Why did Janet Jackson's career sink?!

It's usually said that the most loyal fanbase is girls and gay men but I think as artists age, if they don't have old white males as a fanbase, their touring ability suffers, especially in venues above theatres (arenas, stadiums etc.). Also dancers age out quicked than singers.

Same thing that has happened to Madonna and other female music artists of 1990's and early 2000's, JT has aged and world has moved on to an extent.

JT is 53, and while not old per se; it can seem almost ancient when trying to appeal to an audience that either wasn't born when you were in your prime, or barely out of elementary school.

If any of these performing artists had real actual singing talent they could take pages from Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald and scores of others who continued to release work and had decent enough careers until the end. Even Frank Sinatra manged to knock it out of the part with his Duets recording.

Yeah Janet was essentially an A list pop star from, what, 1986 until the 2004 Super Bowl? I guess you could argue that All for You marked the end of tenure at the top, but even then 15 years is an awesome run.

Yeah Janet had/has an a noteworthy career either way. I view her as the last chapter in the Jackson music era, which pretty much dominated music for almost 40 years. R&B was already in decline in the mid 2000s as hip-hop took over, so even without the Superbowl, Janet's career would've cooled off anyway. All For You was such an awesome album I feel like its pretty overlooked in Janet's body of work.

Madonna's sound has always changed and moved forward, for better or worse. Madonna can actually sing. Spare me the bullshit that she can't. She can. Live and in the studio, Madonna has shown time and again she has the chops. She's no Whitney but she is no Janet. She can sing circles around Janet.

Janet has no talent. She can dance but it is the same robotic military moves her brother did. Her sound did change a bit but then her progression stopped. She doesn't have the voice to carry a long career. She has some great songs but her output since the late 90's has been stunted. Even playing the hits, she can't fill up but small arenas. And even then, she has trouble putting asses in seats.

Janet was one of the least talented singers ever. She also had a lot of luck and connections throughout her life. Despite that, she had good producers, which are hard to find in Minneapolis. At a time when gay men were oppressed beyond belief, they identified with her struggles and she theirs.

The music business is brutal. Stars age out usually by the end of their 20s up to mid-30s unless it's some classic icon or rock band. Janet had a MUCH better career than most and was, at one time, probably the biggest star in the business. Plus as others point out, she is more of a stage performer and has a thin voice. Those types don't do as well.

Why have Janet's concerts been cancelled? It's not like one couldn't socially distance at them.

She was good at her thing, which was the Jackson thing. She and Michael both had major pop-rock presences, which is really interesting in retrospect because there aren’t a whole lot of black performers who operate in that genre. They still stand out in a lot of ways. But their music was a very specific type of rock/R&B hybrid that doesn’t really exist any longer. It’s an outdated sound.

Pop music still sounds essentially like pop music. Pop from the 80s, 90s, 2000s, 2010s and now is recognizable as pop even though style has changed a lot.

The same can be said for rock, R&B, hip hop, rap, country.

The Jacksons sounded distinctively like themselves, and that sound now belongs to a bygone era. Michael Jackson is dead, and I think his death more or less made the whole Jackson enterprise part of the past.

More of the “Jackson sound”—rapid percussion and electric guitars.

And as good as both Janet and Michael were at their kind of dancing, un retrospect, it’s a very boy band/girl group type of formation dancing that feels a little dated, or if not dated, then at least feels silly for adults to be doing. Leave it to BTS and the teeny boppers to move like this.

Every time Madonna released a new video, it was an event. FFS, her videos made the national news on a number of occasions.
