Let’s discuss Claire Danes
Acting: Very gifted child/teen actress and an above average/good adult actress. Her facial distortions can be unpleasant at times. Angela Chase is decidedly more charming than Angela Mathison but that’s due more to the nature of the characters than the performance.
Looks: As a teen, she was not quite plain but certainly not a Hollywood beauty. A cute girl that one might see in any mall or school. She quickly aged into a woman that is decidedly plain with a heavily lined face for someone only 40.
Career: She’s had a great career as a television actress but aside of a few 2-3 big breaks, never had the makings of a film star.
Why did she never make it on the big screen? Would her career be more successful if she was prettier? If My So Called Life was not cancelled would she have grown into becoming one of the most iconic actresses of the 90s which would have aided her later career prospects?

She was great in Brokedown Palace. Oscar worthy. But I never followed her career after that.

She's ugly as hell. But straight white men jerk off to her for reasons I will never understand.

r3 From my completely objective and distant point of view, she’s truly not ugly. I place her in the Cate Blanchett/Kate Winslet category. She was a cute teen/early 20s actress when her career should have blown up instead of faltering.
She also a strong enough actress for her looks to not matter.

We just did a Claire Danes thread. Bottom line is that everybody hates her.

Good actress who found her highest calling on TV. Nothing wrong with that. Not known as a great beauty but pretty enough to have attracted a number of handsome men in her time, including her husband Hugh Dancy and Billy Crudup. Are you by any chance that aging ham, Mary Louis Parker, OP?

R7 Can you explain why everyone hates her? She just seems normal enough. Did she say or do something awful. Like I said in R1, I've only seen her in one thing - nothing before or after - and was impressed. So what did she do that enflames some of these DLers?

She has a distractingly enormous head

R10 That's why she's so disliked? Because she has a 'distractingly enormous head'?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 24, 2020 1:37 PM

She’s unpleasant to look at. That’s not a good thing for a movie actor.

I think she was gorgeous as a young girl, not just cute. But yes, sadly she has become quite harsh-looking. I noticed that she looked better during her pregnancies - the extra weight softened her face.

She's pretty insufferable in interviews. Takes herself way too seriously.

She's a good actress, but her voice is grating, especially in intense emotional scenes.

She's an extraordinary actress. She was nothing short of spectacular in the TV movie about Temple Grandin, the famous autistic woman who developed modern humaine livestock treatment

She's brilliant in Homeland.

Well R11, perhaps the strain of supporting her enormous head has caused her to become a humorless, self-important bitch?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 24, 2020 2:16 PM
|
Humorless, self entitled, takes herself way too seriously, thinks she’s smarter than she actually is, decent actress, wants to be star but won’t admit it and pretends it’s not important.
Hate her.

She and Leonardo hated each other in Romeo and Juliet. Then she was on her way in movies after finish college at the Ivy League and when in Stage Beauty fell for Billy Crudup, who was engaged to MLP who was having his baby. Then she just moved on after his life was wrecked. (Yeah he was responsible too) But it was like just another guy you date in your 20s.
She is a homewrecker and to this day did not feel bad about it. When asked she would say her younger self was just head over heals in love and just didn't understand the consequences.

She is hammy in Homeland. How she ever survived Anne Hathaway's SNL send-up I'll never know.

I've never found her plain--certainly not as plain as fellow former child star Kiki Dunst, for example.
In OP's photo, she's quite pretty.

I love Anne Hathaway's impersonations. She is so talented, but she's so deeply annoying as a human being.
I LOVE Bill Hader's Mandy Patinkin impersonation too. No one was ever less charismatic than Patinkin in Homeland.

I never understood why people cared how nice celebrity actors are. They aren't going to be your friends. They will just entertain you in one or two hours blocks of time.

Maybe so R32, but we think Billy's a douche too. He peaked in Almost Famous.

Dunst is a zillion times more talented than Danes.

I'd say they are about even talent-wise. They both at least grew up to shed their child actor tricks (something other child stars who grew up to be great beauties, like Winona Ryder and Natalie Wood, never did).

I saw her in Shopgirl with Steve Martin. Very good film and she is luminous in it. Incredibly touching and vulnerable. Steve Martin plays a monster sugar daddy.

R28: That is AnnE's finest performance; brilliant sketch, even Keenan was tolerable. Now I have to go take a look at Damien Lewis's mouth!
Thanks for sharing, we needed the laugh today.

I thought she was very fetching in The Family Stone. Good actress. Got some bad press because of the Crudup thing. Sure can draw some fine men. I kind of loved her for hating Leo.

She was cute in The Family Stone. It didn't hurt that she played the sister of the very uptight and shrewish SJP though. Agree about the Leo thing too.

When thinking about Miss Claire Danes I am reminded of dialogue from the film "Sixteen Candles."
She's not ugly. There's nothin' there, man. It's not ugly. It's just... void.

She has very short legs and a long torso...kind of a weird shape for a star.
Mandy Patinkin has no neck.
That's all I got

because Danes and Hathaway are contemporaries and both "serious actresses", I'm surprised Hathaway agreed to do this without there being bad blood between her and Danes, maybe there was a phone call made before she agreed

Claire is a reasonably good actress -and I agree with the poster who said she’s in the sort of Cate Blanchett sort of looking group (not bad at all!). Loved Claire in Little Women and Temple Grandin. She also had smaller roles in movies where she sort of disappeared because of the actors around her (like The Hours, small role overshadowed by Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, and Julianne Moore). Not sure why she didn’t end up in Kate Winslet/Cate Blanchett or Keira Knightly-type roles. She’d have to work on subtlety though; her face and voice are very expressive. I’d love to see her in a period piece.

R49 idk I consider Cate Blanchett extremely striking with beautiful coloring and bone structure (plus an elegant and original sense of style).
R42 I don’t think she looks like Goop but they’re sound-a-likes for sure. It’s a voice that’s kind of deep but also nasal at the same time.
