My friend is STILL offering "services"
I have a friend in the sex industry who is still advertising and taking appointments, despite our city stopping all "non-essential" businesses from operating.
I doubt I'll get a massage or my hair done in months. Yet my friend thinks he has a right to continue offering his sexual services, since he is self employed and apparently doesn't want to use all his savings up.
How is this allowed? I'm debating telling him to grow up but don't want to overreact and lose another friendship.

It isn’t “allowed.” His business is illegal to begin with.

Prostitution is legal throughout Canada?

Exactly why do you need to be friends with this person when he's a total idiot? He's your last friend? Then avoid him physically at all costs or keep a social distance of 20 feet.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | March 23, 2020 7:41 PM

I suppose he could argue his services are essential.

R4 It's illegal to buy sexual services in Canada but not to sell services. So a John can be charged for it but an escort can't be.

You might want to gently suggest that it's really, really not a good idea to be doing in person sex work at this time and that he might want to seriously consider switching to doing a webcam or something. Ultimately it's his choice but I don't think it would be out of line to not want a friend to die or become a vector of fatal disease, and to tell him so.

R8 with a measured reaction and reasonable advice. Your friend might not fully comprehend the risks. Plus it's understandable to want to keep an income and many are in the same situation (in other industries too). Ultimately those who do not have financial stability are stuck between a rock and a hard place without federal economic support to weather the isolation period.
For you personally, definitely keep socially distanced from your friend because he is much more likely than others to be a carrier.

by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 23, 2020 8:35 PM

His clients who are "all adults" could infect others. The pandemic so far indicates that every person who is infected infects two other people.
Which wouldn't be very adult of them.

It's also not ethical. I know we're talking about a sex worker, but showing a basic interest in other people by not spreading the virus would be nice.

Why the shock and outrage? The guy sells sex for a living. This isn’t the kind of career choice made my normal people? If he can deaden himself to sell his body a lack of empathy or concern shouldn’t cause your jaw to drop.

It's not that big of a deal. There are PLENTY of people not abiding by the requirements of social distancing. Plenty of dudes are still hooking up. Not all, but some. Anyone who sleeps with him knows what they are doing. It's not all that different than someone being slutty or spending the week hooking up with a few fuck buddies.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | March 24, 2020 6:55 AM
|
But it IS different. Passing this virus around either to his clients or to other people he encounters on his way to/from his clients will not help the situation. This isn't a cold or a minor STD. It's a serious virus for which there is no treatment and for many people it's fatal.

For countries that regulate sex work rather than criminalizing and stigmatizing it, I'm sure this is a problem much easier to solve.

Don't know how many escorts are making indoor calls at least in Manhattan as many buildings are discouraging non-residents and non-essential persons from entering. Things like deliveries must be met downstairs at lobby/vestibule and or residents being asked to curtail entertaining/social visits.
Some random guy showing up late or overnight saying he is a "masseur" or whatever is likely to raise flags.

In the case of Coranavirus, its not a sexually-transmitted disease - so his risk factor is the same as anyone in any other form of service, even food distribution. He's not putting a group of people as risk by hosting an orgy in a supermarket. If both his client and he know what's at stake and aren't putting anyone else at risk, I say it's up to each of them. The client could just as easily hook up with someone on Grindr - (where plenty of profiles are still up and running).
I see no issue with it.

You are seriously deluded if you think every self employed person in NYC or elsewhere is shutting themselves up and their business down during this crisis.
Those who have retail store fronts are fucked; but many dog walkers, cleaners, and a whole host of others are going about their work (if they can book any of it) best they can . People who don't work for someone else aren't covered by extended or any unemployment bennies, and unless have a huge emergency stash have bills that want paying.
First of April is next week and plenty of people barely made March's rent (if they did at all), and are staring down a gun barrel. No, they cannot be evicted (at least in New York anyway) for several months; but you try coming up with four or more thousand dollars at once.
Yes, it may seem heartless, stupid or whatever but people are doing what they have to do; especially since it is very unwise to rely upon any sort of local or government help as a certainty.

As stated previously know of several barbers and hairdressers whose shops have been ordered close that have gone mobile. They just don't have a choice, none are wealthy enough to sit home and rid this thing out for one or more weeks with no income.
Remember at least in NYC for many people early through late spring is the last period they really can earn good money. Soon as school lets out/Memorial Day weekend and summer season begins people start clearing out. People rely on making bank now to carry themselves over slow summer period when business could be down.

From the San Jose Mercury News
"The San Mateo County health officer lambasted those flouting shelter-in-place rules Monday, writing in an unrestrained letter that residents “spit in our face” by leaving home unnecessarily.
At times bordering on the Shakespearean, Dr. Scott Morrow gave a dire warning on the county’s health website Monday: By leaving home, you will increase the Bay Area’s COVID-19 fatalities.
“If you decide you want to do your own thing and follow your own rules, you disrespect us all. You spit in our face, and you will contribute to the death toll that will follow,” Morrow wrote. “For those of you who say: ‘nobody tells me what to do,’ now is a time to make an exception. You can go back to being ornery in the future.”

Going around city past few days it really does seem as if many of those remaining in Manhattan are treating this whole thing as some sort of extended holiday.
Last night was rather nice and people were out and about, including one couple saw strolling down First avenue pushing a baby carriage as if they didn't have a care in world.

R45 - That doesn't sound right. NYC doesn't empty in the summer - particularly with all the tourists. There aren't THAT many people who go to their second homes for the entire summer.
Now, tourist numbers will definitely be down - as they will be everywhere. But I've never heard that things drop that much in the service sector during the summer - it usually increases.

You've obviously not been to UES, much of UWS, and many parts of Manhattan at least during summer months.
Much of Manhattan empties out of wives and children who are off in the country or camp (the latter), at least for June then July. The husbands are in town during week and go out to country on weekends. But August everyone is gone except those who either don't have PTO or whatever.
My point is that large volume of prostitution clients are normally local men; and while tourists can (and do ) make up a good part of business it isn't same as regular steady clients.
Paris, and many European capital cities are same along with a good number of American urban areas; the wealthy and anyone else who can decamp for country or otherwise take vacations during summer, especially August. Well at least first half of that month anyway; by middle or late August people return to prepare for moving in day (college), or because private schools will soon open.

From what have heard that is pretty much how some hustlers and trans operate already. *LOL*
You'd think for shelling out $$$/per hour you'd get some sort of intimacy, but unless hustler or trans in into you that often just doesn't happen. There are (or were) plenty of review sites that confirmed this happening. It gave "clients" a way to vent and get some of their own back at least.
