I live in Hell's Kitchen in NYC. I've been going to work every day (essential business here) going to grocery stores, out and about as much as I can. I have large staff staff at my work. NO ONE has tested positive or even knows any one that has. WTF are we doing?
Reality Check Re: Covid -19
by Anonymous | reply 120 | March 27, 2020 4:23 PM |
New York has ~15K infected people so far - an tiny number relative to the population, but a catastrophic number of highly infectious people who may require hospitalization and intensive care.
Also, if you knew anything about how infectious diseases spread, you'd know that the number escalates more rapidly the more people that get infected - it is geometric growth.
Only a fool would not recognize that the only way to prevent an all out horror show is to prevent new infections from hitting the steep part of the curve.
Exactly how many hospital beds, ventilators, and doctors do you suppose there are to treat sick people.

Well, I doubt you are well-versed in how infectious diseases spread since you, you know, can't even spell it.
Also, if you understood how it works, you'd know that once it hit's the steep part of the growth curve, there won't be enough people left to work or spend money to make having an economy matter.

Anyway, I am bouncing from this thread, don't need to take the trollbait.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 25, 2020 2:30 AM |
Trollbait, pure and simple. "Reality" is that the economy won't recover until the virus crisis is fully under control and people can safely return to work. The government could mitigate this by ensuring salaries for those laid off, and expanding unemployment benefits for a few months. If that were done, everyone would be able to go back to work and business could pick up where they left off. Sadly, our feebleminded leaders will never do it. They'd rather sacrifice lives in hope of reducing future social security costs...
by Anonymous | reply 21 | March 25, 2020 2:35 AM |
Fuck off OP. My sister in law's nephew lives in Lower Manhattan and he's fighting for his life in a hospital with a confirmed case of COVID19. And three of his firends tested positive.

OP consider yourself, your colleagues, and your friends rather lucky. I no longer live in NYC, yet all of my friends there either know someone, work with someone, or have other businesses in their office buildings with COVID-19 victims. Though those buildings have been disinfected, or deep cleaned, many of the offices belonging to other companies have chosen to shut down operations: essential staff all work from home now.
I also know a few Wall St. people who reside in Westchester Cty: they all either have friends and family, neighbours, and colleagues who are down for the count with virus. I would ordinarily say in a snarky manner "You need to get put more"... however, that really is not advised presently!
Tell us how you really feel and think... Democrat elaborate hoax? False flag event, replete with "crisis actors", or an Illuminati/Rothschilds'/Jesuits' and Masons' hoax to install The New World Order? It's sadly all very, very real mate.

OP, listen to the mayor of Walton, Kentucky, who posted on Facebook.
"Listen up dipshits and sensible people," Brown wrote Monday night in a post on Facebook's popular Boone County Neighborhood Group. "I might not have the best bedside manor. (sic) I might not put you at ease like the Governor does, but I don’t care. You need to realize that this is a serious ordeal. In fact, it’s a big f**cking deal. Stay at home."
by Anonymous | reply 24 | March 25, 2020 2:57 AM |
I am not OP but could kinda agree - except that doctors and hospitals are already feeling overwhelmed and the numbers are just picking up. I could agree with OP except for that. I do not want to see hospitals overwhelmed and people who can’t be cared for - which it seems we are heading towards in the next week or two. Even though I don’t know anyone infected either, I’m willing to do everything to prevent that - and reassess in 3-4 weeks post-lockdown to see what happens.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | March 25, 2020 3:05 AM |

[quote] R15/OP : However, we cant't let our economy crash or our country go into a depression to save the lives of a few thousand...
It’s potentially millions, not thousands. It’s more people than died in all the US wars, from 1776 forward; plus all American deaths in the 1917-1920 influenza pandemic, combined. That is a bigger financial disruption than shutting down non-essential commerce for a few weeks. Plus we’ll lose the most experienced among us.
And, it is ugly to even think of it.

by Anonymous | reply 30 | March 25, 2020 3:49 AM |
Incidentally, if we are successful in reducing the dead and handicapped to “thousands”, instead of “millions”, it will be due to the efforts to shut things down. Please don’t ever say “see, it wasn’t so bad”, when that, if it happens that way, will be the result of the efforts of people to react to the virus.

In a few weeks we’ll have situations like this:
- You become severely symptomatic.
- You need to be admitted to a hospital, and if you receive the proper care, you’ll have a good chance of surviving.
- Except now the IC-units are stretched to full capacity and there’s no other option but to remain quarantined in your house.
- You will either survive, but suffer immensely, or die and several days will pass until your body is collected.
- Your body will be disposed of with little to no ceremony.
I just don’t get the people who equate this to a normal flu. Do they think healthcare professionals are just pretending they’re busy?
by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 25, 2020 4:27 AM |
The economy is life. It's the engine to our existence. Let's hope it can be jump started quickly. But the longer it is down the less likely it will reboot easily. And the loss of life due to that will dwarf this virus tremendously. Obviously we can't be in lockdown for 18 months until there is a vaccine. It's fair to question how long. Life is a cost benefit ratio analysis. You wouldn't get on a plane if you knew death rate was 75%. So, eventually we have to decide when to reopen society without destroying 98% to save 2%. OP maybe didn't express it with all the nuances but we always need a push-pull as local citizens. Right now there is relative calm but we can't wait for looting and riots to right the ship. We have a narrow window and it's way less than 90 days. Give it a solid three weeks and then base human nature will kick in. God, or whoever/whatever gives you comfort, bless.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | March 25, 2020 4:30 AM |
OP, do you not understand that people who are asymptomatic can and do infect others? And that they have no way of knowing that they are doing so? R55 And his pre-existing medical conditions were???
by Anonymous | reply 56 | March 25, 2020 5:18 AM |
R53, flu season usually starts around October and goes until around March, maybe later. So if a lot of people get the flu over a six month period and of that number, .01% die, that’s manageable because they’re not all in the hospital on the same day. Also, using ventilators for the flu is pretty unusual. Maybe oxygen if it turns into pneumonia. Which is rare.
With Coronavirus, 20% are pretty seriously ill. I think there’s some confusion because for most of us, being hospitalized doesn’t automatically mean you have to be on life support. What they’re calling “mild” isn’t actually mild, it means you’re not at death’s door in the hospital. That’s not the definition of a “mild” flu at all.
Also, they’re finding some recovered patients have damaged lungs and lose about 20-30% lung capacity. That may end up being permanent, which means thousands of people could be significantly impaired for the rest of their lives. Those could be young people too. Also not like the flu. Most flu victims fully recover with very little medical care. Complications are really rare. At the most, if you end up with bronchitis or pneumonia, you take antibiotics and you’re ok.
This is people collapsing. In some cases their hearts stop. In a lot of other cases, their lungs are so full of fluid they drown and nothing can save them.

[quote]hiv - and so what? Just found out 25 minutes ago. Gutted.
Because 99% of those whose death is attributed to Wuflu have pre-existing conditions. Relatively health people don't die from Wuflu, just as they don't die from any other flu.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | March 25, 2020 5:31 AM |
R58, I’m sorry for your loss.
A lot of people have pre-existing conditions. That doesn’t mean their family and friends don’t love them and value them. Someone can have an illness that is easily managed with medication, and it’s not obvious to the onlooker. But it’s a pre-existing condition. Even young people.
If you think about it, 150 years ago a lot of the easily managed illnesses of today were a death sentence. Parents would have big families and were lucky to keep a few kids through adulthood. Antibiotics and other meds changed that.
The earth’s population would be a lot smaller if we didn’t have insulin, high blood pressure meds, HIV drugs and a few others. Practically everyone over 50 takes some sort of maintenance drugs. If an illness came along that picked them all off, life expectancy is going to be cut drastically.

First off, [R55] I'm very sorry you lost your friend. That shits. Hang in there!
Now -Let's talk about "pre-existing conditions" -WTF?? What does it matter? We're talking about people's lives! Whether or not someone has an underlying medical problem is no way to value their life, or their right to care. People living with HIV, diabetes, RA, Lupus, cancer, or other conditions are still contributing to society. They still have families and friends. They pay taxes. Why are so many here so quick to write them off like so much cannon fodder? Broadway composer Jerry Herman lived with HIV for decades and continued to give us great music. Mary Tyler Moore lived her entire life with diabetes. I could go on and on. The point is that people's lives matter! It is disgusting that some would dismiss thousands -potentially millions -of deaths as no big deal.

So much schadenfreude on the corona threads.
It's coming from a dozen retired shut ins who are taking a real delight in the rest of the world being locked down like them. Anyone ecstatically screaming 'MILLIONS WILL DIE' falls into this category.

FF the OP (formerly known as Collinboy) because he’s a trolling asshole with a new email address who still doesn’t know his IP address is available to everyone who cares to look (Easily ID’d if anyone wishes to do so) and responds exactly as he has before in countless previous posts when he’s backed into a corner.
It doesn’t matter who he’s pretending to be because he’s easily recognized by the language, logic - or rather, lack of it - and his inconsistencies. Here, in one post, he says he has a business with lots of staff. Then in the next he works alone. He works alone all right: jerking off as he writes. You don’t have to watch.
He’s a very basic shithead who’s beating his minuscule penis while thinking he’s owning all you sob sisters when you waste your time to write and try to reason with his argumentative online persona. Trolls like OP pollute DL. You contribute to his toxicity by responding.
Do what you can so easily do - a simple FF - to reduce the pollution levels here.

While I do think we need to take every precaution, I only know one person directly who has been sick and tested. He’s awaiting his result. I’ve heard of a few with a degree of separation.

I can't WW r55. Sorry r55.

You could very well have it and have mild symptoms or even have had it and are now immune.
If you look at NYC's numbers and do the math, this must've entered NYC around the last two weeks of January, so it's been around for about two months now
by Anonymous | reply 90 | March 25, 2020 11:46 AM |
Surviving Wuflu only makes you immune to the current virus. The nanosecond it mutates, you again become susceptible.
by Anonymous | reply 91 | March 25, 2020 11:49 AM |
NY has 26,348 cases as of right now and the number probably increased as I’m typing this message.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | March 25, 2020 12:18 PM |
If I had the power I'd make sure only people like the OP get sick. I'm tired of this selfish shit.
Even for those more worried about the economy, believing sacrifice is necessary, congrats you're a fucking moron. Why? The economy won't improve doing it your way either.
The economy is screwed no matter what, so let it go and start worrying about people's lives. If you don't think the loss of life, a dragged out illness for years (due to the virus going unchecked), the hospital bills bankrupting millions, (making healthcare costs skyrocketed more), and other consequences won't ruin the economy just as much, if not more, you're a moron.
Would you rather see it controlled in a month, or suffer ongoing consequences for years because of your ignorance?

South Dakota: 30 infected, 0 deaths, 29 recovered
North Dakota: 36 infected, 0 deaths, 36 recovered

R85 "Plus people had to pay to see a doctor and in many cases couldn't afford it..."
How has that changed in America?
by Anonymous | reply 98 | March 25, 2020 4:31 PM |
r91 is lacking basic knowledge about immunity. Yes, viruses mutate. But when they mutate, the vast majority of the viruses (their basic shape, their protein sequences) remain the same. That's why the flu shots give you partial immunity, even when new flu varieties show up after the shots are formulated (or mutations of old flu varieties). The immune system recognizes aspects of the new virus as being similar to antibodies it has produced because of what was in the flu shot and those antibodies will mount a defense against the new varieties, even if only partially successful. If coronovirus turns out to be a constantly mutating thing, then, like the flu, labs will be organized to reformulate vaccines every year.
by Anonymous | reply 99 | March 25, 2020 5:03 PM |
There have apparently been some cases of re-infection or at least testing positive after recovering that flies in the face of what we believe is true about immunity after illness.
At this point, the doctors are operating under the assumption, faulty or otherwise, that the new positive tests performed upon followup with recovered patients is a fault in the testing either at the time they were discharged or during the followup.
Or so we all hope.

Well, Macau hardly has any cases at all, so therefore, the thousands sick in NY are “logic, proportion, and perspective”.
R42, please hurry up and die, you’re just disgusting.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | March 26, 2020 4:54 AM |
Macau is where GOOP got it! That's where it started!
by Anonymous | reply 102 | March 26, 2020 5:45 AM |
THe whole worlds stat thing is bullshit. The truth is we don't know how bad it is because some countries...like the United States and Russia are fudging their numbers, not testing, not telling the truth, etc. So we have no true count. And other countries aren't reaching people, or getting enough people tested...like Macau. I have a feeling the most accurate count is the death count. Because we really have no idea how many people are getting it or have already had it. The United States has, in the past always tried to take a leadership role and work with countries to deal with this, but we have screwed this up so badly it is now being called the world failure in the history of our country. All because we have an unstable imbecile trying to run our government and the people he has around him are the absolute dregs.
by Anonymous | reply 103 | March 26, 2020 12:40 PM |
The only count that matters is the death count. I am tired of hearing how many people have it, we are all infected as far as I'm concerned.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | March 26, 2020 12:44 PM |
R104, even people who survive may end up with permanent damage like lung scarring.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | March 26, 2020 12:50 PM |
r105 so?
by Anonymous | reply 106 | March 26, 2020 12:55 PM |
R106, my mother has scarring on her lungs from respiratory problems. Do you have any idea what hell it brings over the rest of your life? You'll want to die.

[quote]Well, Macau hardly has any cases at all, so therefore, the thousands sick in NY are “logic, proportion, and perspective”.
Hysteria and ignorance produce their own peculiar form of stupid and irrational. See R101 for details.
by Anonymous | reply 108 | March 26, 2020 1:02 PM |
So then you agree, the only count that matters is the death count? r107. I don't understand what lung damage has to do with it? Are we now counting not only those that die but wish they were dead?
by Anonymous | reply 109 | March 26, 2020 1:07 PM |
Imagine if COVID-19 would limit itself to killing off all the evil people in the world.

R110 95% of DL would be gone *poof*.
by Anonymous | reply 111 | March 26, 2020 1:13 PM |
DL would probably be a lot duller as a result, R111
by Anonymous | reply 112 | March 26, 2020 1:15 PM |
R109, what exactly do people like you want to happen? Do you just want everyone to go out and act like this isn't that serious because YOU feel it isn't? You want to pretend every hospital is lying in that they're currently overwhelmed? WTF is the point with people like you, especially those of you sitting at home and not working at hospitals. Why are you not seeing medical professionals agree with you?
We're doing this right now specifically to prevent something far worse. That's how it works.
by Anonymous | reply 113 | March 26, 2020 1:16 PM |
r113 You need to calm down, I clearly never said any of those things. Caring more about the death count than how many people are infected does not equal being nonchalant about corona. It means I care about who actually dies, that's all it means.

by Anonymous | reply 115 | March 27, 2020 3:11 AM |
You know, I might have a more cavalier attitude about this fucking virus if the Imbecile inthe White House had not behaved like the monster he is. We do not have enough supplies or equipment to keep our hospitals and our healthcare workers germ free. Basic supplies. They're running out of them.
s for equipment, none of us knows how the virus acts. Apparently healthy people in their 30s-40s are dying. Some people have hardly any symptoms, and others get a much stronger dose. We really don't know how we will react to the virus.
So we might need to go to the hospital because we can't breathe. Our lungs may get infected and there are not enough ventilators or other equipment to intubate us and help us through the rough part.
So yeah, if you get it, and you get really sick from it, going to a hospital may kill you. We have turned the clock back to the 1890s when people died because of infections they caught in a fucking hospital.

"More people die from the flu than from the coronavirus, so what's the big deal?" Consider this: per the CDC, during the 2018-2019 flu season, approximately 14% of the US population came down with the flu, with a fatality rate of .135% (that is a bit more than one tenth of one percent), for a total number of deaths of about 62,000. COVID-19 has a possible infection rate of 60%. With even a low fatality rate of 1%, that still puts possible deaths in the US from COVID-19 at 1,963,200. 62,000 vs 1,963,200. Do you now get why this is a big deal?

The comment above “McDonalds serves 2 billion hamburgers a year, but what happens when you drive up and order 500 million” is the best summary I’ve seen.
