Has Anyone Else Been Self Medicating (more than usual) Lately?
As a self employed freelancer, I've been living off of my savings for the past few weeks. Subsequently, I've found myself becoming increasingly anxious and a bit depressed. I only have about three months worth of living expenses saved up and I'm reading a lot of talk about business here in Canada being closed until ATLEAST May.
Spring and Summer are typically the most profitable times for me.
In an attempt to medicate, since there's really nothing I can do but sit home, I've been smoking weed or eating edibles daily. I usually wait until after 5 PM. However, this morninv I woke up particularly anxious, after suddenly realizing this pandemic might send me into financial ruin.
Am I the only loser here who is self medicating? Atleast I'm not using alcohol which is much more damaging.

If you're a freelancer, why not give fiverr.com or guru.com a try? I've hired folks off of there to help me with various stuff. Paid well for what little I needed, and one has led to a lasting relationship.
As for medicating, nope - nada. Yeah, it's worrisome out there, but since I'm in charge of our puppy, I can't partake right now.

I stocked up on edibles last week to the tune of 300 dollars. Enjoy the gift from nature OP. Work will be there once again in the future.

It's the opposite for me. I've smoked cannabis all day every day for many years, with an occasional rare exception.
Today is the third day in a row I haven't smoked at all. It occurred to me not smoking might be a good way to be prepared if I should acquire covid-19, but that's not it. Normally, I would think of that and then smoke anyway, but I just don't have the desire to smoke right now.
I feel wrung out and exhausted emotionally, and although my smoking box is right here next to me, I just don't want to do it.

My life is sooo much less stressful now working from home. My need to eat, drink and smoke disappeared. I’m so much happier. I need a work form home job.

You’re not a loser at all for self-medicating! Managing your anxiety is really important, and if some weed and edibles get the job done, then do what you have to do.

And one day you'll be dead. So why worry about it till it happens.

I'm drinking like Joan Crawford at the end of her life.
My liver might explode by the weekend.

I'm definitely inclined to do what you're doing, OP. The problem is edibles, even in tiny amounts, will make me hyper-focused on the frightening parts of the coronavirus situation. It's just not fun. I have enough alcohol to chase away my worries, but want to keep my immune system strong. I'm also the sole caretaker of my wonderful dog, and can't afford to be anything less than sharp while this plays out. Tempting, though.

I don't drink or use marijuana, but I've found myself ordering a lot of movies lately, mainly ones I've wanted to own but held off buying--I am still able to work somewhat and have enough income to stay afloat. Having Blu-rays show up at my house at least gives me something to do since I'm only leaving home a couple times a week. I've been watching a lot of movies lately to keep me distracted.

I used to have a couple of vodkas 3 or 4 nights a week. Once in a while I'd do an edible. Since this horror started I've completely stopped drinking and do a low dose edible every evening because they relax me. 5 years ago I'd have been a raging, drunken mess now like I was after the 2008 crash. This time, even though it's way more serious, I'm coping a lot better.

I’ve been self-medicating with food. It’s worse than it usually is.

I do edibles a bit, but I have to be careful, because the high depends on what mood I'm in and, if I'm feeling anxious, it magnifies it tenfold. I took one with my husband a few nights ago and had a panic attack. I hate that, because they usually make me really productive and get my creative juices flowing, but with the way the world is right now, I might need to hold off. At least I'll have them when the world finally comes to its senses again (and yes, I do believe it will.)

I got a bunch of low-dose edibles some months ago because someone at the dispensary said it was real hit-or-miss w. getting some I'd come to like. There is a temptation to have one every day while I work from home, but I'm determined to avoid building up a serious tolerance, need more and more, so -- so far -- I am able to stay with one or two per week to quiet my chattery mind. W. recent traveling and good duty-free stops, plenty of Japanese whiskey around, too, but I'm just having a little sip or two 3-4 nights a week.
Finances are... decent... for now and I am employed, but I have the occasional moment of worrying about those things, thoughts of getting rambunctious w. the treats if things start to go down the toilet -- on personal or societal levels.

I don't understand why people take entire edibles. Take a quarter or half to even you out. A whole edible gets me too high.
But my drinking - at least a bottle to 1 1/2 bottles of wine each night.

I'm not sure what you mean by "edibles," r23. Are you talking about old fashioned pot brownies?
In my state, where cannabis is legal, it's true that edibles can be legally sold as brownies, but most people find them hard for managing doses for managing stress. Edibles more usually take the form of gumdrops, caramels and chocolates, and are made so that one dose equals one gumdrop or caramel or chocolate square. And you can take a 2:1 dose so you don't get high--just very relaxed.

Yes I've been taking buprenorphine in tiny bits .. it gives me a glowing sense of well being. Trying to be careful because it is physically addicting. Also been eating gabapentin. I do not drink nor do I smoke pot, pot makes me paranoid and alcohol makes me gag. I wish they appealed to me the way they do for most people... so I'll settle for pills. Occasionally. Being stuck in the house could be a problem though.

I haven't smoked in ages but would love to get high and chill out during this self isolation thing. I just wish I had researched and planned ahead before I got out of NYC. No clue as where to get it delivered in any form and I imagine its even harder in places where it's readily available these days. Oh well, guess I'll just have to be a saucy booze hound!

Jesus Christ, how sober do you have to be to take care of a dog? Just don't step on it as you stumble to the kitchen for a refill.
