez is a beautiful looking creature.

This is the worst she has been caught looking, without makeup or hair. She's gorgeous. Her voice is more limited than Madonna's. Her dancing is poorer than Madonna's. Her acting is a little better than Madonna's. But she is a stunner.

J lo is just like madonna: mad ambition not much talent

by Anonymousreply 15March 30, 2020 1:42 PM

the only thing I liked JLO in was Selena and that had more to do with liking the source material

by Anonymousreply 16March 30, 2020 2:09 PM

Oh, brother.

by Anonymousreply 17March 30, 2020 2:20 PM

Jlo never really got her boobs out in her career. Just once in Money Train and again in U-Turn, even then she was being jumped by mongers Wesley Snips and greasy Sean Penn so diminished the overall impact. If she'd shown them off more then she might have been offered better roles. They were delectable.

by Anonymousreply 18March 30, 2020 4:45 PM

[R14] she has beautiful warm coloring even with no makeup. Where is the yellow bone troll?

by Anonymousreply 19March 30, 2020 5:26 PM

Have any of you marys seen Out of Sight. She was brilliant in that.

by Anonymousreply 20March 30, 2020 9:14 PM

JLo is gorgeous but she didn’t always look like JLo. Back in her Flygirl days she was chubby with wild curly hair dyed too black, thick black eyebrows and pasty white skin. None of the JLo glow of today.

by Anonymousreply 21March 30, 2020 9:26 PM

Brilliant is a strong word R20. She was good and she peaked in that.

by Anonymousreply 22March 30, 2020 9:39 PM

R21 this is chubby? She looks fit to me.

by Anonymousreply 23March 31, 2020 4:26 AM

JLo got famous by fucking all the right black guys. That's her only real talent.

by Anonymousreply 24March 31, 2020 5:27 AM

R11 I keep hearing that about Movieline, but the only example given is usually this JLo interview. Were there any other PR bombs of this caliber?

by Anonymousreply 25March 31, 2020 5:40 AM

r23, to fully appreciate her chubbiness, you need to watch the earliest videos of her on ILC. The word that comes to mind is thick.

R14. That is not the worst. She is unexceptional-looking and greatly helped by professionally applied makeup. Someone on another site said she looks like unseasoned chicken without makeup, LOL.

She does have a nice complexion here.

by Anonymousreply 27March 31, 2020 6:30 AM

She is nowhere near gorgeous r14, ever. Cindy Crawford in her prime was gorgeous. Linda Evangelista was gorgeous. Jennifer doesn't come close. She's very plain and average. You pass prettier girls in the street.

by Anonymousreply 28March 31, 2020 6:34 AM

r28, not sure I would agree. Cindy and Linda were amazing but each has a totally different type of beauty. JLo was the OG Big Ass with a twist of Puerto Rican too! She ushered in curves bodies and caramel skin all by herself. So, just different kinds of beauty. Most men don’t find Linda attractive at all but want to bang JLo.

by Anonymousreply 33March 31, 2020 6:50 AM

r33 Lies

by Anonymousreply 34September 26, 2020 11:14 AM

She's a butterface.

by Anonymousreply 35September 26, 2020 12:04 PM

Movieline was legend for getting these types of interviews. I remember this one and recall being surprised Lopez made any success in the entertainment industry, she was right but this is much shit talking.

by Anonymousreply 36September 26, 2020 1:21 PM

And yet no one can pull up another instance of "these types of interviews" Movieline was "legend" for, R36.

by Anonymousreply 37September 26, 2020 1:51 PM

Stephen Dorff bashing all his peers, specifically Chris ODonnell.ODonell mocking his too intense peers and sidestepping Dorffs put downs, very funny stuff .

by Anonymousreply 38September 26, 2020 1:58 PM

After this interview, Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow pointedly, with deliberate obviousness, exited the room when JLo appeared at a party thrown by some "A" List power-agent.

I envision both at that party, sitting together, whispering about JLO "Mean Girl" style. Of course, now those two don't speak to each other, speculation being that Paltrow hit on Guy Ritchie.

Anyway, that's all I remember reading in that old gossip rag, Vanity Fair.

by Anonymousreply 39September 26, 2020 2:07 PM

[quote]if Selena didn't die she would be working at taco bell.

Selena or Jennifer?

by Anonymousreply 40September 26, 2020 3:39 PM

Wow DL is way too picky. The HD photo isn't even bad for mid 40s and in the direct sun.

by Anonymousreply 41September 26, 2020 3:46 PM

She's 100% right about GOOP, who would be doing Hallmark Holiday movies if it weren't for her connections.

by Anonymousreply 42September 26, 2020 3:49 PM

WTF? Selena was a superstar with talent and good looks!

by Anonymousreply 43September 26, 2020 5:00 PM

r43 She was too Mexican. She would have never been a star

by Anonymousreply 44January 4, 2021 12:08 PM

At least Jello has a great body, that's about it.

I did enjoy her in that movie where she was stalked by her crazy controlling husband, think it was called ENOUGH?
